4-0 out of 5 stars Crime Scense Investigations
This book is realy full of very good information for practice
5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Informative Book
This is a very good book for anyone looking to learn about forensic science and crime scene investigation but doesn't know that much about science. It is very informative and it has past cases and how they were solve, including the Ted Bundy case, Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka and many more. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars CSI can't lay out the facts like this
I'm not much of a TV watcher but when "Cold Case Files" or something like it is on, I'm glued to the television set.I'm fascinated by the field of forensic science and just how increasingly sophisticated it gets everyday. There is no such thing as the "perfect crime" as, literally, a drop of blood or a strand of human hair will place a criminal at the scene of the crime and lead to a conviction so I don't know why criminals (murderers in particular) keep trying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inside Look
This book would be great for anyone who is even the slightest bit interested in going into forensics.Dr. Baden shows how lots of different professionals work together to solve crimes. He tells about things like blood school and bug school and what goes on at forensics conventions, that most of the population wouldn't even dream of hearing! He goes into detail on a few key players in forensics: the renowned Henry Lee, and even some of the "bad guys," including the medical examiner who faked hundreds of autopsies and had many wrong people convicted.
2-0 out of 5 stars For the true crime junkies...
If you enjoy forensic science and true crime literature this book will keep you entertained. However, I don't think it is Dr. Baden's best work. The organization of the book was a bit scattered and overall, it can't decide if it is a textbook, an autobiography or a work of non-fiction.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Good.A Keeper.
The book meets all of my standards for 5 stars: Interesting subject, spell-binding story, and well-written. Plus Baden includes comments about the dummies who work as cops, attorneys, judges, medicos, and technicians. These people make life difficult for the real stars: competent cops, attorneys, judges, etc. I especially like how Baden walks you through what he does, commenting on the professional arcana of his craft. Any professional who fails to talk about his tools is suspect, in my book. This book will serve you well if youre writing about true crime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Former Friedrichs Student
As a graduate of The University of Scranton, with a B.S. in CJ, I had the honor of studying under the author of this text. 5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best....
As a college professor, and researcher/student of white collar crime,Friedrichs' Trusted Criminals is by far the best text available on thetopic. His extensive coverage of the wide array of actions constitutingwhite collar crime provides readers with a better understanding of thissometimes confusing topic. Also, his easy-to-follow writing style andexcellent use of examples facilitate comprehension of the material. It isapparent that a great deal of effort went into writing this book.Read more

Editorial Review

Had it not been for viruses, the U.S. and Canada might today be one country;the African slave trade may not have been as extensive; and the Spanish almost certainlywouldn't have conquered the Aztecs and other New World native peoples. In fact, viruseshave affected world history more extensively than most of us can imagine. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
I ordered three books on similar subjects, "Viruses, Plagues, and History", "Man and Microbes", and "Plagues and Peoples" at the same time. Each book has something different to recommend it.My least favorite was "Plagues and Peoples".The writing was pompous and cumbersome, and while the thesis of the book, that man's relationship to society and our planet is pathogenic, is interesting, it can be conveyed in one sentence. There is not a lot of readable material about the actual history of disease in the book.I got a lot more by far out of both "Man and Microbes" and "Viruses, Plagues, and History".Both of these books are filled with interesting facts and stories of how disease has impacted human history.I will definitely keep and re-read both books. As an earlier reviewer noted, the first section of "Viruses, Plagues, and History", entitled "Introduction to the Principles of Virology" is pretty intimidating. If the science bothers the reader too much, it really doesn't hurt to skip this chapter.Maybe the rest of the book will interest the non-scientific reader enough so he will go back and read this section later.Part Two of the book is entitled "Success Stories".It contains fascinating and very graphic descriptions of some very bad diseases and interesting stories about the effects these diseases have had on the course of history.Part Three is "Present and Future Challenges", about some of the newly emerging diseases that are making headlines today. The author is a true professional in the biomedical field, and in his preface, he tells about reading "Microbe Hunters" in junior high and how it inspired him in his education and career to meet many of the foremost experts on viral diseases and become one himself. I think this is a very, very interesting book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting quick read
Although this book is not exhaustive or comprehensive by any means, I thought it was a great quick read. It serves as an excellent introduction to several infamous plagues and illnesses. The histories that are recounted are by far the most entertaining parts of the book. If you are interested in medical/biological histories at an introductory level, or if you just want to know more about some intriguing viruses and bacterial infections, I suggest reading this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The focus on historical impact makes this book worthwhile.
It is a shame that the decisive impact of communicable diseases on history are typically underplayed in school books. This information needs to be known by every educated person. Dr. Oldstone's book provides both an account of medical progress and its context in social and cultural history. In meeting these goals, this book succeeds admirably. Dr. Oldstone writes well. His expertise shines in his understanding of critical events in scientific development, and his knowledge of the contributions of both well-known and obscure scientists indicates a mastery of the breadth of the field. This scholarship is enhanced by his personal interactions with many of the 20th Century's great virologists, many of them familiar names, including Salk, Sabin, Montagnier, Gallo and Enders, among others. Some of the best illustrations in the books come from Dr. Oldstone's own research.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bone Lady:Life as a Forensic Anthropologist
This is a wonderful book.It is fun to read about Mary Manheim's childhood and her career and the cases she has worked on.The short chapters focus on particular cases she has helped solve. It is sprinkled through out with stories of life in Louisiana.

2-0 out of 5 stars Skip it, its just fluff
Don't waste your time or money on this one as there are far better forensic books out there. This book was just a collection of short narratives reading more like a personal diary than any kind of scientific narrative laying out the facts of cases. I guess it lives up to its subtitle of "Life as a Forensic Anthropologist" in that she usually presents only HER part in each case with little presentation of the entire case. The forensic cases are not really the star of this book, the author is. I was frustrated with the lack of depth. Instead, read "The Body Farm" by Bill Bass. Excellent storytelling there! He gives you personal stories, but also provides all the fascinating forensic info to provide a complete picture for the cases he has investigated.

2-0 out of 5 stars No there there
I found this book quite tedious, since the author makes the fundamental mistake of thinking the subject of the book should be herself instead of her work. There is almost no information on forensic anthropology; her descriptions of cases are very short and center mainly on how she felt about them, rather than what the actual details were. From the cover and the blurbs I expected actual case histories; the book doesn't deliver. The book as written would really only be interesting to people who know the author personally. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Use it as an Intro and nothing more
This book is a good introduction for students that has never studied the subject or a student who has very little understanding in the processes involved in Forensic Anthro. There are some errors in the book though; this is annoying, and may add some confusion to the unsuspecting student.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Detecting Serial Killers
This book explains his career as a criminal profiler for the FBI. John Douglas solved unusual kinds of crimes done by those who kill or rape or torture because they enjoy it. Profiling requires "creative-type thinkers", not accounting or engineering types. They must work well both alone and in groups. They need good judgment based on instinct, which can't be defined in an objective nature. Douglas says serial killers are mostly made, not born. Most come from broken or dysfunctional homes, and are victims of some type of abuse. Real-life killers were used as models for "The Silence of the Lambs", "Red Dragon", and "Psycho". The modus operandi is what the offender does, the signature is why he does it (that doesn't change). Virtually all multiple killers are male. Chapter 2 gives an example of solving murders where there was only a vague eyewitness description.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sequel to Mindhunter
John Douglas continues showing the inside of the criminal mind in Journey. High Profile cases like O.J. Simpson are included.Other cases are also included that are not as well known such as Suzanne Collins, a Marine killed by a civilian on post.As with the first installment, not for the faint of heart or anyone offended by graphic descriptions or language.Well written and easily to understand, a real page turner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real Journey into Darkness
I have been an avid true crime reader for several years although this is the first book that I have read by John E. Douglas. This book makes you see the darkness that a lot of people seem to have inside and what they are prepared to do to realise their fantasies whatever the cost. I was not able to put down this book even though it filled me with anxiety and sadness because the title is true - he really does take you on a journey into Darkness, although John Douglases telling of these brutal cases is masterly. He explains even the most complicated of theories in a way that is understandable to all. After reading this book I have already ordered his other books and can't wait for them to be delivered. Gripping stuff!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars should be a bestseller
This book isn't just for enforcement people. For someone like me who isn't a law officer and just wants to understand how terrorists and drug traffickers work, this book is great. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Deatiled and Highly Informative Work!
I became acquainted with James R. Richard's Transnational Criminal Organizations, Cybercrime, and Money Laundering : A Handbook for Law Enforcement Officers, Auditors, and Financial Investigators when it was used as a text in Utica College's Economic Crime Management Master of Science Degree program in the Advanced Economic Crime as well as the Legal Concepts of Criminal Fraud and Corporate Criminal Liability graduate courses. After quickly thumbing through it, I immediately recognized that it truly contains a bounty of useful, pertinent and relevant information.5-0 out of 5 stars A very good choice!

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid primer for the non-professional
The ulimate guide to forensic science is well written , easy to understand informative for both individuals with a general interest in the topic and also for young people wishing to understand a career in forensic science. It is strictly a primer, as are most books in the colorful DK line.As such, it is a book that anyone can pick up to learn a general outline on many topics without being weighed down with too much technical information. A good basic book for the non-professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crime Scene
This was a fantastic book. It had lots of case studies and heaps of glossy, colour diagrams, which made the text very easy to understand. It was technical yet very easy to understand and it was very detailed. A must read for all those interested in forensi science.

2-0 out of 5 stars The illustrated pamphlet on criminal investigations
This book's target audience is the Hardy Boys mystery crowd. While every page is filled with colorful photographs and great looking illustrations, the depth of information conveyed is extremely thin. While the scope of the material is broad, covering crimes from homicide to cybercrime, you won't learn much about any real criminal investigation beyond what you'd learn from your average dime store crime novel series. 4-0 out of 5 stars some useful advice
The book came out in 2002 and was certainly written before the events of September 2001. Certainly seems germane nowadays. It tries to systematically study terrorism. Its causes and its tactics. Needless to say, when I turn to the index and look up hijacking, none of the book's instances refer to the possibility of kamikazes. This is how we can tell that it waswritten before September 2001.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highlighting

5-0 out of 5 stars A book which should be read by all first responders...
This book gives you the vital information you need to perform your duties as a first responder as well asshowing security and safety managers what is expected of them also. The information is given in bite size chunks so as to aid in the retention of the material. The pictures and tables are very helpful in getting the key ideas across. The case studies of both the Oklahoma and first WTC attack are noteworthy for their detail. If you are responsible for the safety of persons or a first responder this is one book you should read and take to heart. ... Read more
