5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and overdue
Despite its considerable faults, this book is a terrible indictment of our common humanity. Much of it traverses well-trod ground such as the Armenian and Jewish genocides and the more recent wars of the Yugoslav succession. Other chapters deal with the expulsion of the Greeks from Anatolia and the Soviet deportation of the Chechens-Ingush and the Crimean Tatars.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting with lumping
This book is a good rundown of tragedies that befell people in Europe in the 20th century, and especially it is important that it reminds us of the Armenian genocide and the Greek catastrophe. However there exist two major problems with this text. The first is the use of the word 'ethnic cleansing' a term coind by americans to excuse the was in Bosnia and Kosovo, it was a term that was sopposed to embody racism and remind us of the Holocuast. However the term is disengenous and inaptly applied.Their is a difference between genocide and ethnic cleansing and their is a difference actually between ethnic cleansing and what happaned in Kosovo. No ethnicity was actuallycleansed in Bosnia or Kosovo, rather religions assaulted eachother, same ethnicity, different religion.
5-0 out of 5 stars great resource on some of the worst acts of the 20th century
Fired of Hatred tells of the history of genocide, ethnic cleasining and forced deportation of ethnic groups in the 20th century. It deals with Nazi Holocaust, the most famous case of 20th century genocide and provides information that people might not know like how the Third Reich considered plans to move Jews to modern-day Israel and other locations like Madagascar. It also deals with genocide in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s which is still fresh in people's minds and helps to show the idea of 'never again' mentioned at the end of the second world war never fully materialized. One of the strong points of fires of hatred is that it sheds light on lesser known examples of genocide in the 20th century like that of the Greeks and Armenians in the Ottaman Empire and the treatment of Germans in Poland and Czechoslovakia after the end of the second world war. It also deals with how the U.S.S.R brutally treated Chechnya an important section to better understand the current conflict in that region. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Civil Rights Movement has run its course...?
This was a required text for one of my graduate courses and I didn't expect to enjoy it much. It wasn't far into the book that I began to resonate with some of the struggles for racial harmony articulated by Perkins and Rice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Strong, convicting work
Every person needs to hear this message of racial reconciliation.Easy to read, challenging with a strong message.Read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Is racial harmony possible? Yes AND No!
Spencer Perkins and Chris Rice offer us a vivid portrayal of two men from extremely different backgrounds coming together with their families in true Christian community. The book is open and honest. It will help to lift the cultural blinders we all wear.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Alternate Vision
This book stands as a profound appeal to North American Christians to accept the Church's unique challenge to offer a Biblical social vision to the larger culture. The authors' hermeneutic argues for an often overlooked understanding of the true multicultural people of God.The Church in its diversity can present a new cultural alternative by visibly demonstrating that the "wall of separation" has indeed been removed by Christ. Not claiming to have all the answers, the authors seek to help develop new sensibilities in Christians that will recognize and confront the pervasive influence of cultures of origin.
3-0 out of 5 stars We need better answers
I would like to be more positive about this book than I feel able to be. It asks some good questions and it does tell some great stories. The cause of desegration in church and society, and the need for credible multicultural Christian witness certainly requires a combination of theology, history and sociology such as this book attempts. However in my view the overall treatment is unnecessarily disappointing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Christians
A multiethnic group of authors (white, black, asian) tackle the topic of multiethnic Christian congregations (defined as congregations where no race makes up more the 80% of the congregation). These churches are rare today, and the authors lay out the argument for the need and benefit of multiracial congregations. From the sound theological basis the authors lay out to vignettes about successful multiethnic churches to debasing contemporary arguments in support of segregation, this book has it all. You will come away with a better understanding of the multiethnic church and the need for more such churches today, as well as an excitement for the task ahead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodbye 'free speech zones'!
Gould's comprehensive work explains how speech restrictions were introduced and thrive in the 'free' college campus. Supposedly implemented to protect students, these 'free speech zones' were really about following the lead of other schools who implemented them first.

Editorial Review

I am going to say it clearly and succinctly: this brand-new book is one of the most important scholarly works of the year. Seeking to understand why some people were poor, homeless, criminally inclined, mentally ill, and in other ways socially inadequate, 19th-century theorists turned to the science of eugenics, the concept of genetically unfit people. This stunning book is an exploration of the profound contemporary resonance of this concept and how it directly contributed to such persecutions as the Holocaust.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, but doesn't make the case...
I'm not a biologist, but I've done a fair bit of reading on eugenics. I feel "Unfit" doesn't doesn't make the case it sets out to make. Although there are certainly very silly ideas associated with eugenics in the past, it doesn't mean the science hasn't since become quite refined and persists under different names.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This stunningly brilliant book explores the birth and consequences of eugenics in the world, and its connections to the Holocaust. "The Unfit: A History of a Bad Idea" is thoroughly researched, yet the writing is so beautiful it reads like a novel - a fascinating and disturbing one, which should be read by millions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Two major problems
This book was well written and appeared well-researched and thorough for the most part. There was a wealth of information, and I particularly liked the biological perspective on eugenics.I often hear eugenics addressed in moral and social terms, while the bad science behind it goes unmentioned.I have two major issues with the book, however.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking research
I've worked and taught in the field of peacebuilding for 25 years and consider this book the single most important research that has been done in the field. Varshney breaks new ground in conducting indepth research into why some cities in India into fell into violence and some did not during times of high national tension. 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
Varshney had the opportunity to examine the Hindu-Muslim divide in India using fresh glasses, and he has failed at it. His book is a litany of hackneyed generalizations and simplistic arguments.

5-0 out of 5 stars a work of excellence
Varshneys research is particulary impressive because of the concise research method that he upholds. I am pleased that he has studied both peaceful and violent cities--giving his research model a basis for comparison. I have purchased20 copies of Ethnic Conflict and Civic life and have circulated the work among my friends.Varshney's work gives us hope for world peace. this is the work of utter genius.very impressive research. particulary interesting was his intricate methodology of janwars in conflict. I highly recomment this book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story Poignantly Told In The Voice of A Loving Mother
Mother Mamie Till-Mobley will forever be remembered as a paragon of love, forgiveness, and indomitable strength. This moving memoir was told as only a mother could tell it with both tenderness and the maternal fervor that is so distinctly and universally "Mother." She paints for the reader a portrait of who Emmett was from the time of his birth up to his brutal death, and beyond. For the manner in which this 14-year-old boy was murdered so affected the consciousness of this nation that Emmett became a symbol of how hatred and racism in America not only doesn't exempt Black children, but demonstrates that they are so disposible as human beings that crimes against them go unpunished. The Emmett Till tragedy will forever serve as a shameful commentary on race relations in America, and how the sin of racism has left a permanent stain on the very flag that we say represents "liberty and justice for all."
5-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking but wonderfully written.
Mamie Till Mobley is the mother of the Civil Rights Movement. I wish I had been able to give her a hug. This book should be required reading in every History class. I hope that the recent exhumation of Emmett's body will find evidence to bring some kind of justice to this most horrific tragedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a Death of Innocence
I could not put this book down. My heart and soul wept for Mamie and her Mother. I felt as though I lived alongside them when reading each and every paragraph. I found myself living amongst them in Argo, Illinois.Watching each and every move they made from the moment of Emmett's birth to his death. This was such a very sad time for America. I still cannot comprehend how two grown men could be filled with so much hate that they would murder a child over an alleged whistle. Emmett grew up in Chicago with no fear at all. I thought about his last moments in Mississippi. Was he afraid? Did he think they would have let him go back to his granduncles home? This was truly a sad time in history and Mamie Till-Mosley suffered until her death at the loss of her son. I am happy that they have reopened Emmett's case and the 6 people still alive will be punished. He did not deserve to die this way. This book is a must read for every able bodied American to see how hate can destroy. Mamie fought each and everyday. Her speaking engagements throught the country. She refused to let Emmett's death be in vain. The next time I visit Illinois, I will make it a point of driving down Emmett Till Road. This book is a must read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great study on the History of Apartheid
The structure and narrative of Nigel Worden's The Making of Modern South Africa: Conquest, Segregation and Apartheid is perhaps what makes this volume of the Historical Association Studies accessible not only to historians, but social historians who are looking beyond the nationalism of the African and Afrikaner to study how rural culture and townships in South Africa were affected from the colonial conquests of the 18th Century through the present.Maps of African societies in the nineteenth century; The Union of South Africa in 1910; "Native Reserves" of 1913 and 1936'; and the Bantustans, or Homelands, all provide a tangible, physical view of the changing nature of South Africa's political topography.Worden's extremely detailed Outline Chronology provides the reader with extensive information regarding South Africa from the "Pastoralist revolution" in c. 1000 BCE, through the British annexation of Natal in 1843, to the Introduction of Indian indentured laborers to Natal in 1860, which subsequently ended in 1911.Worden's Chronology illustrates how the making of apartheid was evident even before the South African "Boer" War in 1899-1902 with the Glen Grey Act of 1894 establishing separate land and tax systems for Africans on the eastern Cape.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for Black Parents
Janice Hale writes about her experiences being a single mother and an educator by profession who was trying to ensure that her son was not only treated fairly, but taught in such a way as to ensure his success since she wasn't able to spare the time to do it herself.Although a lot of what she writes about is ethnically-specific (i.e. dealing with her son's teachers pre-concieved ideas about Black youth), there's one part that is applicable to children of any ethnicity:Parents who have the time or the resources to tutor their children had kids who were better students.

This book offers us an opportunity to critically examine what goes wrong with elaborate conspiracy theories. It raises the question, What would have to be true for a worldwide Zionist plot to be true?
1-0 out of 5 stars Interesting views...
I, along with the vast majority of fair-minded people, abhor the authors, the claims, the supporters and the motives of this book.It is one of the more disgusting pieces of literature that has ever been written.Unfortunately, it has been translated into innumerable languages and is taken as truth by many in the region where it does the most harm, the Middle East.
5-0 out of 5 stars What is going on in the world today
They will have you believe it is a hoax, and promote anti-Islamic books for at a mark down, but even if it were a hoax it still certainly explains the events of the world today. Corporate mass media mind numbingly spewing the same incessant garb day in and day out to promote their illegal wars at our tax dollars expense...We can have a look at the white house staff to reassess just how false the books is ...or read aen empire of their own written by Jews of their conquest of hollywood.... Even if it were a book of fiction circulating "anti-Semitic" sentiment and I use the term loosely as only 5% of Jews today are of middle eastern origins the rest are Ashkenazic and European in origin...it still wouldn't explain the staff of the white house and where american interest lies and Israeli one begins.... here are just a few names of the people who govern out country.. This is a profoundly scholarly work that is devoid of racial polemics and more clever defenses of our racism way of life.In a completely dispassionate and academic way, and through 12 separate essays, this manuscript first deconstructs the normal understanding of racism and then rebuilds it into one that is not only intellectually more honest but also one that is much more coherent; one that is about as close to an undistorted view of racist reality as we in America are ever likely to get.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read
For years I have read book about the conditions of life for blakcs in the south prior to continuing through the civil rights era. I have an extensive library of books which subject matter includes antebellum era, slavery, reconstruction, the kkk, civil rights leaders etc, so when I came across this book it was a must read. What peeked my interest more then the subject matter was the fact that in 15 years of reading and research I had never heard about this incident. Needless to say I was very excited to recieve and read this book. I opened the first page of this book with an open mind having read of so many other atrocities perpatrated against blacks in this country it would not surprise me in the least if one of the worst ones in more recent times was government sanctioned.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Story Keeps Moving Along; Answers Deserved
Carroll Case, a Mississippi reporter, partly documented the alleged 1943 mass murder at Camp Van Dorn of over 1,000 African-American soldiers of the 364th Regiment in his book, "The Slaughter." His book is a real page-turner. Even the history surrounding the name of the fort is fascinating.
2-0 out of 5 stars First Hand Account Of Alleged Incidents
I will try to make this very short without covering every event that has occured to me since 1999.First let me say that the book is just that, fiction and nothing more.I started to research my family history around 1999, hoping to find the Grandfather that I never met.My father was raised by his mother and he had no memory of his father at all.My Grandmother always told my father that his father was away in prison.I found my Grandfather in 2002, he was alive and well and living in Tampa Florida.(Very Long Story) During the course of my research, I read just about everything I could on the 364th, not knowing that my Grandfather was a member of the unit during the alleged events! He was number 3,305 on the unit roster. My father was united with my Grandfather after a 60 year time span!My father and I saw him twice before his death on the 6th of August 2003. I questioned him about the alleged allegations and he said that they did not occur! If anyone would like more information, feel free to email me at calsana39@hotmail.com. ... Read more
