3-0 out of 5 stars She needs to practice what she preaches
Spandel has done her homework and has used the trait system extensively in her classroom, which gives her much credibility. However, a well-organized reference book puts all the information about one topic in one place. Unfortunately, information about each of the traits is scattered around the book, making it extremely annoying. I'm sure she could have done better, and we all hope a new edition will prove she can even use the trait of organization herself. Let's practice what we preach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need help with 6-Traits Writing?-
Do you ever wonder how to score writing samples from the students in your classroom? This is the book for you!Actual writing samples are presented and evaluated.Ideas for lessons are also included. This is a must-have resource for those teaching the 6-traits of writing !

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond test taking, create life-long writers with voices!
Once again,in her fourth and finest revision of Creating Writers, Vicki shows us how to create more effective, independent writers.Using volumes of practice papers, scores of focused, creative trait lessons, and visits into trait-and-process based classrooms, Creating Writers helps all teachers envision how to design our own instruction models to defeat test anxiety!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Writing Resource Out There!
While I've been teaching for many years, there is rarely a source I can use without reinventing it almost completely to meet my needs. This is not the case with Teaching Qualities of Writing. It is fantastic!!!I purchased the book and the CD with lessons. It is fantastic! The various writing lessons are taught in a spiral fashion building on the other qualities. They all fit in perfectly with the six trait writing my district is focused on this year. Many of the ideas I have used for years but Portalupi and Fletcher have added a new level, a new resource and books sources for many of my lessons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a clinical psychologist specializing in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders, I have found this book to be an excellent resource.I recommend it to many families, andto teachers who work with this population. One of the strengths of this book is its articulate examination of the interplay between the cognitive, social and behavioral issues experienced by individuals with Aspergers. The book also suggests a number of intervention strategies that are realistic, practical and helpful for addressing skills deficits and encouraging the potential for individuals with Aspergers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book about academics in the adolescent years ! !
This book focuses specifically on academic issues of children with Asperger's in middle and high school. There are many other books about other aspects of Aspergers, but this is the only good book I have found on this specific topic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good scheduling advice but little on pragmatics
There is a wealth of advice in this book which all parents and teachers should find helpful.Plenty of checklists are offered and numerous cameo case histories are presented. The references are good but perhaps a bit limited (may be of importance only to researchers - no mention of central coherence deficit for instance). The main point of the book is the get schools to recognise and deal with stress build up in AS pupils before it boils over. Some of this will be familiar from Myles' other book on tantrum management.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be
I teach drama/theater in a low income public school. I bought the book because my school has very few resources and I thought this might be useful. As it turned out the book was hardly used during my first year teaching. My biggest problem with this book is that it is not very user friendly for a teacher who just wants to add some fun to a class but not a complex game. In other words the book needs to make the games simpler so the kids can pick them up faster and have more fun. This might not be problem for teachers in high school as your students might be more mature and able to handle more complex games. But for middle school teachers tread lightly. Also if you have a bunch of behavior problems in your class then forgot about it. In my experience I found the worse the behavior the better they were at spoiling fun classroom games. Be warned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Theater Games for the Classroom: A Teacher's Handbook
EXCELLENT!!Inspiring. Well Organized. So many great ideas for the new or seasoned acting teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Ready-to-Use!
As a middle school writing teacher, it is always my goal to optimize the effectiveness of writing workshop. Most "ready-to-use" teacher resources that are suitable for mini-lessons fall short of my expectations, so I tend to create my own. Every page of this book is useful! The handouts may be used in any order and cover a wide range of literary devices, grammar rules and writing skills. Students read and respond to high-interest passages to develop as readers and writers. I highly recommend this resource! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb blend of humor and education
A superb blend of humor and education and enhanced with an accompany CD, Idioms For Aliens: A Grammar Revue Of Plays And Verse written by Ed Butts and illustrated by Michael Tonn is an anthology of short skits that center around concepts of English grammar. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, with one potential problem
I've been using this with my daughter, who has struggled with other programs and she is making very good progress. Everything is broken down into managable chunks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worked Fairly Well for My Family
I am a homeschool mom of four kids. I started my oldest two sons at around age 5 to 5 1/2. While it isn't the most thrilling program out there it is very simple. I mostly skipped teaching them their alphabet and taught them their letters one at a time using PP. (They were already familiar with the idea of letters making unique sounds but hadn't put the ideas all together yet.) It starts with teaching the short vowel sounds first, then most of the consonants and on from there. I was able to work with each child for about 10 minutes a day for 3-5 days a week. Within a couple of weeks they had picked up on a bit and soon were reading small words.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not a professional but found this greatly informative and helpful
I am not a teacher, nor degreed in education.I found this book exhaustive and thorough. It provided more information than I knew existed and my grandson (8years) has used the information to his benefit. It reguires systematic and committed use to master its contents. I believe it will be worth its price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Lifesaver
I am a first year math teacher and I bought this book during my first semester.I wouldn't call this an Activity book with Real-World Applications. It's really a book of 150 very good worksheets.I give my students a worksheet from this book when I want them to review concepts I have already taught or for extra credit. It is a lot better than a boring practice worksheet. 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but there's probably better
I had to get this book for a class. There are some good ideas in it, but the authors expect you to perform every experiment in it, and if you don't, you "miss out" on many of their ideas. It seems a little ridiculous -- one chapter is over 100 pages long and there are a TON of experiments in that chapter alone that the authors refer to over and over again.I'm sorry, but I did not have the time to do those activities!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Elementary Education Resource
This is a wonderful resource for Elementary Education Majors. Easy read!

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is very useful, but contains a glaring error!
I am using this book as a reference for a master's project I am working on in education.I have found the book to be very useful and helpful. However, I am deeply disturbed by a glaring error contained in the text. Martin briefly overviews the history of the process approach to scienceeducation near the beginning of the book.Since I am including a historyin my project, I have paid careful attention to this section. He states,"In October, 1959, the United States felt deeply humiliated by thelaunching of the Soviet spaceship, Sputnik" (p. 16).This eventoccurred on October 4, 1957!He goes on to say that the Woods HoleConference took place one month earlier. In reality, Woods Hole took placein September of 1959, nearly two years later (Bruner, 1960).Thesemistakes almost discredit the entire book for me.Let's hope that the new1999 edition corrects these errors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kindergarten teacher
Excellent, excellent book for your reading and writing program.DO NOT teach without it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Educators Recommend
The research is clear concerning writing workshops: They are the most effective way to teach the craft and process of writing. This being the case, they should not, contend the authors, be reserved for the upper grades. Rather, all writers-including kindergartners and older emergent writers-should have the opportunity to experience the writer's workshop. 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!

5-0 out of 5 stars Telling Stories at Taipei American School
As an elementary teacher for almost ten years, I've recognized the importance of telling stories to children and have been telling stories for years.I was missing a piece of the literacy puzzle, the piece in which children tell stories themselves, but I didn't know how to approach it until I stumbled across Mitch and Martha at a storytelling conference and bought their book.It provides a practical, manageable approach to teaching children to tell stories. Our school has a high percentage of ESL students and the lessons and activities in this book are of particular relevance.Perhaps the most important part of the book is the companion DVD.It's truly an inspiring 20 minutes.I've shown it several times around our school and teachers who claimed they have no time for storytelling are now finding time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book you can buy by its cover!
This book is as good as its cover and its cover is t-e-r-r-i-f-i-c! From the cover, and most importantly when you dive into the wealth of information within the book, it is clear that storytellers Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss know storytelling
5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Storytelling Resource for Teachers & Librarians
Children Tell Stories is an exciting and valuable resource to teach the art of storytelling in your classroom. The first edition was most helpful, but this update is even more powerful. The accompanying DVD is outstanding by highlighting the techniques described in the text. ALL teachers need a copy of this remarkable and user-friendly book to share the excitement and value of storytelling within their classrooms. As an elementary librarian, I've found this to be invaluable while working with students.

As a first year fourth grade teacher I have found this to be an EXCELLENT teaching resource.I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to use phonics to improve reading and spelling - it has helped me both on a personal and a professional level. The information is in-depth and yet presented in a very user friendly format which has been logical and easy for me to build upon and REALLY USE!
