5-0 out of 5 stars Great Handbook on Poise: "a lost art"
Though not necessarily the author's intent, I deeply appreciated this writer's insights regarding communication skills (both verbal & nonverbal), self-presentation, discernment, and crises managment.
5-0 out of 5 stars Author took no payment for the book
In response to doubletrouble... I read in a newspaper article that the author is giving 100% of the proceeds of this book to a children's charity. So, anyhow, I felt the book very interesting and a great testimony about airplane crashes and crisis workers! Everyone involved in the Sept 11th activation should read it. It was very moving.

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting little book
There are quite a few stories, books, etc. about this event, but this book is different in a way, with newspaper accounts, and direct information from the survivors and their kin themselves. It's an easy read and one most weather buffs will enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most intense storm on Earth
Tornadoes are the most powerful storms on Earth. They may not be the biggest in size, but the destruction they can cause is insurmountable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and highly informative
At around 1:00 p.m., March 18, 1925, a tornado touched down in Reynolds Country, Missouri. But, this was no ordinary tornado. This was an F5 multivortex tornado that proceeded east-northeast across 219 miles, 13 counties and three states (Missouri, Illinois and Indiana). By the time the tornado dissipated, it had destroyed a number of small towns, erased a number of farms, and killed some 689 people. This was one of the worst tornadoes in U.S. history, and this book tells its story.

3-0 out of 5 stars A New Species of Trouble
In A New Species of Trouble, Kai Erikson presents several short stories about environmental and social concerns that have arisen from anthropocentric causes. For instance, The Haitians of Immokalee details the effects on immigrants and families of an incident in Immokalee, Florida in which three hundred and four people lost the majority of their savings at a local depository.Residents had trusted the depository to keep their funds safe, and were emotionally distraught after not being able to collect the funds that they had worked long and difficult hours to earn.Immigrants could not provide for themselves or their families, especially family members abroad that they had been sending money to.Sick loved ones at home could not get the financial help they needed to be treated, and children did not receive the necessary funding to attend school, which provided a viable means to advance in the world.Depression and lack of direction afflicting many of the victims, and many lost their sense of trust.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
If you spent any time reviewing CVRs, then there is nothing new in this book.Although there are several inaccuracies/mistakes, the worst part of the book is that it gives almost zero insight into what happened in each case.A short one page write-up at the end of each CVR would really help this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars PLAGIARISM
This collection of CVR transcripts from air crashes and near misses is a huge waste of money.MacPherson just reproduces excerpts from the transcripts that can be found on the internet at the NTSB website and many other sites. In their complete form and for free. His short paragraphs of explanations of the incidents involved add nothing to the book because it is obvious that the author knows nothing of aviation. If you are a true student of air crashes, look up the complete accident reports on the NTSB website or avsaf.org or a number of other sites. These are free and much more informative.Black Box is a cheap excuse for jounalism.I'd actually give it less than 1 star if I could.[...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling Reading
I suspect the reviewers who were looking for excruciating details are more of the anorak/spotter/enthusiast persuasion than certificated fliers. Personally I found many of the transcripts contained lessons that will certainly follow me into the cockpit. The CVR transcripts also show a level of professionalism and skill that I think the flying public is by and large oblivious of. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read It And Be Prepared!
For those unfamiliar with Dr Clayton's research, this book is a companion to his previous work, Life After Doomsday. Both volumes are essential reference for anyone seeking the myriad and potentially catastrophic scenarios, both manmade and natural, facing modern civilization. In Life After Terrorism, Clayton presents a realistic if frightening view of the global threat posed by a multitude of terrorist acts. His in-depth discussion of exposure to various biowarfare agents is especially chilling.Following the common-sense suggestions in this book can increase your chances of survival in the event of a terrorist attack.Read it and be prepared!

1-0 out of 5 stars Instilling Fear as Means of Control
It's another sick attempt to reap personal benefits by publishing a book, which contributes to the mad culture of fear, permeating American society of today. The author never mentions what are the chances, or what they've ever been, for an average American to die from an act of terror, in comparison to the chances of dying from other unnatural causes, such as domestic crime, automobile accidents, etc. Just today I've read that the authoritative JAMA claims about 250,000 Americans die every year as a result of medical malpractice. This means, about 600,000 died since 9-11-01, and how many books do we have on how to protect ourselves from bad doctors, poor hospital care, wrong medications, etc.?5-0 out of 5 stars This is a excellent "How To Survive" book
After terrorism came to America in 2001, there has been much talk about future attacks. What kind of person or group would do such a thing? What is a likely target? What form will it take? How can I protect myself? This book, written by a county assistant Emergency Services Director (the person who is supposed to know about such things) attempts to answer some of those questions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Historical Fiction
This book is well-written and well-researched, and a cut above normal historical fiction.I'm proud to add it to my collection of SF '06.There's also a great documentary here on amazon called "Disaster by the Bay" that is the best of the best in non-fiction documentaries on the great quake and fire of '06.I'd highly recommend this book and that DVD for your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars On the One Hundredth Anniversary
Just yesterday San Francisco commemorated the 100th anniversary of the great 1906 earthquake and after all of these years controversy still swirls around the actions of the city's leaders before, during and after the quake. Because of the very nature and layout of San Francisco fire was the great natural villain of this story and therefore former firefighter Dennis Smith is uniquely qualified to tell this story. It is a story however that not only deals with a giant earthquake and the resulting fires, but also a story of corrupt politicians, greedy businessmen and overzealous and inept leadership on the part of the army.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don
Excellent book.I grew up in Daly City not too far from the San Andreas fault and know S.F. pretty well. I was a little kid when the 1957 quake hit the area and my grandparents were in the 1906 quake. I can picture it all very well from Dennis Smith's descriptions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping Story of Tragic Sea Disaster
As I suspect many people can, I recall learning of the downed Russian submarine, the Kursk, in August 2000, and following the efforts of the Russians to recover any survivors from the wreck, as well as the tragic discovery after a week that none of the crew remained alive. Ramsey Flynn's account of the disaster, coupled with an analysis of the responses to the disaster by both the Russian and American governments, makes for a gripping tale that at once informs and saddens the reader.
3-0 out of 5 stars A pedestrian, but readable, account of a momentous event.
Ramsey Flynn has performed a heroic task in researching the disaster that befell the Russian submarine Kursk. The Russians, clearly, are still not entirely forthcoming about all the events that led to the explosion of a torpedo inside the sub and the horrifying efforts of the Russian navy to first ignore the disaster, then its inadequate rescue efforts and the final attempts to blame the disaster on other nations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfying story of sad search for smashed submarine
In August 2000, a Russian sub goes mssing. The Russian authorities delay the news and, when they say anything at all, first want to blame an unspecified American sub for causing the demise of the Kursk. Cooler minds and a more open Russian press prevail, and the truth leaks out. A thorough, impressive work, "Cry" represents an excellent piece of investigative journalism, pushing aside the misguided "collision" theories and illustrating the demise of the Russian military.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving stories about real life heroes
This is an amazing collection of true stories of generations of Red Cross volunteers, which is both a compelling look at the lives of these brave and adventurous Americans as well as an intimate account of the events that have shaped our modern society, from wars and disasters to improvements in safety and community development.I read the book cover to cover on a long flight and was in tears more than once. The lives of the volunteers and the way in which Ms. Turk organizes and presents their Red Cross focus shows the real life generosity of spirit and humanism of the Red Cross, without sugar coating some of the controversy surrounding its bureaucracy.
