4-0 out of 5 stars Curriculum Review from Hawaii
Mr. Posner's writing style infused both a sense of the practical, with enough theoretical background to create a readable textbook. As I traversed through the chapters, I slowly began to ccomprehend the true complexity of writing and interpreting curriculum. And, once I completed his book, I felt as though I had learned an entirely new way of viewing curriculum, not as a static document, but rather, as an active voice, and constantly evolving essential component of the professional educator's toolbox.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Primer on Curriculum Available
After you get over sticker shock on the price of this book, buy it if you are in need of a basic understanding of how curriculum has been organized and developed in American education. No other publication is comparable to it for its succinct overview of the curriculum process and those who have most profoundly shaped it. However, it does not provide in-depth commentary on the movers and shakers in this field. Likewise, those seeking a detailed history of curriculum development are advised to look elsewhere. I used this book in a curriculum course I taught and students found it quite accessible.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start to understanding curriculum changes, and fights
Posner's field is curriculum development, and he has written extensively about how teachers, administrators, supervisors, and ultimately the public thinks about curriculum and curriculum reform. In this book, Analyzing theCurriculum, he presents tools to understand the conflicts within educationand education reform, by underlining the implicit assumptions in all formsof curriculum reform. These assumptions include (1) how learners learn,(2) how teachers teach, (3) the locus of reform (university-based,collegially based in the school); (4) the political contexts of reform.Heprovides several detailed examples of curriculum analysis, ranging fromJerome Bruner's Man: A Course of Study and Jerrold Zacharias' PhysicalScience Study Committee (both university-based reform curricula) to the"whole language" movement. In each case he is fair to the meritsand demerits of the curriculum in question.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Differences are what make the world so great
Charlie and Isabelle are the same age but they have some differences. For example, Charlie is tall and Isabelle is short, and whereas Charlie runs fast, Isabelle likes to take her time. The last difference that Charlie explains is when he tells us: "I know a lot of words.Isabelle's words are sometimes hard for me to understand."In the text of "My Friend Isabelle," author Eliza Woloson never comes out and says that Isabelle has Down syndrome and I was thinking that any indication of her condition in Bryan Gough's illustrations might well be too subtle for young children to pick up.But then it occurred to me that if a parent was reading this book to young children, or let them read it on their own, and then there was probably already a child with Down syndrome in the family or in the neighborhood.
5-0 out of 5 stars "My Friend Isabelle"
"My Friend Isabelle" is a book that ALL parents should have on their bookshelf. It celebrates the relationship between two children who are different from one another. It is an important book because today's classrooms are becoming more and more diverse. This book is a great tool to introduce these differences.I have been waiting for a book like "My Friend Isabelle".Thank you Ms. Woloson for being so insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The World Has Needed This Book for Some Time.
I can't praise this book enough. The illustrations and straightforward story line appeal to children while the message is one all aldults need to see.As the mother of a Down Syndrome child, I was overjoyed at how clearly the message came through that Down Syndrome kids are kids first. They enjoy all the usual childhood activities and enjoy friendships with thier non-Downs peers as well.I plan on purchasing this book for our local public library and our elementary school library as well. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Unsatisfied
We purchased this and the second grade edition this year. This is my first and last experience with these books and the author. The only part of the books I found helpful was the math sections.I feel the history was a bit over their heads and the study of Greek mythology for a second grader was rediculous. In the fourth grade edition I was very dipleased to see evolution as a main source of study. We are homeschoolers and I teach not only from the three R's but from the very Word of God.No matter what your religious faith or lack thereof, I feel that placing an emphasis on one view being taught in in a broad spectrum is ludicrous.I did not know the author's stand point before purchasing the books and will not line his wallet with my money again.

We bought this to use with our daughter who just started fourth grade. We used the third grade version this summer and were pleased enough with it to give this one a try.As with the other, the history portions were well written and easy for her to understand. The choices for poetry and literature are just unusual enough for her to be interested in.If I were homeschooling, I wouldn't rely on this alone, but it does make a very helpful and handy tool for suplimenting a public school education. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for to be teachers!
Being a 2nd year early childhood education student at Miami University (in Ohio!) this book is very helpful in many ways. My first time reading it bored me to tears because it all seemed like common sense but reading the DAP section for 3-5 year olds was very interesting. I had done 2 weeks field expereince at a preschool and could compare what was developmentally approraite in the classroom I was in. Plus it was an excellent tool when going to do my assignments!

EVERY early childhood teacher should have this book.It is affectionately known as "The Bredekamp book", "Developmentally Appropriate Practice", and "DAP". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A history of America's best-kept secret
With a limited understanding of osteopathic medicine's roots, I set on a crash course to find an osteopathic medical history book similar to what a Kenneth Ludmerer's "Time to Heal" did for the history of medicine itself. And with Norman Gevitz's book, I was surely not disappointed. One would think that as a book recommended by the AOA and written by a osteopathic medical school professor, the book would be slanted. However, Gevitz does a great job at maintaining neutrality as a historian while demonstrating a certain degree of candidness, particularly about M.D./D.O. relations and the future of osteopathic medicine.Despite my ecstasy for this book, I do feel that there are certain portions of this book that can be further elaborated (reasoning behind the four-star rating). For example, I would like it if more material was included about osteopathic medicine between 1960 and today.Specifically, Gevitz seems to gloss over the political and social reverberations behind Henry Kissinger's monumental decision to admit D.O.s in the military as equals to M.D.s.Nevertheless, I thought the book was very well written and has definitely sparked an interest into one of this nation's best-kept secrets. ... This book has made learning fun for both my son and myself. We enjoy the CD and the flashcards. The FlipFlop concept is great. The lesson plans are short enough to keep my 3 year old engaged. Our daycare is planning on using this as a learning tool in the 3-5 year old rooms -- I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifeline
After 12 years teaching middle school, I am now teaching second grade. This book has become one of my most treasured resources. This clearly and concisely explained the purpose and practical upkeep of 30 learning centers.I have used many of the activities as a springboard for countless other center activities.Don't walk, RUN to get this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I have bought many books recently on literacy centers and this book is by far the best!It gives you background information on the purpose of centers but really focuses on making it work for you.It gives tons of easy to put together center activities and reproducible sheets.By far the most teacher friendly book on centers I now own.

I'm glad I purchased this book during summer break. It gives advice on how to prepare 30 different centers along with amusing management tips.It is a lot to digest and prepare but its "ready to copy" log sheets for student accountability, and the materials lists for each center, makes set up a snap. The centers work on skills that I have taught and practiced at different times during the school year. Those skills can now be reiforced on a regular basis during our reading block. Even the choice of materials adds an element of fun.I can't wait to test out these center ideas on my third graders! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Review
Children and Their Art is the most comprehensive textbook available for teaching art education methods. This bestselling textbook covers all aspects of teaching art in the elementary classroom: the basic principles and goals of art education, the characteristics and needs of children as learners, the core principles of art as a subject-aesthetics, principles of design, art history, art media-and all aspects of instruction-curriculum planning, sample lessons, classroom management, and assessment. The seventh edition has been thoroughly updated and includes coverage of the National Standards for Art Education as well as the impact of postmodern thought on the practice of art education. It also provides a concise overview of child development theories and the latest findings on child development and brain research, including Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Teacher Resource -- for the arts
This is a great book to use in a pre-service teacher education program. However, I am a long-time art educator and I still refer to it because it has a wide range of information on issues we encounter every day. This yearI am teaching the art class for undergraduate elementary teachers and it isproving a very valuable resource. It is written in a readable, highlypractical way with lots of examples that make adding art into an elementarycurriculum not seem so foreign or so daunting. I do feel that there is aneed for other supplemental reading and resources to accompany this text, but it is a great overall art education text, especially for the generalistteacher. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Parents
I must respectfully but vehemently disagree with "A Reader" who said that this book was inaccurate.I am a Montessori directress with a diploma from the Association Montessori Internationale - the international organization founded by Dr. Montessori - and a Masters in Montessori Education from Loyola College in Baltimore. In fact, my trainer was trained by Dr. Montessori herself.I have ten years' experience teaching in Montessori primary classrooms.I have found all of Ms. Lillard's books to be quite accurate. She does an excellent job of taking the great volumes written by Dr. Montessori and distilling them down to the points that are important for parents to understand. She presents things in very straightforward terms. For those of us who have devoted our lives to studying Montessori principles in depth, some of the points may seem to be "oversimplified" but they are most certainly not innacurate. These books are meant to be a resource for parents, not for Montessorians in training.I recommend her books over and over for parents who want to learn more about Montessori education.
