5-0 out of 5 stars Redemption for victims of violence and abuse
Warning: this book is not for the faint of spirit! It is an excellent book that speaks to the souls of women who have experienced violence of any type. (Being a woman, I can't speak for men who have experienced violence. Someone else will have to write that review.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Writing Dealing with Issues of Abuse and Religion
This was a provocative book by two feminist theologians who shared their personal stuggles of early sexual abuse and the effect it had on their adult lives. The honesty of each is gripping. They also make a very credible tie between abuse and violence being tolerated in religious circles because of existing patriarchal beliefs and language in the Bible and religion. It is very insightful and a comfort for women who have felt abused by the Church at worse or not supported in efforts to end abuse in their lives. An eye-opener for those who have yet to be educated about the problem of language in referal to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit -A consolation for those who have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound and Powerful Book
PROVERBS OF ASHES is extraordinary. It is skillfully written, and gives a powerful, and, I believe accurate account of Christianity. The authors' description of the power of grief and how moving through it is transforming is right on.They articulate a theology of a Loving Presence which individuals can provide each other, and humanity can provide for everyone. This provides love and healing. Not the defensive denial that traditional Christianity gives us.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Love and Inestimable Satiety"
Fragmentation and Redemption is a series of seven essays spanning the topics of gender, religious relics, sex, mortality, gender and the miraculous. The essays and the accompanying images are graphic and unforgettable. For example; "The ill clamored for the bathwater of would-be saints to drink or bathe in and preferred it if these would-be saints left skin and lice floating in the water." If you are interested in the cult of relics and medieval mysticism then this book will be a valuable resource. Ecstatic, erotic medieval religious frenzy are chronicled in detail in the highly readable and lively text. I find myself returning to these essays over and over again as I read other, more specific, books on western medieval religious traditions. This is a must have for your reference desk. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Making Scholarship Relevant
This book is a collaborative effort of some faculty and administration from Messiah College. The wife and husband team, the Jacobsens, complied this book, which includes some of their work and the contributions of several others. The structure of the book centers around five chapters written by the Jacobsens. The first four of these chapters have accompanying essays written by others of the group to help illustrate each chapter's theme. Likewise, the prologue and epilogue are from other contributors.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book to read through at a weekly faculty-lunch
The authors are challenging the narrow definition of "integration of faith and learning" as being too reformed-ish. They intend to "enlarge the conversation" and broaden the definition. They want to include things like integration of "faith and hope" or "faith and love" not just integrating sterile faith and the sterile disciplines. They want to add the hands and heart to the head stuff the integrationists talk about.Written by a wife-and-husband team (Psychology and Church historian) they are provoking a stir in the reformed dominated educational cartel. It is probably good these writers are from an Anabaptist heritage where they are accustomed to being persecuted-I bet the wonderfully brilliant Calvinists who are given to "the life of the mind" will burn Rhonda and Jake Jacobsen at the academic stake!Hint to speed-readers: 80% of the book's contribution is in the first Chapter and 10% is in the epilogue. Great book to read through with other faculty at a book-lunch, that's how I did it.Raises great issues. Now it is time for the non-reformed people to do the heavy lifting of outlining is detail their (our) alternative approach... this book is (like Arminianism) not a true alternative approach--but a complaint against the accepted (reformed) approach.--Keith Drury, Associate Professor of Religion, Indiana Wesleyan University.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive & insightful
A lot of books have been written about Christianity and higher education in the past decade and this is the most positive book by far.The authors manage to be optimistic, insightful, critical, and creative all at the same time without ever moaning about how much the academy is prejudiced against religion. That is totally refreshing, and Martin Marty underscores that point in his foreword. However, this book delivers much more than that. The authors/editors have a chapter on different kinds of scholarship in general (they call these analytic, strategic, and empathic) which have nothing directly to do with faith, but which will be helpful to anyone involved in college or university life.People who might not be interested in reading other books dealing with religion and scholarship should read this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource
FORGETFUL OF THEIR SEX is a truly outstanding resource to those interested in female sanctity and the history of women in general, as well as the history of women and the Christian church. This book came to me highly recommended and did not disappoint. In a decade that has offered so much by the way of investigative scholarship of women's monastic and religious history, this book is a stand-out. This book is by and large very accessible and in general a great read. I especially appreciated the many specific examples and stories included in the text.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Extensive research
An extensive research to come out of Hartford Theological Seminary, which details quite importantly the life of clergy. However, I would argue that much of the comment is equally applicable to male clergy, so the book isnot as exciting and as groundbreaking as one would perhaps expect.Similarly, from a feminist perspective, I was somewhat surprised to find acomment in the book which tells us that women clergy are often more able togo where they are needed in small communities because their husbandswillhave good jobs. Surely this is a step backwards? Otherwise a good read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The True Woman : The Beauty and Strength of a Godly Woman
Even Christian women will be shocked to realize just how much selfish feminist ideas have become a part of their thinking. This book guides women back to what the Bible has to say about the ideal woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging and Encouraging!
This is a great book for any woman who desires to grow in her relationship with the Lord and become the woman He created her to be--no more conforming to the world's image of femininity.Susan Hunt does a great job ofsticking with scripture and biblical examples to paint a clear picture ofthe "true woman."

4-0 out of 5 stars A challenge to Christian women to live a Godly life.
This book challenges women to review their lives. It begins with a definition of what the Bible defines as a True Woman. Each chapter is prefaced with a real account from a Godly woman and her struggles with real life situations. It is peppered with illustrations of women who have walked with God.There are wonderful Scriptural references to help determine the Biblical purpose of women. It is a challenge to all Christian women to find out how to be a True Woman of God in today's world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource for Women In Ministry
Although Building an Effective Women's Ministry is 363 pages long, I devoured it, cover-to-cover, in one sitting. The writing style was as comfortable as the content was practical. As I read, my highlighter pen flew along, tracing the many "a-ha" moments inspired along the way.The acronyms, ministry models, suggested timelines and sections on ministry personalities were especially insightful. The quotes, stories and analogies made this weighty subject both intriguing and fun.A terrific resource!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Women's Ministry of Joy!
A well-orchestrated women's ministry is like a beautiful dance, bringing grace and creativity to the Body of Christ. In Building an Effective Women's Ministry, gifted author Sharon Jaynes not only teaches the basic dance steps, but all the intricate footwork that prepares women to have Scripturally "beautiful feet" in order to share Christ's Gospel of peace. In chapters like "Defining Your Purpose," "Servant Leadership," "Utilizing God-Given Abilities," "Encouraging the Team," "Lifestyle Evangelism," and "Dividing and Multiplying," Jaynes encourages women to glide across the dance floor of life, following their partner Jesus' lead. And with her trademark practical, powerful, and persuasive writing, Sharon Jaynes continues to lead the way in helping women to draw strength from Christ and, in turn, strengthen others in Him. I highly recommend this thoroughly comprehensive guide to women's ministries. Your women, your church, and your community need the potent principles outlined in this wonderful book. It will masterfully lead them in Christ's dance of joy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and readable intro to contemporary Christology
I have been using Elizabeth Johnson's Consider Jesus in introductory theology courses for at least a decade now. As far as I know, there is no book in its class for introducing undergraduate university students to contemporary theological issues in language that is understandable and stimulating. 5-0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT AND COMPLETE INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTOLOGY
Elizabeth Johnson presents a very well written and easy to read introduction to Christology for the new student of theology. She clearly explains the Christological definitions at the early Church councils, showing the errors that plagued the early church.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited thesis slants the historical perspective
At her best, Karen Armstrong is a superb and thought-provoking historian, producing books of 'five star' quality. This book is deeply disappointing by contrast. Though it contains an interesting treatment of much historical material, Karen's avid insistence that 'men hate women' so dominates the presentation that the perspective becomes far too narrow. Since her qualifications as an historian are amply illustrated in her other works, Karen clearly was being selective to the point of omitting important details.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history on religion and it's view of women
but readers should use their own common sense and knowledge of history as they consider the message that the author trys to present in some cases. She is obviously knowledgeable in this field and I consider her books an excellent source. But I reject some of her opinions, particularly her statement that "in this century, women have managed to change things for thebetter, and they owe this achievement in large part to their Christian heritage, though they may be unawareot this". I reject it because it is completely false. Women have obtained all of their rights; to vote, to own property, to keep their inheritance after marriage and freedom from physical abuse at the hands of their own husbands, not with the help of the church/clergy, but inspite of it. The church and clergy fought them every step of the way on every issue and was nothing but an impedement as they have been through out history in many aspects of civil and human rights. True there were some people of faith who advocated for civil rights and womens sufferage. But for the most part, aside from their faith, they were simply 'humanists' and some agnostics, who with or without religion, had human intelligence and a genuine concern for humanity.5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkably learned and beautifully written
Stunning book. How can it be out of print? They must be planning some sort of reissue; maybe she is re-writing.I admit that I have read several others of her books and seen her speak and she is formidable.I think I am more impressed by this book than the others I have read.A remarkably erudite account of how the monotheistic religions of the West (it is NOT just about Christianity, although more space is devoted to that religion; Armstrong is an ex-nun) have systematically created and promulgated myths about the nature of women which have had tragic and violent consequences for them. The ancient complex which has targeted women in the Western collective mind is so immense and so deeply rooted that the book may surprise even those who are aware of it. ...
