5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any who would understand 1960s black activism and its lasting legacy.
MURDER IN THE MODEL CITY: THE BLACK PANTHERS, YALE, AND THE REDEMPTION OF A KILLER begins in 1969 and follows four members of the Black Panther party who committed murder in Connecticut and fled. Nine Panthers would eventually be tried with crimes from that night - and activists of all denominations descended on a small New England city to protest. Paul Bass and Douglas Rae recreate events, politics, and social issues during the stormy period, bringing to life the sentiments of all sides. A 'must' for any who would understand 1960s black activism and its lasting legacy.

4-0 out of 5 stars At this point, Mumia's guilt or innocence is immaterial...
First of all, I'd like to say that at this point, it doesn't matter if Mumia is guilty or innocent because the fact is, in this country we have something called Procedural Law, which mandates that if certain rules and guidelines are abused in a criminal trial, the case/charges at hand should be dropped. That is precisely what happend in Mumia's case. If you read this book (or any article about Mumia for that matter,) it's clear that the rights afforded to any prisoner were violated in his case and that the violations of procedure were so great that his case should be dropped and he should be freed, regardless of anything else.
1-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
Mumia Abu Jamal is not a great writer. He is, in fact, barely a GOOD writer. And if he hadn't murdered Daniel Faulkner in the 80's, he'd be just about nobody right now.
4-0 out of 5 stars very intersting and very scary
very very interesting points made by Mumia in this book.It is a shame that this country imprisons more people than anywhere on Earth and yet has abandoned all efforts to reform the individuals who are put into jail (many falsly due to economic status and especially race.Although at some times the book seems just a little bit repetitive, it is still filled with very sobering facts about our justice system which are well researched and presented with the tone of someone who is generally concerned about his people. ... Editorial Review

"Hutus kill Tutsis, then Tutsis kill Hutus--if that's really all there is to it, then no wonder we can't be bothered with it," Philip Gourevitch writes, imagining the response of somebody in a country far from the ethnic strife and mass killings of Rwanda. But the situation is not so simple, and in this complex and wrenching book, he explains why the Rwandan genocide should not be written off as just another tribal dispute.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was disappointed by the tone of the first chapter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable and Life-Changing
This book will change your worldview.Gourevitch makes you realize how much we marginalize Africa, and how we refuse to recognize unpleasant realities to avoid the responsibility for dealing with them. While his account includes a lot of horrible examples of inhumanity, there are also some splendidly inspiring examples of humanity, which make you believe that change is possible, and even ultimately inevitable.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a horrific tale
A lot of books I've read down through the years, even books I have enjoyed, I have forgotten almost as soon as I finished them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius
What sets Duke's work apart from others in the field is his ability to document every detail.Corresponding to each proposition is a host of footnotes and material you can add to your reading library.I bought copies for friends and family. It's excellent to place on the coffee table for anyone who comes to dinner. They won't be able to put it down.

Great book.
5-0 out of 5 stars ZIONIST JEW 101 FOR DUMMIES
David Duke has written a wonderful book exposing the plans of the elite of International Jewry. Covering many topics and historical periods, the book is well researched and documented; and serves as an outline for one interested in this fascinating subject to go check it out for one's self. Studying Dr. Duke's book will lead the reader into an honest look at the way the world is run, and will ultimately be much more satisfying than the lies and bunk one finds in the politically correct, communist university classrooms of today. Highly recommended to those who think outside the box, and who can deal with truth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
THIS BOOK IS FULL OF ALOT OF INTERESTING FACTS AS WELL AS PLAUSIBLE HYPOTHESIS ON HOW THE "CAUCASOID RACE" HAS COME TO DOMINATE THE WORLD THROUGH MILITARY MIGHT, FORCE, RESOURCE RAPE, AGGRESSION AND GENOCIDE. OF COURSE MANY WILL NOT AGREE WITH THE BOOK AND MANY WILL NOT READ IT. BUT IT IS VERY INTERESTING AND IT OFFERS A PERSUASIVE ARGUMENT TO THE EUROCENTRIC BRAINWASHING AND CULTURAL GENOCIDE AGAINST MUCH OF TODAYS HUMANITY. CAUCASOIDS HAVE DOMINATED THE GLOBE FOR OVER 500 YEARS AND THIS BOOK ANSWERS MANY OF THE QUESTIONS AS TO WHY.

I've notice only the white viewers are screaming bigotry now look at the kettle calling the pot a bigot lol, please ppl lets stop pretending that skin color was not and is still not a factor, so if white men or being accused of these astrocities then take note, especially were white scholars admit to this by glorifying how different European nationalities conquered different parts of the world especially Black Africa. And no its not a matter of nature over nurture, you see everyone was not a club swinging baphoon lets not keep assuming like a ignoramous that a few findings of old bones of ppls lifestyles speaks for everyone else duh! but hey assuming with very little to go on is the European rationale system lmao! There is a big difference between being civilized and protecting your country from further attacks and being the aggressor who attacks and takes as they please. tsk tsk still in denial, whats next are white ppl going to lie about how they got control over america what a shame so i guess the indians were not the better fighter right? lmao!, more nonsense. Also claiming that everyones condition was primarily influenced by nature over nurture is a unproven claim especially when that had more to do with ones geographical condition which caused the types of different pschological devlepments as it pertains to enviromental survival, so to me this is just another sad cover up from guilt and the truth coming back to slap certain ppl in the face, now if any of the cry babies knew anything about African philosophy or culture then u would know it was nurture over nature indeed the nature of animalistic behavior was denied as shown throughout ancient Egypt and other African related areas to those teachings all the way up to the point of its decline from the western influences who were followers of set the animal or low self the material world lover, next time do the science and cry less.HTP

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this for real?
[...]I was amazed. This guy is not only serious in his convictions; he seems to believe he has single handedly overturned the modern ideas on `race.'This is the kind of book I would have expected to find originally published a hundred years ago, of course with the targets being non-Europeans.Isn't this called racism?Yes, of course it is.So, Mr. Bradley, the races are permanently different?Everything is not only nature over nurture but is also easily discovered by tracing ancestry? All previous and much more thoughtful research has clearly shown that all cultures, or races if you can't get out of that rut, were and are equally prone to what are universal human behaviors.Aggression and violence are not more pronounced in Western Europe, it was simply these westerners who were better able to effect their aggression. I am amazed that this piece of, um, spurious scholarship was published. On second thought I can.I can only hope that only those who seek this kind of [...] will read this, [...], and not a person genuinely interested in history.Especially not someone who comes upon this book early in their explorations of a very interesting area of study. In short, if you have already made up your mind that white men have ruined the world, buy this book and find a companion in your unreasoning conviction. If you have not decided this, don't waste your time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book will stun and startle you
This is a great book. It's very long and takes a while to truly digest, but you'll find so much starling yet familiar material in here, but presented in ways you'll never have thought of yourself. I can't wait for his Endgame series to come out. It should be wonderful if it's half as good as this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important book Ive ever read...
This book saved my life. I have been telling this to Derrick Jensen for years now. This is a real history book on the destructiveness of our culture. It is an in depth study on the exploitation of all living things in a power driven ego trip of those in power.
5-0 out of 5 stars best book i've ever read!!!
I used to think there was something wrong with me. After reading this book, I now know that I don't have to feel like these horrible feelings I had inside were only experienced by me. Now I know WHY I have felt this way about life, and it's all in due thanks to Derrick Jensen! Thanks man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I'd thoroughly recommend this book. It provides a global overview of the disability rights movement, and includes interviews with many activists from different countries. I found it easy to read, and thoroughly interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Disability Issues
This is a well written, thoroughly researched work dealing with the treatment of disabled people in various cultures. The book explores the impact of religious institutions, charities, schools and various other institutions on how the disabled are treated. It also does a remarkable job of explaining how consciousness needs to change in order for progress to be made. It is an extremely thought provoking work which raises many issues. I recommend this book to anyone who may some day be disabled - which is any of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for anyone into disability empowerment
"The oppression of 500 million people with disabilities is rooted in the political-economic and cultural dime sions of everyday life", says James Charlton in Nothing About Us Without Us. Calling his book partdescriptive, part conversational and wholly argumentative, the authorobserves how oppression and empowerment affect and change individuals andthe community. Charlton's interviews with 45 international disabilityrights activists and his own observations as an activist recognize theessential theme of the disability rights movement: a demand for selfcontrol and conditions resulting from the lack of it.The author'sthreefold mission challenges existing epistomologies and ontologies ofdisability. With a close eye on Marxist theory, Charlton explains existingpractices and suggests new foundations, structures and contexts in which tothink about the relationships and conditions of oppression and resistanceand to understand and support disability rights. 3-0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad in this book
First off, I am a white evangelical in a moderately sized city to give you some idea of the perspective I bring to reading this.
2-0 out of 5 stars Petty Politics Disguised as Social Science
I had high hopes for this book, as I was expecting an analysis of why church congregations are one of the most segregated places in America.Except for one chapter (more on this chapter below), that is not at all what the book is about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Racism & Christianity
Sunday Morning at 11:00 a.m. has long been called the most segregated hour in America. And still, many whites refuse to believe that racism is still a problem. This book gives a lot of answers as to why it is still a problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meditation of Jazz and Race
Gene Lees' bok had its genesis as a series of articles nominally written around a common theme, that of race and jazz. The're no real narrative structure here; some of the pieces are narratives, some more essays and some are just rememberances that sort of meander here and there.5-0 out of 5 stars Some unflinching truths about the world of jazz...
Gene Lees strikes me as one of the more level-headed individuals in jazz. Like it or not, the hard-core jazzword is these days filled with elitists, racists (mostly reverse thesedays), and people protecting their "territory."When I see the doings andhear the rantings of the likes of Stanley Crouch and other pretentious writers and "social critics," I am reminded of the character ofMax Mercy from Bernard Malamud's novel (and the movie) The Natural...Mercyisn't interested in baseball and has never played a game, but stirring upcontroversy using baseball as his medium keeps him in the spotlight andmakes him rich.Crouch is much the same way--would any of us have heard ofhim, would he have a tenth of his current income and notoriety were he notclutching the coattails of a currently well-known jazz musician?Lees'discussion of Crouch, of other figures in jazz history, and his inside stories about the jazz world and the psyches within it are like a bucket of cold water to most of what passes for jazz scholarship today. But don't get the impression this is a kiss-and-tell book, or something scandalous.Mr. Lees is actually a rather level headedindividual.A must read for anyone not in any "camp" ordefending any "turf" but who just loves music and musicians and realizes that jazz, like any art, is a mixture and mixing that quickly becomes so intricate it's impossible for any one group to claim they "own" it.Too bad there are only two other reviews of this book on Amazon's page as of this writing.I can see people would rather believe the hypola histories instead.Too bad...
5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent and thoughtful book, marvelously written.
Gene Lees has steadily built a reputation as one of the finest of all writers on jazz. This intelligent, thoughtful, and insightful look at current attitudes on the part of jazz musicians towards race and racial bias is firmly grounded in historical research without being pedantic.Part of the success of this book comes from its organization -- many of the chapters are profiles of musicians and musical scholars which are incidentally used to illustrate the issues under consideration. Whether or not one finally agrees with Lees' premise -- that we have reentered a period of "reverse racism" in jazz -- the quality of the interviews and interviewees makes this an important book, and a wonderful read in the process. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars TREATMENT OF SOUTHERN BLACKS BY THEIR WHITE NEIGHBORS
Many people who live outside the south think all southern white people treat their "darkies" as slaves, even years following the War of Agression.Little do they know just how well the relationship between whites and blacks has been because very few yankees ever heard of facts that told just how well the situations were and are. This book tells the story of just how well that regard is and was. This book needs to be read by all schoolchildren and their parents all over the United States to point out that racism is not just a thing of the south, but is more rampant everywhere as well as in the yankee north than one would suppose. Why did not the northern newspapers outside of North Carolina pick up this story when it was reported almost daily in 1921 by the Charlotte Observer during the trial?I suppose it was way too painful for the northern states to be faced with the fact that their forebears had been so very wrong about the way black men had been treated by the southerners.Oh, yes!Slavery of any one is wrong, but the yankees took it to extremes. And yes, there was bad treatment by many southern slaveholders, but not all.And to fight a war, killing thousands because of it, many in cold blood, was also wrong.

1-0 out of 5 stars Racism as Ideology
One can read this book-and others of its kind-and quickly identify the main suspects. In one corner is the White Man (this includes women unless their sensitive feminists)joining the White Man are the bourgeois, capitalism, sexism, patriarchy, the Christian Church and, from what I read in a Washington Post Book Review, the National Football League. The league exploits black athletes because-well-because the NFL refuses to admit that its racist.
5-0 out of 5 stars People react because it's true!
Having read the book, and now reading the negative comments, it is clear to me that this book strikes a cord, and those who are most outraged are those who are afraid of losing the power and privilege their race affords them.Their reaction is all the more reason you should read this book. I say this as a college educated white woman. The analysis is in depth and historically spot-on.Anyone who wants to understand the predicament we, as a society, find ourselves in - in terms of race relations and class stratification - should read Jensen's book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Marxist Propaganda
This book is just another in a long line of ideologically-challenged tantrums from "privileged White" Academics who inhabit that Utopian dream-world known as the American University. There, where tenure guarantees a comfortable middle-class existence and ideas have no consequences beyond the classroom, these isolated brains are free to develop theories that are generally not derived from observation and experience in the real world, but rather, can only be formulated by those who themselves are benefiting from the very kind of "White privilege" they eagerly condemn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reframing a volatile issue
Racism has been an impediment in living up to our ideals as a democracy. It will continue to be a sensitive and volatile issue here in America unless we make an effort to eliminate it. The authors have done a formidable job in reframing the problem in a way to help us trancend it, come together and work toward a solution to what W.E.B. DuBois called the problem of the 20th century. It's a difficult book but well worth the effort!

1-0 out of 5 stars You are kidding me?
I know that professors from Harvard and UT are smart, but do they really feel the need to express this in their writing? The entire first chapter of this book is nothing but fluff, using nearly incomprehensible $5 words. The authors do not get their point across in a clear and concise manner and the rest of the book suffers because of this.Do not buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely and bold
A bold call for bringing people together and transforming society. If you are class conscious and anti-racist read this book, it will be worth the challenge. ... Read more
