5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Just had to add my own two cents to how wonderful this story is. A great lesson, a well-told story, and beautiful artwork combine to make this book a worthwhile addition to every child's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages!
I was introduced to this book by an elementary teacher, but now I use it with my middle school students. It is a great review of honesty and easy to do activities with. You can give each student a pot to decorate, soil and a seed.Watch them grow all year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful & Memorable Children's Folk Tale!
If you are looking for good books for your children that do NOT place an emphasis on physical appearance (e.g., a Barbi image), a gamble and/or other inadvertantly or advertently poor teachings found in books such as 'Cinderella,' then 'The Empty Pot' would make a great purchase for you. 'The Empty Pot' is a simple story that teaches how valuable honesty is. It is a moral that not only children should be imbued with, but one that parents and all adults could stand to be reminded of. Also, 'The Empty Pot' is a folk tale, which usually means it teaches a moral, unlike a fairy tale, which does not and may have a negative impact rather than just stimulating imagination. As a parent, it would behoove you to do searches for books under folk tales rather than fairy tales and to skim through them prior to purchase, as not all folk tales are of equal value. 'The Empty Pot' is one of the best folk tales that I've come across in my search to buy great books for my extended family. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Goose
This is my favorite Mother Goose collection.Wonderfully illustrated.Sylvia is a talented artist.A good choice for a first born.
3-0 out of 5 stars I don't recommend this as your first Mother Goose
No doubt about it, the illustrations are gorgeous. But while portraying all the familiar characters as animals may be a cute and creative twist, it makes it difficult to explain the rhymes to a toddler.Humpty Dumpty is shown as a duckling hatching (in various stages) from an egg.The dish that ran away with the spoon is a turtle with a plate as a shell and next to it is a crane(?) with a spoon as a beak. When I start to read "There was an old woman..." my kid says "No. Rabbit!"In fact, there are no pictures of people at all! This book is really more for those who own a traditional Mother Goose book and want a more artistic edition, or for kids who can understand that that this is a new take on the characters they are already familiar with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most beautiful edition
This is the most beautiful Mother Goose ever written.Children are mesmerized by the artistry, and even adults feel cozy and warm reading the familiar rhymes, and searching for the hidden treasures in Long's depictions.A perfect baby gift, or children's birthday present! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Readings in the Western Humanities through the Renaissance
This is the fifth edition of "Readings in the Western Humanities, Volume I: Beginnings Through the Renaissance," which complements the first volume of the fifth edition of the textbook "The Western Humanities" by Roy T. Matthews and F. Dewitt Platt, which covers ancient Mesopotamia through the Renaissance (with Volume II doing the Renaissance through the 20th century, leaving it up to professors and institutions to decide whether the Renaissance gets covered first semester or second). When I took history classes in school I always thought it would be nice to read some of the great works of literature and famous speeches from history, because those are primary documents representing the times. Now I find out that in Humanities you can combine history and literature and have been looking at textbooks for a two-semester Humanities course. What attracted me to the Matthews and Platt volumes were these supplemental reading texts (and the CDs with representative music).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written
This book was very helpful to me.Raymon Buckland explains the altar set up and candle color for each ritual in detail for those who are just learning candleburning rituals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple... maybe too simple
This book gives you a great intro to the easiest magick you can do... but it doesn't have enough useful spells/rituals. These spells do take time mind you... so be patient and devoted. Great addition to your library, and also great for a new comer to Magick and Witchcraft.

3-0 out of 5 stars Procrustes and Rorschach's Myths
Procrustes was a gentleman who made travel upon the byways of ancient Greece interestingly hazardous. He had an iron bed onto which he placed any traveler who fell into his hands. If the traveler was too long for the bed, jolly old Procrustes lopped off the excess. It the traveler was too short, Procrustes stretched him to fit.One day Theseus appeared before Procrustes' door and allowed the old bandit the opportunity to measure himself on his bed.
1-0 out of 5 stars This is no guide to Greek Myth!
Graves confirms that the only way to learn of the Greek myths is to read what the Greeks themselves wrote. If the desire is to understand what the Greek myths actually mean then Graves should be avoided.Robin Hard, in his translation to Apollodorus' Library of Greek Mythology, published by OUP, writes "the interpretive notes [to Graves' Greek Myths] are of value only as a guide to the author's personal mythology." (p.xxxiii). I cannot agree more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Important Resource in English on Greek Myths
`The Greek Myths' by Robert Graves is a perfect example of what poets do to pay the rent when they are not writing poetry. This is, of course, a gross simplification, as Graves was also a professor of poetry at Oxford University and the author of several relatively successful novels about the ancient world, the most successful of which was `I, Claudius', the semi-fictional story of the fourth emperor of Rome.

That's what I said to my husband after reading this book. I can't believe that there are so many interesting places to visit in NY. So we've put yellow stickies on each of our favorite places and we'll do weekend trips.

For anyone who lives on Long Island, this book is a must have. I cannot believe they mentioned Mary's Grave, the Devil house, and all the other things that used to scare us when we first started to venture out on our own.I am now taking my kids to these places so they can go on their own and get scared. 5-0 out of 5 stars best book for teaching children
This book is an excellent collection of wisdom even for non-buddhists.My children love the tales and the artwork; I love the meanings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom for all ages
I've been reading this book to my small son, who seems to like the pictures now more than anything.I know all of the stories now and find myself reading them as life events take place. It's amazing how stories can make a point more than just description. This book does just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Water in the Jar
I bought this book thinking that it was one of those gifts that my son probably wouldn't like but that because it was a children's book I could get away with buying it indirectly for myself.Sort of a back-door self gift, at a time when I couldn't afford to buy myself something.Well, I was right about my liking it, but wrong about my son--he liked it too, and still does. We have read and re-read many of our favorite stories (I tend to get in reading grooves sometimes, like the period during which I couldn't read anything but stories from "Interpreter of Maladies").Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ogham at its Best
There is simply too much to say about this masterpiece. Robert Graves has this special - I'd say "cardinal" - virtue to link apparently disparate fields into one deep and yes, poetical view.
5-0 out of 5 stars in the search of the buck
this is the best book i readed. i made it by the portuguese translation, but it's all there. for the studants of paganism, wicca, witchcraft and old religions, it is a must. the history and the links among centuries, folks and cultures, since the stone ages. in ours days, is an outrage to call someone a poet. the inspirations of the fillis, the ollaves, the bards and menestrels are hughest than we can imagine. the gwion riddling poesy are a surprising lifting up the veils! that book must be the first one, to who wants realize the pagan path.

2-0 out of 5 stars Betwixt Heaven & Hell "The White Goddess" once ruled!
"The White Goddess," at first, filled me with AWE.In the second READ I walked a tightrope without a NET underneath. The third & fourth READ gave me a definite sense that Robert Graves had written IT in a 'fevered flaw' via an Energy-deep within-coverting HIM...a thing the ancient Bards & Ollaves were surely wary of!!It seemed as though SOMETHING emerged wanting to put Prison Bars around the 'White Goddess' and Graves being an accomplished Scholar, Writer & Poet, plus, "a ladies Man" became IT's channel. For him, SHE became a Sexual Siren, his obsession, his MUSE...a conduit for his own Illusions...like a Drug to sooth his 'Fevered Brow!!Strangely, it seemed like a Prescripted GAME where during THIS milieu, the Triplet Team Goddess: Daughter-Mother-Crone arrived BEING promptly relegated to Bed, Kitchen & Kindercare...while his Favored FANCY...the Ivory skinned, red haired, light-eyed Cerridwen remained his Pirated Possession!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reality of the Unicorn
This gorgeous book is one of the finest unicorn books I own. It has great pictures and lots of unicorn details and a unicorn searching guide. It is worth buying if you like unicorns or photography. It is worth getting Unicorn of Kilimanjaro or the Calendar if you can find them as well. It is on my list of favorite all time books, and i see a lot of them as i work at a bookstore. By this if you or someone you love likes unicorns and give the gift of magic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, enchanting, full of dreams
I first encountered this book when I was very young.I asked my local library to buy it and they did; and I kept checking it out again and again.Owning this book now is like looking back into my own childhood, at the dreams and the wonder I had for the world. It's beautiful pictures and startling art has never faded for me over time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unicorns....As they should be.......................
This book by Robert Vavra portrays the unicorns as how they are. Peaceful, intimate, distant, yet very close. The only difference between the images in this book and the rat race that life is somehow pushed into, is the lucid dream state of mind that is turned on when reading this book. It will bring you there. A very thorough, and colorful view into the unicorns themselves. The question might be raised whether they are real or not,...........but after viewing the pictures, your mind will wander to a place of mossy lichens, willow trees, and cushion plants, and georgous animals that mystify.,.. A very good book that everyone from children to the elderly will adore. It has one particular image that caught my eye more than the others; It was the picture at sunset with the whole group of unicorns on the beach,...........simply breathtaking.......This book will enlighten all who view it. Peace,.........Onepath ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was the first of its type...
Since then, several other authors have followed in Cunningham's tracks. Books that combine folklore and ritual use, mythology, magick, and healing are excellent additions to libraries on crystals. This is one book that every practitioner should really have. It contains several nice lists of cross-references and many folk names for stones may be found therein.

5-0 out of 5 stars WARNING: The Legacy of UNFIT INCOMPETANT Mothers and Healing the Aftermath
Another reason why NOT to have children if you are not prepared to make someone else FIRST for the rest of your life!
2-0 out of 5 stars close, but not quite
I was looking for a book that had legends about orphans to which I might relate. This book only has 4 or 5 stories and I had already heard them in some form.I also thought there might be some therapeutic or life management benefit in listening to this book. However, the author merely lists the "gifts" (personality tendencies) and describes the emotions of abandoned children, but does little by way of giving ideas for healing oneself or dealing with the ongoing relationships between our relatives and others. The content and gentle delivery might be helpful to those still grieving or those still trying to put their feelings into words; but, it does little for listeners at the next level seeking solutions or strategies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hidden message
"The Gingerbread Man" is a great story for young children. However this story also has many hidden themes that your child might pickup on while reading this tale. "The Gingerbread Man" supports the idea that women are mearly the creaters of life and house keepers, and warns young children of the consequences of being arrongant and disrespecting your maker.Even with these hidden themes any child should enjoy this story.

4-0 out of 5 stars fairy tales and popular culture
The story of "The Gingerbread Man" has for centuries enlightened the hearts of its young readers. It has helped to redefine the way that popular cuture work helps to shape an individual's way of interpreting the ideological work that the story portrays. That utopian feel to it; where people want to see the hero win in the end and come up on top.In fact the gingerbread man gets eaten in the end, which goes against that utopian type of fairy tale that the public genre tends to enjoy more. But for some reason this fairy tale has been one that against all odds, has remained popular, and entertaining and plain old FUN.Which is what the everyday reader wants to read, something that is fun and entertaining when it comes to fairy tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful version of the classic tale
Lovely illustrations and repeating, predictable text. The illustrations are "old fashioned" looking and were drawn in ink then colored with watercolors and gouache. A classic tale about a gingerbread cookie man that gets up and runs away when he is released from the oven and leads many on a long chase. My children want me to read this story over and over again! There are many versions of this story in print but we especially like this one. As a bonus, the recipe for gingerbread cookies is on the back cover. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The myths (fascinating) are clearly presented, with bold-face type stressing important points, but the reading is interrupted by commentaries in the margins. The introductory remarks are often written in such convoluted style that they are more confusing than illuminating. I may be biased having had Dr. Devinney for a Prof a few times in the past, but this book is so well organized and clear that I recommend it to anyone. I was espically impressed with the structure!

4-0 out of 5 stars Gave me the creeps..in a good way!
I was riveted to this book from the first page.Very visually appealing and written in a light-hearted way, it is a great guide for "ghost-chasers" and those who just love to see weird places.I also love how the authors never judge someone based on their personal testimony about places and events in the book and believe me, there are some wacked-out stories that you think just can't be true!I have only owned the book for a week and already have visited about 1/2 dozen of the places mentioned.I have even planned future weekend trips around some of the creepier areas in the book.Great fun!It is hard to tell where some of the things mentioned are at...specific directions are few and far between and that would be my only problem with the book. You won't be sorry you bought this book...it has something for everyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This story is one of the Cinderella tales however this one is from Mexico.A young girl goes and cooks for the governor, and the governor is amazed by the taste of the meals that this girl can cook. However Domitila's mother dies and she must return home. The prince wanting to taste the wonderful food again goes out and searches for the woman who can cook a feast out of weeds.Although the governor faces some hardships and dishonest people in the end finds Domitila and marries her. This is a wonderful take off of the classic Cinderella story.I like it because it has Mexican traditions in it and the illustrations are wonderful. This book would be great to use as an introduction to different cultures. If I were to use this in my classroom I would try to get other countries versions of Cinderella so that they children could see even more differences and similarities in the stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now including culture, morals, and interest for boys
The story of a Mexican Cinderella character, this book is beautifully done with warmly coloured oil on canvas paintings that poignantly draw to mind the dry Mexican landscape. Most importantly, the illustrator has resisted the urge to create perfect characters, and instead presents a pleasant looking "Cinderella" with bland features and a square jaw, perhaps because the story is based on the family legend of the Rivero family of Hidalgo, Mexico. The author's text is mostly traditional for a fairy tale, but includes Spanish words with translations on the back page. The plot holds more interest than the traditional Cinderella tale, as the Prince is a Governor's son who begins the story haughty and spoiled, but while on a quest for the girl who makes delicious nopales (edible cactus, made by the common people), changes into a person of worth who can truly love a girl of the common people. This focus and character development of the often forgotten prince may make this tale more interesting to boys, as the male character is the hero on a quest, rather than the reward at the end of a girl's suffering.Furthermore, the tale is woven of realistic elements, rather than the fairy godmother, singing mice, and glass slipper of tradition, as it is explained why the father remarries, and includes a period of grief after the mother's death. However, beyond the plot and setting, the author waxes moralistic, presenting the likeable, yet lifeless Domitila as a goody-goody with a loving heart who follows her mother's instructions to "do every task with care, and always add a generous dash of love."Additionally, the text is framed in proverbs, presented both in English and Spanish, on the subjects of love and work, which add "atmosphere," but may get too sermonic to hold the attention of a child.Includes appealing history of the tale, as well as a recipe for Domitila's nopales on the last page.
