4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for uneducated teachers with regards to law
With all the horror stories we hear about teachers being fired and sued over decesions they made about punishment and what to teach and how to teach, this book is a gold mine. It provides information on just about any topic a teach may encounter. Not only does it have great information, it is also written with few "legal trade" words. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting activities that stimulate good writing
As a teacher of high-school students with learning disabilities I was very happy to find Ms. Rawlings book.Nothing is more difficult in writing thanthinking of an idea and getting started.I found that my students wouldsimply stare into space when asked to write, desperately trying to think ofsomething to write about. Now I use the story starters as fun, creativeways to get the kids going. For the first time many of them want to writebecause the story starters are so compelling they want to start the storyand see where it takes them.I also enjoy the sensible teaching tips froma seasoned pro in the classroom.Thank you Ms. Rawlings Miller!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book your children will love!
My son LOVES this book! With the new Harry Potter books, my son (a 10-year-old who normally hates to read and write) has taken an interest in trying to write his own books. As a non-writer I did not know where tostart, but Ms. Miller's book is informative and most of all FUN! Shedemystifies writing so that it is enjoyable and understandable.I wouldsuggest anyone with schoolage children try this book so writing will not besuch a scarey thing for their kids. I read it and learned lots -- I wish Ihad it when I was growing up! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A teen's perspective on an almost four star book
"Odd Girl Speaks Out" is a book of short stories by teen and preteen girls about their experiences with relationships between other girls.Opening the beginning of each section is commentary by the editor relating to what the section will be about.
4-0 out of 5 stars Memory Reminders
As we age I think it becomes harder and harder for us to remember our childhoods accurately.I was finishing up this book as I was giving a final exam and one of my students asked me, "Why are you reading that?"I tried to explain to her the research on female aggression that psychologists have been doing.I also tried to explain to her that authors like Simmons are making these research results and the personal "case studies" they apply to more available to the public and accessible to the people who need them (i.e., young girls, parents, and teachers). Both of these reasons should be enough for a person to read this collection of accounts of aggression, but I also feel things like this are important to read specifically because our memories are not accurate and maturity overrides our negative experiences sometimes.Even if you've forgotten what it was like to have no friends or to fear losing the friends you do have, your daughter, student, or client has not.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
I am a Registered Nurse, with 3 college degrees, working on a Masters in Education.I bought this book for my 14 year-old daughter. After we read it together, I will give it to my friend, who is a Professional Counselor for children. She has a Masters in Ed already.I'm not saying that all these degrees I'm speaking of are important or that you need them to order this book.I think anyone with a daughter should order this book.I am only speaking about our education because I want you to know that professionals are also buying & using this book in our profession.Thank you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mapping is new!
I wanted to learn mapping to help me with my career choices as I worked with a resume writer and career coach (http://www.callfranklyspeaking.com). This book really helped me understand the concept and apply not just to a job change, but to my new job and mapping out the possibilities for my department. Easy to learn!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Very visual book, excellant ideas.Hope to use it to help my kids in school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing read!
This book presents visual mapping in both written words and graphic form. The consistency between the two forms makes learning extraordinarily fast. I read it in one sitting and have begun to use the techniques already to facilitate my writing. My one wish was that the publisher had done it in color. Ah, but this would have increased the cost to something I might not want to have spent before seeing it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've read on creating readers....
One and a half years ago, my kindergartener was reading at a 3rd grade level but lacked "comprehension". While he could retell basic plot elements, he appeared to lack any ability to synthesize or think about what he had read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good read!
This book is easy to read and follow.I am studying to teach and this is one of the few books not written by a Dr. so it offers a fresh perspective!

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Home and Classroom Education
Who doesn't like to be read to?This book solidifies the feeling that reading to children builds their vocabulary, their desire to read and more over their ability to read fluently. It's all about modeling.

5-0 out of 5 stars A standard is born
I had the pleasure of being an online graduate student at Florida State University where Dr. Driscoll was teaching. Having Dr. Driscoll as an instructor, using her own book as a textbook for the course, was an invaluable experience for me. Anyone who needs a deeper understanding of cognitive learning theories need not look any further than this book. The logical formatting and presentation, the examples and explanations of theory from a variety of sources, makes this book a true gem, and one I still refer to, years after attending Dr. Driscoll's course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than you think.
Just finishing my masters in secondary education, this is the book I find myself using as a reference most often.Just about everything is here in regards to the psychology of education from the elementry stuff like Behaviorism through a hoard of theorists like Piaget, Asubel, Brunner, etc. etc. etc.The contrast presented at the end of the book between Gagne and the constructivists makes the book feel particularly relevant.5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and Practical
Marcy's book was the text for a course I attended, and it was packed with useful information. Her writing style is clear and organized into meaningful content areas. I found her examples to be practical and they easily conveyed the essence of the context. In general, the book exemplified the principles discussed in the materials by being student-centered. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the learning mind....
I found this book to be very informitive in how the mind works and respect to how people learn. I have improved my personal study habits because after reading this book I realized that I was not using the most effective way of keeping things in my long term memory. This book gives a detailed explanation with real life examples of how to approach situations as a teacher or parent who wants to know the inner tickings of the developing learner. If you are more concerned with toddlers though this book only briefly touches on them. This book deals more with school age children. If I were to try and write a review that this book deserves, I would be writing all night. I know that the description of this book is written above and I believe it to be a really good description of the book. I will agree though that this book answers all of the aspects of teaching, learning and the classroom as well as the many theories and approaches to educational psychology.

1-0 out of 5 stars I didn't receive my book.
I did not receive my book from this seller, and I am still having difficulty getting someone to refund my order. I would not recommend this seller if you want to get something for your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, practical intro to ed'l psych'y for teachers
In a highly readable manner, Jeanne Ormrod introduces educational psychology for K-12 teachers. She incorporates many of the learning principles and teaching practices her text espouses by using colorfullyillustrated and highlighted multiple formats throughout, such as summaries, case studies, classroom applications and examples, emphasis of majorpoints, and learning exercises. The three major sections address learnerdiversity, how students learn, and becoming an effective teacher.Sheoutlines seven themes for effective learning which she addresses in everysection: interaction, information processing, relevance, classroom climate, challenge, expectations, and diversity. The text cites educational researchthroughout (there is an index with 44 pages of references) yet theparagraphs have a readibility and easy flow to them. Ormrod's chaptersconsistently address her goals as an author: focusing on cores principles, relating them to our own behavior, processing them effectively and applyingthem in the classroom. The phrase "interesting textbook," usuallyan oxymoron, in this case is well-deserved praise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Graduate student review of Program Evaluation
This book is used as a text book in my graduate class on evaluation in Instructional Technology. The book is clear, easy to understand, thorough and a good "primer" on evaluation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best evaluation survey text
This text surveys evaluation theory and practice in a manner that is easy to understand and teach. It's appropriate for undergraduate or graduate work in performance evaluation. The authors do an excellent job of reviewing the history and key literature. They also briefly explain popular methodologies and discuss different approaches, such as objective and holistic. The book includes case study material that highlights processes, advantages, drawbacks, and potential problems of evaluation efforts. The authors avoid consulting hype and focus on building the evaluation body of knowledge. An update with Fitzpatrick listed as the first author is now available and also is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Good Ideas
Eighth Edition. From beginning to end, this book is loaded with practical techniques for improving classroom behavior. The heart of the book summarizes the discipline approaches of a range of theorists, from pioneering models like Skinner, Kounin, and Dreikers to more sophisticated approaches including the Canters' Assertive Discipline, Glasser's noncoercive discipline, and Curwin and Mendler's Discipline with Dignity. The range of pedagogies corresponds to the diversity of pedagogies, districts, and students.
3-0 out of 5 stars Look Elsewhere for "How-to's"
Building Classroom Discipline is a practical book for a college classroom;however, for the teacher looking for a "how-to" book, there are other books that are better.BCD is wonderful for learning about different theories or studies on discipline, but it doesn't get to the practical stuff until the end of the book. Therefore, if you are looking for a book full of "how-to's", read something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great For Teachers
This book I believe is excellent for not only beginning teachers but also those teachers who are in a classroom now. It provides an unbiased account of Educational Theorist. The text looks at what each theorist has recommended from his or her own research in managing classroom behaviour. The book provides strategies for teachers to help control and prevent student misbehaviour. The book not only looks at old Theorist such as Dreikus, Kounin, Skinner but new Theorist such as Canter. It is a must for all teachers to read, allowing them to effectively use strategies suggested by the various theorists in their classroom. I have found the suggested strategies helpful in my own Teaching. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I have had many opportunities to learn from Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis over the years.Through books, workshops, videos and even her coming into my classroom for a model lesson she has inspired my students through my instruction.Of course, with all the background, using this toolkit was easy and useful. However, I have since moved to a new school district. This toolkit has offered me an opportunity to help with comprehension instruction here as well.I have found that even teachers who have never even heard of Stephanie Harney or Anne Goudvis are easily able to use these lessons to enhance their student's comprehension, epecially in the area of non-fiction.Each lesson offers an overview, narrative and teaching points. There are examples of the "teacher talk" language to use and what expect of the 'kid talk'. Included are assessment tools and graphic organizers. The source book of short texts, is an extraordinary resource and helps one to find other resources that match the curriculum and ability levels of the students.
