5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Connection
If you've ever thought about or wonderedhow closely connected today's women are the Bibical women, then this is the book for you.Tastefully presented, thought provoking, and easily understood by any woman of today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Time Experience
This was my first experience with Amazon. The service was impeccable, I received the books even sooner than they told me which was great as I needed them for a Bible Study class I was attending. The books were in excellent condition and based on this experience I will definitely make future purchases through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just A Sister Away... My sister
Author Renita J. Weems appeared to be playing the "Devil's Advocate" when she used familiar lessons from the Bible like Abraham and Sarah, Naomi and Ruth, Martha and Mary, Jephthah's Daughter and the Mourning Women and so on. But what is so awesome about "Just A Sister Away" is we were able to take a peek into the minds and hearts of the women who were not considered to be "chosen" of God and those who were placed in a predicament that was not of their doing, like Hagar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on the disagreements of the early church
Brock argues that the Bible and other early Christian texts reveal an apparent struggle between two different communities in the early church, one centered around Peter and the other around Mary Magdalene. The Petrine group eventually won out, eventually becoming the male-dominated hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church. This victory was strong enough so that Magdalene references were minimized in much of the Bible, though found among many non-canonical texts, including obviously the Gospel of Mary Magdalene.
5-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful treatment of a complicated subject
Magdalene.org review:Ann Graham Brock has masterfully and succinctly stated a problem that has been bothering me for a very long time.In several early Christian texts that feature Mary Magdalene, she faces opposition by Peter, leaving the reader with the impression that there was some rivalry between the two.The apparent conflict was vague and unsettling, and not being a Biblical scholar, I didn't know what to do with it.5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Magdalene Revisited...this time seriously
This book, originally a doctoral dissertation, provides readers with what appears to be a very careful comparative analysis of the gospels and early Christian texts on the pivotal question of the apostolic status of Mary Magdalene.I hedge with the phrase "what appears to be" simply because my ability to judge a book with references to scholarship that includes Harnack, countless foreign languages, Greek and Egyptian sources is limited. But don't let the scholarship deter you; this is a very readable book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting in its scope, but not very thorough
Weaver's work is certainly effective at focusing somewhat unique perspectives towards challenging the currently in vogue anselmian satisfaction theories of atonement. He certainly hits his mark of highlighting the degree to which satisfaction theories are tied to a particular cultural perspective and the particular time and position of the church in which they were formulated.
5-0 out of 5 stars How does Jesus save?
According to Weaver, Jesus saves by living under the evil systems and structures of power, exposing their true nature in his death, and overcoming them in resurrection. In this way, God is not demanding or perpetrating violence and is on the side of the oppressed. This atonement theory stands in distinction from Anselm's articulation of the atonement in which Jesus dies as a punishment for all sin or a payment to God.It is also in opposition to Abelard's understanding that Jesus shows us God's love and the best way to live.To make his case, Weaver relies heavily on theology from groups who speak from the margins of society. It is clear that the goal is to articulate an understanding of God's action in the life of Christ that stands opposed to violence.Read this book if you have ever had the feeling that in Christ God did more than give you an example of how to live or if you have suspected that God didn't have to see blood to feel better about you.

5-0 out of 5 stars atonement theology for the oppressed
Weaver's book does a great job of addressing the question of, who does our theology hurt? The introduction to this book was enlightening and especially pertinent to setting up this question. The focus on an atonement theology that contributes to the "machine" of the world (violence, racism, patriarchy, etc.)is one that he correctly takes dead aim at. While we realize this oppression in religion, culture, and education, our theology is often lacking in this same awareness. Comparing where mennonite theology should be in relation to women's and black theology is a project that is vital. A good book that really challenges the theological conventions that we take for granted ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Scripture commentary
Sandra Schneiders is a dynamic teacher as well as being a gifted Biblical theologian and writer. Her refreshing commentary on the Gospel of John helps us see what very few male theologians have been able or willing to see. Her insights are backed up by splendid research and intelligent thought. Her exploration of the Samaritan Woman, for example , in the 4th chapter of John allow us to peer deeply into the real meaning of the text. This is not about Jesus' encounter with one woman. It is about the Johannine community whose members were struggling with their life situation, the tensions over roles for women and men , the meaning of authority in the new dispensation which Jesus has begun. Anyone seriously interested in Scripture should read this fascinating book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Eisegesis
Sister Schneiders shows little interest in the text of the Gospel of Saint John. This is just a pretext to do a predictable feminist trashing of the Catholic Church's traditional interpretation of these texts.Sister looks at the Gospel and ---surprise!--- Jesus turns out to be an ecofeminist of the first order.5-0 out of 5 stars Written that you may believe
The promise of the subtitle of this interpretation of the Gospel according to John speaks eloquently to what Sandra Schneiders has brought to life in this well researched theological work. As she has noted in the text, onedoes not simply read the fourth gospel for it is in interacting with itthat Jesus becomes real. For me the chief benefit of immersing the self inSandra's reflection and research has been a deepened experience of theRisen Christ. I have encountered herein a Jesus who is truly the symbol ofthe God I only begin to know. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight.
She does a great job telling the stories of these women with a feministic view, but notice the tombstones before the chapters. She takes the whole Bible out of context."She was wounded for our transgressions?"Not in my Bible.Great stuff, but the her "tombstones" upset me.

4-0 out of 5 stars "On Telling Sad Stories."

5-0 out of 5 stars In memoriam...
Phillis Trible, a professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, is a noted authority on feminist interpretation and literary analysis of biblical stories of the Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament. From the start of her career, Trible has addressed the topic of how gender and gender/sex relationships are represented in the bible. She looks for biblical themes that have a 'depatriarchalizing principle', which she admits is a relatively minor theme in the biblical texts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unorganized
This book is a series of letters to various women (real or fake?who knows) and has pretty much zero structure to it.I'm pretty sure the whole "letters" idea is just an excuse for not having any kind of organization at all. It's hard to even know where the author is coming from, or going, with whatever she is saying. It's just a bunch of random thoughts thrown together. Not only that, but some of the things this lady says don't really line up with scripture. It's just not a very helpful book at all, and is pretty frustrating to read, and like I said before, not really sound scripturally. It's unorganized and "chatty" and basically depthless, which is a pretty impressive feat to accomplish with a subject as deep as sexual sin.Unless you just want an attractive book with a catchy title, save your money and time and pass this one up.

3-0 out of 5 stars May not suit everyone's needs....
If you are looking for a book to help with a personal situation in your life or in the life of someone you love that is hurting, this is not the first book I would recommend. Each letter is written with a different situation in mind and it is likely that only a few of the letters she writes will touch your personal situation, especially if your situation involves other forms of abuse. If you are looking for a more professional or pyschological approach, you may want to look elsewhere. However, if you want to have a greater understanding of how the sexual addictions of husbands hurt their wives or to let you know you are not alone, this book will help give you that.Kathy, the author, has experienced a great deal of hurt in her own marriage and identifies well with the various situations.Although I didn't always agree with her advice, I admire Kathy's consistency as she points each woman back to the Lord where all Truth and healing ultimately lies.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is written by an uneducated hillbilly
Her advice is eratic and inconsistant.I'm worried that the women who recieved these letters from her will actually continue to remain in horrific degrading marriages.

5-0 out of 5 stars basic text for understanding women in Hebrew Scripture
I first read this book years ago while researching the book of Genesis. I continue to refer it to students and others seeking to understand the Garden of Eden story and other sometimes confused stories from the Hebrew Scriptures involving women. This book should be read by all interesting in allowing the Hebrew Scriptures to speak in their own voices, including the voices of women.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful, bold, and balanced
I first read this book several years ago, when putting together an undergraduate course on ancient and medieval women, and have yet to find anything that comes even close to Meyers' beautifully written and convincing account of ancient Israelite women. The book's greatest strength is the way the author blends archaeological and linguistic information, building a convincing portrait of early women that gets past the wall of later Jewish patriarchal thought.Meyers is by no means a "rabid feminist," but gives a great deal of food for thought about how women "fell out" of the Bible and how cultural expectations have led to centuries of misinterpretation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoying our legacy
Carol Meyers has an easy to read writing style.I read it and wanted more. She adds flesh to the bones of the people of ancient Israel especially the women.I would recommend it to any one but especially women who want a better understanding of our heritage and a clearer understanding of the part our early mothers played. It made me hungry for more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars All men are fallen
Gedge attacks a contemporary stereotype of 19th century America that depicts clergy and women of that time as having mutual ideas and being mutually supportive of each other. This stereotype is evidenced in countless movies and novels set in that era. The authors of such plots probably automatically assumed this, from reading earlier tales.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating but tough reading
If you are fascinated with the goings-on of early Christianity and have been following the growing litany of books - both semi-serious (Holy Blood, Holy Grail) or fanciful (Da Vinci Code) - this book belongs on your reading list.
5-0 out of 5 stars Europe's Hidden Black Madonna Tradition
Christian Europe's ancient artistic interpretations of the Mother of God and the infant Son of God as dark fleshed is vastly too little known. Fortunately, despite the countless loss of such images through the natural ravages of time, church fires, numerous religious wars, revolutions, and also intentional discolorings passed off as "restoration," there are still quite enough of these paintings and statues left to discern that Europe's devotion to a Mary fashioned as a black woman is as ancient as it was widespread. From Spain to Sicily, hundreds of these sacred tools of worship can still be found quietly preserved in churches, shrines, museums and in numerous private collections. In the interest of preserving as much knowledge as possible regarding mankind's most ancient representation of the Deity, Ean Begg has created a priceless volume which dutifully fulfills a most necessary purpose.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Myth Than Fact
I was disappointed that this short book (the text is only about 150 pp) was more about the myths concerning everything from Sumerian goddesses to Marian apparitions than about history and fact concerning the Black Virgin(BV) sites. The author mixes myth and fact so much that is hard to tellwhat he believes to be true and real. There is nothing wrong with exploringmyths, but it makes difficult reading trying to constantly separate themfrom any kernels of fact that may be there.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love these guys!
There's nothing I respect more than Godly men who are not afraid to uplift women and credit us as their equal heirs to God's kingdom. In a new age where most seek equality but some still sadly reach for the 50's, books like Keener's which explore the Biblical definition of women to its very roots are exactly what we need. This is certainly what I needed, anyway; after seeing book after book rip Paul's, Peter's, and several other Biblical men's words out of context to keep women from positions of leadership, this refreshing book is exactly what my tired soul craved. Keener goes straight to the heart of the issue, examining closely many passages in the Bible believed to elevate men over women and his revelations and arguements against mis-interpretation are simply brilliant. You think God meant for women to be followers and that the Bible supports this? I dare you to read this book and feel the same afterwards. Anyone who insists on keeping sexist roles in this day and age is, in my opinion, too concerned with their own insecurity to want to elevate others; I can never understand why some men are so terrified of the idea of women being in equal positions with them and why some women are so frightened at the idea of being credited with more than just house duties. This is perhaps the most thoroughly this topic has ever been explored and I strongly urge Christians of both sexes to read this. It is truly enlightening, especially if you're a woman who wishes to please God, but is afraid He doesn't value you as much because of your gender. Believe me, He does, and sometimes it takes wonderful men like Keener to reveal the truth. Yes, mutual submission IS true and Godly (to the fool who said it's not); this is very apparent in the Bible not just in the passages about marriage, but in teachings of Christian behavior. We are all meant to serve each other in Christ, and only by mutual submission and sacrifice will harmony be achieved. God, thank you for Keener and all those like him. Keener, thank you for this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars scholarly, fair, well-researched book on a touchy subject
Paul, Women & Wives, written by Craig Keener, is a recently published book that deals with Paul's views of women in the ministry and their role in the home. Its intent is to "be useful to the general reader, as well as to the biblical scholar" (p. 1). Keener's sole purpose of this book is to examine four passages from Paul's letters that are frequently used to force the subordination of women. He takes these passages and places them in their contextual setting in order that his readers may better understand their true meaning. Keener is not shy about sharing his perspective on the issue. He is a practicing Christian who strongly feels that women should play an integral role in the church as well as in the home.
