4-0 out of 5 stars In depth perspectives tying feminism (real) with Catholicism
Although primarily Catholic in content, it is rich in basic Christian theology. An excellent read for one who questions equality issues facing the "90's" woman. A practicing, faithful Catholic or Christianwoman may see limits on the role of women in the church. The essays arerichly developed in this area .One section of the book deals with currentpsychology and provides some comparison on issues such as psychologicaldevelopment (Jung) and highlights a concept that "women's spiritual experience" is not represented in historical tradition. Each essay iswell footnoted. This is not light reading and there are no interpretivecommentaries for someone just beginning to research their spirituality. This should definitely be on every spiritual woman's bookshelf as aresource.I am glad it is on mine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars read this book!
This book is one of the most insperational books that I have read regarding women in spirituality. It is so good that I bought it after checking it out from the library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to living, female hindu saints
A short and easy to read introduction to the situation of female hindu saints in general and to six ones in particular: Shree Maa, Anandamayi Ma, Anandi Ma, Swami Chidvilasananda, Ma Yoga Shakti and Ammachi. Five of the former are still alive and could, theoretically, be physically met. The nature of the book prevents the author from diving deeper into the lifes of these saints. But she recommends further reading with a list of books about individual of the above saints. (Three stars only, because it's somewhat superficial).

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful journey to the Goddess and her daughters
In this time of the renaissance of the divine femine, Linda Johnsen has written a wonderful book that reveals the beautiful and ancient tradition of Goddess energy and women saints in India, and introduces the reader tocontemporary women who embody the many aspects of the Goddess, asincarnations of her, and who are alive and active today. Her accounts ofliving, traveling with, and encountering these remarkable women, arefascinating glimpses into the wisdom and transformative energy that theyembody and share with many around the world. She writes as an observer, ascholar, and a devotee, and does so with respect, fascination, reverenceand chronicles her own transformation in her meetings with these livingwomen saints. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the history anddaily life of the avatars living amongst us, and the strong Goddesstradition of their homeland and heritage. It is a unique and hearteningbook which contains humor, storytelling, history, wisdom, and written froma perspective that only a women could do in her study of the mysteries andbeauty of the Goddess and her daughters, in all her aspects.Read thisbook and let the women that she encounterd grace you with their presence aswell, through their photos, words, and energy, for the Goddess livesthrough them, and in this book you can become acquainted with them, as theauthor did.I appreciate this book immensely, for it is a wonderful forumand introduction to the women who are incarnations of the Goddess, and whoare revealed in a personal way so well by the author. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Worth wading through, but has some problems
There is some very good information, as well as intriguing ideas, in this book.Unfortunately, it is a bit disorganized. The flow of ideas doesn't always go in a logical order. The book also suffers from some (many) very convoluted sentences that take a couple of read-throughs to decipher.Still, I have no regrets about buying or reading it.There is a lot of information about Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, and Sufi(ist?) traditions honoring the feminine principle. Two cautions:First, Twilight Goddess contains explicit descriptions of sacred sex rites. If such descriptions bother you, this is not a book for you.Second, I noticed one possible oversight, which makes me wonder if there are more.In the discussion of Mary mother of Jesus, it is claimed that she and Joseph shared only a platonic marriage. But it is my understanding that, according to Christian tradition, they had children after Jesus was born.It seemed that this needed at least some mention in the discussion.Perhaps the explanation is that they were focusing on Sufi tradition rather than Christian.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Provocative, Scholarly, and Occasionally Funny
Uta Ranke-Heinemann takes her considerable talents and applies them to a critical analysis of the gospels, revealing the incongruities, impossibilities, distortions, and mis-interpretations that have plagued the study of the historical Jesus. Much of the material she covers has been covered by others, but she has a unique perspective and often brings to light issues which previous researchers have overlooked or ignored. There is no one so well read on the life of the historical Jesus that they will not benefit from reading this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be frightened
Don't be frightened by the facts and investigation found in the book titled "Putting Away Childish Things".The author takes some of the chipped foundations of Christianity and crumbles them into reality and logic. She turns fantasy and fable into truth and divinity. It will be blasphemous to some, shocking to many, and a clear revelation to others.Uta Ranke-Heinemann's goal appears to be clarity of thought when it comes to the message of God.You must read the book to find the message.

4-0 out of 5 stars Check it out for yourself!
If the last two pages of this book were eliminated, it could be appropriately titled, "Debunking Christianity." Nonetheless, regardless of whether or not Uta Ranke-Heinemann is too extreme, I think her work has something very valuable to offer. It starts out with a few chapters just on Jesus' early years. The two gospel's birth narratives are their own worst enemies. The genealogies are a mess. In hindsight we find ignorant gospel writers. Later, in Christ's ministry, the prophet in a Hellenistic world was not too original when it came to being a thaumaturge. BUT, the theme of this book is giving up miraculous dogma. The miracles are of no relevence to a faith in the word of Jesus and God's love. His healing of the sick has no point unless we are too able to be healed by Him. Any honest intellectual could plainly see that Jesus was not originally made out to be a deity or "second person of the trinity." But wow, she takes it alot further than this in dropping the position of Christ as the Jewish Messiah and denying that he had to die for the sins of mankind. This seems unorthodox to most, but I do not think she is completely mistaken. (so go re-read Hosea 6:6 !) Other features to mention is the bogus personage of Judas Iscariot, who is really the personification of the Greeks' anti-Semitism. And also she takes us through a history of perdition ( Hell, Hades, Sheol, Gehenna, etc) taking it away from the ministry of Christ. Hellfire she believes, as do I, turns the gospel on its head and is at worst self defeating to the point of it all. Since her book is a huge stretch from orthodoxy and a transmogrification from the mass of Christian theology, she REALLY should have put more time into discussing her beliefs about the true meaning of Christ and why she believes certain sayings are authentic to Jesus while others are interpolations, besides her few neglible mentions in the book's body and a 2-page afterword. But verily, this is something that every Christian should consider to be a follower of Jesus' teaching and not a slave of church dogma. I hope that this book serves as a tool to erase fundamentalist hermeneutics and blind faith in bogus claims and to mollify others in a spiritual journey closer to bona fide religion and further away from wretched and morbid theology focused on the cross of human sacrifice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to Review a Book
I plan to order this book for the college bookstore because it addresses the problem with religious feminism--not feminism as it relates to race.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the impact of feminist ideology
I would highly recommend this book for a solidly researched overview of feminist ideology on our culture. As a traditional Conservative woman, I found it refreshing to read many of my own views with good documentation (which I'd been too lazy to do for myself).
1-0 out of 5 stars A non-sensical scare tactic
Anyone who writes about feminism as though there is only one kind of feminism is not only short-sighted, but extremely arrogant as to suppose one's thoughts were worth the killing of innocent trees, whose resources could have been better used for a written work that recognizes and distinguishes between the different types of feminist approaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning.
In this amazing book, Welch constructs an ethic of resistance to injustice within the limits of human finitude.Taking both sides of this tension seriously - the need to oppose oppression and the need to recognize one'slimits and limitations - she forges a theology truly adequate to the taskof liberation. Her thought-provoking interpretations of African-Americanliterature are a particular strength of the book. For anyone wondering howto maintain hope in the face of massive suffering, this book is amust-read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Grace Jantzen presents a thorough, interesting background of Julian's place, time, and spirituality. It is especially valuable because, unlike many other contemporary books on the topic, it is not speculative -conclusions can be trusted because no half truths are justified. Excellentscholarly work. Only the political correctness in the introduction is a bitboring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good news, great scholarship, godly conclusions
For this PCA Presbyterian woman, happily married in an egalitarian marriage for 18 years, blessed with four children, this book was indeed good news. Not only is the scholarship excellent, but it has helped give me the tools to intelligently discuss this issue with my children, in helping them to understand who they are in God's image.Furthermore, in my region of the US, Groothius's work is pivotal in equipping godly PCA women who desire God's best for the denomination - full inclusion of women in leadership. This text, filled with outstanding biblical scholarship, has helped to open up discussion of full inclusion of women's ordination at high levels within the PCA church.

1-0 out of 5 stars War of the gods
One must wonder since the author is so offended by the notion of a Father God with a male gender if she even knows the Christian God at all. She seems to have more comaraderie with the Wiccans and the liberal feminists than the Christians. Sure, when Jesus is referred to as a "door" that is a metaphor; God as a "hen" with feathers is a metaphor. But the author crosses the line when she claims that the gender of the holiness of the Father/God of the Jews and Gentiles is a metaphor. I have no use for this book. Satan can take on both masculine and feminine--as the "unknown god". My God is known and came in the form of a Man in Jesus Christ, and HE is not a metaphor. "God is a Spirit, and those who worship HIM must worship HIM in Spirit and in TRUTH."

1-0 out of 5 stars A Reader in NY
This was not good news to me and does not represent who I am as a PCA Presbyterian woman, happily married and the mother of two sons. I resent how the author demeans women in her writing as if they are less intellegent than she is for choosing to submit to their husbands and staying home with their kids. There can only be one leader of a corporation, and one leader of a home; in a dance, one leads and one follows--two cannot lead in a dance, or there is no dance. The author has never studied Greek or Hebrew as far as the credentials state, and she is in no place to profess to be qualified in the exegesis of Scripture to prove her feminist agenda. I would not recommend this book to anyone. It is a waste of time. ... Read more

As a busy wife responsible for the care and nurturing of so many lives outside my own, it's nice to be reminded that it's "God's job" to hand the "fruit production" in my life - to bestow upon me the fruit of the Spirit. Most days I'm just busy ensuring that four sets of teeth get brushed after every meal - the thought of being loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and exercising self control can be daunting.Thank goodness for encouraging authors like Elisa Morgan, who not only inspire the heart, but also offer the tools to keep me aiming at and running towards my spiritual goals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Treasure of Women in the New Testament
Woman Word is a treasure of Women's stories from the New Testament. Each woman is described biographically, then within context historically and according to her place within scripture. An inclusive lectionary reading of the scripture passages follows with an original psalm and prayer. The points for shared reflection accompanying each woman provide thoughtful reflection for solitary prayer or group discussion. The illustrations help to bring these women to life!I cannot recommend this book enough for those who are seeking to expand their relationship with a God who transcends gender and calls us to step outside the boundaries that limit our vision. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars badly nedded
This book was a good start in peeling back paternalism and male privilage in Catholicism.Though not going as far as the awsome 'Beyond God the Father'.Daly especially has no time for the 'mental contortionism' involved in trying to rehash Pauline texts in any acceptable feminist form; she makes no compromises, if it doesn't work toss it out.Indeed her indictment of Ephesians is spot on.Husband love your wives, but not enough to recognize thier autonomy, instead cultivate a patronizing attitude!Bravo Mary Daly for taking on the author of such gems as
2-0 out of 5 stars Needed discussion and very much worth a read
Daly, a leading contributor to the discussion of gender, the Church, and God-talk is the author of tis seminal book on the issue from what is commonly termed the feminist position. I heartily agree with her that there has been much discrimination against women within the history of Europe, and in part within the boundries of the Church. However, I cannot go so far as she does in her assessment of its roots. One can beleive the right thing for the wrong reason, and in my view, this book is an example of such faulty logic.Read more
