5-0 out of 5 stars This lays out all the ways we women keep getting beaten down...
Here it is now, 2006, and we have moved back into the 50's in so many ways. Look at so many 20 somethings like Paris Hilton and the ways she disgraces herself without any inkling that she is doing it.
4-0 out of 5 stars still needed in 2006.
In some ways, this is the book that came out to say, "Why Feminism is Still Needed." Written in the early 1990s, it covers the way that - sometimes despite appearances - American culture's deck is still well-stacked against women. If there is any book you can read that will fire you up about feminist issues, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A TRULY AMAZING BOOK
Susan Faludi`s book is truly amazing. With point by point, argument by argument, fact by fact thoroughness, Faludi demolishes numerous sexist myths, including the old chesnut about the "shortage of marriagable men" that has caused so much panic and misery among American women for the last 30 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE EROSION OF INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY
Tammy Bruce writes with an authenticity that comes from her work within the gay-feminist-liberal community. Her opinions forged from direct experience cannot be easily dismissed. She points out a clear distinction between the classical liberal and the liberal of today. The negative reviews you read here are written by those who do not want you to find out the truth about how the far left radicals have taken over the Democratic Party. They are enormously fearful that you will find out their agenda is to destroy individual liberty and impose their brand of group thought on us all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Changes your world view
The New Thought Police is a well thought out book by Tammy Bruce, former chairwomen of the LA chapter of NOW who is pro-gun, pro-choice, and lesbian.I read her more recent book The Death of Right and Wrong on a recommendation from Amazon.com and was at first taken aback by the author's own description of herself. This was not someone I expected to have much to agree with. Both in that book and The Thought Police I was surprised again and again at her matter of fact discussions of how liberalism is changing how we think about ourselves, our children and our country. One of the things I value most about her writings is that she is rarely vitriolic in her anger.Reading Michael Savage is also educational, but his insults and rage makes my stomach turn.Bruce turns much of her anger toward the organization of NOW, but considering how she has been burned by them, her anger is righteous.I find myself respecting Bruce and nodding my head in agreement with her often.More great reads in this style are Spin Sisters by Myrna Blyth and Bias by Bernard Goldberg. These books will change how you view the news.

2-0 out of 5 stars Written for 7th-graders, perhaps--feminazi 7th-graders.
The level of the writing is rather low--perhaps seventh grade--the sentence structure is rather dull and the writing itself is lifeless. There is little depth of thought expressed and I have yet to come across a piece of information that is not common knowledge.

1-0 out of 5 stars awful
This book is so whiny and self-indulgent that I am amazed that Wolf is actually a mother of two kids. It paints an unnecessarily bleak picture of pregnancy and motherhood, which are nowhere near as bad as she makes it out to be. The doctors and nurses and La Leche League and everyone else she complains about in this book are not out to get you, everyone is just trying to do their job the best way they can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, beautiful book
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from end to end.First, it was informative.I have never been pregnant, but may become so before my time is out, and I learned a lot about pregnancy.Even if you never plan to become pregnant, there is much useful information here.
4-0 out of 5 stars college degree to change diapers?!
I found this book during one of my "the kids are yours, I will be back later" fits. Both of my kids were under the age of 3, and my husband worked long hours. You could say I was burnt out.I don't remember much about this book, except that it made me feel better. The book gave me the perspective that I was not alone, I was not crazy to wonder what the heck I was doing home with a college degree changing diapers.I think it is a a good book to read when you are having one of those "moments", but that probably wouldn't be in the middle of a pregnancy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars India-specific analysis is excellent
Anyone researching the role of women in India won't want to miss this -- the author speaks insightfully about her feminism being a result of her personal experiences in India, while her mother and others accuse her ofbeing "brainwashed" by Westerners.Narayan makes a strong casefor "organic" Third World feminism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength FOR The Struggle
Buy this book for Chapter Three alone, but be sure to read the other words of wisdom. Yes, as the previous reviewer said, it is chocked full of Biblical references but it is not just written for religious leaders. It can be applied to all aspects of leadership and inspires-in the words of the author-"leaders who happen to be women" to stand strong against the stigma of "stepping out of place" into positions of power and authority. And while the focus is on women's leadership, the fellas can get a few shots of leadership adrenaline from this work also. I have had the honor and pleasure of hearing Bishop Mackenzie speak. Her writing is as powerful as her oratory skills. She has written the spiritual pep talk we all need. She could have easily called the book Strength FOR The Struggle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Focusing on religious aspect of female leadership
If you are into biblical references, this book is for you. It does not present a realistic view of the challenges female leaders face in today's society. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman
I read this book when it was originaaly published in 1976. Although Michele Wallace was a relatively young black woman (still in her twenties as I remember)I was most impressed by the maturity of her insightsregarding both black men and black women. Her intent seemed to be to pointout areas that both genders needed to look at if the race as a whole was tomake any progress.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A compelling Third Wave feminist, multiracial, youth anthology
"Colonize This!" is a thought-provoking, important Third Wave feminist youth of color reader powerfully documenting the myriad ways that the politics of gender, race, class, sexuality and disability interesect. I strongly recommend it for activist youth engaged in coalition building and anti-oppression work, especially young, able-bodied, middle-income, white, heterosexual men.

4-0 out of 5 stars Edgy Third Wave Book
Colonize This will make some readers uncomfortable to the contributors' honesty and in some cases anger. The various entries bring race to the center stage and this in itself will cause some readers to shift uncomfortably as they re-think their own particular privilege.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thinking and Racism

3-0 out of 5 stars Economic theory of work and gender
This book is an overview of how gender and race play into neo-classical economic theory. The authors discuss both macro- and micro-economic models, and how differences in gender and race can be explained using the models.Topics covered include: gender roles and economic development (in the US), division of labor within the family, allocation of time between the household and the labor market, consequences of women's employment for the family, differences in occupations and earnings, joblessness, and sex differences in other countries. The discussion is confined primarily to the US economy, although the theoretical aspects should be applicable elsewhere, and there is a brief section at the end of the book examining a few economic aspects of gender in developing countries, the U.S.S.R, and Sweden.Although the text generally focuses on gender differences, racial differences are also discussed with almost every topic. For the most part, the book examines only the economics of married heterosexual women, and women who are single or partners in same-sex unions fall outside the scope of the discussion.More in-depth explorations of theoretical issues are provided in appendices which follow several of the chapters. Each chapter includes a brief list of suggested readings.End material consists of an author index and a subject index.
4-0 out of 5 stars Gender Equity as Mainstream Economists See it
This book can be read at many levels -- used for a course or read as needed. You can answer questions like: How is unfair discrimination measured? Why do jobs that employ women pay less than those that employ meneven if the requirements are similar. Go beyond romantic love to answerquestions about whether marriage makes sense. Does welfare make peole workless? These two academics represent mainstream, what is called"institutional labor econmics."Anyone interested in the labormarket, gender equity, international comparisons on how women are doingwill find this book accessible. 4-0 out of 5 stars Connecting 1st & 2nd Wave Feminism:The Issue of Race
I read this book as an assignment for an upper-division U.S. Women's History (from 1880-1980) course.Evans' narrative style is informative, personal, and engaging.Overall, the book is an easy-read.
2-0 out of 5 stars Hopefully Helpful
The title indicates that this book is about womens civil rights. This is what I considered part of the thesis of the book as well. However, as I read this book it seemed to me that very little of the book concentrated on the struggles women made during the Civil Right Movement of the 1960's.The book focused mostly on the race issue of the movement only sporadically mentioning the struggles women faced.I feel that she could have asserted her personal experiences in a more profound manner by keeping foucus on her thesis "The Roots of Women's Liberation in the Civil Rights Movement & the New Left".This book is a valuable read from the historic perspective, but I do not consider it to be an easy read fucused on its main subject matter. In other words, if you don't have to read it or the Civil Rights Movement as a whole is not in your main interest, perhaps you should look for another book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Personal Politics Gets Personal
I chose this book to read for my book report in history class. I had never read any of Sara Evans' other works, but it seemed interesting from reading the jacket. Once I started reading, it pulled me in. I think that because Sara used so many personal stories it really drew me in. I would not consider myself a feminist, but after reading this book, it opened my eyes to a lot of things I was unaware of. So, I definitely recommend this book to everyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly and Enlightening
Elizabeth Fox-Genovese has produced a very scholarly and enlightening examination of women of the old South. In vivid detailed with painstaking research, she presents the daily lives of women, black and white, within the plantation household. Though written from an academic perspective, the author has succeeded in presenting her research in an entertaining and even captivating narrative style. For those looking for the behind the scenes lifestyle of unknown women of the South, this is the one book of choice.
5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and very good attempt
This is an impressive and large-scale achievement. I would have appreciated more acknowledgment of the role that white male eurocentric paradigms played (and continue to play) in the south and oppresion of Womenof Color. Overall, a good starting place. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Frontier Kansas
I read somewhere that a statistically large number of prominent Americans were born in 19th century Kansas. That was perhaps a result of the hard, but ultimately rewarding pioneer life that is described in these pages.Kansas and the West a century ago were in the vanguard of social innovation and progressive politics in the U.S.
5-0 out of 5 stars Determination and Faith
Since I found that my great grandmother's brother and sister went on a Wagon Train to Nebraska from Bedford County PA in the 1870's and 1880's, I have benn interested in reading about Pioneer Families. This book was actual experiences of the women who survived in the early settlements of this country. How can we not be proud of their determination to survive and how much their faith in God played a role in their daily lives?

4-0 out of 5 stars ". . . the legend wears its Sunday best."
As Arthur Schlesinger Jr.'s says in his forward to Stratton's Pioneer Women: Voices from the Kansas Frontier our historical record is built upon "important" people.People who leave records of their lives. For years, women, for the most part, left no such records (Unless of course, they were infamous, Americans seem able to recall the names of Lizzie Borden and Typhoid Mary without trouble.) In Pioneer Women, Stratton attempts to rectify this historical oversight by presenting scores of memoirs written by women who inhabited and helped push Kansas along from being a synonym for a luckless hardship filled land (We need to look no farther than Baum's using it for the earth-bound, twister-prone setting for his book, The Wizard of Oz) to a state whose women urged farmers to "raise less corn and more Hell" politically (13).

4-0 out of 5 stars Loving Goddess with mind as well as magic
One wonders just what book it is that the reader from Massachusetts read.I've read REBIRTH OF THE GODDESS twice and I wouldn't have recognized it from the review.5-0 out of 5 stars A mind-opening book
I encountered this book while exploring neopaganism/Goddess religion, but I would heartily reccommend it even to someone with no interest in such things. The book challenges points of view such as objectivity, dualism, and social structures that I had taken for granted and never thought of questioning, and does so in a constructive way.The writing is warm and personal, but I find this suited to the subject. Can an impersonal "scientific" view really do justice to something as personal and human as religion?I reccommend this book to anyone wanting to broaden their point of view about religion, social structure, or life in general.

This book was both a fun and provocative read.Christ's prose is moving, and the underlying message is a move for social change.I second the motion. In my theological studies, accounts written by church fathers are dry and uninspiring. This book calls to attention many often overlooked perspectives. One, is the oppression of religions that follow the patriarchal code. Two, is the influence patriarchy has had on all academically accepted accounts of history.Three, Christ challenges the prevailing paradigm of dualism, or thinking in unequal opposition (Black, bad; White, good.Subjective, bad; objective, good.), and favors a kind of continuum (something doesn't have to be all or nothing, one or the other).Objectivity is not sacrificed, but rather enriched by the author's personal experiences.Read this book if you'd like to see a new perspective.Even if you've seen the perspective, read it for further enlightenment. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings on Gaard's opus against the Green Party
I read this book in hope of some illumination of the history and direction of the Green Party. And I did receive quite a detailed history of the contentious period for the party in the early 90's. Gaard is the only author I know of who has given some specific information on the developmentof Green Youth organizing in America, something I am particularly pleasedwith. Gaard's exploration of the ecofeminist Green perspective was alsorefreshing.5-0 out of 5 stars Greta Gaard has written a tremendously helpful book.
Greta Gaard has written a tremendously helpful book that examines the development of Green politics in the U.S. from the first murmurs of ecofeminism and of animal rights, and the joining of radical ecologists andanti-nuke activists intoa Committee of Correspondence in the 1980s, tothe conclusion of the Nader for President campaign and the subsequent splitin 1996. She brings a particular perspective to these struggles, whichcouldbe called a a cooperative social ecofeminism, witha grounding inanimal rights. She is unequivocally anti-capitalist, and not simply apopulist asking for corporate account-abilityand other reforms within thecapitalist system. As critical as she is of the Left Greens, in the largerpicture she is certainly an ally of the left. Of that larger picture, itreminds her of the allegory of the six blind folks who grasp differentparts of an elephants body and tell each other of the totality they arewitnessing first-hand. As a theorist, Gaard skillfully weaves a SocialEcofemninist interpretation into a demonstrably fair historyof the maincurrents within the Greens. And she illuminates some ofthe smaller eddiesand whirlpools that have, unfortunately, been spun off in the rush towardthe mainstream.Walt Sheasby

5-0 out of 5 stars Important book for understanding the Greens movement
Book Review: Ecological Politics, Ecofeminists and the Greens, by Greta Gaard, Philadelphia, Temple University Press, 1998 Ecofeminists are often marginalized by the patriarchal Greens and Animal Liberation movements.Iread Greta Gaard's new book in the hope that it would help me understandthe dynamics of the Greens movement so that I might extrapolate thisinformation to perceived problems within the Animal Liberation movement.Professor Gaard details the ideological complexities of the Greens andEcofeminist movements, and their interactions, with detail and clarity andfrom every angle. This informative and thought-provoking new book detailsthe authors' involvement in the Greens movement and political party. Itchronicles in detail the philosophical differences within the Greensmovement and within Ecofeminism, the effect that these differences have hadon the course of the Greens movement to date, and demonstrates how theNader, 1996 presidential campaign betrayed both Greens and EcofeministPhilosophy.Read more
