Best book on gifted education
This book is an invaluable resource to both parents and teachers

Among the best books on early education
I have a baby and recently started planning her early education.I systematically searched the internet, Amazon and university library shelves for information.Among the dozens of books that I have read or browsed, this one is clearly among the best (a must-have) for my style of parenting.I don't just listen to "experts" and do what they say, I do my own reasoning and make my own decision.
This is THE book on the subject
I suspect this is mainly used as a textbook for teachers or counselors and the like...but I bouoght it as a parent and I highly recommend this book.Read more

Now They Are Ready for Anything!
I am a Principal at a middle school, and as part of our pre-service program our school provided our new teachers with copies of What Great Teachers Do Differently by Todd Whitaker.Everybody felt MUCH more comfortable with how they will deal with their students, other teachers, and even myself.As most of you remember, it is a very daunting task to step into a classroom for the first time.As a fan of many teaching methods, I commend Dr. Whitaker in his assertion that you must have the best teachers possible in order to reach every student with their individual learning styles.This book motivates and inspires teachers to be the best they can be.I plan on using this book for pre-service programs in the future.

Same as the rest...
This book is pretty much the same as the rest, only more amateurishly done in many ways.The rpint is big, it sort of looks like it was self-printed, and it has little research to back up what it says.It offers idyllic, utopian notions of what teaching "should" be.It doesn't ground itself in the real world, and the only saving grace is that the author admits that many of his ideas are more ideal than realistic.He occasionally uses phrases like "I would be willing to bet...", as if somehow making guesses based on personal preferencescounts as quality educational theory.There's nothing new offered by this book; it's the same issues being rehashed by another author.It's not that the ideas are bad, it's just that there's nothing here that will surprise any teacher with more than a week's worth of experience.

Guided Reading:Good First Teaching for All Children
Great book to help teachers organize their classroom for guided reading groups. Has wonderful ideas to impliment learning centers and management of those centers while teaching guided reading groups. Our school has a copy of this book for each teacher to model their classroom after.

I knew that my guided reading program needed to change, but didn't no exactly how to go about improving it. This book has all the answers!Although I'm on summer break, I can't wait to go back in the fall and get started on my new literacy program, putting into practice all the things I've learned from this book.

Wonderful source for Primary Teacher!
I had this book at close tabs at all times.I really loved the icons they have at the back of the book (these are center icons).I photocopied and laminated them, and used them to rotated the children through their centers daily.I LOVE the list of books for each reading level.A big help when choosing books to read with each reading group. Excellent practical advice for the college teacher
Professor Bean provides the theory behind his recommendations but, as any teacher who has delved into this literature knows, theories about effective teaching aren't in themselves necessarily very helpful.What one needs is practical advice, and this book has it---lots of it.Bean identifies different writing activities for students; shows how to design tasks for active thinking and learning in the classroom; suggests effective ways to make use of small group discussion in the classroom; explains ways to increase active learning in a lecture course; discusses the mechanics of grading papers; and shows how to enhance learning in essay exams.Even for the experienced teacher, there's a good deal of worthwhile material here, and it's cogently presented.A highly recommended book for the professor who wants to increase active learning in the classroom and get more out of a lecture course.

Outstanding
Every middle-grade teacher should own this book!It is such a relief to find a book by an author who clearly knows how to engage students in authentic, "real world" material.Not only is this book enjoyable to read, but it actually shows you how to jump in and make nonfiction reading work for your students--or your children--wherever they may be on the ability spectrum.
A ReflectiveTeacher's Guide
Nonfiction Matters by Stephanie Harvey is a great book that not only gives teachers great ideas on how to teach nonfiction writing, but also on how to learn along with the students by inquiring about real things in life anyone of them might have an interest in. *How* to write papers

An excellent resource for English as a Second Language classrooms or self-study for students learning English

Following Andre, a student from Switzerland spending a year completing his English studies at a private language school, the lessons cover a wide variety of language situations directly relevant to adult ESL students, from disembarking at the airport to getting around the city to hanging out with classmates. A Year In The Life Of An ESL Student is particularly valuable for its definitions of common idioms - English phrases with a specific meaning that is not immediately identifiable to those unfamiliar with the language's nuances, such as "blow someone away" (astonish someone), "into something" (enjoy something), "give someone a ring" (phone someone), and much more. Francis Nails It!
Never before in my 20 years of E.S.L. teaching have I seen a better idioms textbook. A Year in the Life is simple to use, is extremely comprehensive, and helps meet a need for relevant, structured, higher level material dealing with spoken English. There are a variety of exercises and activities that can be utilized/skipped according to needs and tastes, and the extensive definitions and examples make it possible for students to learn correct usage at home. All in all, a great find for students and teachers alike. Bravo Mr. Francis!

All-in-one program!
This book is all you need to teach a child to read using phonics!It is simple, not distracting and really works!Short lessons work best and your child will be so happy with what they accomplish...not to mention how happy YOU will be with what your child accomplishes!Perfect, too, for the older student who might need to "touch-up" on their phonics skills.This program is really wonderful and you honestly don't need anything else to go along with it!!Nonconsumable.

All you need!
Forget the fancy stuff - this is all you need to teach your child (or anyone) to read.We do two lessons a day (or more on the easier lessons), about 20 minutes per day, and my daughter was reading simple sentences by the third week.Talk about motivation!Unlike some programs, this moves quickly enough to keep the child's interest and allows enough diversity of information to give the child real skills that he/she can put to use NOW.Don't waste your money on games and such--just Alpha-Phonics and pen and some paper will make your child a reader!

I love it, but my little girl does not.

With a sometimes harsh style sometimes subjective, Mr. Jensen provides us with a leading path to make a coherent relation between the brain an it's development and the education in arts. Not very detailed with the ideas and paradigms but effective to motivate our curiosity in the field. Critical advice for all
In our often complicated and frenetic age, this wonderful little book should be read, and internalized, by all faculty and administrators in higher education, who are under a lot of pressure from many sectors.The most commonly heard complaint is, "I don't have time for that...."With years of good and varied experience in higher education and sage insights, Douglas Reimondo Robinson offers advice and practical suggestions for addressing this complaint, for changing one's way of living, for improving teaching and learning and one's own satisfaction with work activities and results.The prose is well writtena and easily readable; and there is clear and evident good humor and a strong sense of concern expressed for people as individuals.
Exceptionally useful for any college instructor/professor
It is no exaggeration to say that the author of this book changed my life.I teach at UNLV, one of three universities at which Doug Robertson established a faculty development center.Before Doug's arrival, I considered myself a fairly good teacher and had won a few teaching awards.In fact, however, I was incredibly ignorant of the principles of effective teaching.During Doug's three years at UNLV, I attended nearly every workshop he offered to faculty on various aspects of teaching and learning.These workshops opened my eyes to the existence of whole universes of knowledge about teaching and learning, and started me on a path of studying and practicing the principles of effective college teaching.

not very good, but required for my class
Like all the other textbooks I have been required to purchase for my graduate classes, this one is high in price and low in content. Do not purchase this textbook unless you are absolutely required to do so. A good book on statistics and a good up-to-date style manual including A.P.A citations would be much better. This textbook is a crutch for a bad teacher. It contains very little information that a teacher or researcher could reference after the course is over. This book sells for about $120 new. I bought it for $70 used. I will be lucky to re-sell it for $25. The circle of life is complete.

Statistics a Pre-Requisite
As a graduate student with no formal training in statistics, the authors jump head-long into discussions of educational statistics beyond the pervue of the course for which this book was intended. Some good descriptions, but other texts are more appropriate.

Errors abound
I was very disappointed with this textbook. The opening chapter is misleading as it only presents the quantitative view of research (even though the book does include a later chapter on ethnography). And too many errors! The statistics sections are unreliable and not useful to students; the appendix, in particular, contains errors and misleading information. Read more

Practical ideas for facilitators
I have worked with adult learners for more than fifteen years and have always tried to incorporate whole-brained, participative learning.This book provided some excellent theoretical background as well as a lot of new instantly usable ideas.I wasn't even all the way through before I applied a couple of the techniques and got an excellent response from my client.

excellent training tool
I was getting ready to prepare a training program for 44 persons when I read this book.Immediately! after I used the guidelines to prepare my session.Preparation was fast and easy -and fun! I really couldn't believe that it was that easy to apply and it has been one of my best sessions to date. I refer to it when I need a refresher or a new perspective. I definately reccomend this book for trainers who need to keep their material fresh and interesting (esp. in-house trainers).

Accelerated Learning Handbook
Finally, teachers and administrators have a useful tool to recharge their classrooms/schools. We have become so test oriented that many times we forget that the process of learning comes from the doing. The statement comes to mind that we utter with new approaches," When do I have the time to get it all in?". That is where the problem lies! We are so pressured with these new demands that we loose sight of what is important, the process. This book will give us a clearer picture of how we can recharge our teaching and can provide the key so we can use the ideas to change the way we teach or approach the students' learning who are in our care. ... Looking for Help with Assessment
This book is an excellent resource for someone trying to understand how good assessment works.It is very easy to understand, provides lots of examples and doesn't try to confuse the reader by using excessive education jargon.A very good buy.

Great for beginners
If your college is just beginning institutional assessment, then this is the book for you. It has several talking points that will allow faculty and the administration to join together in the task. Overall, I enjoyed it.

This is a great introduction to the assessment process with chapters specifically for departments and general education.The appendices include sample forms and processes for all types of assessment. A great practical resource for anyone responsible for creating an institutional or departmental assessment program.
