5-0 out of 5 stars An important, necessary selection of pioneering articles.
Guy Brousseau articles covered in this book comprise one of the very significant contributions in this second half of the century to mathematics education. It is an important contribution towards the formulation of atheory to explore the 'phenomena that occur during the teaching ofmathematics'. This selection of papers will go a long way to help non-french speaking readers to approach not only Brousseau's work, but alsothe now wide and deep body of contributions of the French school of'didactique des mathmatiques' to mathematics education as awell-established research discipline. The articles included cover some ofthe main concepts that Brousseau has dealt with durig the period 1970-1990.The conceptions of didactical situation, milieu, and different types ofdidactical contracts are shown and a careful reading will help to revealsome of the complex background from which these ideas developed. This is byno means easy reading, but then the subject might be one of the mostintriguing and, simultaneously, underestimated and oversimplified areas ofeducational research. Brousseau's work does not offer easy, run-of-the millrecipes to solve questions of learning mathematics. Instead it givesserious indications and contributions of a way toward meaningful research. This is a remarkable contribution even for those who do not share thephilosophy underlying some of 'didactique des mathmatiques' theories. Theeditors have done good work, the preludes to each chapter constitute bythemselves a learned commented introduction to some of the notions andimportant points in the area. They are a welcome overview to help to putBrouseau's work in perspective. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book
easy to understand, practical strategies, insightful, reminds us that behavior is the way children communicate when they are frustrated or lack other communicative abilities...

5-0 out of 5 stars Real help in addressing behavioral difficulties in autism
There are several books about behavior problems on the market, but this one deals specifically with the types of problems associated with autism. Besides explaining how to lessen these behavioral problems, this book teaches you to understand the root of the behavior which means you can apply your new found knowledge in endless ways. 5-0 out of 5 stars Behavior Analysis
Linda Hodgdon's book, SOLVING BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS IN AUTISM, works for anybody dealing with another human being. You don't have to be a parent, teacher, or someone working with a special-needs person to see the value in Ms. Hodgdon's approach. People act out for a reason.Linda suggests you look at the circumstances before, during, and after a behavior before trying to deal with it.If you understand the person's motivation, concern, and expectations, you can better change, temper, or redirect the behavior.Added to this insight, Linda points out most special needs people's strengths and weaknesses. Then she clearly and concretely describes techniques using visual tools to help them communicate more effectively.Since most special needs people are visual-spacial learners rather than auditory students, Linda shows how to make, use, and facilitate visual tools, so these people can better understand, and thus, behave in society.Ms. Hodgdon's technique takes the use of visual tools beyond labeling, and she explains how to direct people's communication with visuals, so that they can function as normally as possible in the everyday world. When they understand the concept, they can communicate it, but in order to comprehend the idea, they must see it.Thus, if they can see, they can understand, then they can act accordingly. Linda shows this concept with the logo, WHEN I SEE IT...THEN I UNDERSTAND.Bad behavior may not be intentional, but if people don't understand what they hear or what others expect of them, their inappropriate actions may simply be a reaction rather than a controlled response. So logically, if you understand why people behave inappropriately, you can fix the problem not just react to it.SOLVING BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS IN AUTISM helps readers realize reason works better than reaction when dealing with human behavior especially with special needs people. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars "Pop" psychology at its worse...
...Mr. Jensen and his wife have developed a veritable cottage industry replete with workshops, seminars, presentations, publications, certifications -- if you've got the money then they have something to sell you...and all of it is centered around what is termed "brain-based learning"...but what this book presents is little more than 400 pages of scientifically unsubstantiated claims and recommendations...for example, it claims that the color yellow somehow enhances intellectual performance and, hence, classrooms should be painted yellow...however, he doesn't offer a shred of evidence to back that claim up...it's all just ridiculous...how does this stuff ever make it into print?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource!
I found this book to be a great resource for Administrators who need to write Teacher Evaluations. This resource would also be extremely helpful for Graduate Students who are taking Administration courses. The comments are appropriate. The "pats on the back" are explicit with details. This book is most helpful when comments for improvement need to be written. The negative scenerios come with a bank of suggestions for improvement. The CD made my life easier.I am sure that you will keep this book within arm's reach as I have done.

4-0 out of 5 stars love the "love and logic"
I must say the approach to teaching and managing my class is going to be 180 degrees from the norm. No more yelling and no more negative energy.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's Your Choice
Outstanding book. Recommend to all teachers and administrators. Well worth the read, especially with today's millenial generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful...
The approaches discussed in this book were recommended to me by an elementary school teacher who uses them both in her classroom and with her own children. I'll admit, at first I was skeptical as to whether or not it would be effective in a preschool setting, but after implementing these strategies I'm convinced! There are fewer power struggles, even with my most "assertive" children, and I walk away from situations less stressed than ever before. Based on natural consequences and decision making, this is an excellent approach to behavior management that helps you keep control of your classroom while empowering your students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Schools should all be learning organizations
Senge became famous for his book on learning organizations. In this book, he and his co-authors apply those concepts and ideas specifically to educational institutions. While much of their focus is on K12, the ideas and process are applicable to higher education as well. So many management books are really fads with superficial value, but Senge's books are very practical and valuable. This book in particular demonstrates a great deal of passion on the part of the author's for their topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Length appeared overwhelming--but well worth it
Having been given the instructions to select a book of vision for a reading group in a graduate class, I didn't expect to choose one of over 500 pages. The length, however, is indicative of the power this book has for changing minds about schools and the way to structure them for learning.I found myself often reading passages aloud to other educators and anyone who would listen.Instead of stifling my curiosity, the book inspired me to dig deeper on the five disciplines.A great book for creating a vision of education that includes schools where students are learning.I may purchase another one to loan out!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource book for educators
This is an essential book for anyone interested in education. Its comprehensive coverage gives much background, even at the risk of being distracting when you want to follow-up on the leads to so many interesting source-books and links.Though you are told to dip in anywhere, you must read the first section, esp. "The Industrial Age System of Education" by Senge and "A Primer to the Five Disciplines" (Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared Vision, Team Learning and Systems Thinking) (pp. 27-93).Read more
