4-0 out of 5 stars my review rulz!!!!!!!
This very cheerful story shows the childern that if they don't work they will not be able to reap the rewards. It is about a hen who finds a grain of wheat. She wants to grow the wheat but no one will help her, so she decides to do it all herself. the pictures are also very colorful and detailed. Everytime is see the pictures I see something new. this book is a must for young children because it teaches them responsability, and to do there share of the work. I really enjoyed this book and im sure your children will to.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Little Red Hen
What a wondeful story about the values of sharing, working and team work! This story was one from my childhood. The lessons one can learn from it apply even more today than they did 50 years ago! This story and Little Butterball (which is no longer in print but should be)are timeless.Enjoy it with your child(ren) today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Easy but Still Good!
I was looking through some old Little Golden books looking to see if we had any that my niece might like and I came across The Little Red Hen and I remember really liking this cute book when I was little and it being one of my favorite Little Golden Books it has nice pictures and is very simple and easy to read and perfect for a child just learning how to read. ... Do you like stories about strange phenomena, ghost stories, or stories that simply tingle your spine? How about stories about strange places that exist?Perhaps you are the type of person who is interested in UFO's.What about stories about interesting persons who have their own stories to share? What if I could tell you that this book is all of that and more?

5-0 out of 5 stars Mythic Consciousness
The 1995 edition of the brilliant work, "Tracking the Gods: The Place of Myth in Modern Life" is absolutely "a must be read" by all those who are interested in "Myth" and the importance of the mythological awareness, values, and meaning in the "divided world" today! James Hollis, the author, provided powerful stimuli for a quite necessary dialogue and awareness within our mind and thought regarding myth, image, divine mind, mythic consciousness, and the concept of "God-image." He also deeply and wisely illustrates "how myths reflect the archetypal roots of our personal psychology, and explains how ancient drives influence and often dominate our behavior." I strongly believe that this book on myth, God-image and values is a valuable mythic reference for all of us today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enriching and thought provoking
It's an easy to read book but if you are like me you will put it down on our lap at almost every page and reflect upon what you just read and why it struck a chord in your being.Hollis writes with authority and knowledge, compassion and understanding that addresses anxieties that lead to the path of individuation and wholeness in our modern day world.'Tracking the Gods' is no exception to his library of books he's penned that are great. From mentioning Joseph Campbell to Kafka he illustrates his points with interseting background material. This book is a must for 'self-explorers', those that yearn for a deeper understanding of their work towards self understanding. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book, a great moral
My mother has read my this book sence I was 3 years old.I couldn't understand it when I was small, but the beautiful pictures of water colors brought it to life for me.As a got older a started to understand that it was about a poor man who lived in a small cabin and goes to the rabbi for help. The rabbi teaches him a lesson.THe story shows that you shouldn't take things for grandit, and be happy with what you have.I've loved this story sence I was 3, and still love it at 15.

5-0 out of 5 stars But this book couldn't be any better
A great great story. The ultimate example of hitting yourself in the head with a hammer because it feels so good when you stop.In this retelling of a classic Yiddish tale, the poor protagonist visits the local Rabbi with a complaint. His house is too crowded and family members are constantly getting in one another's way.As the Rabbi instructs the man to add more and more animals to his hut, the scene within turns from mildly disruptive to one of complete and utter pandemonium. When the Rabbi at last tells the man to release all his farm animals from the hut, the man is delighted to find himself living a state of complete and utter peacefulness. The fact that he cannot distinguish that what he has now is exactly what he started with his driven home by the Rabbi's side-ways roll of the eyes in the book's final picture.5-0 out of 5 stars Every child should hear this book read well to them
I bought this book for my son when he was four years old. He is now 18 years old.It was packed away and found when my now seven year old was two years old. Both of them loved it and it has always been a favorite of mine. They love to hear it with a lot of expression, about "the poor unfortunate man." But make sure you put 100% of yourself into even the accent and they will never forget about the poor unfortunate man, which unknown to them has a moral, it will just become part of a strength that they will gain with the love of hearing this story, which they will ask to have read over and over again to them. I also have three girls and a son that is ten years older than my son I first bought this book for many years ago. All of them loved the story, and I bought a copy for each of my two grandchildren. So now my two daughters can pass on the story to their children. It is a wonderful story that started out as a purchase years ago and so appropriately has become a "tradition". Mrs. Symmington ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Delighted!
Originally, I had read this story with my 8 year old daughter for homework and 2 year old son loved it! There is nothing more pleasing then reading to a child who enjoys to listen. The book itself is VERY good and it keeps the kids attention. It has become our favorite "family" book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Animal tale from the Hmong people
The illustrations in this book are especially apt being draaawn from the embroidery style associated with the Hmong. The tale is a simple tale of a tiger told she would have nine cubs in one year being tricked by a bird into one cub in nine years. The "exotic" animals appeal to children while the story is humorous without any cultural barriers.4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I think this was a very original traditional tale from the Hmong people. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think children of all ages will too. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Inanna Queen of Heaven
Inanna is about the Sumerian goddess of fertility and the grain. This epic is one of sacred love and worship. It celebrates the goddess religion. This epic predates that of the Iliad and the Bible and yet it predicts the great flood and other events in both.If you wish to read a book rich in Sumerian culture this is the epic for you.It gives a sense of what life was like in one of the very first cultures on earth.Reading Inanna by Wolkstein will broaden your horizons and give you an enjoyable read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inanna review: Eshleman 2
The story of Inanna is the heroine tale of a Sumerian Goddess. It tells the story of her coming into her power as a Goddess and the struggles she had to deal with along the way.It covers the making of her symbols of power from the Huluppu Tree, her acceptance of the holy me from, a gift from Enki, the god of Wisdom. It also tells of her marraige to the shepherd Dumuzi and their relationship. Most significantly, it tells of her journey to the underworld and her resurection. This story opens the eyes of the reader to the culture and the religious beliefs of the Ancient Sumerians. It portrays a respect and reverence for women and fertility which is unusual in present day society.Inanna and her ability to overcome struggles however, can be applied to the world of today.Through reading this book, you will learn much about overcoming adversity and becoming your own individual person.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inanna Review
This story accounts important events in the life of the Sumerian fertility goddess Inanna. The story begins with "The Huluppu Tree", and then to "Inanna the Goddess of Wisdom", at which point in the story Inanna receives the precious "me" from the god Enki. The story then follows Inanna through "The Courtship of Inanna and Dumuzi." The final part of the story is called "The Descent of Inanna." In this part Inanna travels to the underworld to see her sister, Erishkegal. Inanna dies in the underworld, only to be brought back to life with the help of Enki.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid reference to myths and legends around the world
This book was an essential reference when I first got serious about studying comparative mythology. It has lots of good information about myths and legends from all the major cultures of the world. Even now, years later as I'm moving on to being being a professional mythology author and folklorist, it is still a good, quick way to look up brief overviews of mythical characters. Obviously other works are needed for in-depth study of specific myths and concepts, but as a general work this is excellent. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not many pictures
Bought it for images but not many. Students don't find book very interesting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely limited
I bought this book with much enthusiasm after reading reviews since I wanted to study more about power animals and be able to share some information with others.Well, there are no water animals except "whale", "dolphin" and "seal" so when we looked up fish, crab, octopus, and frog, we found nothing. My power animal is the cockatoo - well, there was not even parrot to look up. Bottom line, there are only 36 animals with information. For those of you who believe in totem animals and power animals, you know that for each person, there may be several animals to look up.This book is not for those who are looking for a complete selection (obviously, within each species you find so many but it would be nice to at least list the main categories).
5-0 out of 5 stars 4 3/4 for citations, otherwise *excellent!*
This book was *excellent*!(The review is ONLY for the book, not the accompanying CD).The author does an excellent job of giving the basic info on working with power animals--it's not the most in-depth look, but for a beginner's text it works very well.I would have been happier if he'd cited his sources, and he seems to draw a lot from wannabe-Native sources (ie, Jamie Sams' Medicine Cards).Still, if taken as a *neopagan* rather than "genuine Native American" (what tribe?) source, it's a good starter's work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for daily wisdom!
I first met Steven Farmer while he was assisting his wife Doreen Virtue at her Angel Therapy Practitioner course in Laguna Beach.Steven is full of wisdom and character.I greatly enjoyed his morning readings from his book Power Animals. This was my first real taste of animal spirit guides and shamanism. It opened my eyes to a whole other realm of spirituality, which I found very intriguing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Myths of Light: Eastern Metaphors of the Eternal
Three hundred years ago, St. John of the Cross wrote a beautiful work of Christian mystical poetry, describing his own spiritual journey toward union with the Divine in love. He then added commentary that maps out the path with careful precision. In Dark Night of the Soul, St. John describes a path of "horrendous" suffering, renouncing all desires and losing all sense of a personal Self.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Asian Religion
I heard about this book at the Campbell Foundations website and was very interested--I'd always wanted to learn more about Asian religions but had found the books I'd looked at either too hard-core academic or too new-agey or too obscure. I tried reading the Bhagavad Gita ten years ago, and thought it was cool, but couldn't really understand it. 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to asian religion
This book was a lovely, focused introduction to Hinduism and Buddhism, with a little Jainism and Taoism thrown in for good measure. I loved Cambpell's ability both to find the lovely, telling details in each of these traditions, and to find the overarching themes--especially the idea of Brahman, which he sees as underpinning all of them. I also particularly loved Cambpell's sense of humor--in one section he's describing the reincarnation of the soul, and says it's putting on and taking off bodies "like a shopper at Macy's trying on scarves"! That page is marked in my copy by the tea I sputtered because I laughed so loudly.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TWIST TO AN OLD FAVORITE
The story of the Three Little Pigs has been around for years and years and few children, nor adults, for that matter do not know of it.Here we have the roles of the "bad guy" completely reversed. The kids love this one and think it is truely funny.I did like the fact that the wolves did not receive the bad press that they normally receive in such tales and I did like the fact that even though the Big Bad Pig was truely bad in the beginning, he did indeed have redeeming features. The illustrations were great and the text followed the illustrations perfectly. This is a fun book to read to the class.I highly recommend this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story, distracting pop-ups
The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig has been a favorite story in our household for many years. We love it!I can't recommend this story enough!!!!The big bad pig is a tyrant and the wolves are such ingenious engineers, it makes the Big Bad Pig look even more formidable with his sledgehammer and dynamite. I recently purchased the pop-up version for a friend, but can honestly say I enjoyed reading the ordinary book more than the pop-up version. The pop-ups were very distracting and I think it takes away the energy from the story and the reader becomes disengaged, trying to fiddle with all the contraptions.I vote for the good old-fashioned book version any time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Bad Pig is Good

3-0 out of 5 stars The foundation for the study of Gemstone Lore
This book ought to be required reading for all studying the occult aspects of gemstones, and even those that are interested in crystal healing. The material presented in this book is very informative, albeit outdated in some respects. Nonetheless, it is necessary to learn what the formative principles are in this field of study, and this book is an excellent look into the earlier work published solely on the topic of gemstones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic on Gemstone Lore
I bought this book because Kunz's work has been the basis for much of what we know about ancient gemstone lore.Kunz's lifelong passion for rocks and gemstones began in childhood and as a gemologist and geologist, he was able to collect and organize vast amounts of gemstone lore. He was also a collector of stones, amulets and magical charms, many of which were donated to the American Museum of Natural History. His enthusiasm for the subject is evident and even though this bookis nearly 100 years old, I found it surprisingly easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars At times a little too skeptical, but that's the only drawback
Elizabeth Barber (professor of linguistics and archaeology) and her husband Paul (researcher with the Fowler Museum of Cultural History) has written a book about the human animal and her myths; why we have them and how they're created. And this book of theirs is one sweet creation; well-written, easy to read (more or less, anyway), and filled to the very brim with interesting facts for anyone who wants to learn more about human nature and our ways of explaining the world we live in.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Stunning and Important Book
This is a stunningly brilliant and important book.It totally revolutionizes our understanding of what myth really is, as well as our understanding of prehistory and ancient history. It is also written in clear language.(It also has relevance for understanding how the authors of the Old Testament encapsulated history into stories of patriarchs and other primordial figures in the Book of Genesis.) The book sets out about 40 "rules" or "principles" for determining how myths were developed by preliterate societies to encapsulate observations about nature and memories of important historical events in a format that could be easily remembered and passed down from generation to generation (before and without books or computers!).The book then shows how the original "stories" became modified (or, "mythologized") once the original events or stories the myths were intended to memorialize were forgotten. This book studded with brilliant insights. For 17 or 18 bucks, you couldn't do better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, Novel Treatment
Other reviewers have done a fantastic job of praising this book, so I don't feel I need to wax lengthily about its merits. Merely, with only six reviews (to date) I felt I had to weigh in and say how remarkable this book is. Truly among the best non-fiction I've read this millennium; I ponder the implications of the authors' thesis all the time. Do not hesitate to pick this up. It's a page turner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great and strange english humour
I have bought this book as a gift for friends ever since I owned my first copy.It is funny, beautifully illlustrated and guarenteed to appeal to all artistic types with an affiliation for Monty Python, Black Adder and all things English and comedic! Not for children, even though they love the picture. It stands alone although is really best enjoyed along with the other Lady Coddington fairy books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scotch-guard your wardrobe and prepare to be amused....
...because Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells is, aside from nicely done art (by Brian Froud) and brilliant satire (by Terry Jones), a fairly good glimpse into the sort of creatures that are around even if you don't want them to be, even if you aren't the sort to have pixies and goblins about because you don't believe in them or believe in them so much it creeps the little creatures out.Check under your VCR or underneath the layer of papers covering a desk to see what I mean, as you've probably got Doggitus Mucilagus sticking some loose change to the wood.5-0 out of 5 stars Rather inventive
Hilarious and all-together head-scratching, as you find yourself realizing they're talking about something you've been wondering about all along. You may have thought you were the only one undergoing the cruel and unusual punishment of these noxious fumes and stains, but here you find you are not alone...If you're going to read this aloud as a bed-time book or as a book of quotations, you are required by law to read it aloud with an English accent. If you cannot speak with an English accent or if it is terrible beyond measure, please read silently.Don't even mouth the words as you read.If by chance, you meet someone who is talking about smells and stains in a bad English accent, smack him.If he's bigger than you, you may let him off with a warning...or politely kick him and run, because big guys take longer to build up the inertia to accelerate than little guys.If he doesn't catch you and is breathing heavily, then run up to him and smack him. That should get the point across. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts You've Never Thunk Before
What you'll love about this book is that Citro spins a good yarn. His storytelling style reads well, and your eyes effotlessly flow over the words. As for whether these stories are true, he includes some fantastically compelling reasons why they could possible be more than simple legend or folklore. Documentation, methodical investigations by qualified skeptics, law enforcement sightings, journalists, and witness-upon-witnesses, all shared in a non-overbearing fashion. He's not trying to prove anything, he's just tickling our thoughts -- and it works!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine scholarship, but a poorly made book
Michael Ashkenazi's Handbook of Japanese Mythology is a fine work of scholarship. Classical and modern myths of the Japanese people are presented comprehensively and with evident care. Associated references are listed at the end of articles where appropriate, and suggested reading notations are often appended. The index and bibliography are generous and well presented. Overall the book is a wonderful addition to any library of Japanese studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction
This book was purchased with the intent to serve as an introduction to, of course, Nordic Gods and Heroes. This book introduces one to the Gods of Norse mythology, and tells the stories of the land of the Giants, Gods, Dwarves, and Men. Colum, using simple language and timeless storytelling, does a superiour job with this. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is a fabulous read. It was my first book I read on the subject and I loved it and now I'm looking for more books on the subject. Its well written, and flows very well. I like the tone of the writings, and how the translation seems to attempt to keep to the original stories as much as possible. I'm not an expert on the subject yet, so I cant give any account on the renditions here versus other versions; though I did look at another larger book last time I was out and and it seemed to have longer versions of a handful of the stories and some of the spellings of names were different. All in all, this is was a most enjoyable book and if nothing else, a great introduction to the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gods are fallible!
Nordic mythology has been generally portrayed as moody and depressing, with evil defeating Asgard during the Twilight of the Gods. According to Padraic Column the battle was a draw with the Giants and their allies being destroyed as well.
