5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest Bloodstain texts I have read. OUTSTANDING!
This is one of the finest reference books I have had the pleasure to read.It is easy to understand, no far out explanations.I believe this bookshould be on the shelf of any and all investigators, new or old.The tableof contents was very informative. You are taken from the history of thisdisipline, all the way to case study.Nothing is missed and you can carrythe book by yourself!!Credit was properly given to those that were first, there was no attempt to make one believe the editors were the"first" to discover this disipline.Photos often assisted text. I believe this is necessary for those investigators who do not see this asmuch as others. There was even a glossary !! EXCELLENT WORK !I lookforward to treating my eyes to the next book by James & Eckert

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in Criminal Law and Enforcement
Anyone involved in law enforcement or Crimial Law will cherish this informative, well written text. It takes a very complicated, mind numbing subject and pilots the reader in an organized, comprehensible manner to awell rounded understanding of the subject. This one should be requiredreading for all law students and Criminal Law practitioners. AMasterpiece!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A dissenting opinion....
In order to temper the unrestrained exuberance of the formerreviews, I think it is appropriate to point out what I believe are a couple of major shortcomings of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is an excellent source for information on learning the bones, how to side them, and many other interesting aspects of osteology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book!
I recently purchased the Shooting Incident Reconstruction book by Lucien Haag and would highly recommend it for every forensic scientist who may examine this type of evidence. University's offering forensic science courses, as well as all forensic laboratory's, should have a copy available to their students / practitioners. The book contains an absolute wealth of material concerning the subject matter. Jim Hamby, Ph.D. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of On-scene guide for crisis negotiators
Good 1st book to read on those wanting to be Negotiators in the Law Enforcement field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition To The Field
Frederick Lanceley's "On-Scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators" is a long needed compendium of technique and definition in the field of crisis negotitations. Mr. Lanceley's vast experience has enabled him to providetechniques based on real-life situations not just theory. The volume isarranged in a concise, easy-to-reference format which should be a part ofevery negotiator's "Ready Kit". One of the most important pointsabout this book is the fact that it addresses the types of situations faceddaily by police negotiators. Suicide intervention, long a subject ignoredin many negotiations seminars, is given in-depth treatment. In addition, the entire book is an interesting read. His account of his involvement atRuby Ridge is fascinating. I would recommend this book to anyone involvedin the field, police commanders and anyone interested in crisisintervention.

3-0 out of 5 stars A difficult read
The title of this book, should be "Ballistics".There is little information on the actual wounds, but more on the grains and callibers of the bullets. The book has black and white photos, which makes it very difficult to see stippling, powder burns and soot. You will learn detailed information about bullets and the brands (if you can rememeber all that), unfortunately, not much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking
Very informative about the destructive power a bullet can have.As wrong as this may sound, if you own guns and have children, this is a good book to buy.It is difficult to explain to a child what a bullet can do to a human being. With this, you can show them.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook on the subject of firearm injuries
This text should be in the library of any reader who has an interest in the topic of guns and the injuries they produce. While written with the practising forensic pathologist in mind, the book is appropriate forinvestigators, attorneys and other healthcare providers. The discussions offirearms and their features are very good and should help those withlimited knowledge about guns understand what they do, how they do it andthe terminology used in the field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE CSI OF COMPUTER EVIDENCE!!
Are you a law enforcement officer, system administrator, IT professional, legal professional or a computer forensics student? If you are, this book is for you! Author Christopher LT Brown, has done an outstanding job of writing a great book by focusing on the first two phases of the computer forensics process: computer evidence collection and preservation.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Book on the Subject
This is a timely book as we are hearing more and more about the U.S. military and intelligence agencies collecting the computers used by terrorists. This same trend is appearing in conventional law enforcement. The amount of information that can be stored on a computer is, of course huge, also important is the transient: What web site is the computer viewing? What e-mail system is on-line? What can be gotten from the router being used?
4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
It seems that a lot of books on forensics concentrate on making a disk image of the hard drive being examined, filtering the information on the disk, and presenting it in proper format for court use. However, collecting and preserving the evidence is much more than imaging the hard disk.If the computer is still on then evidence may be in memory, potential evidence may be on routers, proxy servers, etc. This book details this part of forensic evidence gathering, an area often just skimmed over in other computer forensics texts. This is a critical aspect of investigation because it does not matter how well your filtering works and how much evidence you obtain if your data preservation was not done correctly and the evidence is inadmissible in court.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Book Available on the Subject
The advent of fire arms spelt the end of the armored knight of old. Until very recently the soldier on the battlefield had no protection from being shot. The problem is that the only materials that would offer suitable protection was steel, and steel is so heavy that it is impractical to protect more than a small part of the body. Usually only the head was protected using helmets that offered some protection from the fragments of shrapnel of grenades and exploding artillery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Criminal Interrogation and Confessions: bias and distortion at work
Old material that has been rehashed a number of times, but it is necessary to read it in order to understand the bias that is inherent in contemporary investigations. It is clearly illustrated that there is no actual scientific approach, no consideration of alternative explanations, but instead there is only an attempt to obtain confessions.Inbau, Reid, and others have never included consideration of other, more scientifically supported discussions such as those by Gudjunsson and G. Wells. The writing in the book is not very good.It is overly simple in style, and the organization is also simple, but not informative.Read the book for history and for understanding, but not for factual, supported knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the interrogator's Bible
Decades after its first edition, this is still considered the best work on interrogating a criminal suspect. The authors walk you through every step, towards the goal of clearing the innocent and eliciting confessions fromthe guilty. No detail or nuance is left unexplored, not only of thesuspect's behavior, but of your own as well. This book is a must read foranyone involved in criminal justice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece -- The Art and Science of Interviewing and Interrogation
This book is the benchmark by which all other books on the art and science of interviewing and interrogation should be measured. It is truly a grand tour in every sense of the term. The text covers the greatest discoveries, techniques and practices in the field, and provides valuable insights by the authors, who are widely acknowledged experts and seasoned practitioners. The historical basis for truth-determining techniques is discussed at some length. However, the book really shines in its coverage of interviewing and interrogation theories and techniques developed over the past eighty years, paralleling the great advancements in law enforcement and psychology. The authors present a concise, insightful and balanced examination of the significant theories and theoreticians in the field, all the while drawing upon their substantial knowledge and expertise when evaluating and assessing the various theories and techniques discussed throughout the book.Their observations on interrogation ethics post 9-11 are thought-provoking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take a bite out of this book
Other odontology texts devote a mere few pages or maybe a chapter on bitemark evidence. This book is solely devoted to bitemarks and contains everything that you wanted to know about the topic, including minutae that would make an odontologist's toes curl. The text begins with a rather detailed history of landmark cases that used bitemark evidence to identify perpetrators of a crime (see Ted Bundy). The rest of the book takes the reader through the sequential process of bitemark identification, from the anatomy and physiology of bitemarks to the technical aspects of gathering, studying, and interpreting data from a typical bitemark case. The book is laden with color and b/w photos. There is also a very detailed section on presentation of bitemark evidence in court, as well as the controversial topic of reliability of bitemark data as the sole means of positively identifying criminals in a court of law.Indeed, the book is concept-heavy and overly detailed for the conventional forensics enthusiast (they may, dare I write it, find it a boring read);but if you're in the profession of forensics, whether it is pathology, odontology, or anthropology, or are thinking about pursuing it down the road, this book would serve as a terrific resource in your forensics armamentarium.

4-0 out of 5 stars a useful source
I found this book to be both interesting and informative and also very useful in writing a crime story. It will definitely give you an idea of how the cops in your story should act at a crime scene and what they should and shouldn't do.The book is also helpful even if your main character isn't a cop at all.I do have a couple of complaints about the book though. For one thing, the author gives way too much detail on some things.Like the fingerprints. The chapters on fingerprints seemed to be aimed more at someone who wants to become a fingerprint expert instead of just writing fiction about them.I found parts of the fingerprint chapters to be extremely boring and I even skipped through a small portion of it.Although some amount of detail can add realism to a story, I really cannot understand why anyone would want to put THAT much detail on fingerprints into a work of fiction.Secondly, the author slips into stories of personal experience several times in the novel. Most of the stories are interesting and could help a writer, but a couple of them just seem to be rambling by the author and really have nothing to add that would help anyone in writing a novel. But despite these complaints, I still found the book to be very useful and, for the most part, very interesting.I would definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scene of the Crime:The Howdunit Series
A great source of information on the field of Crime Scene Investigation. This books gives a great comprehensive overview of the field and how it may work from small towns to larger cities.A great source to find out if it may be something you would like to get into as a career.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fingerprint in the Howdunit series

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text
This book is an outstanding reference on crime scene investigation. Gardner writes from experience after many years with the US Army's Criminal Investigation Division, an agency known for their superb crime scene skills. Gardner's book covers the many facets of crime scene investigation with particular emphasis on documentation, one of the most important aspects. He presents the Army's 18-step method for crime scene processing which the reader will find to be an excellent model to follow.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many problems
I found way too many problems with this text.I perform computer forensics investigations for a living, and would not recommend this book. There is too much focus on the DriveSpy program, and much of the information is repeated from chapter to chapter. This is an example of the reviewers not actually taking a look at the book. Your best bet is to purchase the book by Warren Kruse.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just ok...
As a new examiner, I found this book somewhat useful, but I thought the book was edited horribly. It looks to me as though the publisher hired an English major to edit a Computer Forensics book... too bad... 1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book used! You won't be able to use the CD
This book represents the core of what is wrong with corporate America today. This book is packaged with a CD that has software on it used throughout the book. What they don't tell you anywhere is that you must register the software using a unique and one time only coupon in the cd pouch.Furthermore the software then expires in 120 days.To not mention this limitation that basically makes the book useless for resale is very deceitful on the part of the publisher and the company that supplied the software.Never have I seen such B.S. before as this when it comes for games that publishers play!!!THIS INFORMATION SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN BIG BOLD LETTERS -- YOU CANNOT RESELL THIS BOOK DUE TO THE ONE-TIME USE OF THE ENCLOSED CD SOFTWARE -- ...
