4-0 out of 5 stars Deepening Understanding
I think that this book is a very helpful introduction to feminist theology for someone who is already somewhat familiar with historical-critical analysis in religion and somewhat familiar with feminism. This book brings together the two traditions and presents a great framework from which to begin to explore feminist theology. This is probably not a good introduction for someone starting completely from scratch. There are less academic books, such as Introducing Feminist Theology by Anne M. Clifford which are easier to understand and navigate for the true beginner.4-0 out of 5 stars Still Worth Reading 20 Years Later
"Sexism and God-Talk" is based on lectures given by the author in the 1970's.The book was originally published in 1983, but it has much to say to Christians in 2002.5-0 out of 5 stars How could Joey Joe Joe possibly understand Theology?
I was totally confused by the previous reviewer's comments, so I read HIS profile (Ruether's is golden -- go look at HER bio!). This guy likes sports & video games & says every CD he's got on his public review is 'the best he's ever heard' -- a statistical impossibility.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A COMPREHENSIVE VIEW OF THE SUBJECT
This is an unusually well-balanced survey of goddesses in history and belief.Compared with other books on the subject, it offers more substantive material and there is an obvious effort to represent each point of view. The reader is given a full account of the manifold manifestations of goddessesthroughout history as well as the various feminist viewpoints of today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and essential scholarship
I read this book in mid 2001.For anyone who wants to knowfrom where the Catholic Church derives its intense sexual pessimism and its antagonistic attitude towards heterosexual love within marriage, then this is the book for you.4-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Insightful Read
This book is incredibly well referenced and insightful.I was amazed by the amount of reference materials that were also included throughout the book.I was also amazed by the information set forth in the book.If you have ever wondered where some of the practices and ideas in the Catholic church originated, this is a very helpful book. It's not just limited to a female audience either - it's also quite helpful in understanding some of the requirements placed on men by the Church.I gave it four stars instead of five because it can be a very difficult read -- not a great book to read after a long day at the office!

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK OF ALL TIMES
This books simply unmask the horror, perversion and insanity of Catholic Church. It is important people live the pleasure and freedom as a sin, because companies need them for work.It is important to maintain and consolidate socio-economic domination-see Marx and Freud-and the SEXUAL dimension of the man and ofthe women is FUNDAMENTAL for this.Church and rich and powerful makes an invisible alliance.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
"By Their Fruit You Shall Know Them." That is so true. That's why in August of 2005, the second edition of this book came out. Buy it; it's updated, answers questions raised since the first edition, and is an exegetical work of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rarest Fruits are the Sweetest
Rarely does a book earn the status of the definitive work on any subject as quickly as "Women in the Church." Heralded by scholars and theologians like D.A. Carson, Scott Hafemann, Peter T. O'Brien and John Piper. The design of this book is to walk a reader through all the various hermeneutical and exegetical stages in interpreting any text of Scripture. The reader is expertly guided through stages like historical research, genre analysis, word study, syntactical analysis, etc. . . The real challenged posed by this book is not ideological but exegetical. You may not like the conclusions of the contributors, but their conclusions result from careful, detailed, and sound exegesis. This book is the standard exegetical work on 1 Timothy 2:9-15 and has yet to meet any serious rival. In fact, because of its enduring contribution a revised second edition is slated for publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drop your biases and examine the text
That basically sums it up for the approach taken by Kostenberger, et. al., in this book. Most interesting is the survey across secular literature regarding the NT hapax /authentew/ (pardon the transliteration). The arguments and conclusions are not based on emotional appeal but rather on cold, hard examination of the text of the original. Several chapters by several authors examine different aspects of a complete interpretation of this troubling yet frequently written about text. No matter what you think about the issue of women in the leadership of the church, Kostenberger et. al. demand your attention -- and you'll be glad you gave it. This book helps immensely in seperating the wheat from the chaff when examining this particular issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Boundary or Creative Space?
This book is a constructive and positive investigation of the issues faced by women in institutional life and the church itself. It also puts many questions to the institutions women work in. Further, the overarching paradigm is evangelical - a tradition within which feminism is seen by many as one of the enemies. But Pohl and Hoggard Creegan challenge the idea that these are opposing world-views while retaining a critical distinction that avoids having feminism set the agenda. It is a generous and balanced consideration, able to identify and critique what is shared and what separates. The experiences recounted by fellow women academics show that the issues they adress are lived ones for those affected. Further, a definite theology emerges: one of trust in a faithful loving God as the ground of Christian life lived for others, for the creation, and for an ontologically coherent self. The book is a true example of the 'generous orthodoxy' invoked by the authors themselves. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming
This book was overwhelming and disorganized - what I mean was that there lacked a unifying theme; a little legalistic. The indicative should come before the imperative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good woman's book
This book helped shape who I am in Christ. Got me through some of the toughest days of my life. A great book to study in a woman's small group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
I really enjoyed the questions and lessons in this book. I learned a lot about who I am in Christ and about what God thinks of me. I would definitely recommend this book for any Christian woman, but especially a new believer. I'm thinking about using it in a Christian mom's group and am looking forward to the Spirit led discussion that will come from it.Buy it!! It's so inexpensive too...what do you have to lose? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Admirabal Attempt to restore God-given equality
Bilezikian is definetly to be praised for promoting gender equality as he, and many others, believe is God's true design. Several of his arguments are very well-written and challenging, doubtless refreshing to those yearning to break free of the yokes of sexism. However, in some cases I found the book a bit heavy-handed; as much as I agree with Bilezikian's general view, he got carried away a few times and some of his statements were inaccurate. I don't agree with his idea that Adam was to blame for Eve's sin because he didn't inform her of God's warning to not eat the fruit (Eve point-blank told the serpent that God warned her of the fruit, so this couldn't be true), nor do I agree that Abraham "obeyed" Sarah by marrying Hagar. Not only is the latter statement inaccurate, but it defeats the point of marital equality that Bilezikian is trying to promote. Marital equality means NEITHER spouse should obey, so implying that the husband should is just as inaccurate as saying the wife should. I also found his extreme criticism of churches with male leadership too harsh; while I agree that men should not be placed above women, calling a church's practice monstrous because it follows a traditional method is crossing the line. As a person who has had more of her share of sexism in "Christian" teaching, I can certainly appreciate Bilezikian's passion, but many of the things he said could have been worded better and I can see why some took offense at his words. However, not all of the criticism aimed at his book is deserved. Some have said that he contradicts himself by citing Genesis, yet calling many aspects of the Old testament invalid. I believe Bilezikian was referring to societal practices in the Old Testament as being invalid, whereas his referral to Genesis had not to do with society, but with God's plan when He first created the world. If you recall, God's plan for the world and the world's practices after the Fall were two completely separate things, so Bilezikian was really not at all contradicting himself by discrediting one and supporting the other. His overall argument is certainly valid. People DO need to step into modern times and stop trying to teach women to stay beneath men; in response to someone's statement that "The sexes were created for different services; is this so terrible?" No, but sexism is, so kindly swallow it before you speak of God. Adam and Eve were created for equal rule over Eden and God's design for equality still stands today; is THAT so terrible? And to answer another's question, these liberating views of equality HAVE been discovered before; you just apparently haven't been looking for them. Perhaps you should read Christ's lessons then, because He was actually the first after the Fall to truly introduce the idea of men and women serving equally under Him. This book has many good points, but if you wish for a more in-depth study of Biblical equality, I recommend "Paul, Women and Wives" and "What Paul really said about Women" over this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read
This book is one of many which are reevaluating our gender paradigmns in the church. It draws from the author's personal study and scholarly review of other's works. It contains a rich section of more detailed notes as well as a great bibliography of other works in this arena of thought.
2-0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to be convinced but....
...I was disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEING ANNOINTED THE STEWARDS OF CREATION DOES NOT MEAN KILL IT AND GRILL IT
this Fox teaches us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awe is the beginning of Wisdom.
Have you ever looked at the Moon with a pair of binoculars? Or at the rings around Saturn with a telescope? Or thought about a Hummingbird flying to Central America? Or saw in a flower the rays of the sun, the minerals of the earth, the awareness of day and night?
3-0 out of 5 stars Slide toward pantheism
Fox draws on many sources such as Meister Eckhart and Hildegard of Bingen to try to craft a spirituality based on awe of Creation. What I fear however is that his slide towards pantheism denies some of the rich spiritual gifts of Christ and the Holy Spirit. For example it is Eckhart who says "God begets his Son in you whether you like it or not." (See for example the book "Meister Eckhart from Whom God Hid Nothing : Sermons, Writings, and Sayings", or Schurmann's analysis of Eckhart in "Wandering Joy"). Subsequent to this book, Fox was expelled from the Dominican order in 1993. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From Continuum:
This book is about ecofeminism and its encounter with theology, predominantly that of Christian theology in Euro-western contexts. It introduces and explores ecofeminism and the encounter. The goal is to understand the significance and implications of ecofeminism and its contribution and challenge to theology. A further goal is to assist ecofeminist theology, or theologies, to be more effective in preventing ecological ruin, assisting women's struggles for freedom and supporting the flourishing of all life on earth. Ecofeminism represents ways of discerning associations of many kinds between the feminist and ecological movements, and between the oppression and domination of both women and the earth. Ecofeminism is an insight, referring to critical analyses, political actions, historical research, intuitions and ideals. The ecological crisis is creating a pivotal moral and religious challenge, and new contexts for theology. There is a renewed spiritual sensitivity towards the natural world. We are in a time of a spiritual awakening, wherein the earth and all life are experienced, as sacred, where it is possible to experience awe and wonder, and encounter the ineffable. Ecofeminist theologies are at the intersection of these ideas and experiences. They are the efforts of particular people who see and experience possibilities for greater life, more justice and freedom. They do not accept that injustice and ecological ruin are inevitable. Ecofeminist efforts are directed towards reducing further ecological and social devastation, and awakening consciousness to the immense beauty and elegance of all life on this fragile yet awesome blue-green planet.

This bookexpresses how we(women) should choose to live our lives and not let 'outsiders' steer us in the wrong direction. This book gives you the resources, as well as the courage to live your life as productively as you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOD'S LEADING LADY
I really enjoyed the book God's Leading Lady. The reason I really enjoyed the book is because it is a self help book. It also showed women how to take center stage in their life. Iwould reccomend this book to all females. If they read God's Leading Lady it will help them to become one of God' Leading Lady.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Platitude on Every Page
I have loved listening to Bishop Jakes preach since he was still in his little church in West Virginia. I've watched his programs and listened to his tapes. I bought this book on his name alone. What a disappointment. God's Leading Lady is like one continuous pep rally. Rah! Rah! Rah! Sister, you can do it. Go! Go! Go! "Step out of the shadows and into the light"."Don't believe that you are alone no matter how desolate and bare your life's theater feels". "You must move beyond the Potter's shelf into the fire of greatness". "It is time you soar". "All the world is your stage--step up and allow yourself to shine".

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read"
Those not familiar with Elisabeth's work might do well to read her article entitled, "Feminist Theology as a Critical Theology of Liberation".That article, published in a number of edited collections of feminist theology, lays out the methodology she uses in, "In Memory of Her".Just as important, those not familiar with her work should begin this book with the understanding that it demands to be studied, not just read, very carefully. It is not a written motivational talk, i.e. to help women feel better about themselves.Women are not the problem. The book is written to challenge the deeply embedded assumptions scholars and people of faith make about biblical religion, biblical texts, and religious authority. It is the challenge, not just the book, that is formidable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Radical scholarly work on women in early christianity
From Biblical and extra-canonical literature, Schussler-Fiorenza gleans many little jewels of insight into the role of women in the early church. She compares the epistles of Peter and Paul, which enjoin restraint andsubmission of women, to the writers of the primary Gospels who emphasizealtruistic love and service, not any form of hierarchy, as the substance ofspiritual life. She relates the social conventions and legal roles of womenin the ancient Roman world to the emergence of patriarchalchurch-institutions, in contrast to house-churches which could be headed bywomen. The picture which emerges is a very diverse early christian millieuin which women prophesied, presided over the eucharist, supportedmissionaries, and were missionaries themselves.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true love story indeed!
This book changed my life!
5-0 out of 5 stars Why is this book out of print?
This is a fantastic book!I enjoyed reading it immensely, and I want to give copies away to friends.I am sad to see it is out of print. It really should be brought back.It has a powerful synthesis of the Little Way, and the correspondence with Maurice brings this out very well.It becomes a correspondence and a comparison between a saint and someone who is trying to become one. Most of us can relate well with Maurice. The way St Therese relates with him helps me see the role of the saints in our life.
5-0 out of 5 stars A most beautiful book about Little Therese of Lisieux
if you admire and hold lots of devotion for St. Therese of Lisieux as I have for so long now- she always said she was Little Therese. However in this book the most moving charisma of her love and personality are seen in a "big" way regarding her friendship with Maurice. We see a saint so full of love and compassion for his shortcomings and never does she once in this book show anything but encouragement to Maurice. There are many lessons to be learned in reflecting on this book . One of the most significant things I feel is our should be support to our priests, bishops and clergy in the universal catholic church. As Maurice radiates in this book as an aspiring semanarian our clergy does have up's and down's also. May we all love our clergy as St. Therese did, does and symbolizes her special love for the priests, and bishops. A most marvelous book. As the late John Cardinal O'Connor said in his review to Ahern's book " We see Therese now more as a woman and we are fascinated. :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sister Power
The African woman's American experience was born with the Atlantic slave trade.Bartered for cheap trinkets or outright stolen they were viewed as disposable commodities in the world of commerce.Their American experience effectively disintegrated their concepts of reality and rendered all chaotic. To survive in the Americas it was necessary to re-examine, re-construct and or replace their sacred cosmos which had given order and purpose to their lives. The Christianity that became their own allowed them identity and redefinition. It was this faith of compassion born of the experience of suffering that sustained and nurtured their souls. The response to the power of the Gospel was the ignition of a fire to preach. Historically, Black men who preached filled a role that was, at least a traditional male one, but Black women preachers experienced cultural conflict within their own black society.Mothers, wives, and bearers of the word, African-American women faced a hostile pulpit. Initially, their call to preach the gospel was not recognized by the churches they served.
5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful stories & sermons of powerful, inspiring women
Ms. Collier-Thomas has written a flowing commentary on the tribulations of people called by God to preach and then battered in their odysseys to fulfill that calling because of their gender as well as their race.Ms.Collier-Thomas' prose is a joy to read. She sets the background in whicheach of these remarkable women worked, as well as recounting fairly andevenly the issues of contention they lived through. The book is worthwhilefor the sermons alone -- the biographies and history make it a "mustread" for feminists, historian, spiritual seekers, and Christiansalike. ...
