5-0 out of 5 stars This book was earthshattering!
The first time I read Ms. Bordo's book, I was so into it that I didn't get enough sleep that night. This book tells us the brainwashing media and society use to control women as well as to maintain the power elite. If the elite, media or otherwise, didn't use impossibly thin, beautiful, made up blonde women to keep them divided and in control, the whole structure would have collapsed long time ago.
4-0 out of 5 stars Convincing
The one thing you want to keep in mind when purchasing this book: it's not a light read and it ain't supposed to be. If three syllable words throw you for a loop, stay away. If you feel every fat acceptance book you've read recently has insulted the depth of your intelligence, then read up! At the very least, you can't walk away from this book failing to be convinced that the world at large is at war with our bodies. 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, relevant, a must-read for feminists
Although a challenging read for me at times, this book was full of "aha!" moments.I think Bordo nails it when it comes to how the issues women's size and appearance are portrayed in the media.I recommend this book highly to other feminists and those interested in media literacy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definately a book for all WOMEN!
I first bought this book freshman year in college, five years later; I still reference it for not only papers, but also thoughts. Each article is well written, compassionate, and definitely dedicated to it's chosen topic. There are a large diverse section of topics within this book."Women: aFeminist Perspective" should be a mandated book within all colleges.Thereis a topic of interest for not only every woman, but man as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An academic work--not a politically moivated polemic
It's painfully obvious to me that the only other review that has been posted to date was written by someone who didn't even read the description of the book, much less the book itself. S/he probably entered "gender" as a keyword and indiscriminately wrote negative reviews of whatever s/he found.1-0 out of 5 stars Doing 1970s Time

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read, but take with a grain of salt.
This book is quite informative in addressing many different Goddess stories and legends from many different cultures in a brief, fun-to-read format but the historical information the author provides seems rather vague and incomplete. It proves to be an entertaining indulgence, nonetheless. However, if you want to address the worship of the Goddess in a more practical and educational manner, I would suggest looking elsewhere. There is some good advice here for beginners and those who wish to use the book as a quick-reference guide or as a possible overview, but I wouldn't use this book for any in-depth studies of the craft. Also, the repetitive spelling errors can become quite annoying.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Goddess in all her aspects explained
Ms. Conway is one of my favorite authors and with this book she really hits home. She expains the three aspects of the triple Goddess in detail, complete with myths and lore. The untrue myth that the dark goddess is all about gloom and doom is completely shattered in the section on the Crone. The Goddess is to be respected in all her aspects and is essential to birth, death and rebirth. This book also contains meditations to meet with and understand all three of the Sacred Mother's faces. A definite keep in my library!

3-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive collection of goddess myths
This book brings togeather all sorts of goddess myths and Conway has sectioned them into catagories.A great read for understanding the relationship of the goddesses in many diffrent patheons. However the guieded meditations in the back are a little diffrent.I would seggest reading other books on goddess worship before you choose this form of connection. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Represent, DeWayne Wayne!
This book is concerned that far fewer black men attend and complete college compared to black women. It asks what factors may help alleviate this and then gives examples of college organizations that try to address this disparity. This is not an anti-feminist text.In no way does it diminish the success of black women by focusing upon the lack of success of some black male students. This book has a nice diversity of topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for women who don't want to be treated like meat
Many feminists do not like to be treated like meat or like animals. I think this is because we all know, consciously or not, the extent and nature of animal oppression. Why have feminists for so long co-opted these animal metaphors to explain their own oppression, yet failed to see that these metaphors only work BECAUSE animals themselves are so oppressed?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sexual Politics of Meat: ; An Ecofeminist classic
I first read THE SEXUAL POLITICS OF MEAT in 1990. I had just become a vegetarian. This book connected my feminist politics with my vegetarian politics. This book was a groundbreaking work in ecofeminist theory. Ms. Adams shows how a patriarchal society oppresses animals, women and the very planet Earth itself. She shows us how our dietary choices can be a resistance to the oppressive patriarchal status quo. This book continues to empower me. In 2004 this book is more relevant than ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Crucial
I could go on & on about this book.It is one the most inspiring and thought-provoking books I've ever read.I first read this book around the time I became a Vegan, developed a serious interest in Sociology, and earned a greater respect for Feminism. To truly appreciate and understand this book, one has to read it with an open mind. Some of the concepts and theories may seem extreme or abstract at first, but I suggest that people give Adams's text time to marinate. ... During the turbulent 1960s, Chicanas who funneled blood, sweat, and tearsinto Mexican American protest movements such as La Raza were often relegated tosupporting the men who leapt to the ramparts. Stung by such sexual discrimination anddisheartened by--or disinterested in--the largely middle-class Anglo agenda championedby the women's liberation movement, Chicana feminists fought to carve out a niche.Though dry at times, the outspoken essays and writings collected in Read more

Strippers, peepshow dancers, and porn stars trade spiked heels for footnotes while demonstratingtheir often overlooked ability to engage in scholarly discourse in this collection of essays focusing on thesubject of feminism as practiced by those who call themselves "sex workers." Along with thefirst-person accounts by such underground luminaries as Nina Hartley, Tracy Quan, and Annie Sprinkle, are forays into the sex dens by a number of academics. The writing is frank, though hardly pornographic, and many of the points raised and discussed are treated with more seriousness and considerably moreinsight than they usually are in the mainstream press. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All Kinds of Feminists
As a journalist from the San Francisco area who knows nearly half of this book's authors, as a lifelong feminist, and as a sexworker for over 20 years, my perspective is widely encompassing. This book expands the boundaries of feminism beyond the conservative boundaries of the women's movement of the Seventies. After decades of the bipolar assault on womens' sexuality, from Andrea Dworkin to Phyllis Schaffly -- two sides of the same conservative coin -- it is refreshing to see a new generation of women not only claiming their own bodies but also taking charge of them. This book helps give them a voice.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for the Pros.
I am a firm believer that anyone involved in the politics of sex work (pro or con) would benefit from reading this book. The writing in this collection puts a human face and name to what often gets boiled down to semantics and political warfare. These stories and essays are all well written, personal and provide the reader with an easy familiarity and way to feel some empathy where, that might not have existed before. In a society where sex as commerce pervades almost every corner of our lives, it's easy to simply sit back and judge without any understanding of the people involved. In sum this is a fantastic book my hat off to editor Jill Nagle.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new for anyone
Only women who need feminist bravado to feel secure in their womanhood will find this bok useful because it repeats what these sad women need to hear. For the more well rounded woman who's secure in herself, this book is basically useless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Connection
If you've ever thought about or wonderedhow closely connected today's women are the Bibical women, then this is the book for you.Tastefully presented, thought provoking, and easily understood by any woman of today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Time Experience
This was my first experience with Amazon. The service was impeccable, I received the books even sooner than they told me which was great as I needed them for a Bible Study class I was attending. The books were in excellent condition and based on this experience I will definitely make future purchases through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just A Sister Away... My sister
Author Renita J. Weems appeared to be playing the "Devil's Advocate" when she used familiar lessons from the Bible like Abraham and Sarah, Naomi and Ruth, Martha and Mary, Jephthah's Daughter and the Mourning Women and so on. But what is so awesome about "Just A Sister Away" is we were able to take a peek into the minds and hearts of the women who were not considered to be "chosen" of God and those who were placed in a predicament that was not of their doing, like Hagar.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good information but some bad theories
The author does provide good information on the status of women in the ancient world, but has some completely baseless theories. She tries to juxtapose the masculine Persian god Mithras with the feminine god Isis, claiming Isis was supressed and Mithras welcomed. The problem is, Mithrism, after Christianity and Judaism, was persecuted heaviest because it was though to indicate loyalty to Persia, Rome's enemy. Isis, on the other hand, after some early initial efforts to ban all foreign religions, was fully tolerated. It saw nothing like the persecution the other three religions saw. Also, she overstates Isis as a feminist figure. Most papyrus quotes from ancient Egypt have her worshiped as a traditional wife and mother goddess. All she has as proof of her contention that wasn't so is one Oxyrhyncus papyrus quote and a quote from the always unreliable Diodorus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Overview
I first read this book in highschool(Latin Class) back in 1985, and to this day, I still find it to be one of the best overviews on the lives of Classical Women ever. While there are some other good works out there, theya re few and far between, and many are not translated into English-which is a shame.
5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Work
I got in touch with Pomeroy work when I was a History student in 1993.It marked me because she was not interested in just repeat what authors just say about women in Greece and Rome. It's necessary to point that as a feminist she want to put in evidence contradictions about women roles and places. It's a very interesting feminist investigation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very intelligent, ground-breaking book!!!
Judith Butler's study of Antigone, over the course of these 3 lectures, yields important and timely insights about how we might understand kinship and love in today's society. Her analysis of Hegel, Levi-Strauss, and Lacan is impressively rigorous. A must read for anyone interested in liguistics, structuralism, feminism and contemporary questions about political belonging.

2-0 out of 5 stars ?!
The question underlying this book is "What would happen if psychoanalysis were to have taken Antigone rather than Oedipus as its point of departure?" (57).It is not a classical discussion about the play itself but a theoretical engagement with issues presented in the play as they have [or have not] been used by other theorists. 1-0 out of 5 stars Does this woman know any Greek?
I have located several misquotations and several mispellings of what little Greek she uses. Apart from it being gruesomely written, I suspect this woman does not know Antigone in Greek--she quotes widely from other sources but prefers to stay away from the original. I am tempted to at a later date say with Voltaire "I am sitting in the smallest room of the house. I have your book in front of me--soon it will be behind me" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mn na hEireann
When discussing the troubles in Northern Ireland, women are seldom mentioned at all. And when they are mentioned, mostly they are depicted as passive victims of a male-dominated war waged in a male-dominated society. This is often the case, but not a reason in itself to deny or underestimate women's contribution to political and social development in Ulster. Begona Aretxaga's book, born from the author's "prima facie" experience during a 15 months stay in West Belfast (plus several other visits in loco), is a successful attempt to analyse the role of women in Nationalist/Republican struggle. The author makes excellent use of anthropological and ethnographic categories in order to stress the importance of West Belfast women in contributing to the strategies of Irish Republicanism and the creation of Irish Nationalist identity.Although cast in an environment which tends to limit their participation to social life according to traditional values, Nationalist women often succeeded in breaking socially determined barriers. In doing so they contributed to Irish history more than is generally recognized. Moreover, the author's feminist approach, far from being a limit to her analysis, is an effective intellectual tool and succeeds in bringing to the fore a perspective on Irish troubles too often overlooked by many.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting
As a strong reader with a great interest in the "Troubles", I've read many books, by T. P. Coogan, P. Taylor, M. Dillon and others. I found most of them very interesting, but I was amazed by the overwhelming"shattering silence" about women. For instance, in 519 pages ofCoogan's "The Troubles", one of the most important IRA women,Mairead Farrell, well known far beyond the Irish borders, gets only 11lines.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional
The book is one of the best and the very few on women in modern Albania. Well researched, well written and with an exceptional understanding of the Albanian life-style and culture - Ms. Prictchett Post work is a monumental asset in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recomendable
This book is one of the best ever written about Albania. The interesting thing is, that it doesn't contains the history of men and politicians that can be read everywhere else, but tells about the lifes of the people of allages. It tells the stories of people who suffered a lot, but also storiesof people who are happy with what they reached in their life. UnderstandingAlbania is much easier with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Multigenerational Saga of Survival and Spirituality
Susan Post's multigenerational account of women in Albania is a tale of survival and personal courage set against the backdrop of the author's experience as a transplanted American banker, wife, and mother. Part oral history, part memoir, it depicts both the hospitality and spirituality that are indigenous to Albanian women whose inspiring-and in some cases, harrowing-stories the author recorded during scores of interviews she conducted throughout cities and villages. Allowing her subjects to speak directly to the reader, Ms. Post portrays the rigors of life during the repressive Communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha (1945-91) as well as the challenges and upheaval that came with the advent of democracy in this decade. (Alas, Albania's current political turmoil offers a sad coda to the optimism voiced by the youngest female generation.) Ms. Post dedicated this heartfelt book to her adopted Albanian daughter, but it's also a moving gift for general readers. The tone is w! arm, witty, and surprisingly intimate, and the author managed to expose the very essence of a culture that is both exotic and endlessly fascinating. I couldn't have enjoyed Women In Modern Albania more! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Resourceful and Thought-Provoking
This is a challenging book, but as an edited volume, can be read slowly.A familiarization with writings on the distribution of global capital would be helpful, but if you don't have that background, the introduction to the book outlines some of the major points.2-0 out of 5 stars this is a long winded book that could be 200 pages shorter.
This book is required by several Women's Studies classes around the country.I feel it is too wordy and hard for many students in undergraduate programs to understand. The main issues in the book arehidden behind a large academic language that not all students understand. The points made in the book though, are valid ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alexander is Amazing
By focusing the feminist eye on the transnational and "post-colonial" nations, Alexander offers an opening. . .a way to experience other cultures and transcend our own social locations.Herargument reveals that just because a nation is no longer under directcolonial control, it does not mean that the effects of the colonial mindsethave diminshed. We all hold inherited ideologies about what we are. . .butthat does not necessarily put us in a victim position. We all have agency, however we exercise this power in different ways.An amazing book thatshould be read so that the experience of feminism will be seen as what itreally is, and not bounded by our ideas of "Women Power" residingin the white, middle-class agenda. ...
