1-0 out of 5 stars just let go already
The third wave agenda in an attempt to defend it's modern day merrit, in the face of "post-modern" critics, has only succeeded in promoting "post-modern feminism". The arguments made are proof enough that the third wave is out of touch with the current direction in feminism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Feminism is not dead (contrary to popular opinion)
What is third wave feminism? Many people have asked this question while others speculate whether a third wave even exists in the first place. The various contributors of "Third Wave Agenda" attempt to answer these questions and more. Third wave feminism aims to incorporate the lessons learned from the second wave while simultaneously adapting to current social contexts. This phenomenon is highlighted by the following quote, "I consider feminism a quest that we continually redefine, rather than a doctrine that seeks to confine me" (p. 136)5-0 out of 5 stars Pop culture and feminist thought brought together
This book is an excellent combination of current 3rd wave feminist thoughts and how our modern culture has shaped them.No one's saying "I'm not a feminist but..." in this book; these are writers whoare proud of their decision to support the evolution of the women'smovement and to analyze how it has spread throughout our culture.Heywoodand Drake bring together insightful essays, both humourous and thoughtprovoking, with cricitism of pop culture icons.A great read for any oneinterested in where "feminist" has gone...and is going...sincethe 80's! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
This book is a fairly good who's who of the Goddess realms. While some information is not exactly accurate, most of it is good for a quicky look up for the female deity you haven't heard of! Most blurbs of the deities are 1/4 to 1/2 page, while some are over a page long, again, not a true encylopedia, but still good reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice
This is a wonderful book despite some mistakes. Like Chandi is the wrathful form of Kali but she spells it Candi and does not state this. Not every goddess is listed here. Like you wont see Dhumavati, or Tripura Sundari, Kaal Ratri. Otherwise its a nice book, pretty big too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference

5-0 out of 5 stars The book I wish I had 20 years ago
I came up against conflicts and obstacles in my life as a 20-something woman--smart, good-looking, well educated, successful. I had no idea what kept hitting me. There were the reasons everybody cites, but there was something deeper that was insoluble, it seemed to me. I couldn't figure out why I was the only woman I knew who was stopped in her tracks, overwhelmed by the horror of people's expectations and everyone's acceptance of the fact that these expectations all contradicted each other. It was even worse in my 30s. Late 30s, I gave up.
5-0 out of 5 stars A woman's working manual
Apparently this book did not have the success that Martha Beck's subsequent books have had - perhaps the reason why it is out of print.I have read most of her books, but this one, in my view, surpasses them all; I regard it as a superlative working manual.I agree with previous reviewers that Beck is both scholarly and humorous, but I think the book's greatest strength is the way the author brings together so many women's stories - the rites of passage that we all need to know about for our own sanity.I go to this book not only for validation, but also for much needed refuelling.Beck's analogy of the chrysalis (although other authors have used it) is especially lucid, and is sufficiently empowering on its own.If, as a woman, you are on a personal "vision quest" this book is a great map.Find a second hand copy, and never let it go.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Beck!
I've read her most recent works and have immensely enjoyed the bright and kind wit of Martha Beck. This book is scholarly, hard-hitting and wise; I found myself nodding deeply more than once with a deep "Aha!" of recognition. She is nothing short of wonderful and her books are excellent! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fetishism haunts cinematic apparatus, then and now,
and this lucid and caustic study gets fetishism just right, in revealing close studies of works like Citizen Kane and Imitation of Life, revealing the cover up of labor and the will to domination, as well as the pleasures in the narrative drive to see/not see.Curious spectacles that allow the cinema-goer to keep going, even as the US power of fetish covers up exploitation with glamour and sheen and fashion and sublimity, not to mention the recent drive to romanticize imperial fascism in works like Hero. Gladiator, and The Last Samurai.Laura Mulvey is necessary reading, still.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Sparks
One should read this collection of essays, not for answers to the great philosophical questions in art, but for inspiration.Mulvey's polemics, filled with unsupported assertions and often strange conclusions, are not philosophically sound. These essays, however, are provocative and one cannot help but respond, either in sympathy or in rejection to her works. A risk taker, she gives birth to ideas that have transcended the boundaries of third-wave feminist criticism and have found their way into mainstream theory.Mulvey is a must read for feminist theorists and critics in the visual, literary, theatrical and filmic arts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, a must-have for all feminists.
Feminism Without Borders is an excellent book, one of the best I have ever read.Mohanty is a strong advocate of a transformative, economically and socially just feminist politics. She defines herself as an anti-racist, anti-capitalist feminist. Her feminist vision is one of a truly free world where every person can enjoy true equality, security, and integrity, where there is "economic stability, ecological sustainability, racial equality, and the redistribution of wealth..." Editorial Review

For anyone who wants a thorough introduction to the modern American women's movement, this is it: a rousing story of the revolution by a history professor who participated in its struggles. Ruth Rosen introduces her book by reminding readers of discriminatory practices that were common in pre-1960s America: "Harvard's Lamont Library was off-limits to women for fear they would distract male students. Newspaper ads separated jobs by sex; bars often refused to serve women; some states even excluded women from jury duty; no women ran big corporations or universities, worked as firefighters or police officers." She then proceeds to delineate the changes that make such discrimination seem unthinkable today. Her research takes in popular books, magazines, newspaper articles and television, the details of politics and law, and the individual liberation stories of not only famous feminists and thinkers but many lesser-known women as well.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Professor Rosen Documents American Women's Movement
With great insight in text and pictures, this book is a must read for every woman in our world today. The American women's movement shows how rights were won for women in a democracy. This book is a guide for others who seek these same rights. America has come so far and women need to know of the sacrifices that were made by many women (and men) to achieve this freedom for their lives. Professor Rosen makes sure all who read this book will know, and be given the opportunity to return something for this wonderful gift American women have been given.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read!
This book explores the history of the women's movement in the 20th century.Although many books have been written on the first wave of feminism, this book deals with the second wave--written by a real pioneer in the field of women's history. The World Split Open shows how rights possessed by women today were almost non-existent less than fifty years ago.Although women gained the right to vote in the early part of the twentieth century, this book shows how far women still had (and still do have) to go.Ruth Rosen is an amazing person (I was a student in her women's history course at UC Davis last year), and I highly recomend this book to those interested in the study of not only women, but the American family as a whole.Further, I challenge anyone who sees "feminists" in a negative light to read this book and thus have their assumptions proven false.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting read
This was a very enjoyable and interesting read.Although I was an adolescent in the 1960's, it gave me tremendous insight into many of the privileges these courageous women fought for that many of us now take for granted. It was a fascinating eye- opener for me. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A poorly written piece, lax in style and weak in intellectual rigor
Dorinne Kondo applies loose academic standards to her writing. She is unabashed about it: hers is "a strategy that expands notions of what can count as theory", and her "emphasis on complexity, power, contradiction, discursive production, and ambiguity is invoked in part to demonstrate complexity and irony in the lives of the people I knew, in order to complicate and dismantle the ready stereotypes that erase complexity in favor of simple, unitary images."
5-0 out of 5 stars Kondo is fascinating
If you see the world in black & white, then this book probably is not for you.If, however, you are interested in challenging any preconceived notions you may have about Japan, for example, this book is an important contribution. Not a waste of paper!

2-0 out of 5 stars A big yawn
If you are into ethnographies where lots of words have ominous quotation marks around them, then this book is for you.If you find post-modernism a whole lot of nonsense perpetuated by people who see Al Gore as a deep thinker, then you may just pick up a used copy of Let's Go Japan or Lonely Planet-- more readable and useful that this "ethnography".All those poor dead trees which died for this book...Shame! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As the Title Implies...For "Real" go here...
Just finished reading this evocative book and I am compelled to share that it imparts many views [on feminism] that I hadn't even considered. Most certainly, it brings to the fore new/revised theories of "WHAT is feminism and how is it manifest in my life?"From one essay to the next, substantive content reached out and informed on meaningful levels.Frequently I'd pause, consider, read on and take in the many experiences shared.Very well represented in terms of breadth, scope, aesthetic perspectives. A visionary work. This book doesn't compete with the established feminist focus; rather it seeks to make it more practical in the here and now, where feminism's [shifting]relevance and relativity are being addressed both collectively and individually. It gives voice to those women and men who desire to genuinely, fully harmonize/actualize in the world they've inherited from the perpectives they reflect. Definitely worth exploring.
5-0 out of 5 stars The truth may be shocking, but it is always a good read
I have to admitt, at times, I was shocked by the honesty of some of the pieces in this book. The information shared was very personal but made the experience that much more personal and eye opening.I found myself relating to women and men on issues I had never given much thought.
1-0 out of 5 stars This was supposed to respect my generation of feminists??
Having read this book for my feminist theories class, I was shocked at the celebrity afterward from Angela Davis, which admitted she hadn't initially thought our generation of feminist theorists was important enough to read for their own sakes. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lee's Student
I have Lee as a professor right now. I thought it was interesting that she helped write the book, and then was going to teach with it. Well when we were assigned to read the first chapter the first class, I thought..how am I going to read the rest of this??! The way the book is set up, I can't even follow it. The terms are thrown in the middle of paragraphs, and it's difficult to follow along. I think it just seems like a lot of "babble" throught the whole thing. If things were set up better, I'm sure the ideas presented would be wonderful, but it's just difficult how it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction
This book is a great introduction for those who want to learn more about what feminism is all about. The book contains the history of the women's movement and articles from a variety of authors concerning the lives of women from different social and cultural backgrounds. The issue of race and sexuality are important topics in the book because depending on their background women have very different experiences with sexism. It delves deeply into the reality of oppression and how it effects everybody and not just a certain group of people. It's a great read if you would like to see women's issues from the perspective of a diverse range of people.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
This is a book for a web course I took this term. The book has an interesting set up; half of the chapter is a textbook type chapter, with background and information, the other half is a reader with selections from modern feminists. The first half was nicely done. There was the main part of the text, with boxes that featured activities and polls and profiles. The second half is what pissed me off. Now no offense to any pacific islander lesbians or hispanic transgendered people, I have no problem or complaints with you. The book however, got so caught up with issues that effected a small microcosm of society, that it failed to connect with me. You know a white woman college student. In many cases it insulted me, one essay refered to women in the academic world as 'white women helpers' of the 'male heirarchy.' Excuse me as I get my flying monkeys. Itmade the classic mistake of open-mindedness; it closed its mind to everything but what its being open-minded about.
