Oxford-River English-Thai Dictionary plugs the gaps
At last an excellent and truly comprehensive English Thai dictionary.Arguably its best feature is the wealth of common expressions it includes under most listed words, expressions that frequently have no literal construction or translation but are essential to easy and natural conversation.The alphebetically positioned special explanation panels - eg. forms of address in letter writing, the use numerals etc. -are a very worthwhile inclusion as well.One suggestion for the next edition would be a phonetic rendition of theprimary Thai translation of the listed English word - given the implied vowels that feature in many Thai words this improvement would be warmly welcomed and at least for this reader would immediately propel his rating from four to five stars.

Very useful!
An amazing piece of work! It is probably the only one of its kind in the market. It is particularly good for Thai speakers, but it can also help non-native learners trying to learn Thai. Although it is just English-Thai (with no Thai-English section), as long as you can manage to read the Thai (no transliterations) you can get a lot from it. Each entry has many examples of both literal-like (real, but close to the English in their form) and (more interestingly) "functional" Thai equivalents to the English. And these examples seem to be quite real and natural (linguistically "trustable" Thai friends report). Other Thai dictionaries often present Thai sentences that are so improvable... It has been cleverly made to include many multi-purpose sentences in most entries; so in entries like, say, "do" you find very useful Thai equivalents to "Do something to someone", "Is there anything I can do to help?", "Have nothing to do", "What is that/he doing here?", "What am I going to do?" and so on. ... I've seen better
The tenth edition is not very well organized. Overall, a very boring book.

Okay, but other books are out there.
Like I said in a precious review, I like National University, but they could have chosen a different book.I am Caucasian, white, Christian, heterosexual, male, with blonde hair and blue eyes, and let me tell you, this book will make it seem that the whit people in this country are racist bigots.And that we are trying to indoctrinate every single child that comes to America while keeping all the other people in lower classes.That is how I felt. I'm sorry, but 6+1 equals 7. Just kidding- I understand why she called her book that. This is the best writing book I have come across for primary grades. Easy to use lesson plans, examples of student work, and book title suggestions all make this the perfect writing resource. One of two great books for stressed out parents
As parents who have seen many of our friends completely lose perspective as their kids apply to college, my wife and decided that we would not go down that road when our time came. Forget all the books that imply they will get your child into a "brand name" school. It's about discovering together a place where they can grow, and strenghtening your relationshipas you launch them toward their future. In the name of sanity, I recommend this book (and also a great one our own pediatrician recommended, "Getting In Without Freaking Out.") Stop hovering -- start helping your kids by not imposing your agenda.

Practical & Informative
The title of this book pretty much spells it out: Dr. Sousa explains how brains learn.Considering the subject, the text is very readable--enough to recommend this book to anyone who wants an understanding of how we are able to retain information.It covers the entire gamut, from the basics of biology to the subtler aspects of the active mind.
Educator-friendly
This book is an excellent resource for educators.It is easily adapted to classroom use no matter what level is being taught.Great insights to hemisphere preference, transfer, critical thinking, teaching strategies.Even the biology and physiology is palatable.This book would lend itself well as a resource for inservicing teachers with its many practioner's corner activities.I recently read Jensen's Teaching With the Brain in Mind and, while I found that book to be a good one, this book if FAR more useful.Every teacher will find easily adapted activities to put to immediate use.Highly recommended.

Every bit as good as Pimsleur German I

I took two years of German in high school, which was some decades ago, and after a ski trip to Austria I decided to brush up on my German. I've bought numerous books, dvds, tapes, etc. and for learning conversational German this has been far and away the best. It's pricey, no doubt, but it's very, very well done and very user friendly. I had a professor in college who said we learn the most in an area of "just manageable difficulty". In other words, stretched and challenged but not made to despair. This is the arena the Pimsleur cd/tapes work in.

Comprehensive grammar book.Great sections on APA and MLA format writing.

The best writing reference I've found for the SAT Writing Section
I'm an SAT tutor, and I haven't been thrilled with many of the grammar/usage/writing SAT books on the market.They usually do a decent job on a few topics but not all topics.I'm getting this book for every one of my students (and my own son) because it will not only help them with the SAT writing section but it serves as the best ongoing reference for their use in school.I haven't tried the CD-ROM yet (sold separately) but it has over 1000 practice exercises.

Comprehensive, better than the Bedford Handbook
The college where I teach English composition used Rules for Writers as the Handbook for three or four years. It now uses the Bedford Handbook. I found Rules for Writers to be very full and useful for every aspect of teaching, not only grammar and punctuation, but for composition and research writing as well. It tends to have fairly exhaustive explanations of most points of grammar. It has an especially good section on ESOL problems.All in all, it is a practical useful book that I keep on my writing desk for my own use, even though it is no longer used in our classes.

Longmann Course for TOEFL
An excellent book to pass TOEFL. Use the CD and pay attention to all the exercises and you will not have any problem in taking real TOEFL test.

don't buy it
It's a waste of money and time. You can only use the reading section of the book.When you get the book , for example, for listening part you just have questions ,but you don't have the cd for the conversations. To use the other sections you need another audio series which are NOT in the market. Also the audio series you need is NOT mentioned buy the publisher. They give a cd with the book but it doesn't match with the book, it's totally different. I tied to contact with the publisher but they didn't answer my e-mail, they don't seem responsible. As a result, if you don't want to waste your money don't buy this book.

Excellent book for new arrivals
I purchased this book for a new Mexican friend, who recently moved to the U.S. for two years and speaks practically no English, while I know a smattering of Spanish. We've found it to be invaluable in helping us communicate. When it's obvious that she isn't understanding me, I can turn to the appropriate page--the kitchen, for example--and point to the picture, and she can do the same. Then we work on her pronunciation of the English word. I will probably purchase another one for myself to help me strengthen my Spanish skills. I would also consider the other language titles to correspond with those my sons are studying in school. The format is user-friendly, the color illustrations are happy, and the categories of words are vast and extremely practical--especially helpful to someone struggling to get by in a new country. My friend showed the book to her ESL teacher and was very proud when the instructor recommended the book to the rest of the class!

Great picture dictionary
What makes this dictionary so great is that it is not in alphabetical order and it is based on themes.For example, there is a classroom theme on a page and all of the words that have to do with what is in a classroom.Also, I like the fact that their are numbers next to the object and then all of the words in Spanish and English are at the bottom half of the page.This allows you to cover up all of the words and quiz yourself.

A MUST
If I were to be deprived of all the trading books in my collection but one, that would beThe Encyclopedia. Unlike other literature on the patterns, in this book you will not find clauses like "most of the time", "usually", "seldom". All the information as it'srelated to the pattern trading is thoroughly backtested.
Dictionary for good
This book is just like a dictionary that you can always turn to whenever you have unfamiliar words in the stock markets. It's a good company that you can keep by you side and frequently flip to pages of charts which you are foreign to.

Out of date!
The book is very useful & accurate for citing books and other print articles, but has no information on citing web pages, emails, or other electronic texts. It is based on the 1995 4th edition of MLA, while MLA is up to the 6th edition (2003)

This book is written in a reader-friendly format. It provides many useful strategies which are easily adapted to individual classrooms. The authors reference specific books which lend themselves to cited strategies. ( Some books will prove hard to come by as they are out of print, however.) BEST RESOURCE FOR GED SUCCESS!!!
I am a vocational counselor helping adults return to school to learn a new career. Most have been out of school for 10-30 years. This tool helps them recover years of ability lost to non-use, but most especially to score much higher on their entrance exams to the colleges, which greatly reduce the number of remedial classes they have to take to bring their skills up enough to enter a degree program. In addition, those that dropped out of High School have been able to get their GED within as little as a week, or the time it takes to get scheduled into the local testing center (usually at your local Community College). It has been the single most important resource for nearly every student I have, and has proven its worth time and time again. You cannot lose with this one!

You need this book
This book is a must-have for anyone writing a college level or above paper.I've found that it's better used as a reference, not as the kind type of book you sit down and read.One warning, it is a manual, so it's pretty dry - dry, but necessary.

This book is the Bible for Historians!
I was instructed by several of my past professors that this book would be the guiding light in regards to submitting & creating scholarly materials in my academic writing matriculation.They were right, this book regardless of its many editions has been in my possession for the last 6-7 years.Academians of all concentrations when it comes down to the publishing of Termpapers, Thesis, or Dissertations, you really cannot go wrong with this Chicago-style format.This book made assessing materials, writing papers, citations, proper documentation, and even grading essay papers as a college instructor an enjoyable experience.However, as a undergraduate and graduate student I was introduced to this bible.Now I am entertaining the idea of future editing. If you want to learn Spanish this is the book
The tapes and book are fantastic.I listen to them in the car over and over again.I think I am actually 'getting' to know Spanish.A must to buy--I spend about 1-2 hours a week--so I don't spend 10 minutes a day--sometimes 30 minutes and then 2-3 days later 15-20--it works though.

What a great product
I have tried other spanish learning tapes.I have also attended Spanish classes with a regular Spanish instructor that teaches in high schoool (Spanish 1 - 4 ).I didn't learn Spanish until I obtained the book and tapes.Because I travel so much in my job I have a great opprotunity to be able to listen to the tapes. The book - tape combination is awesome and now I feel confident. What I have learned is sticking with me and I now feel like I can communicate in Spanish.The sticky labels that come with the book are also great.It's a package well put together.I am mid way through tape two ( two of six ) and am surprised at how much I can already say and understand. What an easy way to learn....
