5-0 out of 5 stars Good summary for the USA
Quite a short book, but it's not a huge topic. Oriented towards the forensic science arena in the USA, it doesn't offer any tips for internationalizing its summaries, so the international reader is left with little idea of the differences in the way the field is structured. That said, it does summarize the opportunities available for general criminalists, pathologists, toxicologists, crime scene managers and so on, and gives rough salary, training estimates, brief job descriptions, along with example job advertisements for each section.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Potential Students
This book is for any potential students who wish to explore careers in Forensic Science.I purschased this book out of plain curiosity, and this field of science is truly amazing to practically no end.Forensic Science is a fascinating career to discover, and if you are the type of student who needs constant stimulation then you should read this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Dark Side of International Capital Mobility
At a time when a swarm of new books on illicit transactions and dirty money are vying for readers' attention, it is worthwhile to come back to this authoritative study that was published in December 2004 under the auspices of the Institute for International Economics. This book provides the first comprehensive effort to assess the effectiveness of the anti-money laundering (AML) regime, initially put in place to protect the integrity of financial institutions against the abuse of drug lords and criminal traffickers, and which was extended after 9/11 to include the combating of terrorism financing (the whole endeavor now runs under the acronym AML/CFT).
5-0 out of 5 stars A discussion of methodologies used to hide revenues
Written by a senior economist and criminology professor along with a former director of the Division of International Finance of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Chasing Dirty Money: The Fight Against Money Laundering is a no-nonsense discussion of methodologies used to hide revenues gained from a wide variety of crimes and how to block such assets from being transferred and perpetuated. Chapters clarify laundering mechanisms, from simiply smuggling cash out of the country to using casinos, lotteries, and horse races to lose a little betting but receive clean payoff in issued checks, to taking out single premium insurance policies for which the premium is paid in an upfront lump sum rather than annual installments - then later redeeming these policies at a discount. Further chapters discuss protecting the integrity of financial systems, combating predicate crimes connected to money laundering, confronting such global evils as terrorism and kleptocracy or corruption that rely heavily on money laundering, and much more. A sober, serious-minded resource, an absolute must-read for all economic students and professionals, and an eye-opening revelation for lay readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The next step and a must have for those woring with felons
This is an excellent book to continue the journey of understanding the Criminal Mind. This book is more detailed. It shows the drawbacks and the difficulty working with this population. It examines every approach from the past up to and including the present in trying to change Criminal behavior. Why methods have failed and what holds promise. Most of the research was done by a man named Samuel Yochelson who shared his ideas and work with Dr Samenow. Together they untangle the maze that has baffled many on this topic. A must have for those working in the criminal justice fields.

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers why criminals are that way and how to fix them.
"Conventional wisdom" about criminals is wrong. Dr. Yochelson found why criminals are the way they are and how to habilitate them. Volume I exposes the areas in which criminals are different than responsible people. Volume II is a method for correcting those differences, but, as joke says, "they gotta wanna change." Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of good paper
An instructor actually chose this text for a class.I know the choices were limited because this is a rather obscure subject, but there has to be something better than this!I have never seen a textbook biased until reading this one. This guy is clearly anti-union and is hung up on "Godfather"-type transactions. This book is absolutely worthless.

This book has NOTHINGto do with Forensic Accounting-the title is VERY deceptive-if you want a history of crime like who the Mafia is thengo ahead and waste your time.....bad book

5-0 out of 5 stars Financial Investigation & Forensic Accounting Review
G.A. Manning does an excellent job of taking complex subjects, like law and accounting, and makes them interesting and easy to read. The book is a superb reference to the beginner by way of providing a broad overview of the many facets that forensic examiners are exposed to.The book is also a superb reference to the advanced reader as it reiterates in detail many of the audit program, internal control and evidentiary procedures. As a Certified Management Accountant in pursuit of the Certified Forensic Accounting designation, I enjoyed the book greatly. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook for intro class
I suppose the most important question is why are you interested in this book.It would make a good textbook for an intro type class in this area or would be good for someone who doesn't know DNA analysis, but is involved in criminalistics. The level of detail is insufficient for anyone who actually understands the molecular approaches. It spends a fair bit of time talking about cases and HOW this particular approach was once useful. These are interesting little stories, but the book really didn't give me what I wanted.I have a background in molecular genetics and was interested in making a career shift to DNA forensics. There was little of value for me because it never really got to the details.I think it would be good for a class because it provides historical perspective on the now outdated techniques that would be important background for someone who never knew anything about the development of the previous techniques and only learned what is current today, but to someone who has that background...seemed like it just added a new chapter to an otherwise outdated book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for the beginner
Having left behind my interest in genetics in order to pursue tax accountancy, I've always been fascinated by accounts of DNA typing. This book provides a wonderful introduction that is accessible to even the novice geneticist like myself.Much of the information Rudin and Inman give is quite practical; with some help from a friend who works in a medical lab I was able to set up my own electrophoresis gels and PCR.A word of caution to the amateur, however:make sure you practice before drawing any conclusions from the "evidence."My wife, Amy, wouldn't speak to me for a week after I claimed that a stain on our bed linen did not match my DNA.It turned out that she had spilled some ice cream.

3-0 out of 5 stars vivid introduction to forensic genotyping techniques
Nice figures, photos, schemes, and U.S. tables; lively comparisons show that authors are good teachers. Though technical part of the book outdates fast necessarily (acronym SNP has not been coined in 1996 yet), it is a shame that an interpretation part of the book neglects the current knowledge. Bayes theorem is known since 1763 and, nevertheless, likelihood ratio is not even mentined in the book! Books of Evett and Weir or of Robertson and Vignaux cannot be substituted by this book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and out of date
I bought this book as I need to be better at taking photographs during investigations of workplace injury incidents and hoped it would help.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth a purchase
The author completely misses the mark with the title. It should be "How to be Fire Photographer Groupie".The author is apparently a civilian photographer with no law enforcement , crime scene investigation experience. The major topics covered are private investigator fire photographer applications with no real technical advice. He seems to justify the lack of technical advice by stating early on that he assumes the reader knows this information. My guess is the author lacks real world experience and does not know what really happens at a crime scene. Take a pass on this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Human Trackers
Anyone that has been a tracker in the Military or in Law Enforcement already has my utmost respect. I have taken tracking training from both Joel Hardin and David Scott-Donelan and would love to spend some "Dirt Time" with David Diaz. I thoroughly enjoyed his book and I highly recommend it for any type of tracking both civilian and/or military. This is the How-to for human tracking.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book heavily focused on military tracking
This book is primarily focused on the needs the military tracker, and that is the author's background. It does, indeed, attempt to present a systematic approach to the subject and largely succeeds. Although I am primarily interested in civilian search and rescue tracking, I found a lot to learn and consider in this book. An excellent complement to this book is "The SAS Guide to Tracking" by Bob Carss. Tom Brown's "The Science and Art of Tracking" also deserves a place on the tracker's bookshelf as well as Jack Kearney's "Tracking: A Blueprint for Learning How" and Tom Brown's "Field Guide to Nature Observation and Tracking."

4-0 out of 5 stars Well ballanced
Like most books on man tracking there was to much focuss on hunting not tracking. Not all tracking is for clossing with the enemy. The book that does apply to the civilian tracker was well ballanced and points well made. This would make a great 1st tracking book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars practical, detailed and helpful
In this appropriately named "Checklist and Field Guide" Vernon J. Geberth distills the complexities of criminal investigation into a series of helpful checklists and charts. The reading is informative (though not always engaging) and he provides a necessary resource for law enforcement personnel as well as a helpful guide for authors writing books involving criminal investigation or police procedures.

Flesh and Bone was required reading for my course in forensic anthropology. I found it very informative and interesting. I like how many of the legal terms were translated. The book has inspired me to pursue this field of study even further. I recommend it to students who are nervous about the sciences and cannot get through alot of technical terminology, and for those who are curious about crime scene investigation. 3-0 out of 5 stars Attention to Detail is Important
Attention to detail is important in almost all areas of endeavor, but especially so in forensic science. This book violates that fundamental in the first chapter. In describing the trial of Theodore Robert Bundy for the Chi Omega Sorority murders, it refers to the testimony of a certain forensic odontologist, and says that as a result of the testimony of the forensic odonotologist, Bundy was executed. This is incorrect.Bundy was not executed for the Chi Omega murders, but for the subsequent murder of a young girl.Forensic science figured prominently in that conviction also, but it was microanalysis and shoetrack comparison, not forensic odontology, that was instrumental in sending Bundy to the electric chair.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals is easy to read but a wealth of forensic information
Forensic Scientists Max Houck and Jay Siegel have just released a forensic science text which is perfect for beginners but offers much for seasoned scientists. The book's thoroughness is revealed across its 672 pages. Topics include a discussion of criminal justice and forensic science, analytical tools and introductions to biological science, chemical science, and physical science. Forensic science's relationship with law is in the concluding chapter.
