5-0 out of 5 stars A Journey through Complexities
I enjoyed this book very much.It is an academic writing that gives deep exploration of the existing literature on the subject under study and provides fascinating insight into the complexities of migrations and migrants. It is also a literary work that is written in poetic style and fraught with endless philosophical thoughts.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and learn about immigration
I'm a college student and was asked to read this book for one of my classes.Going into reading this book, I knew absolutely nothing about the history of immigration, the details of the legislation, or the problems our nation is facing.5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory book to immigration...
This text is a composition of short essays that lends insight into one of the most controversial issues of today. It provides the framework for a heated debate by arguing various perspectives of immigration. It's a quickread (not dry at all!), informative, interesting and succinct. Highlyrecommended for those who know very little about the controversysurrounding immigration and would like to catch up. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book, terrible price
This book is made up of essays from a conference.Like all such books some of the essays are better than others. Most in this volume are quite good, with Stephen Perry's especially sticking out as excellent. It's a book worth reading for both lawyers and legal scholars interested in immigration and philosophers and political theorist who want to get a better hand on this neglected and under-theorised area of political and legal philosophy. The only draw back is the outragous price, putting it out of most buyer's range. We can only hope cambridge will eventually see fit to publish a paper-back.Until then, read it in the library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good survey book on Puerto Ricans
A Puerto Rican woman with a Ph.D in Puerto Rican Studies who teaches Puerto Rican studies has written this survey book about Puerto Ricans. At first, this book looked really simplistic, like it could have been called "Get to know Puerto Ricans" or something. However, it turns out that this book is a part of a series to introduce Americans to the new face of immigrants; it's a very-needed, pro-immigrant, anti-xenophobic series.I also wondered why this is such an easy and quick read and then I discovered that the book is written for high school students, though I found it in a university library.Still, this would be a good, quick reference books for any ethnic studies majors at the undergraduate level.Puerto Ricans may find the info here a given and already known, but for non-Puerto Ricans, it will be a great learning, introductory resource. For those who live outside New York and know that Mexican-Americans are the majority Latino group, it will be interesting to read phrases such as "Puerto Ricans and other Latinos" as opposed to "Mexican-Americans and other Latinos."The cover is gorgeous:I want to meet the hot woman and man on the cover more than I want to meet the author! This book celebrates the triracial background of Puerto Ricans being Taino, African, and Spanish. The author breaks the black-white paradigm by not only discussing Puerto Ricans' relationships with those two groups but also with non-Puerto Rican Latinos, Jews, and Asians.I did feel this book was a little scant on the debates about Puerto Rican independence.Still, this was an informative "Who's Who of Puerto Ricans?" text. For example, I never knew Jimmy Smits was Puerto Rican (I had only heard about his father's heritage, Surinamese). Also, the author notes that many famous people that are grouped as African-American are also part-Puerto Rican (Clayton Powell IV, Sammy Davis, etc.).Finally, there's something I like that the author probably didn't intend:I thought this was a great book about a US territory. Most students have to do reports on Nebraska, Delaware, or Wyoming sooner or later. But few Mainlanders realize that the people in Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, and the Virgin Island are our peers. This book will help to overcome this problem.I liked this book and plan on reading more in the series. As a non-Puerto Rican, I learned a lot. ... "Chea, how come good doesn't win over evil?" young Chanrithy Him asks her sister, after the brutal Khmer Rouge have seized power in Cambodia, but before hunger makes them too weak for philosophy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading
I met Ms. Him at a book signing and have a hardcover signed by her.She is a beautiful, gentle woman with one of the most musical voices I have ever heard. To listen to the stories of unspeakable horror that issued from her lips as she read a passage chilled me.She is my age; while I was struggling with Algebra, she was sturuggling with pure evil.I promised her that I would do my best to never let her story be forgotten. My children will be required to read this when they reach the age she was in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This is a great biography of a Child's perspective of the Khamer Rougue take over in Cambodia in the 1970's. Chanrithy's story will stir up every emotion in you. This is a real story about survival during a very dark time in history. Her escapes from labor death camps, while nearly dying from starvation and sickness. The constant fear of military attack, or excecution by the Khamer Rouge soldiers. The loss of innocence, freedom, family, Friends, a life she once knew and culture she once cherished.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vivid, shocking account of destruction of Cambodia
This is a great story illustrating the strength of the human spirit and the will to live and thrive against all odds.Chanrithy Him effectively loses her childhood when her home is bombed as a small child by the Khumer Rouge and her family is thrown into the middle of war-torn Cambodia, struggling to stay together and to survive.Hers is an amazing firsthand account of the horrors of slavery, execution, starvation and disease her family went through in a relatively modern era of the 70s.The clippings from the US newspapers of the time detailing the events overseas bring to mind the huge differences between a country of freedom and prosperity vs. a country being torn apart by bombs and ruthless individuals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Souls in Exile
This book might prove to be a groundbreaker in the world's understanding of refugees and their struggles. Caroline Moorehead interviewed many refugees who have suffered through a myriad of challenges, with coverage of many different refugee environments as well. Some examples include a shipwreck of boat people off of Sicily, Liberians facing discrimination in Cairo, and the warm welcome but lack of opportunity found by some Sudanese in Finland. Moorehead finds that there are many gray areas in the social problems that cause people to leave their home countries and drift into hopeless exile, and the millions of refugees in the world cannot be easily categorized into mere economic opportunists vs. people facing immediate threats of violence or warfare. The most remarkable aspect of this book is the common theme found in the lives of all sorts of refugees, notably the crushing feelings of aimlessness caused by the interminable limbo of asylum procedures, and living a stateless and unwanted existence with no known future improvement.
2-0 out of 5 stars Accuracy suspect
I read a few chapters of this book, and it struck me as well written and interesting. But then I got to the chapter on the Palestinians. Here the author talks about the Israeli Haganah lining up Palestinian families and shooting them dead.According to my Dad, who was part of the "Stern Gang", no such thing happened. She talks about other disasters that befell the Palestinians, without giving context. For instance, Kuwait expelled its Palestinian workers, but there was a reason. The Palestinians had welcomed the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq.Another disaster was when the Lebanese turned against the Palestinians. There was a reason for that too, the Palestinians had taken charge of the Southern Lebanon area and abused its inhabitants. The author should not be too credulous when talking with refugees. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Trying to sanitize and sugarcoat a murderers sins!
The authors style of writing was entertaining but on further examination I feel that he tried to portray his father in the very best possible light by keeping the reader fascinated with the story when the truth may have been that the man was nothing more than a two bit punk and murderer. I say this because in some of the instances where people were murdered , you had to ask yourself who stood to gain the most from their deaths and the answer seemed to always point to his father. To illustrate this there was a part in the book where the father and business partner split up and decide to lay low from the law for awhile. The father loans this expensive car to the partner at the time(why?) and yet the partner and his girlfriend end up not only dead but also they and the car are burned completely so as not to be I.D.ed.The writer alludes some sort of retribution by other "italian" bootleggers for his betrayal. Again I pose the question as who stood to gain most from this and you can see where this is going.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful family saga
I read the English version several years ago and loved it. The author has a lovely literary style that makes you laugh, cry, and sigh. The historical setting was similar to that of my grandparents and their families who came here to California because of the terror of the Mexican Revolution of 1910.My older family members were also raised in the interior valleys and could have worked side by side with some of the Villasenor family members back then.I cried at each chapter and I can hardly wait to see the movie version, which I hope will have well selected actors playing the major parts.I have seen the TV version of the Ballad of Gregorio Cortez and thought it was very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
Victor Villasenor wrote one of the premier literary works in the entire area of Mexican American Literature when he wrote Rain of Gold (Lluvia de Oro).It is a rare piece of art that can be appreciated by Mexican Americans such as myself or those from other cultures such as my Anglo wife.We felt like together we made the journey with Lupe.Read more

This account of the Highlanders and particularly of my ancestor, Alexander McAllister, and the role he played was most informative. I was not familiar with the details of their mid 18th century migration to America. For other researchers, information can also be gained by accessing the web page for Clan McAlister of America.Of course, the name has been spelled different ways, but this is the same Clan. This book has excellent information on where my line came from in the Highlands. The description of the economy, the living conditions, the government and clan disharmony, as well as the religion question, all provide a good picture of where our Scots came from and the conditions of their lives. My McRae family came to Carolina in 1774, so this timeline used in this book covered the years preceding, as well as a few following their immigration.I was very interested in the motives for migration. This provided many more than I had previously read about.Because the years led directly into our revolution, it is especially relevant to read this information on the Scots question whether to serve as loyalist or as revolutionary. This proved, as well as disproved several theories which are in print.I appreciate having this book in my reference library. It has more specific descriptive information about the Scots' living conditions both in Scotland and in North Carolina than any other source I have consulted. ... Read more
