5-0 out of 5 stars Quality
This book was received quickly and was in perfect shape.I appreciate the promptness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory text!
Parrillo's text is a helpful overview of the sociology of race and ethnicity in the United States taken from a group-to-groupapproach.Major sociological contributions on these matters are covered through the lens of particular groups that are most affected (e.g. LA riots are covered under black Americans but not under Korean Americans). The most recent edition is especially helpful as comments are made in conjunction with post-September 11th consequences on race and ethnic issues. The role of religion in racial dynamics and the continuing changes in immigration is a helpful addition as well as it is a rising area of study with race and ethnicity.5-0 out of 5 stars From the Foreword author:
Strangers to These Shores is a comprehensive examination of the sharpest edges and more nuanced qualities of American pluralism. In its 14 chapters, Professor Parrillo provides students/readers--and those for whomit is not assigned--with a well conceived, carefully constructed, andhighly readable introduction to a very complex subject. --Peter I. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Relevant
This is a great book for finding out how to bring people of differing race to an understanding. For instance, I remember one example where White students, approximately between the ages of thirteen and sixteen, were, as part of a therapeutic course, required to refer to all Black people in their environment as 'sir'.This simple sign of respect was a great way to dismantle racism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethnicity and Family Therapy, third edition
This is one of the best psychology books I have ever read. Not only does it provide advice on how to treat people from certain cultures, it teaches the reader about the culture itself. This book is a marriage of cultural studies and psychology. While the book is large, the reader shouldn't be intimidated by its size. The book is broken up into several (50+) chapters and each chapter focuses on one culture. The book doesn't have to be read cover to cover. Each chapter is free standing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all professionals working with families
This book is insightful as the author elaborates on different ethnic populations and the broad range of cultural influences that family therapists encounter in clinical practice. It is a must read for all professionals working in the field of family therapy, social work, psychotherapy and counselling who work with different ethnic populations. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An online review by Courtney and Jenny
This book has opened our eyes to many issues we did not think about or explore prior to reading this book.Richard Rothstein does an excellent job pointing out the many contributing factors to the "Black-White Achievement Gap" in America.Even though some of Rothstein's ideas are expressed in other articles and books, these important issues and topics he reiterates only emphasizes the attention that this issues needs.Rothstein addresses that, as a society, we need to do more for students than just a good job of addressing issues and raising questions. The last chapter of his book deals with different ways teachers, educators, parents, and health officials can step in and intervene into children's lives in order to work on closing the achievement gap between lower- and middle-class families.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well researched defense of public education
I looked to Rothstein's book for a thoroughly documented defense of public education in light of its inability to resolve fundamental inequalities.I was not disappointed but those who seek feasible proposals to remedy the problem will not find it here. The basic solution seems to be to extend the public education system into early childhood.I see a number of problems:1. if we cannot afford the employment of highly paid teaching professionals in K-12, how will we do it for early childhood professionals paid at comparible salaries.2. If the stress on on cognitive skills is problematic, why would such professional status be required anyways. He points out the importance of behavioral/character training but rules out the use of less educated adults in these communities to impart that training.I believe that they will be most effective in training and disciplining the children than a middle class college grad. Moreover, they will provide the intensive coverage needed at the lowest cost.Have the high priced professionals train the aides from the area and then send them to the day-care and other preschool programs to do the early childhood education. In conclusion, the non-sequitars involved in the proposed soluctions do not invalidate the objective summaries of the research and the entirely valid objections to standardized testing as enshrined in the NCLB.I would certainly recommend it for a critical understanding of the issue. Then go to Valerie Lee and Ted Sizer for better solutions.

2-0 out of 5 stars ASK A SILLY QUESTION ...
Richard Rothstein is no more qualified to advise on education than the new governor of California(who is a body-builder).Theobjective of education is economic self-sufficiency.Getting ahead in life requires connections, not "knowledge."American blacks are denied connections. We allknow why and how.The black-white gap which Rothstein writes aboutis notinformation but access.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and informative depiction of Asian Americans
As an international Asian student majoring in Clinical Psychology, Sue's understanding of and advice for the Asian American clientele in relation to intrapsychic, interpsychic, and sociopolitical issues resonate accurately with my limited personal and clinical experiences.
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
Well written, covers a broad range of ideas and topics. An excellent resource for Multicultural Therapy. The language is simple yet comprehensive, easy to read but informative.
2-0 out of 5 stars They meant well
It is sad that the book used by so many schools to introduce therapists to the subject of cultural diversity is a collection of generalized stereotypes. The first few chapters are dedicated to showing white people how wrong, misguided, and privileged they are. They group all white people into one defined category of unintentionally delusional racists. Their argument is that psychotherapy, in its current state, works for white people and not other minorities.Though, in some aspects, this may be true, their tone implies that this is because the creators were racist. What the Sues fail to point out is that the creators were not necessarily racist, they were white, they knew about white culture, and developed theories based on their experiences. It is my hope that the Sues will change the tone of their book before its next printing as it can turn away people who do not feel like defending themselves against their stereotypes. If you have not been assigned this book for a class, you may be better off reading something else until the Sues are able to let go of their own racist biases. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and timely
I've been staring at a copy of Thomas Friedman's 'From Beirut to Jerusalem' on my shelf for nearly a year now, meaning to read it but always drawn to something else. Finally, recent events demanded that I learn more and I finally pulled it down, dusted it off, and read it.I'm so glad I did, especially now.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pertinent Then and Pertinent Now
Not in the "must read " class, but a good informative personal account of Thomas Freidman, the New York Times middle east journalist. The book contains his observances of the factional fighting that took place in Beirut and the larger Lebanon, Israel conflict in the 1980s.Thebook has interesting observances of these complicated situations. This is a good book for the 21st century where it appears Lebanon is again descending into chaos, and Israel has once again tried the tactic of invading southern Lebanon.Freidman does a good job making a chaotic situation interesting while providing new insights.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for Citizens of the World at the Beginning of the 21st Century
I have not yet completed From Beirut to Jerusalem, but I have been fascinated by every word.Mr. Friedman's intellectual approach to the every-day life, religions and politics of the Middle East is written in an easily understandable, conversational manner. He asks questions, finds a range of answers from varied sources, and shares his conclusions in a non-judgmental way.Mr. Friedman's in-depth study of the interplay of religions and politics in the Middle East has clarified many questions I had and has validated some of my thoughts. I better understand what is happening in the Middle East and am rethinking my own political views on today's events. ... Read more

This is an excellent book for someone who is learning about diversity. This book isn't 100% perfect but it's a start for someone to learn about diversity in society. The author tried to address each group without bias (as much as possible).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the best
This is the kind of writing/reflecting many people do while travelling and is not a "how to" type of travel guide.I've recommended this book to several thoughtful people, given it to many thoughtful teens as they begin to self-discover, and re-read the book twice.VERY nice writing, good thoughts, great ideas about humans.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Songlines
As i never wanted to go to Australia, i have to say that after reading this book i have not changed my mind, but it is not a point. It is not a book about traveling in Australia. It is more a book about walking, for example. As i like walking, i have found in this book so many great examples of what the walking is about, it is not just moving from one point on the Earth to another, it is also philosophy. And so on...this book is highly recommended for those who knows what the word "travel" means. In present time many people travel, but just a few ones deserve to be called "traveller". Bruce Chatwin is among them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read before you go!
I wish I had read this book prior to our traveling to Australia.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very biased against "Whites"
It is a shame to think that some teachers are using this as their only text.As such, it gives a totally distorted view of so-called "Anglos" and "Whites" in America. For instance, in the chapters on American Indians, the Spanish depravity visited on the indigenous peoples in what is now the American west and southwest isn't even mentioned. The authors assertions of peaceful assimilation by the Spanish of the indigenous peoples (p. 199) is irresponsible and absurd. But this book is sure to please the America-hating politically correct crowd that equates white European Americans with Satan.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Interethnic Relations In America" forces me think
Early this Spring I decided to take on the task ofan Honors Intercultural Studies course at De Anza College. Although I had taken many classes of the same genre, little could have prepared me for the mass ofknowledge that I would obtain. Through reading an average of 60-80 pages of"Interethnic Relations in America" each week, I have been able togain not only a cultural perspective, but a sociological and historical onetoo! I have found that although it is challenging because it contains SOmuch information, that it reigns as a great work because it is seeminglynon-biased, very modern, and well written. I would definetly reccommendthis book to people of all ages, races, ethnicities, regardless of their"cultural baggage." I have been forced to think, and thus I feelcompelled to share my experinces with others. This book can truly changeyour life in many ways! Not to mention that my professor has used it atboth Stanford and Berkeley in the past! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars How a book can create a conflict, Said and his gross mistrepretations
Edward Said, created a proble and made a career of the Israel Palestine Conflict, and conviently died before he could also resolve the death and destruction he brought to the Arab Palestinians. He was a one man destruction derby under the guise of poetry, linguistics and hate and he helped stir up anti Israel and anti Jewish hatred on every University he spoke at. Hopefully, this "vintage" book will become no longer relevant, ans disappear.

1-0 out of 5 stars Irresponsible and Lacking Rigor
Said's book has, sadly, been hugely influential on thousands of university students, their professors, and many living in the islamic world. His book should not be read without concurrently reading Ibn Warraq's critique _Defending the West: A Critique of Edward Said's Orientalism_.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breaking stereotypes
Seemingly unable to come to terms with the Muslim world, Orientalism is as timely to read today as it was when it was first published in 1978.Edward Said offered a much needed examination of many of the texts that had come to represent the corpus of "Orientalism" in Western Humanities classes. He went back to the late 18th and early 19th century to set the basis for this new field of study that emerged from the Napoleonic invasion of Egypt. What began as an investigation of the monuments of the Near East soon developed into a study of the people, their culture and their religions. The only problem was that these studies treated the "Orientals" like anthropological specimens, never getting beyond general categories and treating Islam like it was some perversion of Christianity, inspired by an anarchist in robes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Valuable? - Perhaps for somebody who has never had a real eye for other cultures
Hofstede's work was and is not really helpful; perhaps fascinating for those who deal with the issues from the comfortable space of their warm home of office in a western country.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very valueable, if taken as Hofstede has meant it
Although many comments have already been accumulated let me add something, since some of the reviews tend to get out of focus. Hofstede never claimed to have studied cultures in general, he studied effects of culture on work-related values. For this topic his work is still the standard. The starting point is like this: a large company like IBM tries to establish a strong corporate identity shared among all of its worldwide employees ("We are IBM" kind of thing). However, if you ask them a couple of questions about their work-related values, they answer differently. Turns out, the differences can be explained to some degree by the employee's country-of-origin, that is his or her culture. Hofstede then goes on and tries to find dimensions in order to describe the differences between cultures, - and it has to be said again and again - dimensions for "work-related values" and not for culture in general! This observation was and is tremendously important for multinational companies. It means that we are still influenced even when we work at a multinational firm by our cultural traditions and that this cannot easily be exchanged by the company's culture. Of course if you are more interested in other aspects of culture, than Hofstede's books might not the prime choice for you to study.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Train Wreck
Reading the previous reviews, several things are evident. The West Palm Beach review is nothing more than an ad hominen attack on a previous review.Furthermore, the Palm Beach reviewer mistakes sticking to the subject with "we're the only game in town" argument/counterargument assertion. It is very easy to ignore Hofstede's work completely, start from zero and perform a real cross cultural analysis, 2-3 three countries at a time, starting IN the native language and then making a comparison that speaks in its own voice. This is NOT the same as Hofstede's doing the surveys in English and then translating them twice. The Palm Beach reviewer also falls into the argumentum ad ignorantium fallacy (must be true because it hasn't been proven false) by saying "I mean that no reputable research on cultural values will fail to include Hofstede's work because it has been so influential" as well as appeal to celebrity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected
This was among the 7 pieces of source material on my most recent exam.It was better than I expected.I looked at it from the perspective that I should use a person's culture to my advantage. With a familiarity of culture specific issues, I can make myself a more effective police officer.I found the author's writing to be of high quality, but book did not make me more culturally diverse. If you are looking for a book that teaches you how to be a police officer, this is not it.If you are looking for a book that might explain why the Iranian guy got mad at you last week, this is the right one.

The worse book I have ever read. This book is filled with Liberal jibberish and worthless information that the authors try to pass off as fact. This 500+ page masterpiece is loaded with unfactual opinions from people who know absolutely nothing about Police work. It could have been explained in 50 or less pages.Don't waist your money!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced and Necessary
This book is an important contribution to policing at multiple levels. It discusses ethnic and minority groups in a respectful manner, attempting to avoid stereotypes. It provides the police officer with insight into and strategies for policing a multicultural society. At no point does it even slightly suggest that law enforcement should use culture or race as an excuse to not enforce the law.The introductory chapter provides a framework for understanding the phenomenon of immigration in the U.S., and connects 21st century demographics to the need for the book itself. The authors provide useful information on topics such as community policing, racial profiling, and hate crimes. It is absolutely ridiculous to refer to this book as apologetic or soft on crime. If police officers are not ready for this book, then they should get out of policing. This book is one of the best that I have seen for law enforcement professionals related to the multicultural society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Every White American Should Read This Book!
I absolutely loved the insight of this author. Even if you don't agree with every single point, you will definitely think and question your previous perspective on how you view race. That is what good writing does. From a white person's perspective and experiences, the author exposes the myth of "color-blindness" in America. To be clear, this book has absolutely nothing to do with promoting white "guilt" (as a previous reviewer falsely claimed), but has its focus squarely on white "responsibility" that is wed to the bride that is "white privilege". In fact, white "guilt" is clearly shunned upon.
1-0 out of 5 stars Memoirs for his family on some mediocre lived life
The style of the author is like listening to a person that likes to talk about himself all the time. Kinda reminds me of the 1980 movie "Airplane" when the ex-fighter pilot tells the story of his life to the passengers; they end their lives in different ways after having to hear him...
5-0 out of 5 stars Silent Discrimination
Racial discrimination has always been a problem in our society.Decades ago people of color were seen as incompetent people and became slaves to the white people. But over the years as a society we have come to denounce discrimination based upon color and tried to make everyone equal. However, as much as we may like to believe that our society has come to see everyone as equal, it has not.In Tim Wise book "White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son" he shows us how color the of someones skin leads to privilege or discrimination.

5-0 out of 5 stars eye-opening
A very well-written book.MacDonald does an excellent job in revealing how Jewish society is incompatible with Western Civilization and why Jews as a social entity have attacked and are in the process of destroying Western society, its morals and culture.Every person of European descent should read this book to realize why are society is slowly evolving into a society which is contrary to what is healthy, vibrant and sustaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumb's down.
I hope that Gentiles do not read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Even-handed treatment of a taboo subject
I read this text at the urging of a friend who is a university professor and former practicing attorney. My academic background includes graduate studies at an Ivy League organizational psychology program.I hold two graduate degrees with nearly 100 graduate credits in management science and decision theory as applied to individuals and organizations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book if your interested
This book is great if you're interested in how Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. came into existence, especially if you are interested in becoming apart of the organization. Another good book is The Divine Nine. Many people believe that there is animosity between DST and AKA because of the creation of DST. That is not so, and if you read this book you will find this to be true. Also, to dispel the complexion/color myth, if you look at the founders of both organizations you will see various, beautiful shades of brown, ranging from tan to sepia. There are pictures in The Divine Nine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Account of the History of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
The first time I read this book was Sophomore year of college at Clark Atlanta University.Once I began reading this book I realized that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an excellent example of what a sorority should be. The foresight of the founders to chart their own course and to consistently strive for excellence shines through even in the modern day activities of the sorority.Paula Giddings put her heart and soul into this book and it is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about sisterhood at its best.Although I am not a member, I will certainly make Delta Sigma Theta my first and only choice.Kudos to Ms. Giddings for a job well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars College students do make change in their communities and the country
I was never a Greek, but I read this book because I am familiar with Delta Sigma Theta from their activities at my alma mater, and have enjoyed Paula Giddings's other research about black women's history. Unsurprisingly, I also enjoyed this book. It explains how Delta Sigma Theta provided a critical organizing space for collegiate black women in an era trying to make them choose between the identities and at a time when their being in college itself was a rarity.
