5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
A credible analysis of the fig-leaf for endless state inaction that these abused, heroic organizations have become. Credible because the author obviously reached his conclusions with great anguish at the fact. Credible because, Rieff is the same author who wrote the Nov NYT 2003 piece, "Blueprint for a Mess" excoriating the administration for its Iraq policy. This is not a Wilsonian / Wolfowitz interventionist itching to let the ship of state set sail, and because of that, his pained conclusions about the reasons for state inaction/ineffective action in the face of pressing needs to act are credible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Asks the right questions
The author does point out many of the problems with humanitarian non-governmental organizations. They do plenty of self-promotion.They make deals with a variety of thugs just to be permitted to operate in some regions. In other cases, they make deals with various nations, adopting their political causes.Worst of all, they can be misused by those with truly genocidal plans: they can be assigned to give food and lodging to intended victims, drawing them into camps. When armies show up to murder the victims, the humanitarians obviously get out of the way.But just what service does all this provide?
4-0 out of 5 stars An important book about an important problem
Pulling no punches, Rieff has written a damning insight into the current humanitarian care industry (and it has become an industry) has lost its way in the modern day. While showing great admiration for people who believe they are doing the right thing, Rieff exposes the problems with the current methods and thinking behind humanitarian intervention and aid, especially the loss of neutrality and the growth of advocacy for military intervention.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As Real As It Gets...
I found "Ready to Serve, Ready to Save!" to be an invaluable book.Although I have experience in obedience work, I have seriously been considering joining a search and rescue group in the near future.5-0 out of 5 stars Learn from the successes & failures of SAR dog handlers
One of the best ways to learn are from the true life-stories of other people.Ready to Serve - Ready to Save provides just that vehicle to SAR dog handlers and mission coordinators. It is not unusual to leave mission base after a particularly long and difficult search, mentally recounting all the shoulda, coulda, wouldas.I am grateful that Susan has invested the time and effort to help rescuers learn from the experiences of others who have been there.I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in the exhilerating life of search and rescue.

2-0 out of 5 stars Professional writer needed to search-and-rescue this book!
An unedited compilation of SAR operations written by participants, this book is just raw data and notterribly useful in the form it is presented. Without unbiased data it is not useful from a scientificviewpoint and in the current form it is not useful for even a light read. Too bad a professional writer was not assigned to do the editing by the publisher. And Ms. Neudeck-Dicken's contribution on the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing appears to just be there for splash, it does not tie into the rest of the compilations and appears to be in the format of an unaccepted paper... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars americans shot black hawk down
Grown-ups should know that journalists rarely get their stories right. This book, presented as a straightforward examination of the NGO's 'Aid-Game' and their complementary 'Aid-Circus', ends up being all the more poignant when it targets Western misconceptions and the Neo-colonialism that has installed itself in the Western media and elites under the catchphrase 'Humanitarian Intervention'. You don't have to believe me - just readthis fantastic book, written by a former member of the NGO's international, and find out how and why famines really start and really end, as opposed as what you hear on newspapers and TV. If you wanna know why Black Hawk went down, this is the book to start. If you remember those Ethiopian children you thought you saved by buying tickets for charity concerts, maybe you wanna know the truth.

3-0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking,worthwhile read.
This is a managable text, even for the novice in African current afairs and is written by the co-director of the Africa Rights group, based in London. De Waal contends that the causes of famine are invariably political and avoidable. He is critical of the activities to date of many aid agencies andobserves that they have in many cases paradoxically perpetuated the very crises they have been seeking to end. This work has raised many questions for me and is a starting point for further reading on the subject of how aid to developing countries can be best delivered. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Master Storytellers
I am not usually a nonfiction reader, but a friend strongly recommended I read this book. She was right--it really does read like a novel. The authors tell the stories of Camille survivors in such a compelling way that I found I couldn't put it down. They seamlessly weave in the science of hurricanes and the political and cultural environments of the time.I was hooked from the very first page and wasn't ready for it to end.Howard and Zebrowski are master storytellers.

5-0 out of 5 stars riveting read!
What a wonderful read Category 5 was. I am a voracious reader, but, unfortunately, a slow one (and people say God doesn't have a sense of humor), but I picked up a hardback copy of of Category 5 two days ago and finished it 5am this morning--I couldn't put it down. I love how the authors wove the stories of the people in with the unfolding science. In particular, I had a lump in my throat when I read how Luke Petrovich went to his grave still thinking he hadn't done enough. He seemed like a fine man, and a remarkable one, considering how he crawled out from under the mental and emotional and psychological clutches of the "Judge". I live right here in central Virginia (Greene County, just north of Charlottesville), and I have a friend in Nelson County, so I've been passing to and through that county for years, and I had always heard about the horrible events wrought when Camille came to visit that August night, but this narrative brought it alive and made it all real. Also, I have to admit, I never truly before understood what all the ire and lingering mistrust was about on the part of African Americans, but the discussions of the pervasive and unrelenting bigotry of the time and place opened my eyes--I'd be angry, too, to this day if I and people like me, simply because of the color of our skins, had endured THAT degree of hatred. More than once while I was reading, I had to put the book down and just breathe a long, "My God!" I wonnder if the authors have thought about selling the movie rights to Category 5.Many times while I was reading, I thought about what a great movie this book would make--heck, the part about the "Judge" alone would make for great viewing!--what a despicable, yet multifaceted and multilayered man! Look at what Petersen and company did with The Perfect Storm--a movie from Category 5 would be ten times better (if it copied the quality of the book, that is).I recommend this book highly for a thought-provoking, eye-opening, page-turning read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Howard and Zebrowskipay deserved homage to the mighty Camille

5-0 out of 5 stars A Touching Reminder Of A Day That United All Of America....
Where were YOU on the morning of September 11th, 2001? I was at work when Howard Stern reported that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers. Having been born and raised in The Bronx before moving to Rochester, N.Y., my workday immediately ended as I focused my full attention on Howard's show; He became my only link to the city I loved and would always call home. Later on came the TV reports and the images that will never leave my mind, but for those first few hours, I sat listening in shock as the man who makes me laugh every workday became my only connection to family, friends, and loved ones who were suddenly living in a war-zone. 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, dense and horrifying
Easily the best of the comics industry's myriad responses to the tragedy of September 11th, this book gets down into the nitty-gritty of human experiences and reactions to tragedy. No superheroes. No larger-than-life expostulation. Just real people - talented artists - telling amazing stories. Higlights include Gregory Benton's "Treasure," an untitled Hutch Owen story by Tom Hart that manages to toe the fine line between rage and sentiment and "Citadel Of The Night" by K. Thor Jensen and Chris Knowle. Honestly, though, the book is so full of great material that nobody should be without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every community library in the country should acquire a copy
After the September 11th terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and in the skies over Pennsylvania, some 50 graphic novelists and cartoonist ranging from such legendary names as Will Eisner and Harvey Pekar, to newer talents such as Frank Cho and James Kochalka, came together in a very special project as a way of expressing their grief, patriotism, and support of the American people in the face of naked, lethal, ideologically driven aggression. The result is 9-11: Emergency Relief, a powerful graphic novel. The proceeds will go to benefit the American Red Cross. Simply put, every school and every community library in the country should acquire a copy of 9-11: Emergency Relief for the edification of their students and their patrons. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Thirteen men from Engine 40, Ladder 35 firehouse initially responded to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001; only one survived. Located near Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the firehouse was known for its rich tradition and strong leadership. This gripping book details the actions of the 13 men on that horrific day and the heartbreaking aftermath--the search for the bodies, the efforts of their families to deal with overwhelming grief, and the guilt and conflicting emotions of the surviving members of the firehouse. The book is also about the men themselves and the tight bond and sense of duty and honor that held them together. David Halberstam does a masterful job of illustrating the inner workings of a firehouse, with its traditions, routines, and complex social structure that in many ways resembles a "vast extended second family--rich, warm, joyous, and supportive, but on occasion quite edgy as well, with all the inevitable tensions brought on by so many forceful men living so closely together over so long a period of time." He also explains why so many men choose this life despite the high risk, relatively low pay, and physical and emotional demands of the job.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Uncommon Courage of Ordinary People
The author notes that he has always admired acts of uncommon courage of ordinary people, an admiration which comes through in this 198 page accounting of a firehouse that is situated only 3 1/2 blocks from where the author has lived for 21 years, a firehouse that sent 13 brave unselfish men into the tragedy of the Twin Towers on Sept.11:12 of those men where killed.Halberstam is able to let the reader come to know the men as individuals, the hopes and dreams of ordinary people in an extraordinary occupation, how the monstrous loss affected their families and other fireman, the pain of having funeral services without bodies, of having fathers, husbands, sons suddenly gone forever. There is insight into the living dynamic of the firehouse, the family of fireman, the nature of a job that requires risking one's life to save the life and property of strangers. This book is about "discovering the nobility of ordinary people", and very much worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Firehouse
The book Firehouse is about a firehouse in New York during 9/11 and after. The book shows the effects 9/11 had on the U.S. and espesially on the fire fighters in New York. The book is written by David Halberstam.
5-0 out of 5 stars FIREHOUSE
The book Firehouse is non-fiction. The author of the book is David Halberstam. The book is centered around a firehouse in New York City in downtown Manhattan. It was an FDNY station, and it housed Engine 40, and Ladder 35. They were known as the cavemen.Firehouse focuses on the life at the firehouse atmosphere and of the guys and how they relate and act around each other and their families. It shows the chemistry between all the firemen. The book does get sad at times because it was written about the guys in the station and the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thenody for Bagpipes
Once again, stalwart Free Press comes through with another incredibly in-depth, in fact slightly overlong, inquiry into recent history. In fact, given the subtance of the investigation, and its current limbo, this isn't really history at all, but reather current events of the most pressing nature.Who was it said that reading such and such a book was like holding lightning in your hands?Reading this book is like reading human blood.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are You Sure You Want THIS Job?
This book is a broad study of about all the large disasters a Fire Officer might need to understand something about. There are statistics, and some very good facts about the many subjects including myths and misconceptions. And UFOs.The chapters are well organized and the print is large enough for relaxed reading. The book is written in a casual, but professional style that keeps your interest.
4-0 out of 5 stars Defintely the MOST comprehensive disaster control book...
How many other books of this type have a chapter concerning how to deal with a UFO crash?Seriously, Chapter 13 is entitled "Enemy Attack and UFO Potential."I've always been a skeptic concerning these types of things, but when a completely serious book like this has a chapter about dealing with UFOs (and one of the authors claims to have seen one), you just have to wonder... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Intensity v. Magnitude
Susan Hough, rising star of the southern California earthquake science scene, and Roger Bilham, professor extraordinaire from the University of Colorado Boulder, have given us a very different earthquake book in _After the Earth Quakes: elastic rebound on an Urban planet_.Hough and Bilham focus primarily on historical earthquakes for which no instrumental readings exist and for which researchers must use anecdotal and often flawed "felt reports" and pre-photographic damage surveys to reconstruct the events surrounding an earthquake. The authors show us how the seismic sciences advanced with each new devastating earthquake, starting with the great Lisbon earthquake [and tsunami and fire] of 1755.The book is more or less chronological through chapter 8 and then splays off like a complex fault zone into more topical chapters [tsunamis, Los Angeles].The book is both optimistic - the use of the term elastic rebound metaphorically to refer to how humans usually react [positively and generously] after a destructive earthquake - and pessimistic - even though scientists long ago internalized the idea that Nick Ambraseys summarizes with the quote "Earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do!", urban humanity may bring on even bigger disasters by failing to enact or ignoring well-designed building codes [often after the cold calculations of a cost-benefit analysis].

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Starts off a little slow and gets a little boring in the middle, but all-in-all Willie Drye does a great job telling the story of the hurricane and the political nightmare surrounding it.The parallels to this disaster and it's lack of leadership to Katrina and the bumbling leaders involved in it (Nagin/Blanco) are uncanny.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Labor Day hurricane of 1935 . . . hmmmm, sounds familiar

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping, real life drama
I read all manner of books but there is nothing quite so completely satisfying as reading a true-story page turner that reads like a novel. Heart of the Storm is just that. Utterly captivating and at the same time educational, the book reveals, in high speed drama, the life and experiences of a small group of helicopter rescue people most of us never have the misfortune of encountering but, but after reading this, may wish we could. Each chapter is prefaced with an account of the large scale events of the times which helps place us in the book, and is briefly anecdoted with personal insights and family life that make the journey Col. Edward Fleming takes us on all the more meaningful and poignant. I don't know why this book hasn't yet been made into a movie but I'd be willing to bet it will be. It most certainly should be.
5-0 out of 5 stars AReal Story by a Real Warrior
A super story about real life heroes doing the daily business of protecting the nation both here and abroad.Col fleming tells it all as an oberver and a participant. His stories are not embellished for the reader, nor do they point to him as the central heroic figure. They do provide the reader with a look into a world that is boring and thrilling at the same time; deftly describing the tedium of daily squadron life as it gives way to the breakneck speed and physical demands of search and rescue over water.
5-0 out of 5 stars So Exciting It Reads Like the Best Fiction - but All True
In Heart of the Storm, Col. Fleming shows that he is as adept at writing about his lifetime of thrilling rescues as he was at performing them. What a career, and what a book!A work of fiction couldn't cover more high profile adventures - rescues he pulled off during the Perfect Storm, at the South Pole, in the Gulf War, just to scratch the surface. But it's not fiction. He really did it, risking his life to save perfect strangers more times than I could count.I don't have the patience to read many books, but this one wouldn't let me put it down. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dennis Smith is 9/11's Studs Terkel
A very readable, moving book that adds still more to the memory-bank of September 11, 2001.The book is divided into two sections: 9/11 itself and the first months afterward, recounted day by day. Most of the second section is Smith's own experiences, with fewer "interviews" with others; however, this doesn't take away from the power of the work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Poetic, Journalistic, Compelling
"Report from Ground Zero: The Story of the Rescue Efforts at the World Trade Center" by Dennis Smith provides a poetic-journalistic look at a tragedy which still continues to shake America. You'll find the book stronger in intensity than many of the photographic collections of September 11, 2001.
5-0 out of 5 stars One part of the story of that horrible day.
As the brother of a New York City firefighter, I felt is was my obligation to read this book. It is a moving tribute to the survivors as well as the deceased. Please read it to understand the quality of the men who were lost and the hope that I still have because of the strength of character of those who survived.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!
This is a wonderful book for any first responder to have.3-0 out of 5 stars Tries to be all things...
and falls short.Jane's Chem-Bio Handbook is much improved over the freebie notepad version they gave out a few years back, but it suffers from a lack of focus. The small size, spiral binding, and tabs suggest it is intended as a first responder or incident commander handbook, but occasional topical discourses suggest that it is meant as a textbook. As a result, it is hard to find the information that would be needed on the scene (an index helps, but only slightly), while the coverage of the various topics is too uneven for it to be a good text.In some places, it seems to be simply a compilation of information from various (US) field manuals.4-0 out of 5 stars Jane's Chem-Bio Handbook: A useful tool
Among those involved with the planning and implementation of specialized, multi-casualty incident response, this book is quite useful.Field personnel, command staff, and planners - all will find it helpful.I foundit to be concise, packable, and physically handy.About the only thing I'dchange would be to laminate the pages for weather resistance.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A farrago of fear and frustration
The cliche of fearing only those who are afraid surely holds true for this book.Posner, a judge, wants lawyers to sit in judgement of which research should go forward and which curtailed. He has lined up a string of threats we face in terms of "catastrophic" loss of human life. There are bolides cruising in space eager to smash into our planet and repeat on us what one did to the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.Physicists tinkering with subatomic particles could trigger a reaction that would shrink the Earth to a sphere 100 metres across."Bioterrorism" is the next thrust from "America's" off-shore enemies. What to do to counter this litany of disasters? He insists we need a policy to address each of them.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Preparing" For The Future
Looking out for future risk into the future. For example, asteroids pose a long-term risk hundreds and thousands of years into the future. We have the technology now to map asteroids and safeguard our future. To a large extent this is not being done. There is a lack of scientific enthusiasm to do this.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not a Dog in these Catastrophes
Great Book, thoughtful and somewhat idiosyncratic analysis of how we should think about and respond to low probability but very large consequence events.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toxic Turmoil
I am a psychiatric epidemiologist and chair of the department of epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.Like many of us in New York, I was deeply affected by the events of September 11th and its aftermath. Moreover, due to my line of work, I was called upon to play arole in dealing with the effects of the disaster, and in preparing for future such occurrences.Seeking to equip myself for this role, I rapidly immersed myself in the literature on disasters and their mental health effects.Among the many materials that I used for this purpose, this book was the single most valuable resource. The introduction provides an excellent perspective, and the chapters are thoughtful pieces which contain many original ideas.I give it the highest recommendation as a base from which to address this field. ...
