2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected...
Alex's last book There Are No Children Here is hard to top, but I tried to give The Other Side of the River a chance. What was the point of the book? To show the different levels of racial tensions within this particular community or to find out who killed the teenager? I am still trying to understand the purpose of the book. I felt like I didn't learn anything new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Writing
I bought this book for my parents since they own property north of Benton Harbor. I started reading the book after I realized I have worked with one of the people in the book. Very interesting. I will not state my personal opinion on the subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I actually lived in St. Joseph when this happened and I do remember all the racial tension. As a child and teenager I was always told never to cross the bridge over to Benton Harbor because of how dangerous it was over there. I moved from St. Joes in 1995 and I did not know about this book until a couple years ago. When I first started reading it, it brought back a lot of memorys. This really is a great book and it does capture the tension between the two towns perfectly. I would really recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How a Frightening Economic Powerhouse Became Just Plain Frightening
In 2005, Detroit looks more like a city awaiting reconstruction after a series of aerial bomber raids than the dynamo of manufacturing it was at the close of the Second World War.The combinations of white flight, race riots, massive deindustrialization by the automotive industry and the industries attached to it coupled with chronic unemployment and discrimination and racism in nearly every facet of life did a great a deal to make Detroit the wasteland it is today.
1-0 out of 5 stars a grad student
Sugrue's thesis in this book is that endemic racism (along with economic decline) is responsible for Detroit being largely Black, poor and greatly in decline. He's a revisionist historian who wants to refute older narratives that Detroit is corrupt (because all the city governments after 1967 have been run by Democrats and Blacks).Instead he attempts to refute that by showing the deeply ingrained racism in the community.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well researched, well written
The Detroit metropolitan area today is arguably the most racially segregated region in the United States, with a primarily African-American, largely abandoned and dilapidated urban center surrounded by layers of primarily white, affluent suburbs. This book is essential reading for anyone who lives in southeast Michigan as well as other cities that have similar histories of industrialization, urban decline and concentrated poverty such as Cleveland, Gary, Philadelphia, and South Chicago.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
As a white male working in a student affairs office at a very diverse community college it is important that I take a good long look at myself to be sure I am serving our students the best way I can. This book is incredibly helpful in doing that.Did I get pissed off at things Mr. Sue talked about?Yes, of course. But he does warn his readers that they will get angry.I only got angry because I didn't want to believe what he was saying was about me, but it is.This book taught me a lot about myself, which I think is the point.I highly recommend this book to anyone that is willing to keep an open mind and is willing to go through some self evaluation.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books Ever...
This is one of the best books ever....I noted that a women said that we complain about racism in this country and do not truly understand what discriminate is...I am grasping that she was European America(i.e. White Ethnic, White, Fair Skinned whatever you want to call it)....I ask you this have your people ever been inslaved for nearly 400 years, have your people ever had attempts of racial/cultural genocides...Is it deeply ingrained in society that your people are lazy, inferior intellectually, etc....You would not even begin to understand, Typical White Person Syndrome...Don't Walk around stupid your whole life....

4-0 out of 5 stars Tuskegee Experiment & Crack Epidemic
Bad Blood points out that the US Surgeon General at the time was Hugh Smith Cumming. In 1939 he was responsible more than any other person for creating the system we now have in place that controls narcotics and other banned substances which San Jose Mercury News journalist and Pulitizer Prize Winner, Gary Webb, said was controlled by a handful of power elites through the CIA.
4-0 out of 5 stars African-American Victims Of Government Laboratory Experiments!!!
One of the least known facts of U.S. history is the government sponsored syphilis experiment conducted upon 399 African-American men from 1932 to 1972.Over the course of these five decades, the U.S. Public Health Service exploited African-American sharecroppers in its effort to determine if the long-term affects of syphilis were different for black people than it was for white people. During the trials, the doctors who conducted the experimentations intentionally denied these men treatment; never informed them of syphilis' destructiveness to their health; and ignored the fact that these men were infecting their respective wives and sexual partners with the disease. As the experiments continued, doctors calculatedly deceived the subjects, informing them that they were suffering from what was categorized as: "bad blood".As the disease ravaged the minds and bodies of these unsuspecting men, no effort was made by the physicians of the Public Health Service to either inform them regarding the disease or provide them with treatment in an effort to curtail its devastating effects.

This remains, without question, one of the most excellent and insightful assessments of race in America. Whether you are a US citizen or an international visitor to the US this book is fundmental to understanding the hidden dimensions of ongoing racial division. Read it and pass it on in the hope that people will recognise the irrefutable evidence of racial segregation offered by Massey and Denton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and important book
This is the most important book explaining the causes of African-American disadvantage in the U.S. today.Packed with data and argumentation, it documents the devastating impact of residential segregation on African-American socioeconomic prospects. One of the best features of the book is the way it subsumes other prominant explanations of African-American disadvantage--for example, William J. Wilson's spatial-mismatch hypothesis, and "culture of poverty"/"black cultural pathology" theories--within its theoretical framework. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars To The Point Skills Teaching
This text provides an excellent overview of the processes and considerations in good ethnographic research.Chapter 1 provides a discussion that introduces the reader to the term ethnography. Those who assume that they already know about ethnography may also want to peruse this chapter for a refreshing and concise review of rationale and terminology. The next chapter describes processes for determining when ethnography should be used. This discussion is especially useful for those in various fields and professions that have recently come to recognize the value of ethnographic methods in their endeavors. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 aid the ethnographer in the pre-fieldwork stage. In chapter 3, clear descriptions of different theoretical paradigms for research (such as "Critical Theory" (pp. 45-48)) are offered so that the reader may have the creative benefit of exploring questions raised by different paradigms.Chapter 4 guides the reader through the conceptual process of creating a research design, and chapter 5 explains how to apply research designs to specific projects in order to generate good ethnographic data. Methods of ethnographic data collection are described in chapter 6, and chapter 7 explores the analysis of this data.Chapter 8 provides a discussion of the types of personalities and relationships that encourage better fieldwork experiences and potential data collection. And chapter 9 describes ethical considerations that are important to note - including Institutional Review Board guidelines. These individuals should be congratulated for bringing such a valuable resource to those interested in using ethnography.Designing and Conducting Ethnographic Research is just the first in a seven volume series that guides the reader through the various stages of ethnographic research - from the conceptual beginnings to the actual implementation of ethnographic findings. Each of these texts is a valuable source - focusing on specific processes and techniques in ethnographic research. For the convenience of those using the whole series, the editors have cross-referenced several issues, topics, and examples in each book with similar discussions appearing in the other books. The editors have also developed a helpful system of symbols, appearing in the margins throughout each book, to flag the reader to key points, cross references, definitions, and case studies. These help to make the facts and examples offered more readily accessible to the reader. The entire series is well written, in clear and concise language, without the presence of heavy anthropological jargon. And when jargon is presented, it is helpfully defined in the margin. Thus, this series is very useful to anyone interested in ethnography, and for individuals at all levels of ethnographic expertise. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One Blood:Confronting the Error of Racism
The legacy of evolutionary theory has been around for more than a century, and its destructive influence has continued to make advances, not only in our culture at large, but even in the church. If there has been any change at all, from evolution's inception to the present day, then it might be found in the way in which the church perceives and approaches this contest between evolutionism and creationism. In fact, in many ways the modern church has capitulated to several of the tenants of evolutionary theory without even comprehending that it has done so - and this needs to change. It is this very issue that is addressed in One Blood, The Biblical Answer to Racism, co-authored by Ken Ham, Dr. Carl Wieland & Dr. Don Batten.Their approach to this subject is quite simple: Racism is an invalid ideology because there is no such thing as multiple races. Instead, there is just one race and it is called the human race. Their assessment of this matter is fully developed in the book, but I would simply add here that the English word itself is often misused and misunderstood in our modern culture. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (full edition), the term race refers to "A group of persons, animals, or plants, connected by common descent or origin." Based upon that definition alone, it is better to assert that there is in fact just one race since we all have our "common descent or origin" from one man - Adam. The principle text that guides One Blood is found in Acts 17 where the Apostle Paul preached the Gospel in Athens:

1.Racial genotypes are hardwired into DNA. The very divergence of racial types goes back too far to account for any of the kind of material presented here. The propogation of species types will continue until intermarriage so mixes the pool that you will have a basically homogenous pool. I doubt that we will ever see that. Asians will make asians. Whites will make whites. and the list goes on.......

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for intro courses on racial/ethnic relations
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is teaching sociology or anthropology classes on racial and ethnic relations as one of the textbooks to use in class. This book introduces students to a wide variety of concepts and theoretical orientations that are or have been prominent in the sociology of racial inequality over the past 50 - 100 years, such as Park's race relations cycle, Gordon's assimilation theory, Hansen's three generation hypothesis, and Moynihan's "culture of poverty" paradigm.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wordy, Difficult to Understand
This book has an important message, but it is hidden in the extremely opaque, scientific and distractingly uninteresting writing style. In fact, I can honestly say I would not have had the patience to read past the first chapter without having been forced to finish it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, bad book
Lippi-Green has gathered together a large amount of linguistic material on accents as social markers and prestige symbols. That is the good part of the book. She is somewhat correct in her analysis of why some accents are high status and some are low status.Mostly, it has something to do with wealth and power. The accents of the wealthy and the powerful are seen as "more correct" than those of the poor and underpriviledged. This is true to a degree but does not tell the whole story. Accent prestige also comes about when the most educated and highly skilled (M.D.s, etc.)and not always wealthy or powerful (teachers, writers) speak in certain patterns. In some cases, accent prestige is simply a result of celebrities speaking in certain ways (this can be seen in the adoption by white middle class teenagers of the black dialect of rap stars who are often from backgrounds that can hardly be considered wealthy or powerful. In the last century, the actor David Garrick was also seen as a model of a "good" accent and set pronunciation standards for many people).Lippi-Green is a fan of social deconstructionist philosopher Michel Foucault and her analysis adheres to one cliche after another. Her dated victimology lessens the value of what would have been an excellent book. Dividing the world into victims and victimizers is simplistic. She labels every categorization that people make based on accents to be discrimination when sometimes it is nothing more than a convenient categorization with no social consequences. This process is universal and occurs even in those groups that Lippi-Green believes are being discriminated against because of their accents (ex: African-Americans are known to percieve the use of "double negatives" ("I don't need no food") by other African-Americans as a sign of being less educated and proper). I also know from my own inner city students how even the underpriviledged categorize each other according to how "ghetto" their speech is. Lippi-Green's use of the very tired and cliched language of oppression made my eyes glaze over in several spots.5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the linguist and non-linguist alike.
This book explores the many issues surrounding language ideology and discrimination in the United States through providing a thorough discussion and empirical examination of the subjective issues which so often permeate such a loaded topic. It is an excellent read for anyone who is seriously interested in either language or subordination or both. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Pluralistic perspectives in America. Well-written and comprehensive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LBJ was the one who really freed the slaves
Just finished an outstanding book by Ira Katznelson on the untold history of racial inequality in America. Those who oppose affirmative action should get it and see who has really benefitted from The New Deal, the Fair Deal, Social Security and the GI Bill after WWII. I cannot see how anyone can read this book and not agree with me that Lincoln did not free the slaves. The slaves were not freed until 1964 and LBJ should be credited with that action.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rooseveltian politics and patricianism, Southern (and Midwestern) white racism, collude; OH, IGNORE THE TROLLS

It was on this basis that this particular point in the Declaration by Jefferson was omited. The Declaration, like the Constitution, was, therefore, in effect a pro-slavery document, which is not nearly as shocking as some would have it as the entire world at that time(with the small exception of a very few Western intellectuals and religious
