4-0 out of 5 stars Hands-On Writing Tools for Young Writers
I enjoyed this book.It gave some very practical advice on creating a workshop environment for writing in the Intermediate grades.I have used the ideas (modified) with younger writers and they are equally as beneficial.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mini-Lessons helped me improve my test scores
Fabulous book that I discovered last fall.I used many of the mini-lessons in the text and found my writing test scores went up tremendously.Great ideas and easy to prepare lessons. My students loved the poems and plays that were designed to help the students recall different writing skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you'll need.
I have taught elementary math for over 20 years, and have a master's degree in math education. I found this to be the best book on teaching basic concept of addition and subtraction I have ever had. There are numerous activities which require little preparation, group and individual activities, all of which will teach your students to understand the real meaning of the concepts and help them develop fluency with numbers that will make a significant difference in their futures with math.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for Every Elementary Teacher
This Developing Number Concepts Book, along with the other two books in the Developing Number Concepts series, presents a complete number curriculum for kindergarten through third grade. This book, as well as the othertwo, are clearly written and extremely user friendly. This book,Additionand Subtraction, gives novice and experienced teachers a close look at whatthe teacher needs to know about teaching these operations. The activitiesare simple and require manipulatives and materials most teachers alreadypossess, yet at the same time are child centered and motivating. The"Analyzing and Assessing Children's Needs" section is anexcellent model for providing ongoing assessment in the classroom.Ibelieve these books are a must for every elementary teacher. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
This is one of the best book I've purchase to teach my daughter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Letter Name Spellers
This is a great resource for first and second grade teachers. Many of the skills addressed are those encountered in your classroom daily.Great companion to Words Their Way, and to offer a hands on opportunity for phonics, spelling and decoding words.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great teacher tool!
I've used Words Their Way for the last year and loved the strategies. This particular book gives lots more sorts for spellers in the letter name/ alphabetic spelling stage. It includes consonant blends and diagraphs as well as more short vowel sorts. These hands on materials have been a great help to me in teaching my mildly disabled elementary students, but all the regular lower grade teachers at my school are raving, and using these great strategies and materials. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have!
This ancient times activity guide is absolutely a must-have to go along with the ancient times book!It is just full of SO MUCH MORE than you can imagine!Maps, hands-on activities, book suggestions...it will truly bring to life the history from the reader!I cannot imagine using one without the other...I can see where the ancient times books might not feel so "full" without the activity guide! It is well-worth the price and you will be thrilled at how easy it is to use, how much your children will enjoy it and how much you will all learn as a family!

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful activities
The activities in this book are very helpful for teaching ancient history. I would not limit yourself to these activities but use them as a springboard to try other things as well. When you don't have the time or inclination to do anything else then no worries you are set with this book. The activities can stand-alone and provide a superb hands on history experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
As someone who sometimes find it is a bit intimidating to teach history in an exciting, interesting way and as someone who is concerned that my young children 'won't get it'; this is a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written with practical solutions
My son was recently diagnosed with Aspergers so I purchased many books on the subject to better help him. This book by far offers the most practical solutions to everyday school issues.Reading about theories and studies is helpful up to a point but as a parent I needed hands on solutions to common problems and this book provided many options that have worked for my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm Singing to the Choir!
I haven't found anyone who hasn't found this book incredibly valuable. I have bought at least four of them because my friends keep "borrowing" them and somehow don't manage to get them back to me. It is such a helpful book that lays out point by point how our kids experience elementary school, their various challenges and how to deal with them. Any parent who is actively involved with their child who has Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger Syndrome should have this book as a reference. And every elementary school teacher working with our AS kids should read it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every AS parent should have one of these
Since my son's diagnosis at the end of first grade, I've been purchasing book after book, trying to educate myself. The realities of being a parent of an AS child means that you have to educate, not only yourself, but your child's teachers. This book is a great way to go about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to SA Spellers
This book is a great guide to teaching word study to SA learners. The reading is more simplistic and easier to understand than Words Their Way while offering appropriate sorts for this stage. It gives a more in depth view of SA spellers with an excellent sequence of instruction. It's only downfall is that many of the sorts are a little too complicated or have too many headers. It also only offers one sort for each part of a stage, even though some students may need to work within a sort for more than a week.Regardless of these negative aspects, I have really enjoyed this book and it is a great resource for any teacher's or school's library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I found it to be worthwhile.
I have enjoyed reading this book. What great ideas from other teachers and for the different age groups.I'm going to use these ideas for myself as I strive to write.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all writers everywhere
Ralph Fletcher is my mentor as I teach all aspects of writing to my students. Wonderful mini-lessons and writing strategies are backed up by sound pedagogy and research. A must have book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Model Mini-lessons for the writing workshop
I'm a relatively new teacher, and have switched grade levels every year.Teaching writing has been one of the biggest challenges for me.I believe in a writing workshop model, and use a lot of 6 Traits ideas.I knew that both relied on the idea of the writing "mini-lesson" but I really didn't know what those should look like or what kinds of topics they should cover. This book has been a godsend.I disagree with those who say that this book is too rigid.Yes, each lesson identifies particular literature resources which can be used.If you have that book, that's awesome. If not, just adapt the lesson for use with a different book that illustrates the same concept. The point is, these are concise 15 minute mini-lessons that really help your students recognize writing craft, and give them accessible ideas which they can use to improve their own writing.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a great book
This is a great book that will help future teachers and parents to teach their children literacy. It has information about how to help children to understand reading and how one can help them to learn. This book has good information for anyone who wants to become a better reader. The only thing that I dislike about the book is that the chapters are long, but it is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful text
This is a very useful, and up to date text. I'm in an education program right now that focuses heavily on literacy. This text book has become my bible! This text even carries complete lists of children's books to use for teaching certain ages and subjects!

2-0 out of 5 stars Kids know what they WANT, but do they know what they NEED?
If you eat chips in class, the teacher will give you a detention.
4-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books for new or old teachers
I was in the bookstore browsing and found this book. I've been teaching college students for over ten years, but only began teaching community college four years ago, and thus feel a bit at sea sometimes with the "high school mentality." This book contains some things that are obvious to those who have been teaching for a long time, but it's almost certain that at least one or two of the views of the kids will be helpful and will translate directly into classroom practice in a way that few books on teaching do.
5-0 out of 5 stars Please read this book teachers!
This book ROCKS. I wish that all of my teachers would read it. High school kids are sick of being treated like second class citizens or caged animals and finally here we get some respect. Thank you Kathleen Cushman for listening to intelligent teenagers and getting their words into print. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars CLAD Text
A well written text essential for acquiring CLAD credentialing. Myths are perpetuated which greatly reduces the credibility - there is only one "race", humans or Homo sapiens. Very few of us were born or came from the Caucasus Mountains of eastern Europe, yet 17th century artificial constructs of "race" and "Caucasian" are used. There is no discussion of how skin pigmentation is an ecotype adaptation, not a "race." Science, Scientific American, Discovery and other peer-reviewed journals have corrected "race" misconceptions repeatedly - yet the authors, with education backgrounds, appear to have not completed a review of current literature.5-0 out of 5 stars Golden resource
I almost felt like I was cheating on the CLAD test. This handbook was a wonderful resource and the only one I used to pass the test .... the FIRST time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I will never be the same-5 stars is not enough
As a first year teacher, I have made it my obligation to get my hands on as many resources as possible to learn my "craft." I am amazed at how much this book has changed my concept of teaching writing. I now understand what it is to "describe" a good piece of work rather than "prescribe" a good piece of work.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to teach writing to children, read this book!
I've taught for 21 years, but I always felt like there must be a better way to teach writing to children. This book tells how.Katie Wood Ray gives specific techniques for teaching structure, ways with words, and teaches you to teach your students to read like writers. For all of this, she uses the most marvelous children's books, most picture books but some young adult novels.I have worked on increasing my library under her direction, and I'm having a ball watching my students learn to love to write.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be in every reading teacher's professional library
Katie Wood Ray has made a very readable, very usable book to help teachers teach students to 'read like writers'.I use the ideas when I am reading and reviewing new children's literature and each time I begin writing instruction with my elementary remedial students. Truly shows how to integrate student writing and good children's literature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational Mom
I love this book!I have my degree in Elementary Education and spent 3 years teaching - 2 of those in Kindergarten.I have seen how many times even the best intentions do not allow the time for covering EVERYTHING you would love to expose the children with when they are in your classroom.
4-0 out of 5 stars Looking at the table of contents...
Flipping through I noticed an error that raised a red flag--the book calls hieroglyphs "Hieroglyphics".Hieroglyphic is an adjective, not a noun, unless it refers to the entire writing method:"they carved hieroglychics" is, for example, wrong. And hieroglyphs are NOT picture writing--they are 90%+ alphabetic and syllabic.Based on such a sloppy error (plus the one I note below) that was so eaily found, I would approach the history portion of this book with caution.
2-0 out of 5 stars Whole series is a bit off.
As a former teacher and current homeschooler, I find that much of the material in the early levels of this series are not appropriate for the grade levels indicated.I use the books as references but not usually at the grade indicated by the title of the book. The history sections are especially inappropriate. Children at these early grade levels do not have enough background knowledge (i.e., comprehension of the passage of time and the geography of the earth in relation to their own place in it) to fully understand the material presented. Thus, they are very unlikely to retain the knowledge or to apply it meaningfully to other areas of study. Parents trying to stick to these grade levels are bound to be frustrated. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy this for the real exams
Since this book is published by the makers of the PPST, anyone taking this test needs to buy this book simply because it contains an actual old exam. I found that this exam was very similar to the actual PPST I took, and my score on the practice exam was a good indicator of my score on the real exam. However, this book is not good if you need a thorough review of the material. It skims over things and does not go into too much detail. I needed a lot of math review and this book did not help too much with that. I also bought the Barron's book and thought that one was great for the review but mediocre on the practice tests (that one did have 3 though and this book only has one, but it is an actual old exam). So if you are taking the PPSTdefinitely buy this book but also buy a good one for a review. For that I would recommend Barrons. I got a 186 on the math and 184 on the reading and am still waiting for the writing. I owe my good scores to these two books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Praxis I Study Guide
This was a valueable resource for anyone who is self-studying for the PRAXIS exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE study guide
If you are going to take the PPST and you want to purchase a study guide to prepare, this is THE one to get. The fact that it is produced by the people that make the exams is evident throughout. Explanations are thorough and concise. The practice exams are very helpful and build testing confidence. The sample essay questions are a fantasic bonus. The only reason I did not give a rating of 5 stars is the guide's overall format/layout is a bit cumbersome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shirley Brice Heath Has a "Way With Words"
Language is power. Heath, a reflective practitioner of both human nature and schooling, provides an in-depth view of communities which epitomize thestruggle for such power. In her ethnographic study of Trackton andRoadville, Heath lays bare the socializing process of children throughwords. The discontinuity between home and school is disturbing; arealization that students who do not fit the traditional way of schoolingare left behind.Clearly illustrated is the need for teachers and studentsto bridge the gap which exists in relation to both language and culture, for without this effort some students will never acquire the power neededto take control of their education or pursue opportunities from which theyhave previously been excluded. This is must reading for studentethnographers, doctoral students, and those dedicated to school reform, particularly those in the areas of diversity in public schools, andlanguage. This extraordinary book compares favorably to "Growing UpLiterate: Learning From Inner-City Families" by Denny Taylor &Catherine Dorsey-Gaines.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher's View
Teaching in a high school with a large number of minority children can be challenging. After reading this book, recommended by the debate teacher, I feel that I am better prepared. This book is an excellent resource forthose wanting to understand the student from a background different formtheir own.If you plan to work in public school, this book is a must-read.I borrowed a friend's book, and then decided I had to have a copy of myown. ...
