5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
This is a great guide that I recommend to all of you who are looking for scholarships. Check this out thoroughly, and if you feel you're up to the total scholarship plus being paid for training that West Point offers, I recommend that you then go on to read "West Point: Character Leadership Education..." by Norman Thomas Remick to understand the importance of this college that is the best kept secret and the one that everyone has a good chance of getting into. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for the high school graduate
My son received this book as a graduation gift.I ordered 6 copies to give to his friends.Everyone loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Without a Doubt -- Required Reading!
I should start off by saying that I've bought The Naked Roommate for my son, my son's friends, my nephews, my nieces, and for my friends' children and a few friends (they were having a tough time dealing with the college transition). Every single person who has picked it up has raved about it.The book captures the essense of college life in a way that is rarely seen and heard.I just heard through my nephew that it's being used as required reading on his friend's colleges. I was familiar with the author from his advice column, and appreciate his style of writing.I'm also a fan website(thenakedroommate.com) an online forum for the book. I found the title after I came across a rave review by the New England Board of Higher Education (I'm a teacher). That was last year, and this year I saw it everywhere! But I saw it first! Anyone who has something disparaging to say about this book, clearly has not read the book or has some other motive. In conclusion, this book is smart, funny, witty, extremely well researched, on the the best book out there for students, parents, educators, and anyone who wants to know about college life.I can't wait for his next.I'm sold.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Free Is Even Better
Ben Kaplan's book is great. I recommend it to all my students who are looking for financial help. I also tell my students to run by the possibility of the totally free college, West Point. You can learn about the significance of West Point to America by reading Norman Thomas Remick's, "West Point: Character Leadership Education..".

5-0 out of 5 stars No one should ever need money for college
I have done some extensive research and Ben Kaplan hits it right on the head. He shows you what you need to do to get money for college in the form of scholarships. He is the scholarship coach. I also have a very reliable source for students who are looking for money for college, realmoneyforcollege.com
5-0 out of 5 stars How to go to College Almost for Free
I bought this for my grandson, he has already written in for several grants, and working on more. This is a great gift for any high school kid, and even kids in college. I don't believe the parents should go into debet for this, the kids will do much better if they have to work for it. I've seen to many parents almost go broke with several kids at college at the same time. They end up with nothing for retirement. Believe me, you need a nest egg.Take if from a grandma that has a great pension. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This one's for the kids
I was skeptical about getting yet another college reference, but the kids will relate to this one even if you've heard most of it before. As for parents, I recommend"Getting in Without Freaking Out".My wife gave me the latter -- auniquely humorous and therapeutic guide, as she felt that I was becoming more stressed out over the college application process than my my son was. She was right, as usual. Both these books are worth more than thickly bound lists of college descriptions, which seem to be outdated compared to information that is alreadyonline, and free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saw it on the Today Show
I just happened to catch a segment on the Today Show with the editor of this book.I decided to buy it for my son. What a great choice.I gave it to him...and he actually read it.The best part about it was that he was getting good advice from other people (not his father) which reinforced much of what his parents had been telling him, but he refused to hear.I wasn't sure he would read a book on college admissions, but the fact that the book is all short snippets made it a perfect antidote to a teen's attention span...or lack thereof.I heartily recommend How to Survive Getting into College to students and parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice that Helps You Choose
My dad randomly got this book for me this summer because this year is my junior year. At first I was like "I already know where I want to go, Dad, (which is Duke)" but when I looked at it it was great because there were some things other kids said that I had not taken into consideration. Also I think the kinds of essay questions you get asked on applications can say a lot and now I am thinking more carefully about those things and my answers! Thank you for this great book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome resource
I am a parent and I really loved this college guide!I have read several guides and this really did a great job of reviewing the colleges from an African-American perspective. My husband went to a historically black university (HBU) and he felt the comparison of the historically black university (HBU) to the predominately white universities was incredibly accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended at my school
I am a guidance counselor at a large high school and have been recommending this book to my students. What is so useful about it is how it not only profiles the top scholarship awards in the country, but also discusses students who won the awards (and even includes their pictures and essays). I've found it highly motivational to show this book to my students, so that they can see that students just like them win these awards. We are even thinking about getting classroom sets for members of the junior and senior class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Helpful
I had spent a lot of time using online scholarship search database sites and was really frustrated. Then I found this book on Amazon and thought I would give it a try. I didn't have very high expectations (given my online search) so I was thrilled when I found in the book bunches of scholarships to apply for and tips on how to win each one. Why didn't my guidance counselor tell me about this book?

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW, GREAT BOOK!

This book was very educational and hard to put down. Very useful
5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for every prospective college student who isn't independently wealthy
Collabortively co-authored by Gen Tanabe and Kelly Tanabe, How To Pay For College: A Practical Guide for Families is a no-nonsense guide sponsored by the "paying for college company" Sallie Mae, which is well known for the award-winning CollegeAnswer.com website dedicated to providing parents and students with answers to questions about the college process. Written in plain, no-nonsense terms, chapters instruct the reader about how the financial aid process works, how to choose the best financial aid package and what to do if it's not enough, where to find the best scholarships for one's income levels, the best way to save for college including choosing the right 529 savings plan, how to avoid financial aid scams that steal one's money (one red flag is that only scammers will "guarantee" a scholarship for a fee, as legitimate scholarships are based solely on merit and need), and much more. An in-depth resource filled with up-to-date advice, that walks the reader through the basics of filling out forms and exhorts how easy it is to learn about the newest scholarships on the world wide web. A "must-have" for every prospective college student who isn't independently wealthy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Earns a Permanent Spot on my Bookshelf
I've been a college counselor for 15 years and each year I'm responsible for helping 200 seniors find the right college. I have witnessed many changes in admission but by far the most difficult challenge today is helping families pay for the great colleges that their children get into. What good is it to get into a college if you can't afford to go? This is why I was particularly interested in this book when one of my colleagues gave me a copy to review.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you or your son/daughter is looking for an athletic scholarship-you HAVE to get this book!!
This was the first book I've read on this subject and already I feel like I know so much!I don't know about you, but I'm doing much of my son's work in this area, so I feel like I'm doing the reading for him as well. It's important for the parent to be knowlegable even if the child DOES do the work, for they (the parents) will be doing much of the speaking and "negotiating" (key word you will learn much about) for the child.Have the facts to back you up.This author has been around and worn every 'hat' having anything to do with the whole issue of college athletics from parent to recruiter to agent to coach and MORE!You get the impression that you're really getting the inside information that you need to get the best deal for your child's education.Thank you Mr. Wheeler!

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked!
A friend's daughter who followed the recommendations for overcoming the Division III confusion & duplicity and successfully used the Ultimate Negotiating Weapon chapter recommended this book to us. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Legend in Scholarship Seach Books
The world didn't begin with Adam, Eve and the PC with static IP's. In the land before time (Terminals with Internet and Monsterous E-commerce), you discovered various scholarships to apply for from books, magazines, and the news media. Students (like me) spent hours apon hours in 'scholarship listings' xeroxing every possibility that we would owe the government less after we graduated college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think
This is an excellent economic study of how financial aid affects the decisions of undergraduates to attend institutions, including whether to attend or not.The Student Aid Game should be read by anyone interested in making college more accessable to those who are qualified to attend but can not afford it.Schapiro and McPherson demonstrate that increasing Federal Financial Aid greatly increases the participation of minorities and the poor.It is not, however, a book designed to help parents manuever through the paper jungle of financial aid offers and dealing with financial aid offices.Their goal is far more grand, pushing for policy changes that will increase the opportunities minorities and poor americans have to attend institutions of higher learning

3-0 out of 5 stars Good background; little advice for parents
Good statistical presentation of the motivation of colleges/universities in provided financial aid over the past few decades and how it is changing. Little to help parents to how to deal with a financial aid office.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good statistical data; little advice to on getting aid
A scholarly statistical work on the trends of how student aid is being disbursed in the United States.Good analysis of the what is driving student aid offices; how they are in transition and sometimes have conflicting objectives. Little help to parents/students trying to weave through the financial aid maze. The reader can assumewhy dealing with financial aid offices can be so difficult; but the stage is set to provide more specifics which are not included. ...
