5-0 out of 5 stars Sports Car and Competition Driving (Driving)
Interesting book. nice anecdotes.all the physics one might want to know is included in there too..
4-0 out of 5 stars A very friendly book!
From the first glance, I liked that book much! It is written in a very friendly tone, clear language! It begins with a large chapter about the driving position; there are lots of photos with the right and wrong poses, with analysis of each case. The evolution of the correct driving position is also exposed. Then goes a chapter about power, torque and when to change the gear to achieve different goals: fuel economy, engine lifetime, maximum speed. After that there is a section about the correct braking and pedaling.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for drivers of all levels!
Although this book is clearly geared towards people with experience, there are pages dedicated to how to adjust your seat and the mirrors, when and how to brake, using the accelerator for best effect, etc. Everyone can learn something (or a lot) new from this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for concerned parents
Our oldest child has his learner's permit, so this is a first for us.We required him to read Mr. Berardelli's book before we took him to test for the learner's permit and we are using it as a blueprint in teaching him to drive. It is very well organized and reminds us to cover small details we might otherwise overlook. We especially like the 100-hour log.Our state only requires 40 hours with a parent while behind the wheel, but we've made it clear we'll be requiring Mr. Berardelli's 100 hours before a license can be obtained. Our metropolitan area lost more than 20 teens last year in traffic accidents, including one from our son's school and the wreck happened right down the street from us at 5:30pm, with no drugs or alcohol involved.Last year's teen record in our area was frightening. This book just gives good, sound advice about preparing a teen to drive.

2-0 out of 5 stars A few pointers in a haystack of filler
I like the spiral binding, but the content of the book, like cotton candy, melts down to little substance. To pick an example: there are three (3) vacuous paragraphs just on cleaning the windshield, with a canonical list of substances that can dirty the windshield and platitudes like "It doesn't take long before the glass becomes dirty. So it is a good idea, *every* time you start out..."--It's just filler and it's tiresome to read. The book is also poorly written in other ways and needs a good basic editing, the type a grade school English teacher could do.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This book is an excellent resource for anyone teaching a teen to drive. It gives specific suggestions and tasks that go beyond the typical training, so that the new driver experiences potential dangers in a controlled environment and practices needed skills. It does take an investment of time on the part of the parent (as well as the teen), but I can think of no better investment you can make than the safety of your teen driver. If you are looking for something to help you structure driving lessons, to make sure you don't overlook something your teen will need to know someday, this is the book you want.I recommend it for anyone teaching someone to drive. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
A fair read. Author talks too much about his military days, and I am sure there are better driving books out there. There is more basic security concerns directed towards females written in this book then actual driving techniques. Save your money and buy a different driving book, unless you are giving this to your mom or wife who problay wouldn't like to read this anyway. There was like 1 or 2 interesting chapters realted to driving in here, not enough in my opinion to warrant buying the whole book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Niki Lauda said he read this book.
The classic corner lines and driving technique discussed. I bought this book based on Niki Lauda's (F1 World Champion 1975, 1997) recommendation of it in one of his books.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book about cornering!
This book, first published in 1959, is mostly devoted to cornering, and this is the best publication about turns on flat surfaces with high adhesion, used in sport racing, and this information is still valid.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not enough
I found the information somewhat outdated most explanations in the book are better done elsewhere. The book deals with offroad recovery situations most fourwhelers will never experience. I suggest going to a basic offroad "live" class and forget this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Recovery
The book was a little disappointing. It covered the topic and had some very detailed number crunching charts. But for the money Four-Wheeler's Bible is just as good on recovery and has many other topics for the same price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's comments
I was interested to see a number of comments.I realise that it may be complicated and strove not to make it dependant on maths. What prompted me to put the book together was a collection of briefing and lecture notes that I had created while running my small company and giving instruction.I was acutely conscious of some glaring health and safety failings on the part of many people undertaking off-road (ie emergency) style recoveries. In the main it is not intended to be a collection of 'if you are stuck like this photos' and this again was a conscious decision because of the enormously wide variety of situations that could occur. In any case the understanding behind such a picture would still be necessary otherwise the learning point would be reduced.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's the Bible !
Whether you are a student of motorsport, or just interested in fast driving, this is quite simply THE reference book. It's the original, and the best. 5-0 out of 5 stars Describes how to drive fast safely.
Denis Jenkinson uses his motorcycle side-car racing experience and his work with Sterling Moss as his navigator during his record run in winning the 1955 Mille Miglia race in the Mercedes-Benz 300SLR to describe with practical examples how to drive fast safely. Sterling Moss ranks within the five most talented race car drivers of all time. Denis Jenkinson combines his sensitivity to the nuances of driving fast smoothly with his grounding in practical engineering and physics. He explains the dynamics of automobilies at speed, the need for concentration, acute vision, and situational awareness with practical experiences of driving fast on one thousand kilometers of two-lane Italian roads. This book is uniquely appropriate to learning the art of driving smoothly and quickly on public roads ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cool anectodes but fairly useless for learning driving techniques
I've read a lot of books about Performance driving/racing techniques lately and I have to say that this one pretty much ranks at the bottom.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for those of us who will never see F1
It has been a while since I read this book, but I disagree with those who only see it as a plug for Bondurant's racing school. This is a well-written explanation of vehicle dynamics, and contains a wealth of information that is useful in everyday driving.I have tried to apply what I learned from this book in various low-buck automotive sport competitions, and frankly I just don't have what it takes to excel in motorsports.I do appreciate, however, Bondurant's efforts to explain everything from seating position, to how to place your hand on the sift knob, to proper line through the corner to gain the fastest exit speed.I believe reading this book has been at least as much benefit to my every day driving skill as the mega-buck 3-day race car driving school I took a few years back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to get you started
If your just starting out in racing, I highly recommend this book. The sections that are most interest for me were the chapters on driving lines and the chapter on how to read tire temperatures after coming off track. From my view-point since I am the set-up guy, reading tire temps is invaluable.Other than the driver input, this is the only other input you have at the track that tells you what the car is actually doing.Great info in my opinion with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stock Car Driving Techniques
I love racing, watching and participating. I like to know about all the technical stuff that other fans might not care about, and this book does a good job explaning all of the thing a racecar driver must know to be successful. Being involved in local racing, and hoping to someday be a professional, I found this book informative and helpful. Aspiring young racecar drivers must read Stock Car Driving Techneques, by Don Alexander. However, the common race fan might not finde the book very interesting. Talk of traction circles and spotter communication might bore some readers. In short, good for racecar drivers, borring for fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable reading for anger management studies.
What are the symptoms of road rage and how can aggressive driving patterns and encounters be halted? In Road Rage and Aggressive Driving, the authors trace these problems to childhood roots and attitudes toward the law: they argue that road rage is experienced by most drivers, and tell how to use self-tests to estimate personal road rage tendencies. A three-step program to transform drivers from aggressive to supportive drivers is included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Driving You Crazy
Road Rage is a winner! It will resonate with readers who have been threatened on the road, trapped in a car with an irrational driver, or who want to shake off learned habits of driver aggression. It gives us a peek at the distorted reasoning behind driver aggression, as well as larger implications for our auto-centered culture. It is a fascinating, accessible, and well-documented look at the rapid and sometimes bizarre evolution of our experience on the road.

2-0 out of 5 stars Combination Vehicles
This book combines Combination Vehicles with Doubles and Triples. They are seperate test. The book does not go into the Trailer Hand Valve (trolley valve, johnson bar); Tractor Protection Valve; Trailer Air Supply Control, which are all required reading for the Combination Vehicle test. Beware if you are taking the CDL in the state of Texas the book does not cover Special Requirements for Texas Commercial Motor Vehicles. That is 16 pages of missing information that you need to know.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Spanish Translation of English Truck Terms
I bought this book for my spanish CDL students whose english is limited. I felt it was a good companion to the english CDL study guide. It was helpful for translation of truck part terms that you cannot find in an english/spanish dictionary. I also bought the spanish video that goes with the book and found that useful and informational as well. I would recommend the book and video as a supplement to the english CDL study guide and videos when studying for the CDL permit tests. The only downfall is that if the instructor does not speak english and spanish this may be a problem as the instructor needs to understand both languages to correctly translate the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, includes info needed for CDL exam, and industry.
I purchased this book b/c I am looking to get into the trucking industry. After I received this book, I was pleased. This book is well-layed out and describes all aspects of the trucking industry and CDL requirements. Each chapter is followed by a series of questions and the authors give tips throughout the book for passing CDL exams. Includes all endorsements, and the book was published in 2001, so you know it is not out-dated. Overall, I am satisfied with the contents and hope to get into the industry. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Far superior to High Performance Driving
Police and Pursuit Driving (P&P) is far superior in every way to Bondurant's High Performance Driving (HPD).Whereas over half the content of HPD is anecdotes from Bob's racing days and plugs for Bob's school and sponsors, P&P skips all that.Instead, P&P is written for busypeople -- cops -- who want "just the facts."Unless you areactually going to become a racer -- in which case, the last chapter of HPD,on buying a race car and finding sponsors, may be interesting to you --there is no useful information in HPD that isn't also covered in P&P. The special Bondurant braking techniques, cornering techniques, seatingposition, etc. -- they're all in here.Furthermore, the presentation inP&P is geared toward applying your skills on the street -- where almostall of us spend most of our time driving anyway -- rather than on thetrack. Finally, if you are interested in participating in the "highperformance driving schools" sponsored by local chapters of car clubssuch as the BMW Club or the Porsche Club, then Police and Pursuit Drivingis even more useful, because it goes over optimal techniques for the coneexercises that these clubs do in their entry-level schools, whereas HighPerformance Driving, despite its title, does not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Bondurant on Police and Pursuit Driving
This is probably the most advanced book on the subject of police driving in emergency and pursuit mode.Bob Bondurant and his co author bring together some new ideas on steering and vehicle control. The book has lots of pictures which help to explain the ideas expressed in "Police andPursuit Driving."Well Done. This book should be in every EVOCInstructor's library.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Potential, So-So Result, Needs Better Diagrams
The idea behind this book--that many different aspects of physics are illustrated in your car--is fantastic.Electric circuits, Newton's laws of motion, batteries, pressure/volume, and even silicon chips are discussed, along with many, many more topics.
4-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Math For Me, But Still a Good Informative Book
Barry Parker has written a book that gets down to the nitty gritty of how a car actually works. All the way down to the physics of it.There is actually alot to be learned from his book even if you're not a physics buff. For example, I now understand the difference between a 2 and a 4 stroke engine.I still can't explain the physics behind any of this stuff, but then again, I don't really want to.If you have an interest in understanding cars, or an interest in physics, this book will keep you interested with Barry's down-to-earth writing style. But if you don't like physics or math, it's not a total loss. Those parts are easily skimmed or even skipped entirely.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but could be better
In short, the idea of writing this book was an excellent one. The book's potential is tremendous. However, rating it fairly is a more difficult matter. On the positive side, the writing style is very friendly, engaging and clear; a few of the author's personal experiences are peppered throughout - a big plus. The topics include: driving, most if not all of the various systems in cars, as well as the road-tire interface. It even covers car racing and theories of traffic congestion. A lot of interesting, indeed fascinating, information is presented. On the negative side, however, although some items are discussed clearly and as thoroughly as one might expect in such a book, other items are briefly glossed over while some seem to come to an abrupt end. The physics in each case is discussed to correspondingly varying degrees. Some equations are incorrect due to errors in subscripts and some graphs' axes are mislabeled, i.e., editorial mistakes requiring more careful editing. Some equations are magically presented out of thin air, while the derivations of others are are briefly discussed before presenting them. I would hope that, in the future, a second edition of this book would appear in which the various shortcomings would be corrected and additional material added to even out the physics, the various explanations and include a few formula derivations (or recommend references if the derivations are too involved). In other words, perhaps 50 to 100 additional pages may be appropriate. Should such a second edition of this book appear, I would be among the first to get a copy. As it stands, it is valuable reading for any driver; however, a revised edition, as discussed above, could satisfy the needs of the more scientifically curious as well. I am giving the book as much as four stars mainly because of its concept, its tremendous potential, its excellent writing style and the interesting information that it contains. An appropriate second edition would earn an easy five stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wise and thoughtful gift for an elderly parent
My father has become a danger on the road. It's not something he likes to be reminded of, naturally.Yet he's had some near misses. As important as driving is to a sense of independence, particularly for those getting on in age, it's not realistic to expect an elderly parent to hang up the car keys. 3-0 out of 5 stars Senior Driver's Guidebook: How To Keep Driving Longer . . .
I read the Senior Driver's Guidebook with interest, as one who deals with rush-hour traffic on a daily basis.I appreciated receiving the benefit of the author's years of experience as both a driver's license examiner &working with the Dept. of Transportation. I learned many tips and ideas tomake driving easier and safer as our state's freeways become less safe. The author emphasizes defensive driving throughout the book, and then tellsus how we can accomplish that in various situations that arise. I liked theformat, because I could read a chapter or two and put it down until I hadmore time to digest more information. I also liked the little tests at theend of each chapter.I would recommend this book for anyone who drivestoday's crazy roads and freeways.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Senior Driver's Guidebook
According to his biography, the author is an expert on traffic accident records. He is not qualified to write a driving or drivers manual for senior drivers simply because he has become a senior driver.Of the 108pages, 35 are devoted to the title's subject. The rest of the pages arefiller. The writing is unclear and inane. "Being inattentive to thepossibilities of a collision with a train is a sad way to end a nice quietride in the country."Do tell. The structure of the book leads thereader into mazes and blind alleys. The best part of the book is thebibliography and the five pages of State vehicle department addresses.My$25 could have been much better spent. ... Read more
