5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love It!
My mom bought me this book because I'm a pagan that loves fantasy. She was right that I would love it. The pictures are beautiful, and the writing is just as good. This is the perfect fantasy book! A must have for all fantasy lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars LET IT TAKE YOU TO A MAGIC PLACE...............
If you love fantasy and wizardry, this is a MUST HAVE for your collection. Every time I read this book I feel as if I've been swept to another realm filled with magic, whimsy, and beauty. One of the reasons that I love this book is because not only is it very intersting to read, but it has just as much....if not more, illustrations-artwork, as it does literature. The artwork in the book has so much detail that I notice something new everytime I read it. This book breaks down every aspect of a "wizard". Anything that you every wondered about, or wanted to know about a wizard is in this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and beautiful, artistic and poetic
This beautifully illustrated, poetically imaginative book will delight your mind and your eyes. Tom Cross uses his great skills as an illustrator and his deep imagination to create a work that is fun and enjoyable. With staff in hand and tongue in cheek the author takes the reader on a journey of beauty, reverence for nature, history, fantasy, and every other place you'd like to go with a genuine, down-to-earth, honest-to-goodness wizard as guide. One of the best books I've read, pure delight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thor give me strength/ gib mir kraft
If you're looking for a good cheap book on norse mythology then you should buy this book. It starts off with an introduction which tell the kind of role these myhs played in the lives of the norse. It also helps set you up with some information on some of the god's and how these myths came into being.
4-0 out of 5 stars Must-have reference.
Finally I've found it: the book of tales of Odin, and Thor, and Bifrost, and Ragnarok! What a pleasure to read the tales that inspired so much of the world's fantasy literature! Here you'll find the background stories behind and the likes of Beowulf, the Nibelungenlied or the Volsungs' Saga, and obviously the roots of Professor Tolkien's own Middle-Earth mythology, so numerous are the similarities.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This book is truly wonderful! The author captures the spirit of the Norse times perfectly. He keeps the myths true to the originals and manages to make it an exciting read. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Norse mythology and to whoever enjoys a good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A VeryInspiring Read
Well, it took some years, but I finally finished reading Campbell's, "Masks of God" series and I must say I agree with another reviewer as Campbell has indeed saved the best for last.
5-0 out of 5 stars Weaving of many golden threads
I've used Campbells' works and derivatives thereof as source material before; however, this is the first time I've sat down and read it cover to cover, instead of a chapter here, a section there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peering into the ancient past for the myths of mankind
"Primitive Mythology" is the first book of four "Masks of God", which surveys the "power of myth" from the beginning of mankind's known history. It is not the easiest of reading. There are frequent breaks in the form of long quoted passages. In the latter part of the book Campbell catalogues the diffusion, or spread, of mythic themesfrom the Paleolithic to the Neolithic, which I found tedious, in part because I have no previous background. But beyond a little tedium and some dense prose, this book is immensely rewarding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A captivating picture book story
Anklet For A Princess: A Cinderella Story From India is an fabulous adaptation of the East Indian story "Nagami" (Jewel of the Snake), a legend that in many ways resembles the classic fairy tale Cinderella. The young woman Cinduri is overburdened with work from her stepmother and stepsister, and receives barely enough to eat in return. But Godfather Snake learns of her troubles and helps her attend the village's annual Navaratri Festival dressed in the most beautiful golden-threaded sari and diamond anklets, and there she wins the heart of the Prince. A captivating picture book story commendably written by Lila Mehta, deftly adapted by Meredith Brucker, and wondrously illustrated in full color by Youshan Tang, Anklet For A Princess would make a welcome and popular addition to any school or community library picture book collection. ... This is the best of the Lady Cottington books.Ever wonder why the Faeries like her so? Get this and find out

4-0 out of 5 stars Cottingtonia without a Pythonian influence
Unlike its Cottington-Archive predecessors "Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book," "Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Journal," and "Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells," the Fairy Album is a work entirely by Brian Froud (without Monty Python alumnus Terry Jones taking on any of the writing) that delves into the family history of Angelica Cottington, diarist of the Pressed Fairy Book and sister to the inventor whose contraptions made Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells possible.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
I really liked this book.I'm so glad that Brian Froud continued on with the Cottington story. When I first heard about Brian Froud back in the early 90's, it was very difficult to find Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy's in stock.I had to order it from England. The art is so original, I have just about all of Froud's books.I'm alittle disappointed though that this artist has become mainstream (i.e. Hot Topic).Froud did not disappoint his fans with Lady Cottington's Fairy Album. The storyline was interesting and still original. You have to get this book if you got the first. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SUPERNATURAL HEALTH
Generational family curses are certainly issues to look at. However - the message of healing, wholeness and deliverance goes much further. My recommendation of a book to read is SUPERNATURAL HEALTH - the ISBN of the book is 0975595741 and the author is Samuel Townsend. Generational family curses are just a piece - finding healing and wholeness and prosperity in every area of your life is a function of the gospel. You will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth you know will set you FREE
This book is life-changing. I have given countless copies away to the people I love. God has blessings awaiting you to replace these generational curses. If you are tired of struggling with the same old thing, get this book to get set free for good. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay little primer on Christmas worldwide.
With the Christmas season coming in less than three months, it was timefor me (a certifiable Christmas nut) to begin reading about my favoriteholiday. In "Christmas Customs Around the World", author HerbertWernecke produced a brief history of the holiday's observances throughoutthe world and its most cherished symbols.Writing in essence a religiousbook, Dr. Wernecke makes a good point of injecting a Christian perspectiveinto Yuletide symbols of otherwise pagan origin, and his cheerful writingstyle gives you the impression that he took delight in writing the book. His coverage of Christmas celebrations in different countries appears tocome from varied sources, his favorite being verbatim accounts fromProtestant missionaries. Not unexpectedly, some countries are discussed inmore detail than others, and information on some lands is quite dated.Ialso noticed in the narrative what appears to be a slightly condescendingattitude towards non-Christians when mentioning Christmas celebrations inmission countries.Dr. Wernecke still succeeds in reassuring the reader ofthe spiritual joy and true meaning of Christmas amid the crasscommercialization of the season. To top it off, he includes at the end ofthe book a series of interesting Christmas recipes from the differentcountries he profiled. ... This book is amazing! We are blessed to have an older hardcover copy of this book in our public library that is so lovingly worn, it's a treat to borrow it and read it as a family! My boys adore these stories and I plan to share these with my grandchildren one day...if my boys don't beat me to it!Wonderful book!Check it out for yourself and see!:o)

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of fairy-tales !
I grew up with my great-grandmother's first-edition, from the early 1890's. The stories are lush and eloquent, unequivocally imaginative. Recently, I bought my niece a current copy. I am overjoyed to see the gorgeous original illustrations which, I had fallen in love with, are included in the later editions. If you are able, I do highly recommend purchasing the rest of the books in the series. Any child will be thoroughly delighted. You will happily discover your child's vocabulary considerably enhanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The Fairy Book series by Andrew Lang is not politically correct.I don't think these will be around for long or they'll be "fixed" such as is emerging with Irish fairy tales.

Editorial Review

Three little girls spare no mercy to Lon Po Po, the granny wolf, in this version of Little Red Riding Hood where they tempt her up a tree and over a limb, to her death. The girls' frightened eyes are juxtaposed against Lon Po Po's menacing squint and whirling blue costume in one of the books numerous three-picture sequences, which resemble the decorative panels of Chinese tradition. Through mixing abstract and realistic images with complex use of color and shadow, artist and translator Young has transformed a simple fairy tail into a remarkable work of art and earned the 1990 Caldecott Medal in doing so. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars terrified mother
The story goes beyond bad. This is a story of three little girls that torture and kill the wolf in a premeditated way. My 4 year-old son was very sad after someone read the story to him in a school interview to preschool. He said to me that it was a bad story, and the girls have done "bad choices". I can't believe this is in the list of books recommended for 4 and 5's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever girls defeat the wolf
This is a rare childrens book about how three little girls defeat the wolf. It's not about how beautiful they are or are not but on the choices they make. It's a story I love to read to my 18 month old baby. She often asks her father and I to read it to her. Plus, the art work is stunning.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ancient Greek's handbook
"Theogony" is one of, if not "the", original sources of Greek mythology. Hesiod tells us the full genealogy and origins of the Greek gods, and how the hegemony of Zeus was established after bitter fights and prolific intercourse with godesses and human females. Perhaps the most impressive part of this poem is the story about the god Typhoon. Hesiod depicts a horrific set of disasters that happened to the Earth, with Typhoon apparently being an unimaginable electric storm. Scholars like Immanuel Velikovsky have taken this episode as proof that many centuries ago, Venus and Mars, then wandering cosmic bodies, came very close to each other in a location near the Earth, which presumably caused our planets rotation to stop, with the following earthquakes, electric storms and the like. In fact, reading that passage by Hesiod strongly seemed to me to be the writing of very old memories of a defining catastrophe that left an indelible mark on human memory. Be that true or not, the poem is very powerful.5-0 out of 5 stars Ian Myles Slater on: West's Hesiod Translation
Some of the other reviews offered with M.L. West's translation of Hesiod's "Theogony" and "Works and Days" for the Oxford World's Classics actually refer to Dorothea Wender's verse translation of the same works, plus a charming version of the collection of lyrics attributed to Theognis, published in the Penguin Classics. That is a worthwhile version -- although the joining of the peasant-oriented Boeotian Hesiod to the mainly aristocratic, and partly Athenian, "Theognis" corpus is a little odd.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Classical translations I have ever read
Penguin translations often go too far in pursuit of a contemporary and popular sound, for instance in the infamous Rieu translations of Homer, with Athena "dancing attendance on Odysseus like a lover"; but this one is perfect, probably the best of the entire Penguin Classics collection. The jewel in this excellent book is the translation of Hesiod's WORKS AND DAYS; a translation of exceptional quality, worthy of being mentioned in one breath with Robert Fagles and C.Day Lewis.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lets not forget the artist!
I loved that Art that goes with this book.Mystical and subtle, they really take you to an other world altered state!
5-0 out of 5 stars The ideas and dream-scape art in this book are intriquing.
This book is about animals that come to us in dreams.Hillman encourages us not to turn them into "dream symbols" because in so doing we lose the animal.Instead we should recognize it as real, as choosing to come to us from the great unconscious. He suggests that we honor the animal for being present by asking it why it appeared in the dream."What is the animal offering you by coming into your life in the dream?"Through exploration of this idea, Hillman feels we can regain our kinship with animals. He offers the exciting idea that animals are trying to communicate with us in order to stop their exploitation and extinction. The ideas offered in this book are of interest to anyone who appreciates and respects life in this time when many species are driven to the brink of survival. The artwork is hauntingly beautiful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The kind of stories that don't exist anymore.
Let's face it, the majority of stories we tell each other these days is nothing but gossip. Gone are the days of fables and poems and limericks. Stories like this are considered bedtime rituals for kids rather than something important that we can learn from.
4-0 out of 5 stars great book but...
it has less correlation to traditional runes that i would have liked. For instance, the traditional futhark order isn't observed, nor are the traditional names of the runes given. However, the pictures and stories are wonderful, and the book lends a new and creative perspective to runework which is at once easy to understand and very cryptic.

5-0 out of 5 stars The magic of storytelling is reborn here
This book is a series of fantastic retellings of old stories of myth that are associated with the runic alphabet of Northern European prehistory. The Rune of Protection, for instance, is a retelling of "The Waking of Angantyr" from the Elder Edda. All these associative stories are incorporated into a mystical world known as "Elf-Land", both illuminated by Dr. Berk and envisioned by the reknowned fantasy artist, Brian Froud (most known for his book "Faeries" and having done conceptual art for the Jim Henson movies "Labyrinth" and "Dark Crystal")

5-0 out of 5 stars So much more then a how to book...
This book is just right for anyone, like me, who is just starting out on their journey with the art of mehndi (or henna.) The instructions are straight-forward with everythingfrom mixing your own henna to basic and complex designs and an excellent resource guide in the back. The images throughout are beautiful and somehow inspirational. Not only all that, but the book gives history on henna as well as the a look into the spiritual nature of the craft. I love how Loretta Roome dives into the symbolism found in mehndi from many countries. It is just such a wonderful book, I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious Art of Henna
As a teacher I appreciate this book as a wonderful tool for beginners as well as the advanced. It gives amazing pictures to study, recipes to follow, and also vast facts and deep educational bytes to take away from this craft. Henna is so old of an art form people don't really realize. Henna has been a part of many faiths. Jewish, Egyptian, Hindi, and many more. With it's various meanings and religious symbolism. Very rich material for everyone to learn from. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am thrilled that my children have found it fascinating too. They are 10 and 11 years old too! We love and adore Henna!! Great book. Thank you.
