4-0 out of 5 stars An informative read
In his book, Tonry delineates the state of crime in the U.S. in a well-developed disscussion of crime policy, rates, and philosophy.5-0 out of 5 stars Mastery of the Institutional Racism that is everywhere
Michael Tonry takes an in-depth look into the racism that permeates every level of the criminal justice and law enforcement institutions in this country.Tonry's book covers racial profiling, racially targeted crime policy, the unnecessary War on Drugs, punishment, sentencing policy, and the like.Reading Malign Neglect can lead to the basest of conclusions:that "The Burden on Black Americans" is vast and deeply entrenched.5-0 out of 5 stars A tremendously important book
"Malign Neglect : Race, Crime, and Punishment in America" is one the more revealing and informative books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. In looking at America's racist crime policies over the last coupleof decades, Tonry illucidates what has been a virtual war againstminorities and the poor.Read more

Editorial Review

In its heyday during the height of segregation, the little resort of American Beach, Florida was the African American Hyannisport, where the crème de la crème of black society came to enjoy what the town motto called "recreation and relaxation without humiliation." These days, it's more like the African American Daytona Beach--that is, visited mostly by partying teenagers who come to drink and get rowdy in the town's deserted streets. What happened between then and now could be fodder for a sociologist's study, but journalist Russ Rymer turns it instead into a grippingly personal story of race, money, greed, and the struggle over who owns--and interprets--cultural memory.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Change One's Views
I found this book, in first edition and excellent condition, at the Oakland Library book sale. I paid $3.60 for it and consider it one of the best bargains I've gotten in terms of value. This book needs to be read by anyone attempting to understand black culture, the effects of commercialism and the Disneyfication of our cultural heritage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Disney vs. democracy
I have very mixed feelings about this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very touching biography and more.
Having just finished "Slaves in the Family" by Edward Ball when I came across this book, I was struck by a completely different slice of black history and the black condition. Here is the story of thegreat-granddaughter of a black millionaire who leads a very privilegedlife, attends Oberlin college, has a fairly short but successful career asan opera singer in Europe, and then returns home to see her mother die, thefamily fortune dissipate and her world fall apart. It is also a plea forhistorical preservation and environmental protection. A very poignant andyet inspiring true story. I sang with Marvyne Betsch in the College Choirat Oberlin, and can still hear the unique dark timbre of her voice after forty years! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for it's honesty and and intellectual acumen
Having read this book in 1992 and recently purchased it for my collection, this a great read with various chapters based on history, politcal, and social mores of African- Americans(in the black corner)and our archenemies White Americans (in the white corner). got to hype up the race war angle some of you white conservativeswho are doing it in your reviews about this book. If you have a politcal agenda you will either like or hate Hacker's book based on your politcal afilliation, If you are a Liberal, you may like the senstive and fair airing he gives towards the history of why we became two nations. If you are a conservative or Neo- Nazi type like the white racist from georgia that African- Americans have no morals,or you will hate that he's giving Black folks a pass on their moral problems.
4-0 out of 5 stars Two Nations: Black and White, Seperate, Hostile, Unequal
This book points out, that even in the 21st Century; the separation of black and white, with hostility and un-equality still exists.

3-0 out of 5 stars Isn't this book a little onesided?
I have found this book interesting and it has opened my eyes to some new things. I would not be surprised if much of it was true. The thing that I object to is that every story has two sides to it. I have known Arabs that were good people and I do not believe that Islam is evil per say. They were the civilized people when we Europeans were barbarians in the dark ages and did not know how to read or do math or that we should take a bath. We owe some thanks to the light the Arabs kept alive that contributed to kindling the renaissance and bring a new age of learning into the world. I am a Christian and believe that "Jesus is the way, the truth and the life" but I am aware that the Christian religion has a dark side to its history also. There have been and still are people who think they understand it and want to enforce it with the "sword". I love being an American and am grateful for the goodness and freedoms that are found in our country, though I know that we have a dark side to our history also with such things as slavery and our dealings with Native Americans and the many broken and unfulfilled treaties we made with them. I am also aware that the state of Israel has done things in there history that was not right. I don't know if we can ever learn to live together as a world community, but I do not believe that hating and distrusting all Arabs will help much. We need to live in the real world and I don't know all the answers, but I think that we ought to look for the good in those we come in contact with on an individual bases and try and build on that. There is too much of self-righteousness and hate and misinformation spread on all side. I found this book to be a bit one sided.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening
I'm more than halfway through. I have to stop all the time to tell my family about it. I feel like I've been betrayed by the media and our government and our schools for never mentioning this information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for Cindy Shaheen/MoveOn/Howard Dean
I've read many books that dispelled all of the myths about why Muslim Fundamentalists hate us (and, of course, Israel). These include the CIA agent Michael Scheuer's ( & Cindy Shaheen)"Jewish Lobby" excuse, the poverty excuse, and of course the Israel's "occupation."

2-0 out of 5 stars All white people must be evil...
If you want a book that tells you how all white people are secretly racist and want to protect thier "white supremacy" then this is the book for you. Nothing more then a list of how whitie is keeping the poor minorities down with sources that share the same feeling. Do not expect to find any actual debate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Co-Winner of 2002 ASA Oliver C. Cox Award
This book was the co-winner of the 2002 Oliver C. Cox award given by the American Sociological Association. The book combines powerful theoretical chapters with substantive chapters describing the subtle and slippery yet effective post-civil rights' racial structure (he labels it "the new racism) and racial ideology (color blind racism) of the United States. This is a solid contribution to the area of race and ethnicity and an excellent choice for courses on racial and ethnic matters in the United States. Professors searching for a challenging book on the nature of contemporary racial discourse need not look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars almost faultless
Almaguer has given us a useful history of racial attitudes and white supremacy in nineteenth century Cali. Avoiding a "binary"-- or black/white-- understanding of racial relations, Racial Fault Lines traces the unique racial sagas of Mexicans, Chinese, and Indian peoples in their encounters with "white" Californians. Almaguer could do more to investigate interactions among such groups ACROSS the categories of "racial otherness": Mexican, Chinese, and Indian. SOme readers will also question his chronology and wonder to what extent the 'origins of white supremacy' in California might have begun much earlier than the mid-nineteenth century, where his book focuses. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging the reader to reconsider long-held preconception
The Racial State by David Theo Goldberg (Director of the system-wide University of California Humanities Research Institute and Professor of African American Studies and Criminology, Law and Society at the University of California - Irvine) is an astutely written, scholarly account that blends political and social theory, in a meticulous and deftly written study of the intersection of race and the formation and government of nation-states. Challenging the reader to reconsider long-held preconceptions, The Racial State is an erudite and very highly recommended college-level study which breaks new ground in its seminal analysis of human, social, and governmental behavior. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous first full encounter with bell hooks
Until now I have only read excerpts from bell hooks' works. Then I recently saw a C-Span program in which bell hooks led a discussion with a college audience. Reminded of the intriguing excerpts I had read, I chose Black Looks as my first full encounter with this intriguing woman's thoughts.5-0 out of 5 stars Powerfully Moving
I'm biracial . . . my father is white and my mother is black, Latina, and Asian. hooks makes us look deeply and critically at the linkages of race, class, gender, and sexuality in ways that are painfully honest and moving. Oppression is never an easy topic. As she has stated, reading hooks' work should make us feel angry, sad, & uncomfortable. Finally, an intellectual who goes beyond the "taken-for-granted" simplistic non-analysis and makes us THINK DEEPLY! This book is a classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bell Hooks is a Gifted Thinker
The cover of this book caught my attention at the library, so I just had to check it out. I must say, Bell Hooks's ideas and opinions are right on the money. She mentions issues such as black male masculinity, feminism, and racism and breaks them down very well. She's not the average traditional black feminist. She's not afraid to talk bad about white folks (like Madonna) and she's brave enough to use the word "white supremacy"; not in a militant way, but more reserved. It's easy to tell she's a liberal, but she's not restricted to traditional left-wing philosophy because of her strong Afro-centric view-points. This is a must read for all Black people, especially Black women who hardly have any intellectual role-model to look up to. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars That's It, I'm Outta Here....
This was the third installment of the "ETHNOGRAPHER'S TOOLKIT" series I have suffered through (against my will, to be sure), and it was nearly enough to make me give up on being a social scientist altogther.Actually, this is true for the whole series, or at least Volumes 1,2, and 5 which I've read. The entire span of books takes a homogenized, cookie-cutter approach that managed almost completely to suck the life out of the practice of anthropology for me.4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, if narrow

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Growing up in Detroit in the 40's and 50's I remember the respect we were taught to adults be they black or white. If you were on a street car and a lady got on and you were the youngest you would surrender your seat. it didn't matter if the lady was black or white. Then came the riots in the 60's and the flight to the suburbs, which we all made. It has remained. Whites and blacks have gone further and further out, some driving up to forty miles to work in Detroit. It is not as much a race thing as disrespect from black and whites in the city. There is not respect for the law, elderly or even themselves. In turn this is where all our large citys are failing. The drug dealers run the citys and it is in plain view. Ask anyone that lives in the City. Drugs are big money and it works its way up the line to the politicians.Without law and order no one will return no matter what race they are. That is my opinion to the problem with the only answer I can see.

3-0 out of 5 stars My review
Studs Terkel has done some very good things with this book and he clearly is a talented interviewer with a strong grasp of the state of race relations in the US.I don't know that this book was particularly well written as he really did little more than aggregate a lot of (often, not always) interesting interviews.I'm not sure the book is still contemporary and I do feel that race relations have come a good ways along since this book was written. That being said, I do think this book is very worthwhile for most anyone, even today. While it was very interesting to gain insight into minority views on the Reagan administration, Farrakhan, etc., I think I honestly gained more from the every day stories and perspectives that were related. It will certainly get you to think about race relations from an entirely new perspective and that is far and away its most valuable aspect.

5-0 out of 5 stars How America Grew
Iron Cages American History from the days after the revolutionary war to the Spanish American War during a time when the country grew in size, population, and importance. Takaki looks at these issues showing American philosophy of moving westard and expanding trade. He focuses on the race relatted issues of the period such as the roles of Native Ameiricans, Blacks and Chinese in this country.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant study
Professor Takaki picks up where Max Weber left off, in that he illustrates how white men of means - those "culture makers" of early American society, effectively raised the American level of technical rationalization to not only oppress Africans, Asians, Mexicans, and Native Americas, but how that heightened level of rationalization ultimately subsumed those "culture makers" themselves. (He briefly illustrates how this animus was turned toward women in helping to define what white men were not.) He connects the ascendency of technical rationalization to the rationalization employed by a religious ethic that stresses religious salvation through work and the suppression of natural instincts. His study is not accusatory; it is illustrative. 5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book by a brilliant author.
I was privileged to be Ronald Takaki's student at the University of California, Berkeley when he was completing his research on this insightful, wonderfully enlightening work. The course he taught from hisresearch was the most meaningful, stimulating, truly inspirationalI have taken in my many years as a student.Dr. Takaki is not only intellectuallyincandescent, but is a profoundly humane and compassionate man.As a highschool social studies teacher, I have included Dr. Takaki's premises andconclusions in every class I teach and never fail to see the same sort ofepiphanies in my students that I, myself, experienced.Dr. Takaki makesentirely comprehensible the paradigm of racism, sexism and elitism whichhas so long prevailed in our society; and his observations are as pertinentand contemporary today as they were a quarter of a century ago.Amarvelous book! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars More of the same...
After being assigned a reading list about racial relations in the US, I began the process of reading each book. This book was at the top of that list. 5-0 out of 5 stars Racism In A Nutshell
How often have you walked around thinking about an issue, thinking how helpful it would be if you could only articulate those thoughts? And, one day, you pick up a book and find that the author has spoken for you, clearly defined those issues and provided a history that explains the causes of your disquietude?George Lipsitz has done just that in "The Possessive Investment In Whiteness... ."Why is affirmative action under attack and by whom? How do Euro-Americans benefit from skin privilege whether they are racist or not?Why is California "the Mississippi of the 1990s"?What was the real agenda of Mr. Bakke in launching a legal battle against "reverse racism"?Who was Bill Moore? What are the roles of Clarence Thomas and Ward Callender in claiming and perpetuating a conservative agenda that supports skin privilege?Lipsitz answers these questions and more. While Lipsitz speaks from a decidedly liberal stance, he supports each of his contentions with a shopping list of facts to support them.5-0 out of 5 stars Provactative, Informative and Healing
Lipsitz's book not only informs (with one of the best summariesI've seen of the social, economic and political impact ofinstitutionalized white supremacy throughout the twentieth century) heoffers hope that humanity will heal the deep wounds of white racism. The book insightfully explores the reasons why so-called "white" people continue to be complicit in racist oppression, how whiteness and white privilege are used by politicians, and how the psychology of whitness functions. His willingness to relinquish and critique his own white privilege in the name of social justice is the healing message that humanity needs in the wake of so many "white" atrocities. ...
