5-0 out of 5 stars Granting the reader a complete understanding of psychological discoveries and breakthroughs
Knowledgeably co-edited and authored by the professional team of Elspeth Cameron Ritchie (Psychiatry Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General), Patricia J. Watson (National Center For Posttraumatic Stress Disorder) and Matthew J. Friedman (Executive Director of the National Center for PTSD) Interventions Following Mass Violence And Disasters is a work of seminal, in-depth scholarship focused upon understanding and studying mental health oriented responses following large-scale traumatic events. Granting the reader a complete understanding of psychological discoveries and breakthroughs in the study of aiding those affective by extensive and damaging traumatic experiences, Interventions Following Mass Violence And Disasters informs the reader of every necessity to competently help a patient recover their emotional stability and well-being. An important and core addition to professional and academic library reference collections on Psychology and Psychiatry, Interventions Following Mass Violence And Disasters is very strongly recommended as an excellent reference for all practicing psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrist, counselors, nurses, "first responders" and trauma victims.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening
Hurricane Katrina was a national disaster that was played out on an international stage. In this age of instant and graphic communication where there is an increasingly thin line between news and entertainment, the whole world watched while the hurricane bore down on New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. The world watched with sick fascination as pictures of death and devastation flashed across their television screens. Untold millions watched as the New Orleans levies let go, inundating the city with water. And the world saw the response which was both impressive in its speed and frustrating in its disorganization. In The Politics of Disaster, Marvin Olasky, professor of journalism at the University of Texas and editor-in-chief of World magazine, takes a look back at this disaster and looks forward to the inevitable "Katrinas" of the future. "This book examines incidents, some partially preventable, that have a major negative impact on the ability of an entire community to live peaceably."
5-0 out of 5 stars Destroys the Myths and Offers Strategies for the Future
Marvin Olasky's new book on Katrina stands out among the rest because it is the first to look closely at "what worked" as well as what failed in the days following the storm. It is the first to identify the important role that faith-based efforts played in the recovery, and most importantly, it is the only book to offer real strategies for the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reality check for the Great Outdoors
This book is a fine overview of the history of search and rescue in the parks from one of the professionals in the field. In addition to lots of historical information, it provides plenty of food for thought for anybody planning an outdoor trip. There are lots of lessons to be learned from the mistakes of others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Left me wanting to know more
If you are interested in the subject matter, it would be hard not to enjoy this book. I was amazed at the number of bodies that had to be left in the parks because they couldn't be retreived for one reason or another. I was also surprised to learn how many planes had crashed onto the lands or into the mountains of national parks. There are also the things you would expect, such as falls from mountain climbing and people who get lost while hiking. It was sad to read about the rangers who risked their lives and became heroes to save others, only to read about some of them succumbing to the dangers of the park themselves later on in the book. Many of the stories made me wish there was additional information, because I wanted to know more about what happened to these people. Overall a very engrossing book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling Gathering of Varied Narratives
As the NPS's Chief National Emergency Services Coordinator the author spent many years in the search and rescue business. In the course of his career he had access to the original records and was able to select most dramatic and cautionary stories. Each covers at most a few pages but the reader will want to keep reading. Very hard to put down and a substantial amount of research and good writing. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written story of an almost forgotten tragedy
This is a very well written story about the tragedy of the 1938 hurricane that, without warnning, hit Long Island and the coast of New England. This hurricane changed the look of shore lines, islands and lives. It wiped out entire families, left a school bus driver forever haunted by the loss of all the children in his care, and yet miraculously spared others while destroying everything around them. This is a good book that tells a story of struggle, courage, loss, and survival.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read despite some flaws
R.A. Scotti presents a riveting account of the 1938 hurricane that slammed into Long Island and then wreaked havoc in New England. The strength of this book lies with the personal accounts of the survivors, including the rich and famous such as Katherine Hepburn, as well as everyday people such as frightened children at a party fleeing to an attic to escape the rising waters, passengers on a train crowded into forward cabins as waves eroded the rail bed, and numerous coastal residents caught unaware by the storm.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it for a weather nerd, ended up reading it myself!
I bought this book for my husband, the Weather Channel junkie. (If you know anyone who watches Storm Stories, this is the *perfect* gift for them.) But when I glanced inside, I was immediately drawn into the sheer human drama of this awful storm. The prose is elegant and not too ornate; sometimes a more spare approach is just what's needed. The story is shocking and amazing all by itself, without elaboration. Hubby got the book eventually, but not until I finished it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An honest and inspiring memoir.
I just finished reading this truly inspiring and amazing story. She survived the tsunami that hit Thailand on December 26, 2004 by clinging to a palm tree for 8 hours all the while her pelvis had been crushed in several places. However, her boyfriend Simon, the love of her life, did not survive.
4-0 out of 5 stars More Than A Model
This is not my normal tome.I do not tend to read bios of superstar models, but Petra caught my attention during several interviews on televsion.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL*I'd give it 10 stars if I could
This book called my attention since I saw it, maybe because of the tittle or the cover, then I read an article about it and decided I had to read it. If you have read some of my reviews, you would assume that I really like memoirs. This memoir is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars People who listen.
There are still people in this world who listen: anthropologists. After reading less than humble authors who are certain they have most if not all the answers, I found this volume to be a delight. The fifteen articles in this book, each concerning individuals and groups in a particular cultural/historical setting, address the phenomenon of "social suffering".While the dominant American cultural construct holds that virtually every experience is individual, these authors establish that life is, after all, social and individual, and much suffering (another unpopular topic) is created, experienced and coped with socially. The first chapter, by Arthur Kleinman and Joan Kleinman, is alone worth the price of the book. After discussing how we Americans present to ourselves and react to news of dire suffering, usually discretly presented without context and with no way to respond, the authors write, "The American cultural rhetoric ... is changing from the language of caring to the language of efficiency and cost ...."Other essays address Mao's China, modern India, Nazi medicine, terror in Sri Lanka and torture.Paul Farmer's essay regarding the lives of two of Haiti's destitute is particularly unnerving. Some of the essays require close reading, but they are well worth the effort. This is a book that will leave you with a broader and deeper perspective. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "The Climb" vs "Into Thin Air"
Following Jon Krakauer's gripping first-hand account in "Into Thin Air", and his pointed accusatory remarks surrouding Anatoli Boukreev's role in the rescue event, I had to read Anatoli's "The Climb" back to back in a bid to suss out what actually happened in the 1996 Mt. Everest tragedy.
4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all Everest fans

5-0 out of 5 stars The Climb
I like this book alot. I bought it to compare the different accounts of the players involved in the 1996 tragedy on Mt. Everest. I read everywhere that Jon Krakauer's account was the "definitive" one but was curious to see how others who he had mentioned in his version and in the case of Anatoli Boukreev, even vilified, saw the event and their roles in it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice to have, but save your money.
One of the first architectural books I bought, because it was different.I didn't know who he was at first or if he was an architect.I thought comic would be a great branch into architecture. This books show many of this theoretical project that is base of a post-apocalypse society. This book displays his great hand work skills. He used mediums of color-pencil, ink sketches and some very powerful chip-board models.85% of the book is artworks. There are some texts on this philosophy for his reasoning if you would believe it or not.I went to his lecture at SciArt and his new stuff is just as similar in style to his older works in his book.I no longer regard Wood as much of an architect or nor a artist. This book was good in time of my interest in the subject, but now it has no resourceful information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not his best, but still good
Lebbeus Woods is perhaps unequalled, and definitely the most imitated renderer in the architectural world. With that said, this book is just a shadow of his masterpiece, "Anarchitecture: Architecture as a Political Act"1-0 out of 5 stars woods bites

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Candidate for Course Syllabi
The only think I would add to what has been said already is that this book should be strongly considered for courses that emphasize the interaction between medicine and public health.Unlike other books written about the urban condition, this book focuses on a single public health problem and presents it from both scientific and sociodemographic perspectives.Medical and public health students alike stand much to gain by reading this book.
