The Myth of the Submissive Saint
This is a good book.My only problem with it is that it is written for women.I understand that Brenda Waggoner specializes in ministry to women and that this book would make a great study book for a ladies' reading group.I also understand that it touches on an area concerning women where there has been much erroneous teaching.However, it has been my experience that struggles with dominance and submission are not gender specific.Many women have control issues and many men are recessive.Also, while the majority of illustrations in this book are gender specific, the Scriptures, quotes, and outline certainly are not.This book would be of value to people of both sexes.Many people, both male and female, both dominant and recessive, could benefit from wrestling with the statements made in this book.
Life Changing
Brenda does an excellent job breaking down the myths women believe and why they are not Biblical.Don't walk into this one thinking it is just another book on how to be submissive to your husband. That is a very SMALL part of the bigger picture; How to be submissive to your God!A must read for women who desire a closer relationship with their Father and an honest, integrity filled relationship with others.

Where, oh where, was this book about 2 years ago when I was learning these lessons the hard way?Fortunately God brought someone into my life to teach me these things.It would have been so much easier if he could have just given me this book rather than spending months helping me sort out all of the inaccurate submissive ideas I had gotten over the years.

Very Powerful and Scholarly Work!
This is going to be a combination rating. First of all, in content Fiorenza's book is easily 5 stars. She is exceptionally insightful into the process and presuppositions of biblical interpretation. One important stance that I appreciate is her argument that no interpretation of the biblical author's intended historical meaning is unbiased (like most claim to be). In other words, it's not possible for anyone interpreting the Bible to arrive at an objective historical evaluation of the text. Why? Because both the biblical authors and the Bible's interpreters are framed by their own social and political status. We must recognize this for two reasons. One, to see that the biblical culture and all mainstream interpretation comes from men, which subconsciously supports male dominance. And two, to hear the voices of women, those submerged in the biblical story and those who have not participated in biblical interpretation. When we hear all people's voices, especially those of the oppressed, we can free the biblical text from existing as historical "stone" to speak to us today as "bread" to the equality and justice that God intends!Read more

Elaine Pagels is perhaps best known as the author of the popular text, `The Gnostic Gospels', highlighting a lesser known arena in early Christian history.Her reputation is somewhat controversial, as is her writing, but one thing is certain - she is a good writer, interesting to read, and she will make her readers think.This particular book, `Adam, Eve and the Serpent' deals with issues surrounding sexuality and gender, a hot topic in the social and cultural situations of today, but similarly of concern throughout much of Christian history.There is a tug-of-war between `traditional values' (leaving aside that there are various traditions) and `revisionist' or `modern' ideas, and few are in agreement over where the boundaries should be drawn.

Detailed Images of God
Jann Aldredge-Clanton does an excellent job of laying out specifically the imagery of God presented in both Hebrew and Christian Scriptures (Old and New Testaments).Although most Christians are unaware, there are many masculine/feminine/gender neutral images of God in Scripture.This book feels to be an elaboration on The Divine Feminine, by Virginia Ramey Mollenkott.She methodically goes through Scriptural images and discusses the social implications of using unorthodox images in spiritual journeys.She emphasizes the healing possibilities for using alternative imagery with people who have difficulty connecting to God as Father/Judge/King.For example, God as Mother (common theme, though rarely discussed in Church) feels safer to many victims of rape, sexual abuse, or incest. Thought provoking at the least - Life changing potential
This book is not the work of a radical feminist, bent on reversing the existing social order to place women in a dominant role in the church.Dr. Aldredge-Clanton seeks only to establish religious equality between the sexes, something long overdue and hindered throughout history by a male dominated hierarchy.Her clear, thought provoking style forces you to examine and re-evaluate your perception of God - ultimately leading you to a vision of a supreme being who is neither male nor female, but reflects the attributes of both genders.To read this book with an open mind is to invite an awakening on both an intellectual and emotional level.Read more

Outstanding resource for women in leadership!
This is an outstanding resource for any woman who is in leadership and who desires to see true Spiritual growth in the female community of believers of the church. I found this book to be a fresh, insightful exploration of what the Bible actually teaches about women and ministry. Doriani does a good job of approaching the texts honestly and thoughtfully and with an open mind, earnestly seeking what the text says and means without a lot of bias from the preconceptions of one "camp" or another. Andrew Harvey took on an ambitious project with this book-an attempt to integrate a variety of religious traditions in their viewpoint of the Divine Mother.Mostly, the book focuses on individual practitioners of various traditions.The tragedy of the loss of the role of the Mother in spiritual traditions is exemplified by the fact that these practitioners are men. passionate, profound
In contrast to the first review in this section, I think that Harvey's 'The Return of the Mother' is a truly extraordinary book. It is certainly not just a 'series of excuses' for the author's lifestyle - the whole point of Harvey's vision of the maternal aspect of God is that She passionately combines and unifies the personal, immanent and sexual with the vast stillness and calm of Her transcendent being. She can be felt and apprehended in the most intimate areas of life, working and transforming. If you want a synopsis of the Eternal Feminine in world religions, get Anne Baring's 'The Myth of the Goddess' or (for a Jungian approach) get Erich Neumann's 'The Great Mother.' Harvey's book is a passionate - though deeply deeply learned - description of the need for spiritual awkening through the Feminine, dissolving outworn dualities. I cannot pretend that this book is easy going; every page is crammed with challenging insights, all is Harvey's beautifully lucid prose. Only one whose spiritual journey has taken him from 'tortured aesthete' to religious visionary could come up with the astonishing, extravagant description of the destructive aspect of the Mother as 'Callas-Kali, who runs at the heart of illusion with a knife.' don't waste your money
I was truly disappointed with this book.It is not so much a comparative synopsis of the feminine in the various world religions, but more of a lengthy, personal account of excuses for the author's sexuality.It sounds as if he is defending himself throughout the whole book, rather than just being happy within himself and his relationship.He uses his knowledge of relgions of the world to try and show how his relationship is ok.I did not even resell this book; I put it in the trash to get one less out of the world.What a shame that the book couldn't focus on the subject to which it professes. ... Part manifesto, part group therapy, part philosophy textbook
I think that some Wiccans who bought this seemed disappointed that it wasn't a more practical work. I love this book specifically because it is a total exercise in thought. It examines where we may have been, where we know we've been, where we are and where we *could* go in human society. Men of quality are comfortable with womens equality
I am a male, and I found this book extremely interesting, from a historical and cultural perspective. The author believes that in ancient times, human culture was more respectful toward women, and this may be true, at least in some lands. Certainly, in intervening centuries, women have been treated as having far less worth than many animals, especially in lands ruled by patriarchal governments. Great Book
When I read this book, I was already well-versed in the damage that patriarchal religions have done to women's lives and sad part it true even in paganism and wicca a example of this is found on P17 of ED fitches A book of shadows which talk about the high priestess and high priest are chosen by looks ack what kind of stuff is that I think we need equality and get away from these sterotype which seem to leach in paganism.
