5-0 out of 5 stars Professosr Huntington scores again.
This book provides the reader with an objectrive view of what being an American really is and how we got where we are today. It also gives insight into what being an American may become in 40 to 50 years hence if current trends in our culture and immigratrion do not change. It shows the vast difference between the views our elites hold and those held by the public regarding our culture.A provocative, well documented work which paints a disturbing picture of our future.
1-0 out of 5 stars This guy is deluded
Hmm.I am tired of hearing paranoid fools make idiotic fear ridden arguments about the dangers of immigration.I mean really, who actually thinks that this borderline racism is even remotely intelligent??This book is for racist white christians with a narrow outlook on life (replacing science with religion will do that to you) who cringe in fear or run away when they see a smiling colored man with his hat on sideways.
4-0 out of 5 stars A thought provoking exploration of the national identity...
WHO ARE WE explores the difficult, perhaps insoluble problem of American national identity: what is it? how is it changing? will we recognize where it is going?

5-0 out of 5 stars Reclaiming Affirmative Action in the face of White Privilege
Again, as he did in "White Like Me", Wise forces America to look itself in the face and examine the reflection with honesty and integrity. In this book, Wise appeals to common sense, and "scientific minds" for those who need proof for the otherwise obvious, and makes one of the most compelling arguments for affirmative action while rebutting, with countless research, the dubious arguments of those who claim that affirmative action, particulary in college admissions policies, is reverse discrimination and a system of "handouts" to unqualified blacks, who in essence steal the seats from qualified whites. He demonstrates how subscribers to such arguments base their claims almost entirely on the "racial gap" in SAT, ACT, and GRE scores that supposedly "prove" how whites are being discriminated against when blacks with lower test scores take whites' "rightly earned" seats. However, through use of countless research, Wise demonstrates not only how research after research shows that these standardized test neither reflect ability nor determine grades in college. He further shows through research how the tests fail to predict graduation rates for students of any race.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
Even as a person who cares about race issues and followed the Michigan cases with great interest, I found this book to be tremendously eye-opening.Mr. Wise examines many of the myths surrounding affirmative action programs and race, and methodically and persuasively "de-bunks" them, in many cases merely by unpacking the statistics that were cited in the Michigan cases themselves.I've already given this book to several friends to read, all of whom found it as absorbing and fascinating as I did.And I've cited it to many other friends, including a number of black friends, to point out the many myths that have heretofore gone unchallenged, even in the black community.I wish I could give a copy of this book to everyone in the United States.I'd love to witness and take part in the dialogue that came out of that reading project.I can't recommend this book highly enough. And do be sure to read White Like Me, Mr. Wise's other recently published book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We'd Rather Die Striking, If We're Going to Die Anyhow
This new book written by Justin Akers Chacon and Mike Davis addresses the issue of immigrant-directed violence and multiple other aspects of the immigration story in these United States.Published by Haymarket Press of Chicago, No One Is Illegal: Fighting Racism and State Violence on the US-Mexico Border is, among other things, another excellent historyfrom this press of the US told from a popular working class perspective.Black Liberation and Socialism and Subterranean Fire before it, No One Is Illegal provides a refreshing and educational take on the bitter and often brutal history of the US and the people's fight against its excesses.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Argument for Open Borders
I just finished reading No One is Illegal by Justin Akers Chacon and Mike Davis. They conclusion they arrive at is that: "we must reject the language, legitimacy, and limitations of "illegality" and tear down the borders between us. No one is Illegal!"But the way they arrive there is from the perspective of socialists. The authors see the issue of immigration from a labor struggle standpoint. They discuss at length the history of the racism, xenophobia and class struggles that have influenced the United State's immigration policy throughout history. They see almost all events through the lens of labor fighting for rights against a united front of capitalists who thwart them at every turn. They only touch briefly on the topic of organized labors historic opposition to open immigration since it does not fit properly with the theme of the book. The books main message is: "Borders serve only to divide people and reinforce the power of capital over all workers."I agree with that sentiment but would add that borders also reinforce the power of governments over people.
3-0 out of 5 stars We'll need more than Marx and dualistic thinking to analyze this issue
The book made me ponder these questions, wish I had hoped it would answer: Can anyone oppose illegal immigration and NOT be racist, or violent? Can there be a surplus of low wage workers (illegal and legal) in the U.S. that end up competing for less and less slave-level jobs? (See California Cauldron '98 by Clark). Does the country really need more and more undocumented 'taxpayers' to fund the Pentagon and our proto-fascist government? Are there any costs to having more immigrants enter the U.S.? How have 12 million undocumented impacted the American environment and, in some cases, strapped municipal services? What has California's experience with educating the childen of the undocumented been? How does the average American worker (say in New Orleans), unionized or not, feel about ourgovernment cutting a deal with Mexico for easier (legal)access to American employment opportunities? How do poor Americans view illegal immigration? Are failing labor unions in the U.S. drooling to get the union dues of the millions here who the Unions fantasize will join their ranks? (note: I'm a union member). I'd prefer that these questions get answered with on-the-ground social science research conducted in key cities throughout the country experiencing high immigration rates. Let's get those political economy shades off the academic eyes and take a closer look. This book failed. The book Mexifornia failed as well. We need something better. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars More stupid white guilt
I was once very active in "antiracist" action. It took me a while to realize antiracist basically means antiwhite, because you only hear one side of the story: Whites are bad and have caused everyone pain.
1-0 out of 5 stars Counter productive
This book is an excellant example of Liberal thought taken to the level of complete nonsense. Filled with statements such as"It is difficult for any white American not to have an immediate feeling of fear in the presence of an African-American male."(pg 68) and "We expect men of color to be dangerous." (pg 69) and in the context of challenging racism we might see in other whites, "How can we challenge other whites when we may need them in case of attack?"[by a balck male](pg 68) and "...we are more easily deceived by white leaders who have an aura of trustwothiness simply because they are white." (pg 71). These are just a very small sampling of the silly statements that are evident on each page. In an obvious attempt to conjur deep feelings of guilt, the book rehashes all of the horrible things that whites have done to people of color. This is always, ALWAYS!, counter productive. Many of the solutions that he offers will never be taken seriously by Moderate-Liberal to Conservative persons. And that is the real problem with this book-unless you are a far Left individual already predisposed to believing the largely unsubstantiated opinions he offers you will more than likely dismiss everything he says and throw the baby out with the bathwater. Racism does exist. This book offers very little to uproot it.

3-0 out of 5 stars What about black racism?
I'd like books out there to discuss the dangers of anti-white predjucie. I'd like books out there that show it is just as racist to stereotype whites as it is to stereotype blacks or jews.As for the 'white power' reviewer-he is obviously a racist, a self hating white person. As well, calling Hispanics a 'race' is nonsense. There are hispanics who are white, and there are hispanics who are black. There are Italians who are white, and there are Italians who are black.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow service
I recieved this book 1 month after I ordered it. My test I was supposed to take had already passed before I could read the book. All of my other books were shipped to me in less than 2 weeks. Although, the book was in great shaped when I recieved it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
I was forced to buy this book as part of a Minorities in Society course. This book is terrible. The author obviously has an agenda and it bleeds over throughout the text. Although purported to be about various minority groups, it focuses on black males for the most part. Even the chapter on Gender (feminist issues), Sexual Preference, and Disability has a huge section on black males. The author continually blames the government and white males for every problem facing minorities. If you're a white male and want to understand why every social problem is your fault, this is the book for you. Otherwise, find something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best text on race relations
This is the most thorough and theoretical of all the texts out there.Students that don't like to read won't like it because it is challenging material and not "dumbed down" like so many texts are (forexample Shaeffer's "Racial and Ethnic Groups").But theprofessor will find it quite interesting to read and so will the studentswho actually read it.It contains a good mix of theory, research, andexamples. It is not a boring text and even contains some excellent andextensive segments from Richard Wright's "The Ethics of Living JimCrow."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AGreat Text
Several years ago, I adopted this textbook for the course I teach in cross-cultural counseling.I have not regreted that decision since. This deceptively thin and relatively inexpensive text is jammed full of up-to-date and useful information about cross cultural counseling, diagnosis and assessment. The writing style is clear and concise. It is highly readable, because the author does not go out of his way to impress the reader with his extensive vocabulary. He uses plain English whenever possible. The interviews with the experienced "ethnic counselors" are interesting, insightful and thought-provoking.The content gets repetitive at times, but I believe that is probably done in an effort to drive home important points for students and readers.Similarities and differences between various ethnic groups becomes very apparent and the practical issues that arise as a result of those differences are addressed. The history of each minority ethnic groups is examined and the carry-over effects are discussed. In short, I love this text and intend to continue using it for a long time.I just hope that they don't stop publishing it.That would be a shame. If you are loooking for a cheap, yet detailed book on cross-cultural counseling this is the book for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Takes an urgent and serious topic head-on
The Color Of Guilt & Innocence: Racial Profiling And Police Practices In America by law enforcement veteran Steve Holbert and attorney Lisa Rose is a highly readable discussion of the all too common practice of racial profiling in America. Discussing data collection and analysis programs used to help determine whether racial profiling takes place, issues of civil liberty, police reaction to accusations, and much more, The Color Of Guilt & Innocence takes an urgent and serious topic head-on without losing itself in excessively confusing terminology or philosophy. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally somebody gets it
I have been a cop for 17 years. I was skeptical of another book on racial profiling that bashes cops. A friend of mine gave me this book to read for training, and i was very surprised that someone finally got it.There is so much about this topic that the public does not know. This book finally gives a cops perspective and tells why, in most cases, cops are not racist.Every person in America racially profiles, and this book explains why. I was fascinated by the in depth discussion in one chapter that explains racism. The book also opened by eyes to the harm the victims suffer at the hands of some cops. I think everyone has something to learn from this book. The book finally sheds some light on data collection and why it will not work. Instead of re-hashing the same old "solutions," the book actually explores some innovative new ideas that should be implemented by law enforcement. Thanks for covering this subject in a whole new light!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible and comprehensive work on this subject
I am an avid reader on the subjects of civil rights and racial profiling. This book, simply put, is incredible. I thought I had a firm opinion on the subject, but after reading this book, I really see that there are two sides to this complicated issue. All is not always what you see. This book covers every possible aspect of this subject, and delves into areas that I have not seen covered before. I had never before considered the side of law enforcement, nor did I understand what was really going on behind the scenes. I also never really viewed this subject outside of the "black and white" issue. The authors reminded me that racial profiling effects every one of us. Now I can more effectively become involved in the fight towards racial justice with a more focused understanding of why racial profiling occurs and what can be done to stop this practice. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Careful, unbiased review of the evidence
There is nothing casual about this book's consideration of racial bias in the criminal justice system. The authors offer a very careful, balanced and thorough evaluation of racial bias in the various stages of the arrest, sentencing, incarceration, etc. based on a comprehensive consideration of the evidence from numerous studies. What is so striking about this study is that the authors are able to describe this evidence in a very understandable way that should be accessible to the general public. They find that while some areas of the criminal justice system are racial discriminatory, others are not. An excellent book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative - YES; balanced and unbiased - NO!
I purchased this book as recommended supplementary reading for a college level criminal justice course. The book is advertised as "Comprehensive and balanced" and "uniquely unbiased" on the back cover.I was hoping for a book that honestly and objectively presented both sides of the debate regarding race and crime.I am not qualified to debate the accuracy of the data presented, or to argue that the authors are incorrect in their charges of discrimination in the criminal justice system. However, the book adamantly asserts that discrimination is responsible for the disparity between races in the crime data and casually dismisses opposing arguments. The authors presentation is neither balanced or unbiased. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hitler's Social Darwinism
The review by G. Sherwood is silly.
3-0 out of 5 stars Americans have to take some responsibilty.
Weikart's "Darwin to Hitler" conveniently glosses over the American eugenics movement. Long before Hitler came to power, eugenicists in the U.S. had enacted laws, promoted a social agenda for "Human Betterment," and waged war against the weak. Gays and "sexual deviants" were the first to be targeted by Hitler, and "Paragraph 175" was the law easily enforced because gays did not have political support. After that, Hitler closed many enlightened hospitals for the mentally and physically handicapped, and then sterilized the patients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a beginning
This book is a noble beginning at documenting the voices of those in inter-racial relationships.Unfortunately this is just that, a beginning. What about a relationship between a Mexican woman and an Asian man, or an Indian woman and a white man? What about all the other races in America.Today Latinos make up that largest minority group and yet there is no book documenting their inter-racial marriages. This is because books like this perpetuate an obsession with black-white race, rather then expanding the study to include all races and all relationships. It could have just been an overlook of the author to not include more diversity but it appears as if the book itself might be racist because it doesn't bother to look at the fact that inter-racial relationships are not `taboo' but rather are the norm between all the races in America, yet all the attention seems to be put on the black and white relationships.5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You!!!
I am the white partner an interracial relationship, and the mother of a beautiful biracial daughter. I came across this book years ago in my college library, and I loved it so much that I special ordered a copy of it through a local bookstore. I would just like to say thank you to the authors for writing it!Read more

Editorial Review

Like many white South Africans of his generation, Rian Malan fled hiscountry to dodge the draft. He felt incredibly guilty for this act, but would have felt equally guilty for not doing it: "I ran because I wouldn't carry a gun for apartheid, and because I wouldn'tcarry a gun against it." Malan, the product of a well-known Afrikaner family, returned toSouth Africa and produced Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars memoirs of an Africaaner-1970-1990
Before a recent visit to S. Africa, this book was recommended as an introduction to the political climate in S. Africa, especially after Apartheid. This very personal account told by Rian Malan, whose ancestors were directly responsible for the formation of the Apartheid society, traces his teenage rebellion against Apartheid, his career as a liberal newspaper reporter and his ultimate rejection of the violence that the new government has spawned. Be prepared for graphic descriptions of violence committed by both whites and blacks.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Look into the Afrikaner Mind...
I really enjoyed this book, although I do have some problems with it.First and foremost I will recommend it because I think it offers amazing insight into the psychology of Afrikaners and should be read-by any serious student of South African History. It is a valid historical document in that sense, because it is an honest and well-written, and sometimes deeply moving, biographical accountof a "liberal" Afrikaner who has to struggle with his progressive ideals and his residual prejudices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent, brooding work
This book came out when I was working in South Africa. It explores in an uncompromising way two rival phenomena: the hopes of 'white liberalism' and some harsh realities of South Africa's 'African-ness' which many urban liberals at that point seemed to pretend either were not there or were somehow only a function of apartheid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Race remains our most significant social issue
I read this book hoping to find some ideas about the status of race in post civil rights America.Although I found the book helpful and infomative, I do remain highly concerned that the issues the book addresses seem static. The authors do offer a lot of statistics and concise ideas to help understand the problems concerning race in America.4-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars, against Stephen Thernstrom
Should one send political scientists to do a historian's job? That is the question one has to ask about this book compiled by a consortium of political scientists, in response to the "racial realism" of today's right-centrist consensus. This consensus, argued by such authors as Jim Sleeper, Tamara Jacoby, John McWhorter, The New Republic and the renowned historians of American immigration Stephen and Abigail Thernstrom, argue that racism is not really a problem in American life.To the extent that African-Americans are disadvantaged it is because of their own failings or, somewhat more tactfully, the failings of the black politicians and the guilty liberals they (overwhelmingly) support.5-0 out of 5 stars Informative & Thought-Provoking
It presents information in such a way that you are at the very least, forced to consider what they've presented. As a self-identified "African-American" who considers himself a conservative, I think this book does a great job of presenting the foundation of how the problem of race still exists and presents pragmatic ideas - however controversial - that are far better, in my view, than maintaining the status quo.Read more
