2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the uninitiated
I am currently taking an undergraduate course on Cather, and I hoped that this book would provide some insight into a side of her not covered in the course. However, I found the book full of jargon which rendered itincomprehensible to me. Perhaps if you are already initiated into the worldof "queer studies" you will find it interesting, but I don'trecommend it for a casual reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daring and Provocative
Lindemann's deft analysis of Cather and her "queer" sensibilities is a refreshing change of pace from the boring, disconnected aesthetic-based criticism that has dominated Cather studies for some timenow. Written in a delightfully engaging prose style, _Willa Cather:Queering America_ provides us with insight into the next phase of Catherscholarship that dares to situate the author within the sexual-politicalenvironment of the early twentieth century. A must for queer and gay andlesbian Americanists, as well as anyone interested in American literaryhistory and the traditions that frame such a field. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Silenced Feminists Trapped in the Attic?"
Caminero-Santangelo challenges the long-held feminist belief that historically women have utilized insanity as a means of cultural resistance. The book both analyzes contemporary theory on the issue -including the emphasis French feminists have placed on the linguisticconstruction of the "feminine" voice and its association withmadness - and historical studies on female insanity. Through a closereading of such books as "The Bell Jar," "Girl,Interrupted," and "The Bluest Eye," she asserts that womentextually represent insanity as a "loss of voice," rather than aliberatory experience. Further, she demonstrates that historians andtheorists have overlooked patients' choices where they conflict with the"madness as feminism" position - particularly in cases wherepatients view psychiatrists or psychiatric treatment favourably. This bookdoes much to challenge our assumptions about female insanity andperceptions of psychiatric practice. While one might dispute the claim thatinsane women *cannot* have a voice, Caminero-Santangelo does demonstratethe dangers inherent in the presumption that insanity was a means topersonal power. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars groundbreaking work
This text is a wonderful read for anyone invested in the intellectual pursuit of scholarship and feminism. Obviously, this type of important work is upsetting to readers who do not like their patriarchal notions of "feminism" and the constructed body of the young and adult woman in today's culture questioned or problematized.

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS is feminism???
Look, I'm a man, so I might have a skewed view of what "feminism" is and is not. But Ms. Trites's view of what constitutes "true feminist literature" with its emhasis on communication, sharing and self-improvement over effective female heroes sounds, to this White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Male at least, a LOT like the "finer qualities of women" extolled by Victorian lady novelists. It has little, if any, bearing on the passionately activist and physically and morally courageous teenage girls and twentysomething women of my experience - or of the older women (one of whom I'm married to) who fought long and hard so someone like Ms. Trites could call herself a "feminist".5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Trites' book is a must read for college students, teachers, parents, everyone...Her language is very accessible.I used this book as the main source for my senior thesis, and found it to be extremely helpful as wellas enlightening. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How did the Middle English see gender?
An extended excursion into Middle English history. The authors scrutinise contemporary texts and ballads to parse out the expected roles of men and women. More to the point, they focus on how gender roles were debated at that time, as contrasted to perhaps how we might see these now. Which may be why the period they survey starts at 1500. Roughly when printed material starts appearing on the scene. So that now we have books emerging as a mass medium. Leaving us material to study.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars useful intro to personal criticism
The first chapter of this book, "Getting Personal: Autobiography as Cultural Criticism" is worth the whole book. This is a manifesto for personal criticism, that both gives an overview of the kinds of writing that can be called personal criticism and the problematics of the concept. Some feminist theory is densely theoretical, while other feminists argue that we must "turn our back on theory". Miller disagrees with the latter, while arguing for a personally grounded criticism that is not necessarily overtly autobiographical but that is always *intense*. I also found this chapter valuable in finding other examples of personal criticism as well as references to other discussions of this method.4-0 out of 5 stars useful intro to personal criticism
