5-0 out of 5 stars I've never read a more interactive book!
I have read a lot of books recently to increase my work knowledge, and I have to say that this book was the easiest and most fun to read. The writers have done an excellent job getting the reader involved, which increases the amount of information one is able to remember. This book is a real pionner in how to write educative books.Oh, yea, and the content was outstanding!

5-0 out of 5 stars Telling Aint Training
Great book!! Any body in the training field should get a copy. Herald Stolovitch and Erica Keeps keep the reader involved throughout the entire book with constant examples and activities that are very interesting and fun. I am in the US military and training is constant in my job. Techniques are drawn out and easy to understand, making it easy for anybody to comprehend and transfer to their own training. The use of the five step training model really sets up how a training session should be held. I will use this book over and over again in the development of my professional training career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gets to the Heart of Training
Stolovitch gets to the heart of training--changing the behavior of the trainees. Whether you are giving a short speech or conducting a three day training session, Stolovitch shows how simply dumping facts (what everybody does) is never effective. This message can not be said enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference On Current Teaching Challenges
This was a text book for my now completed first education class, "The Diverse Classroom". We did not have to read the entire book, just Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 12, so I base my review on those chapers. This book is rich in detail on the challenges faced in contemporary classrooms. It is well written, and has very complete and thorough references. In addition to raising awareness of key issues, it provides many practical suggestions for application.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Textbook
My only complaint about it was that the cover is warped. I bought a new book, had it delivered next-day, and it won't close properly.
1-0 out of 5 stars STINKS!!!!
This is one of the worst stats text books I have ever seen.It is very hard for someone with a logical mathematical background to understand. Most statistical problems are addressed in text versus examples.I would never suggest this book to anyone!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars not restricted to just educational context
Much of the book's material is not restricted to educational research. It is generally applicable to anyone who wants to perform experimental studies in the social sciences. Where you need to deal with human subjects. Granted, in the book, these subjects are often primary school kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Poverty" Misunderstood.
Let me start off by mentioning all the positive elements of this work (of which there are not many). In the beginning, the author shares accurate Census figures about poverty along with insight that it is a relative condition which applies to all races and creeds. She also recommends that educators should teach and strengthen rather than praise and condemn. From here, however, the work slips into the abyss. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Start
I work in a large middle school which hit the 50% level of students in poverty a few years ago. The majority of our poverty students are white, while the number of African-American students is less than 5%.The percent of Hispanic students in poverty in our school/community is growing.Ruby Payne's description of students and families in poverty fits our school to a large degree. Our entire corporation has been exposed to her materials, we've had Ruby as a guest presenter and our entire middle school staff has studied her book. We continue to incorporate much of what her materials recommend. We are having good success with this endeavor, and like anything in education, it is a work in progress.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any...
This is a must read for all teachers, pastors, doctors, lawyers, who deal with various social levels and just about anyone else who feels they can't understand why poor people are poor and stay that way generation after generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical & Informative
The title of this book pretty much spells it out: Dr. Sousa explains how brains learn.Considering the subject, the text is very readable--enough to recommend this book to anyone who wants an understanding of how we are able to retain information. It covers the entire gamut, from the basics of biology to the subtler aspects of the active mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Educator-friendly
This book is an excellent resource for educators. It is easily adapted to classroom use no matter what level is being taught.Great insights to hemisphere preference, transfer, critical thinking, teaching strategies.Even the biology and physiology is palatable. This book would lend itself well as a resource for inservicing teachers with its many practioner's corner activities.I recently read Jensen's Teaching With the Brain in Mind and, while I found that book to be a good one, this book if FAR more useful.Every teacher will find easily adapted activities to put to immediate use.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
A book designed to be used. It offers both theory and practice. There are fifty plus pages of practical suggestions: including "Testing Whether Information Is in Long-Term Storage," and "Using the Primacy-Regency Effect in the Classroom." It also contains a glossary, an eleven page bibliography (with five internet site references), and a three page index. A well balanced 305 page classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Introduction to the Field
Contrary to some of the other reviews on this page, I found the book to be a helpful and very readable itroduction to the field of educational psychology. No, it is not a definitive and cutting edge expert treatise, but that is not its purpose. It is introducing first year students to the major theories and ideas that have historically shaped educational psychology, and it does so very concisely and thoroughly.Just like an Introduction to Christian History text is not going to delve into the finer points of Crossan's theories about Jesus' death, or a first year Calculus text is not going to stress the use of set theory and formal proofs, so this book serves its purpose best by giving a broad, yet thorough introduction to a very interestig field without confusing students with unecessary details. If you are looking to dive into educational psychology and need a helpful introduction to help guide you, this is a great place to start.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nonplussed by criticisms.
It is notable that the critics of this title have failed to indicate a text that they consider superior. Woolfolk's text is so broad in its scope that the accusation of bias is difficult to sustain. In any case, would be educators would willingly accept recommendations on more up-to-date texts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Badly dated - be afraid when educators defend this book.
Woolfolk's book reflects educational psychology ca. 1975. She cynically - and selectively - cites references that are much more recent to give this the gloss of being current, but don't be taken in.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This text is an awesome summary of 'state of the art' teaching models that improve student achievement. The scenarios provide a glimpse into what each model would look like in the classroom. The authors have also provided an extensive rationale and research base for each model. Joyce is definately an author that informed educators should pay attention to.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Teaching With the Brain in Mind
I'm rating this book a 3 based upon my need for the information.I was looking for a more condensed version of information in order to quickly gleen and gather information for a workshop. However, the book includes good information, especially for newer teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching With The Brain In Mind
Fabulous book!I am a teacher and am recommending it to every teacher I know.I think it's a great book for every parent to read! It would be wonderful if "those government people" who make the many many many standards would read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed review, but has some useful info
I had an interest in the brain and learning and bought a couple of books, including this one.It sat on my shelf until last week due to time required elsewhere--or so I told myself. The principal at my school engaged me in a conversation on the topic as she is currently reading the book.(It was nice to find someone who shares this interest, as most others get that "glazed" look when I bring the subject up.)Well, I was motivated to begin the book and went right home to read it.Now, I am a skeptic at heart and need to "see things for myself"; I do not buy into things hook, line, and sinker.I found the writing style of this author to be a little lacking and I have several spots where I jotted down notes in the margins when I really disagreed with some things. So, I certainly would not treat this book as the Bible on the brain related to learning. However, I did get many good ideas to try out in the classroom and I am truly looking forward to getting back to school to implement them. If just two or three of these ideas stand the test of time and serve to improve my teaching, the book will have been worth its price and the time invested in reading it. The author does recommend certain "atmosphere" guidelines so, I suppose, that is touchy-feely; however, most of these ideas make sense.A child will not perform to potential when he/she perceives threat, whether it be fear of risk-taking/being wrong, fear of losing the esteem of peers or being mocked, etc.Feeling threatened, to whatever degree, creates stress; stress does not promote optimal learning.I also found that this book affirmed some of my current practices such as getting children up and moving frequently.I will now be sure to do this even more often; it is easy to do and takes little time.Music will definitely be used more wisely in my classroom in addition to movement.I have begun reading How the Brain Learns by Sousa now and I ordered two more "brain" books.I am almost done with Sousa's book and I like it even more than this one. While few people (even colleagues) share this interest with me, those reading this review most likely do.With that in mind, I do recommend this book as it has lots of useful info and ideas but would recommend How the Brain Learns even more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A standard is born
I had the pleasure of being an online graduate student at Florida State University where Dr. Driscoll was teaching. Having Dr. Driscoll as an instructor, using her own book as a textbook for the course, was an invaluable experience for me. Anyone who needs a deeper understanding of cognitive learning theories need not look any further than this book. The logical formatting and presentation, the examples and explanations of theory from a variety of sources, makes this book a true gem, and one I still refer to, years after attending Dr. Driscoll's course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than you think.
Just finishing my masters in secondary education, this is the book I find myself using as a reference most often.Just about everything is here in regards to the psychology of education from the elementry stuff like Behaviorism through a hoard of theorists like Piaget, Asubel, Brunner, etc. etc. etc.The contrast presented at the end of the book between Gagne and the constructivists makes the book feel particularly relevant.5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and Practical
Marcy's book was the text for a course I attended, and it was packed with useful information. Her writing style is clear and organized into meaningful content areas. I found her examples to be practical and they easily conveyed the essence of the context. In general, the book exemplified the principles discussed in the materials by being student-centered. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the learning mind....
I found this book to be very informitive in how the mind works and respect to how people learn. I have improved my personal study habits because after reading this book I realized that I was not using the most effective way of keeping things in my long term memory. This book gives a detailed explanation with real life examples of how to approach situations as a teacher or parent who wants to know the inner tickings of the developing learner. If you are more concerned with toddlers though this book only briefly touches on them. This book deals more with school age children. If I were to try and write a review that this book deserves, I would be writing all night. I know that the description of this book is written above and I believe it to be a really good description of the book. I will agree though that this book answers all of the aspects of teaching, learning and the classroom as well as the many theories and approaches to educational psychology.

1-0 out of 5 stars I didn't receive my book.
I did not receive my book from this seller, and I am still having difficulty getting someone to refund my order. I would not recommend this seller if you want to get something for your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, practical intro to ed'l psych'y for teachers
In a highly readable manner, Jeanne Ormrod introduces educational psychology for K-12 teachers. She incorporates many of the learning principles and teaching practices her text espouses by using colorfullyillustrated and highlighted multiple formats throughout, such as summaries, case studies, classroom applications and examples, emphasis of majorpoints, and learning exercises. The three major sections address learnerdiversity, how students learn, and becoming an effective teacher.Sheoutlines seven themes for effective learning which she addresses in everysection: interaction, information processing, relevance, classroom climate, challenge, expectations, and diversity. The text cites educational researchthroughout (there is an index with 44 pages of references) yet theparagraphs have a readibility and easy flow to them. Ormrod's chaptersconsistently address her goals as an author: focusing on cores principles, relating them to our own behavior, processing them effectively and applyingthem in the classroom. The phrase "interesting textbook," usuallyan oxymoron, in this case is well-deserved praise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mapping is new!
I wanted to learn mapping to help me with my career choices as I worked with a resume writer and career coach (http://www.callfranklyspeaking.com). This book really helped me understand the concept and apply not just to a job change, but to my new job and mapping out the possibilities for my department. Easy to learn!
