4-0 out of 5 stars An eye opening analysis of Israeli female authored fiction
An Associate Professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at NYU, Feldman has written an eye-opening comparative analysis that will cause you to never read a book authored by a woman the same way again. I am not used to reading literary or gender theory, but this provided an excellentintroduction, as well as providing a synopsis of the feminist works ofVirginia Woolf and Simone Beauvoir. As Feldman's book taught me, you rarelysaw Israeli women authors prior to 1980. It was the time of social realismliterature, stories of "WE" the nation builders. But in 1997,four of Israel's best seller's were authored by religious women. Prior tothe Yom Kippur War, Israeli women, like Leah Goldberg, wrote poetry; andmen wrote fiction. For all the lip service that was paid to the new Hebrewsocialist culture of the pioneers and the kibbutz, much of it was lipservice when it came to gender roles. But since 1980, women have publishedhistorical fiction, biography, and mystery (Batya Gur) successfully inIsrael. Many have them have projected contemporary concerns over the roleof women in Israeli society onto their heroines from the pre-State period.Feldman focuses on five women authors: Amalia Kahana Carmon (Chapter 3),Shulamith Hareven (Chapter 5 and 6.3), Netiva Ben Yehuda (chapter 7), RuthAlmog (Chapter 8), and Shulamit Lapid (Chapter 1). I was captivated by theanalysis of Lapid's "GEI ONI", a fictional story about thefounding of Rosh Pinna (its original name was a Hebrew takeoff on the nameof the Arab village). Was it a best seller in Israel because it dared towrite about a fictional pioneering Woman of the first Aliyah? (Why do weonly hear about the male pioneers?) Long story, short... Feldman shows therichness and subtleties of Israeli women's fiction as she explores thethemes of gender and nation, as well as the (non)representation of the"New Hebrew Woman" in the works of these five authors who are the"foremothers" of the contemporary boom in Israeli Women'sfiction. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective Of Science Fiction
"The Battle of the Sexes in Science Fiction" by Justine Larbalestier is the fourth book in the Early Classics of Science Fiction series from Wesleyan University Press, and is unlike any of the other books in the series up to this point. The previous books in the series included whole works of science fiction along with supplementary material. This book is a study of the history of science fiction with respect to women as fans and authors.
5-0 out of 5 stars fun facts to know and tell
A witty and informative book.Larbalestier's research is as deep as it is provocative. This book is a fascinating look back and Larbalestier's clean, clear prose and delightful details make it a very happy reading experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars best book on feminist sf ever
The book is not only well researched and insightful it's also amusing and sometimes moving. Not what you'd expect from an academic book. Larbalestier goes back to primary sources looking at - among other things - letters to science fiction magazines from the 1920s. Some are screamingly funny, some are moving - people in dust bowl towns writing about being transported to other planets by the stories. She uses material it's very difficult to get hold of opening up the field of science fiction so that it is richer and larger than you could have imagined. Guess what? Women have always been part of sf. ... Read more
