5-0 out of 5 stars a true eye opener for personal safety
I think what I took away from reading this book was really a lesson in personal safety. I found myself really paying attention to everything going on around me and walking a little bit taller. This isn't for everyone but I found it a critical read living and working in the city at night. I actually was able to identify a bad scene unfolding in front of me and got my feet moving to avoid it. John Douglas presents the facts in a non-alarmist way while still putting great emphasis on what bad dudes are all about. This is a must read for anyone in law enforcement and anyone who likes to gain power through knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good insights into human nature
This was a very interesting book describing the rise of criminal profiling in the F.B.I.John Douglas pioneered the combination of psychology and crimaal catching which has become so popular today, especially since Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs, which showed the public how this new science works (in an exaggerated form, of course). This book details how that science developed, what it's benefits are, and why it should be used, but unfortunately Mr. Douglas doesn't really tell us a whole lot about how exactly it works. He looks at case files, examines autopsy reports, then comes up with a profile of the killer. All of the cases he records in this book are cases he got right (one wonders how many he has gotten wrong, since he mentions having done hundreds and hundreds of cases, and he only mentions a few dozen), yet he never really bridges the gap between case file analysis and criminal profiling.Perhaps he doesn't want us to know, so that criminals cannot use that information to their advantage. If so, he should have explained himself, as the books cover and intro are rather misleading.
3-0 out of 5 stars I CONFESS! I READ THIS BOOK!
Hey, I am not looking for a plea bargain here. I plead guilty to reading Mindhunter by John Douglas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated information presented in friendly language.
Fantastic! On a personal note, this is the only book of its kind that I will ever need for my work as a novelist. I'm not qualified to pass judgment on Dr. Lee's abilities but it's clear that he is premier in his field and this work will stand the test of time and will surely be updated with new editions as necessary.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Doc spotlights the Ramseys...
Ditto to Dennis Littrell's eloquent and well-informed review, by the way. This is a solid and varied sequel indeed, and the Doc looks very cool on the cover, but I just want to focus on the Ramsey case above all.
1-0 out of 5 stars Same-old song and dance from Lee
A book that I couldn't finish--it was just as bad as his first book, and I just wonder when he will, if ever, let go of the O.J. Simpson case. I'm tired of reading about it, and the other cases are rehashes of previously known stories, with no new facts. Perhaps someone not familiar with these cases will like it, but to those of us who read true crime books all of the time (at least this reader!), it's the same-old, same-old... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Details That Developers and Security Experts Need
Phishing quickly exploded from a nuisance to a full-fledged threat in the middle of 2005. Weaknesses in email, combined with flaws in Web security and with a little social engineering mixed in make for an effective tool to get the attention of users and lure unsuspecting people into the trap.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a technical reference: A great read
If you're on your way to a security conference this summer, and you'd like to get up to speed on web site abuses and browser design vulnerabilities, this book makes for excellent airplane-reading fare. I say this because Phishing Exposed manages to succeed on two fronts: it is both an instructive technical reference, as well as a surprisingly compelling narrative.
5-0 out of 5 stars Expands the boundaries of client-side hacking
Phishing Exposed is a powerful analysis of the many severe problems present in Web-based activities.Phishing Exposed is another threat-centric title from Syngress. The book presents research conducted by Secure Science Corporation as a way to understand the adversary. The author demonstrates his own attacks against multiple popular e-commerce sites as a way to show how phishers accomplish their goals.I was surprised by the extent to which the author could repeatedly abuse high-profile financial sites, and for that reason I highly recommend reading Phishing Exposed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Advanced.....right....
As a graduate of the basic and advanced Reid interrogation seminars, and having conducted a few interrogations of my own, I picked this book up with the expectation of "advanced" techniques. Especially since the guy who wrote it was with the bureau. But instead the book has the standard techniques. Thier is absolutely NOTHING new or advanced about this book. This book provides training about as good as the basic patrolman gets at the academy. However, this is just my opinion, pick up the book and see what you think, but as for me I wish I had saved my money. Thanks for your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful information

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly exciting!!!!
Whether you are a mystery reader or a professional auditor or a CEO/CFO, you will gain from reading this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written new edition of fraud overview
Fraud is ever present, especially now. Authors Howard Silverstone and Howard R. Davia suggest that in recent years fraud has moved from the periphery of the corporate world to the center of it - from small, unprofitable, marginal companies to the biggest blue chips. The headlines about Enron, WorldCom and Global Crossing suggest that the authors are right. They do a commendable job of categorizing and explaining various kinds of fraud and the circumstances that make scams profitable. They offer enough anecdotes to fill a mystery novel writer's idea file for a year. Given that their book is also accessible, intelligible and, at times, even entertaining, we recommend protecting your company by reading it carefully. This may be your opportunity to avoid ever finding yourself at a board meeting trying to figure out "Who done it?" ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the inexperienced
As a person with no experience in fingerprinting, I found that I spent more time decoding what the book was saying than actually learning the information. You definitely don't want to learn how to classify or file prints with this as your main tool. The other sections are more helpful if you're looking for a basic understanding. There are a lot of typos and the wording is sometimes confusing. If you are experienced and need a quick reference, or a beginner that doesn't need details, then I think this book will suffice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
This book is in simple terms making a difficult material easy to understand.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Splendid Contribution
With all of the forests that have been destroyed in providing paper for the many studies of Sherlock Holmes, it would be easy to think that nothing new could be said about the Great Detective. In THE SCIENCE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, E.J. Wagner splendidly proves this is not the case. With the recent interest in forensics provided by programs like CSI, and the rising numbers of characters based on Sherlock Holmes (HOUSE, MONK, Robert Goren of LAW AND ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT, etc.), a book detailing the science behind Holmes' cases could easily have became a piece of exploitation. Instead, Wagner offers careful, intelligent, and well-written analysis. This is one of the best Sherlockian studies in several years--actually, one that should join the ranks of the best of all Sherlockian studies.
5-0 out of 5 stars For the Love of Science of Sherlock
This book is a shining example of excellence, an A. Author E.J. Wagner's absolute command of the facts, crisp summaries of the most famous cases, her irony and subtle sarcasm -- I am very, very impressed. And in this genre, I am a hanging judge.
5-0 out of 5 stars A unique hybrid of science and literature
This book was very informative, if you are a fan of detection literature or TV.The author uses the stories of Conan Doyle as a jumping off point to get into the history of the science of detection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A close-up look into just how medical examiners work
Postmortem: How Medical Examiners Explain Suspicious Deaths offers what few competitors can: a close-up look into just how medical examiners work. The author spent three years shadowing examiners to understand how they probe questionable deaths, and Postmortem covers not just the physical but the legal, social and moral issues faced by the industry. From issues of objectivity in the face of subjective evidence to influences in headline cases, Postmortem is a title not just for the general public, but especially for the college- level medical collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!
If you into photography, you must use Photoshop CS and consequently, you must have this book.No more, that's it.... just buy it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful
Just to start this, I'm one of the "near-expert" users that uses Photoshop all the time, and has been doing so for years, and no, it's not at all geared for beginners, but you should of figured that out by the part where it says "Professional Image Editor's Guide". That said, this book is incredible, there are many very interesting and solid techniques that you will have a hard time finding in any other source. Aside from that, not much more is to be said, but as the owner of at least 6 or 7 photoshop books, I would have to say this is by far the best! Highly recommended, as long as your not a beginner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs better editing
This is a wonderful book for the photographer who is delving into Photoshop CS for the first time. However, there are many editing errors. Some of the places where Mr. Evening refers to other sections in the book obviously refer to previous editions rather than to the current edition. There are quite a few typos which were not picked up by the editing process as well. The indexing is not up to par either. For instance when you search for "montage" in the index it doesn't exist, yet there is an entire chapter on the topic.Overall, I am very glad that I bought the book and find it extremely useful in getting up to speed in my digital darkroom use of PS CS. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great choice of book for general information
The book provides a good genralised outline of the processes that human remains go through. It is a wonderful starting point for the examination of death and burial. However if a more detailed account is required it willnot suffice. As such it is a stepping stone to a more in depthinvestigation of death and burial.
