4-0 out of 5 stars An exegetically solid book
I read this book as part of a Bible study and found it to be a very helpful resource.Grenz and Kjesbo go into thorough detail looking at the "problem texts" facing women in ministry today, keeping a very solid, honest exegesis of the Word of God.Even as both authors are unapologetic about subscribing to an egalitarian view of women in ministry (believing that women should be allowed to participate in ministry without imposing constraints beyond what is expected of their male co-laborers), both the egalitarian and complementarian views receive a fair and respectful assessment based on an honest reading of scripture.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Respectful, Convincing Treatment of the Subject
"Historical, biblical, and theological considerations", writes Stanley J. Grenz "converge not only in allowing, but also in insisting, that women serve as full partners with men" in the work of the Christian church. His book (coauthored with Denise Muir Kjesbo), Women in the Church: A Biblical Theology of Women in Ministry is one of the best- perhaps THE best treatment I've ever read on the subject of women's roles in churches, marriage, and family. 5-0 out of 5 stars Christians and non-Christians must read

4-0 out of 5 stars Balanced and Fair
No matter what your view is on this subject, you will enjoy seeing this issue from all sides. Each of the four commonly held views of women in ministry are represented, from very conservative to very egalitarian. The facts are laid out for each view, and then other scholars react and respond to each view.It works and is easy reading. This book provides valuable insight on this topic and is worth reading.B4-0 out of 5 stars Balanced Interaction reveals the options
This is an excellent introduction to the theological question of a woman'srole in the church. This unique book allows evangelical Christian authors, each of whom grounds their opinion in Biblical text, to speak for theirposition. It presents selections from the spectrum of opinions.Thisunusual feature allows the reader to evaluate the Biblical options forthemselves. While no conclusion can ultimately be reached from this bookalone, it permits one to begin to address the question in a Biblicalmanner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Women's ministry how-to help
I found this book incredibly valueable in beginning an effective and enjoyable women's ministry at our church! Not only are there examples of flyers, surveys and information sheets, there are ideas for fellowships, the best time to have them and even how to gather ideas from the ladies at your church. I have put many of their ideas to work and with great success. There are so many good suggestions that your imagination is bound to be sparked and you will soon have a thriving ladies ministry of your own!

4-0 out of 5 stars Melissa Schweihofer
I feel the book has a lot to give. The Heart to Heart Ministry was wonderful. I feel you can apply a lot of the information in the book. The Day Care section should have been more in line of helping not talking about things women already fear.My Church did use the surveys and they were a great sucess. Women need to apply things in the book that will help them grow and leave those things that is not for them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Organized, Useful, butthe book prefer's stay-at home mom's
I liked the book for its organization, and practical way it presented all the areas of Women's Ministry, etc.But I was a little put off by the focused preference for women to be stay-at home moms, almost as if it were a sin to work outside the home, which it isn't.Also the book had a whole appendix on how day care for children is bad -- which was written by a man. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly & Representative of the Silent Majority of Muslims
This is a fabulous book!It illustrates the views of millions of Muslims that are never covered in the media or even by academicians. The "Orientalist" view of Islam has been promoted with tiresome frequency in the media and in scholarship as though it represents all of Islam -- it doesn't.This book gives a modern interpretation of Islam (that has nothing to do with terrorism) in a series of a short essays by Muslims and non-Muslims.These are scholarly essays -- not just the unreasoned opinions of journalists who have been cashing in on 9/11 to spin out their own books as fast as they can -- but liberal interpretations of Islam based on original Islamic texts, by renowned academicians. The interpretations of Islam in this book, though prevalent throughout the Islamic world, are usually neglected in the spotlight, eclipsed by juicier portrayals of extremists as representative of all Islam.Even when liberal Islam IS considered by academicians, they tend to put it into a Western framework: that is, with the attitude that in order for Muslims to become modern, they must abandon Islamic tradition altogether. In this book, we are shown how Islam itself can be modern, regardless of what Western tradition is doing. Thanks to Kurzman, these modern, majority interpretations receive attention here, and show us that Islam is a flexible, modern, equitable religion -- one advocating religious tolerance, women's rights, and democracy --and practiced peacefully by millions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Liberal Islam: A Sourcebook.
Liberal Islam? The editor pre-empts the skepticism in his very first sentence, noting that this "may sound like a contradiction in terms."But, he goes on knowledgeably to show, such a phenomenon does actually exist, even if it is, in his terms, a "neglected tradition" whose power peaked before 1920 and whose exponents have since then been disproportionately the victims of violence. The first selections in this anthology date from the 1920s but the great majority (20 out of 32) of selections date since 1980. Kurzman does an exemplary job of selection-the excerpts are both interesting and important-and of finding writings from across the Muslim world, not just the Middle East.Authors include both those who are the household names of Islamic thinkers (Fazlur Rahman, Mahmoud Mohamed Taha) and others who are deeply obscure (Rusmir Mahmutcehajic, Ali Bulaç).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best available on the subject
Too many women struggle with this question and too many men and women have upheld the view that women should not be leaders. Cunningham and Hamilton probe this question with contemporary experience, historical insight, and biblical orthodoxy. This is simply the best there is on the subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why Not Women: A Biblical Study of Women in Missions, Ministry, and Leadership
As with most YWAM books this is GREAT!As a YWAM'ER for 21 years I recommend reading this and other books dispite what heitland says, the theology is terrific! I fgound it very clear, practical, and livable as well as true to the scriptures! So, with this book, it meets the Biblical criteria for teaching truth and making women free from domination, just as Jesus did with the woman taken in adultry - He did not go soft on sin but neither did He stone her. It is consistant with the words of Moses, "Let my people go!"Truely it shows that in Christ there is "neither male nor female".

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the essence of this proud, passionate, and pious woman
Confronted By God: The Essential Verna Dozier by co-editors Cynthia L. Shattuck & Fredrica Harris Thompsett is a carefully selected assembly of the writings of Verna Dozier, a Christian African-American woman dedicated to speaking out for the sake of the poor, dedicating herself to spreading the idea of equality as God's great dream. Confronted By God captures the essence of this proud, passionate, and pious woman, and invokes both compassion and contemplation at length in the reader. "Has anyone called you a fanatic lately? And if they did, was it because you were so set on establishing a morality for someone else, or because you were intent on a private piety, or because you were willing to risk every known security that someone else might have a richer life?" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very courageous
This book has admittedly been promoted by the famous 2002-movie 'The Magdalene Sisters'. However, there inevitably exists a big difference in the way both book and movie treat this extremely sensitive subject. For this reason it's a big mistake to see the book as an extension of the movie.
2-0 out of 5 stars Boring, mistitled.
After seeing, and enjoying the film "The Magdalen Sisters" I wanted to find more factual information about the subject. This was the only book available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feminist Spirituality at its finest!
I was introduced to this book in a feminist spirituality class, taught by a methodist (woman) minister. This and its sequel, Weaving the Visions, helped change my spiritual life. It affirmed the feminine face of God for me, and it did help me to know there are others out there seeking the Femininity of God. That we all have our own, bizarre path to the Divine One; be it one sex or another. This book opens up to a world of feminist thought and ritual; how different feminists, scholars and religious leaders experience divinity and come to terms with it. There are Christians, Jews and Pagans here. An excerpt from "The Color Purple" which Christ seems to favor in other publications. Truly a wonderful work of art for women. A feminist must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for those interested in feminist studies!
This book and its successor, Weaving the Visions, are the keystones of my library of feminist religious studies. The contributors expose us to feminist critiques of religion from many perspectives and backgrounds. This book is an uplifting source of inspiration for men and women alike. At the same time, it remains a pinnacle of scholarship in its field.Iwould highly recommend it to anyone with even a remote interest in feministreligious thought! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength FOR The Struggle
Buy this book for Chapter Three alone, but be sure to read the other words of wisdom. Yes, as the previous reviewer said, it is chocked full of Biblical references but it is not just written for religious leaders. It can be applied to all aspects of leadership and inspires-in the words of the author-"leaders who happen to be women" to stand strong against the stigma of "stepping out of place" into positions of power and authority. And while the focus is on women's leadership, the fellas can get a few shots of leadership adrenaline from this work also. I have had the honor and pleasure of hearing Bishop Mackenzie speak. Her writing is as powerful as her oratory skills. She has written the spiritual pep talk we all need. She could have easily called the book Strength FOR The Struggle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and funny
these women are very appealing in their ability to be gracious and see the goodness of God in difficult and even tragic situations. i set out to read one short story each night and, without fail, read three or four before i forced myself to put the book down and go to sleep! i found the book to be a wonderful way to end the day and be reminded of the beauty of God in the simple and the complex. the stories are insightful, inspirational, and often very funny. one of the most impressive aspects of the book was the expression of the ability to overcome devastating circumstances and not only trust God but trust Him enough to share Him with others. this book would make a great gift for the women in your life.

This is a "warm and fuzzy" book.It doesn't get in your face or make you nervous. There are challenges, but so gently delivered you might not even notice. However, the gentle approach does nothing to lessen the impact of the truth, so joyfully shared, that God loves us forever, for always and no matter what. This is a great summer beach read or a gift to give to a friend who needs to know how much God loves them. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read, but take with a grain of salt.
This book is quite informative in addressing many different Goddess stories and legends from many different cultures in a brief, fun-to-read format but the historical information the author provides seems rather vague and incomplete. It proves to be an entertaining indulgence, nonetheless. However, if you want to address the worship of the Goddess in a more practical and educational manner, I would suggest looking elsewhere. There is some good advice here for beginners and those who wish to use the book as a quick-reference guide or as a possible overview, but I wouldn't use this book for any in-depth studies of the craft. Also, the repetitive spelling errors can become quite annoying.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Goddess in all her aspects explained
Ms. Conway is one of my favorite authors and with this book she really hits home. She expains the three aspects of the triple Goddess in detail, complete with myths and lore. The untrue myth that the dark goddess is all about gloom and doom is completely shattered in the section on the Crone. The Goddess is to be respected in all her aspects and is essential to birth, death and rebirth. This book also contains meditations to meet with and understand all three of the Sacred Mother's faces. A definite keep in my library!

3-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive collection of goddess myths
This book brings togeather all sorts of goddess myths and Conway has sectioned them into catagories.A great read for understanding the relationship of the goddesses in many diffrent patheons. However the guieded meditations in the back are a little diffrent.I would seggest reading other books on goddess worship before you choose this form of connection. ...
