5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, multi-dimensional primer on Mexican migration, and a great buy!
When I purchased this book (with accompanying dvd and cd)for a course I teach, I never expected to get so much for my money: I've just spent the better part of a day exploring just some of the resources it provides. In one beautifully-produced package, it contains the newly-enhanced "director's cut" of "Alambrista" a wonderful full-length feature film first made in 1977, which is still extremely timely and which I believe everyone in both the U.S. and Mexico should see; on the same dvd, a fine documentary on migrant children ("Children of the Fields") and amazingly substantial interviews with filmmakers, musicians and scholars. PLUS, another cut of the feature film, with a voice-over by the musical director explaining the process of designing the new soundtrack. AND, a separate song-by-song, scene-by-scene view of the music. All that, along with the book, Part One of which explores the historical and political context in well-researched, lively essays by such fine scholars as Albert Camarillo and Teresa Carillo: Part Two offers equally valuable essays on film criticism and analysis as they relate to the project. Every single element is profoundly informative, captivating and stimulating: I learned much more about immigration, border and gender issues, filmmaking and music than I ever expected. I can't wait to share the film, and its multimedia exegesis, with my students -- as well as my colleagues, family and friends. All in all, a treasure trove for anyone wishing to better understand migration in these troubled times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Immigration, asylum and criminal policies
WE ARE ALL SUSPECTS NOW: UNTOLD STORIES FROM IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES AFTER 9/11 is essential reading for any who would understand the changed lives of immigrants in the U.S. after the event. It gathers the personal stories of communities affected by post-9/11 tension and threats to civil liberties, examining immigration, asylum and criminal policies and how these have affected thousands of immigrants past and present. Changes to these policies reflect a shift to the right - and a shift in how immigrant communities are surveyed and managed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Immigrant Stories After 9/11
This book is a collection of stories of prejudice, discrimination and racial profiling brought on by events and government policies after the September 11th attacks on the United States. It explains what some of these immigrants went through both before and after the attacks of September 11th.The author does a good job explaining the unjust detainment and sometimes even the deportment of immigrants around the country.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good guidance to understand EU integration
The book gives a clear clue of the integration of the EU through the past fifty years. It reviews the general background behind every integration, which is much helpful to particularly law students.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good start for beginners, a little dry.
I knew virtually nothing about the Europena Union before reading this book, so I don't know how valuable it would be for an experienced EU scholar. However, for someone like myself it covers all the basics (what istitutions are involved?) and a good history from conception to today. The reading is a little dry, mostly due to the number of details involved, but not difficult to read.It makes a good starting point for those wishing to familiarize themselves with the the general history of European integration before going on to further study. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Frontiersmen
Overall a good study of the last great westward folk migration in American history. I would add that many of their predecessors in the "classic" frontier period were just as broke and hungry as these migrants, but there was little mass media around to record them.An interesting, well-done slice of folk Americana.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great companion to Grapes of Wrath
James Gregory has put together a outstanding history of the migration and culture of the dust bowl migrants who settled in California.I have probably read Grapes of Wrath four or five times since first reading it in high school, but after reading Gregory's description of the way these poor south-westerners struggled with poverty and at the same time maintained family unity and cultural pride, Steinbeck's book takes on a whole new meaning.Gregory goes step by step to show what motivated many to move, and then what motivated them to stay even though they suffered great privations and predjudice.I especially enjoyed learning about the influences of country music not just upon the migrants, but on the entire nation.A must read to make Grapes more clear!

4-0 out of 5 stars American Exodus: Okies in California How They Really Were
I thought that this was a good book.I read it for a history course on the Great Depression and it was definately worth reading. It can get a little bogged down in detail or a little dull ocassionally, but overall itis a good view of "okie culture". It really helped be tounderstand the diversity and impact of the migration. And it contains a fewinteresting personal stories as well! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Picasso of American histories
"On Persecution, Identity & Activism: Aspects of the Italian-American Experience from the Late 19th Century to Today," could easily be called a new classic of Cultural Studies. Containing contemporary sources of information such as chat room debates, listserv posting and web page persuasion, "On Persecution," reveals the past with present means to better the future. This book clearly dispels the politically correct myth of easy assimilation into the American Dream. By examining the history of the Italian peoples in America, Cristogianni Borsella enlightens the current debate on illegal immigration of Mexicans crossing our southern most border. They don't want to assimilate. They work the jobs no American wants. They're dirty, uneducated and criminals. These claims are not new or unique to the Mexicans. Borsella documents these same remarks as applied to the new immigrants from Italy of the nineteenth century.

These books will one day be recorded as history told before its time. While the mainstream shurgs him now, he will be required reading years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Prophetic when written and still timely today--worth reading again now!
This book surprised me, and it will suprise any open-minded reader who is more interested in a pursuit of truth than in political correctness.
3-0 out of 5 stars This traitor endorsed Bush
For all the brave and true things he might have said in this book, let us not forget that he endorsed Bush in the 2004 election. By that action, it is obvious that Buchanan churns out these manifestos simply to pad his rather luxurious Maclean, VA nest, not to effect any real change. During the 2000 election, Buchanan promised to spend the next 4 years building up a viable conservative Third Party alternative. He completely reneged on that promise. He did spend the next 4 years explaining pretty convincingly why the Republican Party was no different than the Democrats, but then went and endorsed Bush in 2004, despite the fact that the genuinely conservative Constitution Party was on the ballot in 36 states. By that endorsement, Buchanan bears just as much responsibility for our current problems as Bush does. Seeing as Buchanan has more than two brain cells to rub together, his sin is arguably greater.

Editorial Review

To future generations, the late 20th century may come to be known as the time of the DPs: Displaced Persons. Migration and refugeeism are raising inflammatory issues from unified Germany to the Tex-Mex border. Into this whirlpool of half-truths, sermons, prejudices, and fears dives Hoover Institution economist and syndicated columnist Thomas Sowell. It is not necessary to agree with all of Sowell's views to admire his imposing attempt to arrive at a theory of migration and culture. Or to succumb to his fascinating tales of how immigrants from Germany, Japan, China, and other countries have coped--and excelled--on strange new shores. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, Persuasive Examination of Migrants Across the Globe
Distinguished Stanford University economist Thomas Sowell's "Migrations and Cultures: A World View" is the most thoughtful, articulate examination of immigration across the globe which I've encountered (Though, I might add, that I am not surprised that this book is truly exceptional, given Sowell's keen interest in - and superb scholarship on - this very subject, which I came across for the first time years ago in his earlier book "Ethnic America: A History".). Sowell traces the immigration histories of six Eurasian peoples: Germans, Japanese, Italians, Chinese, Jews and Indians (from the Indian subcontinent, NOT the Americas). He contends that the relative success of these peoples as migrants owes more to their cultural capital (the set of beliefs and practices taken from their ancestral homelands) than to the economic capital of their new countries. It is a compelling argument which he demonstrates repeatedly, tracing the migration patterns of each of these peoples across the globe. Furthermore, it is an argument which is well-reasoned, fully supported by ample data, noting for example, the degree to which Indian migrants from different parts of India have been able to accrue wealth for themselves and their descendants in far-flung regions such as East Africa, Caribbean islands, and the United States (For example, he observes that Guajaratis, migrants from the Indian state of Guajarat, are far more likely to become successful entrepreneurs than those from other Indian states, since Guajarat has had a long history of successful entrepreneurship; in a similar vein, he compares and contrasts the relative economic fortunes of Western European Jews with those from Eastern Europe, noting that the former were more likely to become successful, due to a much stronger entrepreneurial tradition in Western Europe.).
4-0 out of 5 stars Migrations and Cultures
Dr. Sowell has again done a masterful job of presenting information on the status of minorities, both historically and geographically, which is usually not included in the debate about the situation of the minorities in the United States. His insights are very useful and should be included in every high school and college curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, thorough, and candid
How does moving from one country to another, or from one continent to another, affect people? How does it affect the lifestyle of those who move?Conversely, how does this change the culture of the recipient country? In his book MIGRATIONS AND CULTURES, Thomas Sowell explores the various answers to these questions by examining the historical changes wrought by migrations amongst six different groups of people: Germans, Japanese, Italians, Chinese, Jews, and Indians (from India, not North America).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Transnational Adoption: Beyond a Singular Lens?
This edited collection by Toby Volkman has a fair few adoptive parents (who are academically working as anthropologists) playing the roles of interrogators, interpreters and story tellers of this global phenomenon. Sometimes the object of their analysis is their own community (adoptive parents) and sometimes it is Others (birth parents, the overseas children they adopt).
5-0 out of 5 stars Mapping Transnational Adoption
Toby Volkman, editor of this volume and an anthropologist, describes the uncharted territory and cultures that transnational adoption is fast creating as the "new geographies of kinship."Indeed, the contributors to this thoughtful volume examine with courage and carefully grounded research, difficult subjects, such as the motivations of birth mothers in relinquishing their children to international adoption, or the struggles of adoptive parents and their children as they seek to constitute new identities despite minimal cultural knowledge of their children's country, gaps in memory, and the absence of connections with birth parents. The themes range widely to include the power of the internet in shaping popular representations of international adoption; the ways in which mythologies and fantasies confront realities as adoptive children make return journeys to their country of origin; and changing national policies of sending countries as they reconsider the stigma they once associated with mixed children adopted internationally who were the product of love and war.The contributors pay close attention to the larger political and economic forces that frame the contradictions and struggles entailed by transnational adoption. At the same time that they do not fall into the trap of romantic narratives of rescuing children, they are sympathetic to the good faith efforts of families to make sense of a world for which few road maps are available. Most, but not all, of the authors are adoptive parents themselves and therefore do not lose sight of the positioning and perspectives underlying the ethics and practices of all the actors and institutions involved in these journeys. This is first-rate ethnography. The book is beautifully edited and well-written; the language is accessible; and many first-hand accounts are offered.I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in gaining a solid introduction to the complexity of the issues involved in transnational adoption, as well as to readers more generally interested inkinship, marriage, and the family. ...
