5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
As a rookie campaign manager for a tax levy that was already defeated once, I needed to learn and learn fast. That's what this book helped me do. I've practically worn out some sections refering back to them time and time again. We are just entering the actual campaign, but I feel very confident with my campaign plan, and I am ready.
5-0 out of 5 stars GET This Book
This book is absolutely fabulous. If you are even thinking about running for office (at any level) or working on an issue-based like a school bond, GET this book. It's written in clear language for those of us who are not political nerds. It also has tons of good examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catherine Shaw's Campaign Manger: A Blueprint for Success
I recently finished working on a local State Senate race where we used Shaw's book as a manual for each course of action in our campaign. I was very impressed with the book's clear direction and insightful reasoning. We won our race because each step we took made sense and Shaw's book influenced our decision making process in every way. I highly recommend that anyone who thinks about running or participating in a local election reads and uses Shaw's book. We would not have been so successful without it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Different and Entertaining
Entertaining book following the Republican Primaries of 1996.You learn a lot about the candidates that you may have never known, and even more so about the candidates you never even knew. There is a lot of focus on Morey Taylor. For some reason, I never remembered him, but liked a lot about him after reading this book.Good entertaining read.Primarily for political junkies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
In Losers, Michael Lewis gives the reader a fun ride on the campaign planes and busses of the also ran candidates in 1996.
4-0 out of 5 stars Morry Taylor for President!!
This is a pretty typical Michael Lewis read: exceptionally descriptive, hilarious and insightful. He does great work seeing the various campaigns for what they are; and is able to stay objective throughout the experience, though obviously he forms a special connection to Morry Taylor.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An election official's view of Rubin's work
This is a supremely readable, very important book.Rubin's unaffected, engaging "gee whiz" attitude is the perfect antidote to the false pride of America's typical election officials and the obscurantism of the E-voting industry.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important work on the insecurity of e-voting systems
In an important new book Brave New Ballot: The Battle to Safeguard Democracy in the Age of Electronic Voting, Avi Rubin writes `too often in American life, when it comes to divisive issues, the facts can be less important than the weight of public opinion'.That basically sums up Rubin's story in this fascinating story of his frustrations in dealing with government and corporate officials in his quest to show that e-voting was not as secure as it was originally made out to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars When science meets democracy
This is a book about science overcoming PR in one of the most important facets of our democracy: voting. In another sense, this book is a narrative of how a scientist's discoveries can lead to new revelations about an emerging technology, and the problems that arise when strong commercial and often political interests are at odds with that discovery.Avi takes you on the trip with him through the often overwhelming events of a major national debate that is even to this day playing out before us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like Sitting in the Oval Office
This is Bill Sammon's third book on the Presidency of George W. Bush. The extraordinary access given to Mr. Sammon is evident in the detail and atmosphere that is consistent throughout this whole series. I am assuming (Always a dangerous thing!) that this access has been provided because the author actually tries to be as objective as possible, a trait sorely missing in the media of today. As this review is written, we are reacting to the discovery of the latest Islamic terror plot to kill thousands of passengers in jumbo jets over the Atlantic. Watching the press and politicians try to spin the story, along with the constant parade of altered 'news' photos from Lebanon, it is refreshing, and critically important, to know that somebody in the media actually sticks to the facts instead of injecting his political and personal prejudices into every word produced.
3-0 out of 5 stars Journalistic month-in-review time capsule summary of the Bush-Kerry campaign (+2005 events). See Fred Barnes book info below.
The "real John Kerry walked onto the stage in Coral Gables, Florida, and Americans saw not a cartoon, but a flesh-and-blood person with poise and grace and serious arguments about important issues. The man appeared downright reasonable and at times even likeable." But that man was bested, in the end, by another on election day in November. This is the story of this book---rather straight foward journalistic details of what occured during the presidential campaign of 2004 that enabled the latter to triumph so, rather than with analysis of how events played out. The author, a journalist with the Washington Times, thus rehashes the following in succession: The Abu Ghraib whirlwind, Kerry's courting of John McCain as his VP running mate, the Democratic Party's convention, the Swift Boat Veterans appearance on the political stage, Zell Miller and the Republican Party's national convention, the CBS News fake documents fiasco, the presidential debates and, finally, the election itself. But the book doesn't not stop here (at page 208), but continues to describe a George Bush trip to Chile, Bush's inauguration, Iraq's successful first real election, the crisis in Lebanon set off by the assassination of that country's prime minister, Pope John Paul II's funeral, the nomination of John Roberts to the US Supreme Court, hurricane Katrina, William Rehnquist's death & the nomination of Samuel Alito (after the Harriot Miers failed candidacy). The notion of strategic "Strategery," while it is a great title, doesn't really characterize this (neverthless well-written engaging) book as it has been written, however. The subtitle of this book ("How Bush is defeating terrorists, outwitting Democrats, & confounding the mainstream media") is even less apropo since this work is not an argument per se. Imagine a newspaper's "week in review" section X 60, 70 or something. That's what this book resembles and, as such, is a time capsule of sorts which will be ever more useful as the years progress. If, however, you want to read the book that really makes an argument for George Bush that covers the same period as Mr. Sammon's does you'd be better off picking up a copy of "Rebel-in-Chief" by Fred Barnes. Or read both in tandem if such is your inclination. (06Jul) Cheers!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting conclusions to news articles I had already read.
Sammon's treatment of the everyday press from an insider's perspective was interesting. After reading Strategery I will never listen to a presidential press conference the same way. I will be locked and cocked for the smart sounding questions from the major media outlets that assume they know the outcome of everything before it happens.

5-0 out of 5 stars A political science classic
This is one of the best and most valuable political science texts I have ever read - and, as a political science major, self-confessed politics junkie and activist, I've read most of them. Gary Jacobson's research is unmatched and his findings are essential to anyone who wants to get involved in Congressional campaigns. His assessment of the role of money in such campaigns is astounding and discomforting. While the going gets dry at times, overall the book is a good read with very practical applications today.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible on Congressional Elections
Anyone involved in running for a congressional seat, working on a congressional election or just interested in national politics will find this book enormously interesting. It's short. It's down to earth. It's up-to-date.And, it's one of the best on the subject.Professor Jacobson's book features pertinent analysis of national survey data plugged into long-term electoral trends. It covers all you need to know about how to make a run for Congress, calculating your odds and the chances of knocking off an incumbent. It is a unique blend of academic effort and practicality that is continually useful. It is the very best on what to expect in congressional elections for the U.S. House and Senate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Here's the evidence that it was
How can a democratic country allow voting machines that cannot be verified? How can it let interested parties run elections? How can the media stand by while people are not allowed to vote? The answer is that a democratic country can't do this and remain democratic.
1-0 out of 5 stars are you kidding me ?
this is too funny Ohio exit polling must have been much like Illinois?
5-0 out of 5 stars Where's your evidence? Here!
This is the one. If you've had a hunch that the 2004 election was stolen, but have been stymied in arguing the case by too much conjecture, too little hard evidence, and vulnerability to people who think you're a paranoid, tin-foil hat, conspiracy theorist, this book is going to make your life easier. Not a lot easier, though, because 1) people want to believe that America is innately good; and 2) the the cheating is so widespread that it boggles the mind and will. But Freeman and Bleifuss provide the essential facts and key questions for attacking the problem step-by-step. The book is very clearly organized with sections about voter disenfranchisement (especially African-American), corruptible voting machines, legal and illegal suppression of votes, the particular cases of Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004, and biased polls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Academic insights meet practical application
Ted Brader's "Campaigning for Hearts and Minds: How Emotional Appeals in Political Ads Work" drives yet another nail into the coffin of academic wisdom that voters are either rational decision-makers or complacent habit-following creatures by providing compelling evidence for the role of emotions in political campaigns.Building off of George Marcus, Russell Neuman and Michael MacKuens' model of "Affective Intelligence", Ted Brader applies the rarely employed experimental method to "everyday people" during a Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign to explicate the process and outcome of their viewing televised political advertisements of differing emotional content and tone.Brader then carries out a content analysis of 1,565 political advertisements from the 2004 election to provide insights as to how the emotions of enthusiasm and fear are used to influence potential voters. His often counter-intuitive experimental findings on how subtle visual and audio cues affect voters' emotions, especially those of informed and interested voters, makes this book required reading for those interested in the "real world" of politics and campaigning. His content analysis findings reinforce his experimental findings by illustrating how political advertisements are used in political campaigns across the United States. In sum, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning how emotions influence politics by substantially advancing our understanding of how emotions drive our political thoughts, decisions, and actions. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Unfair
I think that this was an unfair attack on John Kerry. He would have been a better President than other people because he has actually scene action instead of asking his daddy to get him into the Guard and then go A.W.A.L from it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly researched, poorly written hack piece
It's rather amazing how many five star "reviewers" have so much of the same bad information to impart about John Kerry, but so little to say about the substance of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Swift Boat Veterans
This book is a MUST READ. Whether you call yourself liberal, or conservative, I don't care. If you think of yourself as one who demands integrity in public servants at all levels of service, then you owe it to yourself to understand the kind of man That John Kerry really is, how frighteningly close he came to winning that election and how vigilant we voter's MUST be. The forthright accounts in this book- from numerous individuals expose John Kerry as entirely despicable and self serving.

3-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking conspiracy theory
35 years after the publication of this book, the claims in it have become charicaturistic of the ramblings of so-called "conspiracy nuts."None Dare Call it Conspiracy was one of the first books -- certainly the first book with wide readership -- to claim that the most powerful nations of the world, and their wealth, are controlled by a handful of international bankers, super-rich, and government insiders.

Gore did in fact win the popular vote, the same popular vote that Bush won over Kerry in 2004 which some democrats said didn't mean anything. But Bush won the electoral college vote and won over 32 states to Gore. Al Gore couldn't even carry his own state.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worth re-reading again and again!
A lot of times when I am waiting for my new batch of books to come in, I'll re-read an old one. I did just that with At Any Cost and it made my blood boil all over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A history of the House, its actions, and how past decisions differ from modern times
The House of Representatives is supposed to be closest to the desires of ordinary citizens - but in reality it's lost its way and in recent years are more fixed on power plays than consumer representation: that's the message of FIGHT CLUB POLITICS: HOW PARTISANSHIP IS POISONING THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Here's an important survey for any who would understand modern politics: it provides a history of the House, its actions, and how past decisions differ from modern times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Explains Why the House is so Extreme
The creation of politically safe, more ideologically tilted congressional seats through redistricting has cemented the Republican hold on power and made the House of Representatives unrepresentative - so charges Eilperin in "Fight Club Politics."Republicans take about two-thirds of committee seats, even though they had only 52.9% of the vote in '94.Another "innovation" was having leadership PACs dole out money, instead of challengers, junior lawmakers, and possibly more independent lawmakers.
5-0 out of 5 stars insightful and enjoyable
This book is a pleasure to read, offering insightful and amusing anecdotes and quotes gathered personally by the author. For veterans of Capitol Hill, Fight Club offers fresh analysis of what ails Congress. For those less familiar with the inner workings of Congress, this book is a fun and educational read that helps explain why the two parties are unable to find common solutions to some of the country's most pressing issues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the Psychology of Authoritarian Conservatism
Die-hard right wing authoritarian conservatives. We all know at least a few - those sworn idealogues that only get their information from Fox News, can't get enough of conservative talk radio, and blame America's failures and short-comings on minorities, immigrants, gays, liberals, the French and their mythical favorite - the so-called welfare state. They corner the market on Jesus, morality and patriotism, slander anyone that doesn't walk in lockstep with their extremist agenda, and when things aren't going their way, they blame the mythical "liberal media" and disregard whistleblowers as disloyal opportunists.
