5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done
The author not only argues for feminism, but she does so in a unique manner, and innovative approach by arguing for feminism across borders. She compares and defines literary and national borders. This book is extremely thorough on all aspects of Chicana feminist writing available, by engaging historical theories as well as contemporary notions. To really grasp the experience, the author has certainly covered her basis in terms of depth, substance, truth and validity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb criticism.
This important study is highly astute in its analysis--and very accessible.Ratcliffe is a first-rate thinker and writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
Three great geniuses are presented here. Where would we be without the unbelievably courageous Mary Daly? And Virginia Woolf is still an important early voice, especially as presented by Jane Marcus and other brilliantradicals. As for Rich, is there a more brilliant writer in"America" today? I think not.

5-0 out of 5 stars magnificent
This book dares to include three of the very greatest writers of the century. Mary Daly is the incredibly courageous voice of contemporary radical feminism, Woolf is still valuable for her essays, and Adrienne Rich is a truly visionary poet who has changed the way contemporary discourse isconducted. A wonderful book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New Elements on Mistral's Life and Beliefs.
Gabriela Mistral, private and public. There's been much debate about the subject but Fiol-Matta takes it further and amplifies it. In the book, she touches on Mistral's possible Lesbianism or in a White-Race supremacy belief before turning into the defender of Native Americans and Mestizos. She also talks about the use of pictures and other visual elements to create Mistral's image. The book is not easy to read, but brings new aspects on Mistral's life to counterback her "Mythical" and "Sanctified" Image. And as the author says, it is an opportunity to re-read the author's work, one of Latin America's Finest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gabriela unveiled
A work of scholarship accessible to all. It reads like a novel. Queer Mother is fresh, creative and audacious in its analysis of Gabriela Mistral's historical importance. It removes the veil from Gabriela and gives her back to her Latin American public. This time she is real, human and possibly gay.I loved Ines Munoz's letters to Gabriela...juicy stuff! ... Read more

Editorial Review

One dare not even call it seminal, yet in this ground-breaking work, English novelist and historian Marina Warner casts herself as the female Joseph Campbell in a fascinating and lively book that opens with the observation that "storytelling makes women thrive -- and not exclusively women," and then lifts the veil on both tellers and tales ranging from Sibyl to the late, great Angela Carter, from Lot's daughters to Disney's "Little Mermaid." She finds a not-so-hidden history of women, sex, power, fear -- and even healing -- lurking therein. An eye-opening reworking of our common myth pool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites
I read this book back in high school when I was just starting to get interested in fairy tale analysis. It's very indepth, well-written, and enjoyable. It's easy to understand and straightforward but offers so much information you're bound to learn something new. I highly recommend From the Beast to the Blonde to anyone that loves fairy tales or mythology.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is witchcraft in your voice ...
Marina Warner writes absolutely beautiful prose, which alone is worth the price of this book. She is ... well, "enchanting" on the subject of myth as social commentary and psychological revelation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Marina Warner's _From the Beast to the Blonde_ is a wonderful and engaging work concerning the cultural history of fairy tales.Warner explores the "stock characters" and stories of traditional tales, and in the process creates an excellent work of scholarship and criticism in an area of literature that has been relegated to the nursery, but didn't start there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars debunking the assumptions of universal experience
this book is a must have if you study any form of feminist fiction.judith fetterly breaks down how women portrayed in well known works in the western canon are seen as sexless shrews, hysterics, man-hating, and oversexed lunatics to name a few --but are tolerated or fetishized for their subservient placement in the system of male power. As long as they do nothing to challenge the power construct, and actually support it, they are portayed in a half cruel light and simulataneously worshipped as well. They don't buck the power and if they do they pay for it and are blamed any breakdowns in the natural systems of order as well.it will make you burn, burn, burn and that defiant, healthy way.and in that bad, bad, bad, way. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection.
I bought this book hoping to find an essay or two for a college class I'm teaching. The book was so fascinating, I'm going to end up using more of it than I thought. Originally, I was going to photocopy the essays, now I'm just going to have my students buy the book. I would have given it 5 stars except for the "considerable repetition" mentioned above. What is strongest about this book is the different perspectives that it employs. ... Read more
