3-0 out of 5 stars Not as Boring as the explanation from Finland
I bought one of the original issues in the early 90's. All I can say is there will always be controversy as to what caliber bullet is the most effective. A lot of it has to do with biased opinions of favorite handgun calibers, almost to the point of being childish and irresponsible (read: Most handgun publications). 1-0 out of 5 stars Pure baloney
Unscientific, uncorroborated, invalid and completely discredited by various forensic experts in various papers.Just do a quick Internet search for "bullet stopping power" and I'm sure you'll come across one of these articles.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unscientific study
The main purpose of this book is to determine which handgun calibers are the most effective, and which cartridges are the best in a given caliber, and to determine how this stopping power can be prediceted. There is also some related information, created as a by-product of the study. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source For Real, Practical, and Effective Info...
As a licensed private investigator and an avid reader of investigative texts, I can personally attest that this text successfully meets the true test of value for investigative texts - it imparts the reader with ability to effectively employ its teachings.Mr. Yeschke has done an excellent job of properly articulating the techniques/procedures necessary to perform effective interviews.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff !!
If you are interested in conducting serious and professional investigative interviews this is one of the first books you should pick up. It talks about numerous interviewing techniques on how to extract vital information from the person your interviewing without asking "leading questions". I got over 5 pages of notes out of the first few chapters alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch
I have been a police officer for 5 years, and have received alot of training in the police field. In 5 years I have found that there is very minimal training in obtaining confessions from suspects.Obtainingvoluntary confessions from suspects is a very important task in today'smodern world.I found this book to be very informative and it explains tothe reader the many parts to an interview before leading into aninterogation. This book also also explains that showing empathy worksbetter at obtaining confessions than the old methods of coersion.Ienjoyed the book and am excited to get to apply its teachings in myinterviews.I believe that the methods taught in this book are worth whileand will work if you are patient and use them properly ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Rather Disappointing!
Dr. Lee's book begins with the well-known Scott Peterson and Elizabeth Smart cases. He details all the evidence collected (and sometimes not collected), and takes readers from the crime to the trial.Unfortunately, forensic evidence did not play a role in either case.In Scott Peterson's case, Dr. Lee concluded that it wasn't the evidence that did Peterson in - rather his post-disappearance actions and court attitude. On the other hand, it was interesting to not that the original jury foreman was removed (reason unknown) - since he was both an attorney and an M.D. the jury might have been led to a greater focus on the inconclusive evidence and the verdict turned out differently.
5-0 out of 5 stars A long-overdue focus on his famous works and methods
Dr. Lee is one of the foremost forensic criminology researchers in the world, having worked on over 6,000 cases and participated in many high-level trails with his evidence, so DR. HENRY LEE'S FORENSIC FILES is a long-overdue focus on his famous works and methods. Beginning with the latest headliner Scott Peterson trial, Dr. Lee focuses on how he investigated the physical evidence in the case, then moves on to the Elizabeth Smart abduction and other notable cases. Chapters survey how physical evidence is reconstructed and applied to the case in this intriguing true crime survey.
2-0 out of 5 stars Book not consistent with evidence
I do not know about any of the other cases, but I know the Michael Peterson case well. The photographs in the book are not consistent with the photographs I have from the crime scene. The defense ridiculed the prosecution because they did not have photographs of the footprints in blood. So where did that photograph come from?Testimony in court indicated that the blood spatter was behind--not on--the chair lift as indicated in this book. The footprint in this book shows a foot clearly wearing socks. Those socks would be covered in blood. However, the socks in the crime scene photograph clearly indicate socks that are spattered with blood not socks that have walked in blood.Because of these inconsistencies in this one case, I view all the other material in this book with great skepticism. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
Mann is an interesting person, but he cracked no cases in this book.At best, he provided evidence that supported what police were just about 100% certain of already.I have no idea what he tried to accomplish by writing "Forensic Detective;" however, there is no doubt whatsoever that it is not worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well written, enthusiastic and humerous view of anthropology
This review is to reach those of you with a strong interest in the sciences.I found this book very hard to put down.Robert Mann has a way of writing that takes you through his eyes to live breath and yuck, smell the experiences that has lead him on his journey of becoming one of the world's best forensic detectives. It is easy to understand even if you don't have any clue into the world of anthropology. It has made me more curious of the field, and I will be looking forward to studying it further in school.I recommend this to anyone who can stomach it, and who loves to learn factual knowledge through others experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative--That's what I needed.
A different reviewer of this book said it was dull and boring.Personally, I find the book to be a great read.If you know nothing, or very little about the FBI and are interested in possibly becoming a SA then this book is the book for you. It's very informative. If however, you know a lot already about the FBI then I can see how the book would be boring.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but dull
Unlike other nonfiction FBI books like both Ronald Kessler exposs or Christopher Whitcomb's "Cold Zero", this book lays out bare facts about the FBI. It takes you through the process of applying to become an FBI agent, what you'll encounter as a trainee at the Quantico Academy and what areas of the FBI deal with what criminal challenges.

5-0 out of 5 stars COLD CASE HOMICIDES IS HOT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Practical
Dr. Walton has done an excellent job of presenting one of the few textbooks on this topic. This is a thoroughly researched and carefully documented book containing not only Dr. Walton's expertise on the subject matter but that of several other experts in the fields of behavioral profiling, geographic profiling, forensic document examination, and forensic dentistry. The illustrations are excellent and tell much of the story visually. The last chapter, which details how investigators solved one of the oldest cold cases to date had me reading late into the night, even though I knew how it ended from reading newspaper articles at the time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook for ALL homicide investigations !
I am a retired Chief Investigator for a DA's office in California with over 30 years of criminal investigation experience.I currently operate a private investigation business, also in California.I have specialized in the investigation of violent crime for decades and have taught related courses at the college level. This textbook is by far the best homicide investigation textbook that I have ever encountered. While the title might lead one to believe it is primarily a "Cold Case Homicide" textbook, it is actually the best text on ALL homicide investigations that I've found. It's a "must have" for anyone involved in such investigations or teaching a course on any kind of homicide or other violent crime. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A well written volume on a very broad subject
Coyle has put together a very concise and comprehensive introductory work to a timely subject. While some background in science or forensics is useful before diving into this book, being an expert is by no means necessary. While I won't go so far as to call this volume an "easy read", it is far more understandable to the layperson then some other materials I have read on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Relevant After 100 Years
Francis Wellman first published this book in 1903 and despite the passage of over 100 years, the book is nearly as relevant then as it is today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for lawyers
Putting aside the overt racism contained in this book first published in 1903, this book, which was reading material my wife picked up at the University of Virginal School of Law, gives us an entertaining and eye-opening vista into the Ciceronian art of winning trials at the courts of law.Written primarily by several prominent New York City attorneys, many of its sections, joyfully reveling in the destructive power of masterfully twisted perceptions fed to lay jurors, are egregious far beyond any dispassionate, plain-spoken Machiavellian ethics. In addition to its lessons on the value of perception, The Art of Cross-Examination serves up a menu of time-tested techniques for extracting truth from liars, ridiculing expert witnesses, the use of anger, sympathy, empathy, humor, taciturnity, loquaciousness, etcetera that trial attorneys steeped in Cicero should find quite useful for years yet to come.

Editorial Review

Two crusading journalists investigate the FBI's forensic crime lab and deliver a strong indictment against what goes on there. Federal agents regularly dupe the public into accepting "scientific" findings that aren't based upon science at all, they charge, and the lab is infected with a troubling culture where truth plays second fiddle to prosecutorial interests, with information potentially useful to defendants withheld. The book's hero is FBI-scientist-turned-whistle-blower Frederic Whitehurst, and most of the chapters focus on the crime lab's controversial role in high-profile cases involving O.J. Simpson, the World Trade Center bombing, the Unabomber, and others. The authors at times appear to have a pro-prosecution bias of their own, but their conclusions shouldn't be ignored. They probably won't be; as one attorney tells the authors, "No defense lawyer in the country is going to take what the FBI lab says at face value anymore."Read more

John contributed a chapter to "Into The Buzzsaw". Exposes serious malpractice within the forensic dept of the FBI, how it's been compromised in some of the biggest cases, requiring them to be reopened. From the Oklahoma City bombing to the OJ Simpson trial. Even the FBI explosive expert on the WTC. John's a brave guy, find out why.

How many people remember when this report hit the news? How many people have thought about it since? (show of hands) Since then, how many times have we continued to seek justice utilizing this overblown, corrupt, self-serving organ of the Federal Government? Would you want their evidence at *your* trial, should you for some inauspicious reason find yourself at the wrong end of the military-industrial-prison-pharmaceutical-industry? Read this book and I'm sure you will say, out loud, in unison, with me -- I think not! Nothing has changed since that report hit the airwaves, the FBI continues to fly by the seat of its pants, making things up as it goes along, following orders in order to make sure the prisons are full of the candidates properly chosen by those it *is* accountable to...and it hasn't been accountable to the American people for a very long time. And to think we are basing a *war* on their "evidence" -- and it's a wonder I don't believe a word of it. Frankly, this book is only the tip of the iceberg in FBI complicity and complacence in a world that has gone crazy -- but it's a very important tip. This book is very thorough, documented, professionally written and very readable. A must for the library of any professed patriot. Read more
