5-0 out of 5 stars Just A Little Pricey...But Excellent
Mayesky balances theory, standards, and practicality in her book by organizing it like a house. She builds up the discipline from the ground (what is creative arts in early childhood) to the unique, but unnecessary, touches (applying early childhood creative arts for holidays).

3-0 out of 5 stars Written too much for math people and no solutions to exercises provided
One of the my teaching assignments over the past few years has been to teach a course called "Fundamentals of Arithmetic and Logic." The course is designed for elementary education majors, although some students take it for general education credit. Having raised a daughter, I am very familiar with trying to develop analogies that teach abstract concepts while being fun to do. In my experience, elementary education teachers need to maintain a great deal of that mindset. Children like to have fun and if you can make them giggle, you can make them learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars An effective reference for all teachers, kindergarten through high-school
Expertly authored by Michael F. Graves (Professor of Literacy Education and Guy Bond Fellow in Reading in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota), The Vocabulary Book: Learning And Instruction is an excellent instructional reference guide for classroom teachers wanting to provide their students with a more a expansive and proper understanding of English linguistics and proper manipulation of their given vocabulary. Introducing the reader to relative advice and comprehensive examples for the students' education, The Vocabulary Book acts as an effective reference for all teachers, kindergarten through high-school. The Vocabulary Book presents the reader with an invaluable and highly recommended introduction effectively guiding their students through common problems and conundrums of the English language.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE VOCABULARY BOOK: A Much Needed Resource for Teachers, Researchers, and Literacy Policymakers
THE VOCABULARY BOOK provides readers with a fascinating and compelling case for effective vocabulary instruction in our schools based on theory, research, and best practice. In clear, engaging prose, Graves helps us to understand the thinking and research of some of the best minds in vocabulary research ranging from Terman, Thorndike, and Dale to Clifford, Carnine, Beck, McKeown, Anderson, Nagy, Hart and Risley; Carlo, August, and Snow; and his own research conducted over the past 30 years.Graves covers such topics as A Four-Part Vocabulary Program, Words and Word Learning, Providing Rich and Varied Language Experiences, Teaching Individual Words, Teaching Word-Learning Strategies, Promoting Word Consciousness, and, finally, Classroom Portraits of Effective Vocabulary Instruction. His astute understanding of effective instruction for all students in concert with his insightful unpacking of the best thinking and research in vocabulary make this book the best resource available for anyone who needs to better understand the critical importance of students' word knowledge in the acquisition of literacy in our schools and our diverse culture.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Vocabulary Book
This book pairs well with Isabel Beck's book,Bringing Words to Life. Graves covers many of the same topics in vocab.in a very similar fashion, even with some of the same terminology. This is a good additional resource for teachers and reading coaches to use as an aid in helping students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This is an excellent book. My husband and I read many passages for my son. He likes them very much. They enrich his mind tremendously. My son's school somehow does not provide this much content. We would miss a lot fine literature, history, and geography without this book. Thanks to the authors. I do see the math part is too easy for second graders nowadays. For practice, we use Beestar math and ELA (a wonderful web site www.beestar.org). Its free weekly exercises are about right and very helpful. Overall, this is an outstanding book loaded with fine content. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series!
This series is great if you homeschool or want to help your child during the summer. If you want to use it for homeschool, Hirsch has made a teacher handbook. The Teacher Handbooks provide background about language arts, history and geography, visual arts, music, mathematics, and science. Each handbook has been written to look like the Core Knowledge Sequence. For each section in the Sequence, there is a matching section in the handbooks.

1-0 out of 5 stars One Teacher's Review
This textbook is one of the most boring texts I have ever read. While the information is timely, the presentation of it is difficult to read and the purpose of the language used appears to be more to impress the reader than to impart knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect science methods book
This is the ideal science methods text.It offers a solid theoretical background and clearly illustrates the practical applications of this theory. The advice about classroom management is sound, sober, and realistic.I am delighted that the authors spend an entire chapter on often neglected topics (in other science methods texts) such asprofessional development and the history of reform in science education. This text is current, smart, engaging, and informed. ... This book provides excellent insight and suggestions for teachers of English Learner students. It is perfect for teachers who are trying to integrate ELD with their regular reading and language arts program. Excellent for administrators too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome and instructive addition to professional and bilingual instructor reference collections and ESL curriculum development
Balancing Reading & Language Learning: A Resource For Teaching English Language Learners K-5 by educational consultant and former bilingual resource teacher, ESL teacher, and literacy coach Mary Cappellini offers a framework for a balanced classroom reading program that includes the use of reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading to develop a student's skills and fluency in the English language. Classroom instructors will learn how to set up an environment that will enable all English language learners to succeed in advancing their fluency and academic performance; the stages of English language proficiency and how to use them to assess and plan for individual children; advice for tapping into children's prior knowledge in their primary language while teaching reading in English, and the use of Spanish/English cognates to help develop academic language skills; how to manage numerous guided reading groups with children at all stages of reading and language proficiency, and more. Enhanced with ideas for events to involve the parents, thematic planning sample units for primary and upper grades, forms and checklists, bibliographies and suggested reading lists, Balancing Reading & Language Learning is a welcome and instructive addition to professional and bilingual instructor reference collections and ESL curriculum development resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun with a book-loving monkey
"Curious George Visits the Library" is, as the title page notes, "Illustrated in the Style of H.A. Rey" by Martha Weston. In this tale, George--"a good little monkey and always very curious"--visits the public library with his friend, the man in the yellow hat.Chaos ensues as George frolics through the library, but it all ends happily.4-0 out of 5 stars Curious George is in my favorite place!
Curious George is on another adventure. This time he's in my favorite place, the library. The man with the yellow hat has brought George to the library for story time.He likes the books but sees one on dinosaurs that he hopes the librarian reads next.He gets impatient, takes the book and runs off. This is the beginning of his adventure. He goes through the library finding neat books and making a big mess in the process. The boys and girls at the library, along with a volunteer help clean up the mess.In the end the man with the yellow hat helps George get a library card and they both check out lots of great books. 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and Superb Aid
As an owner of a business, I'm too busy to write reviews but I just had to do it for this one. This is an extraordinary aid in helping my staff to write and speak well. Every business, every student should have copies. I looked at Dr.Hayes' other grammar book--TROUBLESEOME GRAMMAR--and it's just as good. Buy it. What a help this is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, Book; Bueno!
I came here speak no English. I learn English from just this book. I can read and write English. Very good book. I thank author.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best Grammar Book Around!
As a former high school teacher and now a homeschooler, I have never come across a book that is as instructional as this one. Dr. DeVincent Hayes did an outstanding job in showing how words are put together (diagramming) to create sentences, which in turn construct paragraphs, which in turn make books, reports, and so on. An added bonus to this book is not only that it keeps learners interested, but it also teaches grammar in such a painless--and, in fact--a fun way that most students don't even realize it. My sister used this same book, along with Hayes' "Troublesome Grammar" book, as a supplement to teaching college English, and she said the kids loved the simple format and easy to follow directions. I'd like to see the author do more books like this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New to Saxon
I am new to saxon as well as to homeschooling . I recently bought this book. I only give it four stars because I have not yet proven it with my children. The book appears to be very well done. The reviewer who complained about the use of words like "some and some more",and "larger, smaller ,and difference", did not look very closely at the book. Those terms are used in conjunction with word problems, which is completetely acceptable. Who ever did words problems where they expliciltly tell you add this or subtract that.So the book is actually teaching the concept that when you see word problems with phrases like,"some more" it's going to be an addition problem. The reason Americas youth are doing so poorly is not because of books like this, it's because not enough of them are using books like this.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Some, some more"??
My son is currently using this text in the fourth grade, and I was appalled when I flipped through his book the other day. Instead of seeing simple, common terminology such as "add" or "subtract", I saw "some, some more" and "larger, smaller, difference". What this book has done is take basic concepts that are familiar to nine-year-olds and convoluted them, apparently trying to make simple tasks even easier. With books like these, which fail to use standard terminology, it's no wonder that America's youth is struggling with math skills. Addition and subtraction are basic skills that all students must know, and this book is doing our bright kids a disservice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saxon IS best!:o)
We started homeschooling with Saxon.Strayed over the years, as there are so many different math programs out there for homeschoolers to try!But guess where we ended-up?!Yep, back with Saxon Math!It is absolutely wonderful!:o)I don't have experience with the newer 3rd editions, but the 2nd edition has suited us just fine!:o)We plan to stick with it now...no need to stray again!LOL!:o) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SSR reading helps
This book is great. There are 50 ideas for keeping kids from just staring at the page when they are doing sustained silent reading. A way to be accountable, without assigning one more book report. The forms themselves may be for elementary and middle age, but the ideas will translate beautifully to the high school kids who are still staring at the pages pretending to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars reading strategies learned
I have researched many reading books for my child. This book is outstanding. Everyone seems to know what reading is about. Many parents buy reading books without much thought. This book is about reading with "intention" and "strategy". It's a skill-building training with clear methodology and objectives. It will systematically develop your child's true ability many other books won't do. It benefited my child tremendously. After applying this book for only one month, I started to see the difference. Now, they are the top readers in their classes. They often rank high in the Beestar weekly reading program (an excellent web site http://www.beestar.org). This fine book is truly thoughtful and is so effective. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Special Ed.
