4-0 out of 5 stars Really good!
This book caught my eye in the library and I plan on buying a copy for my own shelves. It makes an excellent, basic reference book. But,I have many problems with the editing of this book, particularly toward the end (pages 246 and 254); unfortunately, that happens in many, many books: a lazy editor reads half or two-thirds of the work and thinks, this is pretty good, and then drops the entire matter.I have found, as an editor myself, that the second half of a book is usually of poorer quality than the first half. Nevertheless, as a reference, it is a great jumping-off point, if you are so inclined.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and interesting
I am using tis book frequently for reference in my quest to write aseries of mysteries. It has been very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great starting reference
As with all the "for Dummies" books, Forensics for Dummies is a great, quick reference and a wonderful starting point for anyone interested in the field.Written by a doctor and full of information that will surely entice anyone who is a fan of crime investigation shows, the book is laid out well and progresses through the entire method used by forensic scientists.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look further
Judge Pollak vacated and superseded the January 2002 opinion cited by another reviewer. Two U.S. Courts of Appeals have since held fingerprint evidence admissible.U. S. v. Mitchell, 365 F.3d 215 (3d Cir. 3004) and U.S. v. Crisp, 324 F.3d 261 (4th Cir. 2003).The Mitchell court rejected Cole's view that fingerprint evidence is not admissible under U.S. Supreme Court criteria for the admission of scientific opinion evidence.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of history of finger mark matching
The book gives a historical overview of fingerprinting and why anthropometry was more inefficient for the police in the beginning of the 20th century. It furthermore is somewhat critical on the conclusions that are drawn in this field, and the limitations that exist. Also it discusses possibilities that suspects are not found in the database of fingerprints whereas the fingerprints are actually in it. 3-0 out of 5 stars Cole's views should not be taken as gospel
Simon Cole makes good points, BUT it is important to note that he is a polemicist and not a fingerprint expert.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for the Professional Questioned Document Examiner
This first edition is a must have for the professional Questioned Document Examner.Excellent details in pen, ink, paper, indented writing Forensice Document Examination. Some methods of ink and pen identification qre not even covered in most Forensic Questioned Document Books, Not in the detail covered here. How do you know if an envelope has been steamed opened and reglued? What methods of page substitution are not covered in other tests? How can you quickly identify, beyond watermarks, if a page may not be consistent with others in a corporate agreement? Mr Ellen is truly a master Forensic Document Examiner. In my opinion he is the modern day version of Albert Osborn. My Osborn's Questioned Documents was the first complete book on Questioned Document Examination. It is dated now but Mr. Ellen's book covers it all. A great book. A must have for the 21st century.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK YOU CAN'T PUT DOWN
Dr Louis Cataldie does a great job of carrying you through the cases that are covered in this book. He is a very compassionate man and a great asset to the state of Lousiana. I would recommend this book with the highest rating I can give.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptionally different kind of read!
Coroner's Journal is not a Baton Rouge CSI. It is much more disturbing!Dr. Louis Cataldie will take your hand and walk you through the daily life of a coroner. You will feel the human-ness of the victims, their families, and most of all, Dr. Cataldie. This book is not a fictional account of "how exciting and sexy it is to be a coroner".It is pain, frustration, fear, paranoia, courage, love, determination and a first hand view of good triumphing evil.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mother of Pam Piglia Kinamore
Dr. Louis Cataldie is a compassionate and dedicated man who has devoted a great part of his life to helping family members left behind by the death of a loved one.Too bad the Baton Rouge serial killer case did not receive the national, nor the local, coverage it should have gotten. That is why it was so important that Dr. Cataldie had the courage to expose the inexperienced task force investigating these killings.

5-0 out of 5 stars The latest in Forensic Anthropology
This book does not contain a full overview of forensic anthropology, as a result it can't be used as an introduction text. However, it deals in depth with certain topics in forensic anthropology, which makes it perfect for advanced students in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts Straight To the Bone...
This is probably one of the best textbooks available on identifying human remains.I have found it to be fascinating reading plus I recently had the honor to meet Dr. Reichs. She most graciously took the time to autograph my copy of the book although she did mention that was the first time anyone had asked her to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forensic Osteology(Reichs)
This book was given to me as a gift and it is probably the most indepth book I own for the identification process.Little did the gift-giver know that the chapter Reichs includes on Human Rights is extraordinary, and isparamount in showing how Forensic Anthropology has grown over the years toinclude the aspect of international affairs and the impact human rightsplay in the field of forensic anthropology. I especially enjoyed thesection on Trauma Analysis and Race identification, the latter in beingthat there have recently been questions as to the accuracy of the toolsused to determine race albeit it has often generated controversy. Reich'shas a host of contributors, each unique in their field who go in depth toexamine traditional techniques and specialized methodologies which resultin an exceptional book. I give it five stars and a high recommendation toadd to any collection. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A good intro text only
I was originally excited for the update of this text. I was diappointed after such a long wait. The book is a good text for the basics of drug enforcement, but many of the focus areas are watered down. Where are the tactics and techniques for the street officer? In comparison to other high quality texts from CRC Press such as Geberth's Practical Homicide Investigation, Practical Drug Enforcement misses its mark. ... Read more

Editorial Review

If you were told there was a killer in your basement, you'd be legitimately concerned.Scientists have uncovered a virus living peacefully inside us that may strike out at us when our guard is down, but nobody seems to be listening.Potentially linked to such poorly understood diseases as multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and AIDS, this member of the herpes family (HHV-6) is thoroughly examined in science journalist Nicholas Regush's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars informative
The author presents viral research, the researchers, and the health industry in a manner that is informative and interesting for the reader. While the ending somewhat weak it is at least honest-no cure or conclusive proof has been established concerning HHV-6 - the author merely points the reader's interest towards the future. 5-0 out of 5 stars Virus Within
This book may give me my life back.I have researched my illness for eight years now, never giving up though everything I have tried from numerous allopathic specialists to numerous alternative healing practices.I have a virus-like disease (I always get the feverish malaise that precedes a herpes outbreak (I have Type I, thank goodness).Whatever this disease is, it flares up at the slightest stress of any type whatever (time pressure, a fight with my husband, annoyance at our idiotic President and his evil cronies, etc.) and causes me a lot of pain, stiffness and a host of other difficult physical symptoms. It has been diagnosed as fibromyalgia, but that's pretty much beside the point as there is no treatment for fibromyalgia.4-0 out of 5 stars dramatic science!
Regush has done the chronic disease communities a great favor. His chronicle--and expose--ought to lead to burgeoning research into HHV-6 and AIDS, as well as other mysterious ilnesses/syndromes.I read his book in one sitting, finding it fascinating.I remain unconvinced about HHV-6 as a dangerous epidemic despite my own chronic illness; however, there is much excellent research presented that HHV-6 is potentially dangerous for certain people. It is a strength of this book that Regush presents such excellent scientific research while simultaneously provoking the reader to question the manner in which such science is conducted in the United States because of professional competition, time constraints for broadening research, funding priorities, political leanings, and academe's limitations.I found the style of writing to be overly idiomatic--"hit the roof,", "bombed"--and felt concerned as I read that this media style might detract from the importance of the book's message in the minds of some readers.I highly reommend the book, nevertheless, and hope that the scientific community ispaying attention. ...
