Valuable Resource
When I was in high school I got the first edition of the excellent book. Now as a college student I picked up the second edition and it is as good, if not better than, the first edition. Like the old edition it is still divided into two parts. The first part is a strategy guide with lots of useful tips for finding scholarships, writing your application, negotiating for financial aid, and even specific tips for specific scholarships. The rest of the book is a scholarship directory. It looks like it contains more than the first edition - although I didn't actually count. The presentation of the scholarships are better than before and I found it easier to find awards for my major and career goals. Overall, I am very happy with this book. Although there are sections for high school students I feel that I have benefited as a college student. This is a valuable resource that I highly recommend. ... Read more

Thought Provoking if one is willing to think.
This book reviews the evidence about so-called "choice" models of education or "free market" models and their impact on education. In the end the evidence shows nothing, but it doesn't refute anything either. What Gill shows us pretty convincingly is that, at the moment anyway, this is a debate driven by ideology rather than by evidence. No matter on which side one falls, one can interpret the evidence based upon their perspective, since the evidence is inconclusive. Like so many other debates in our society we have to move beyond the "classroom effects" and investigate what the proponents or opponents really have as their agenda. This is an excellent book simply because it is one of the first systemic reviews of the evidence as opposed to the ideological journalism with which we are most often confronted. No matter one's perspective, this book is worth reading, because it will alternately challenge and support one's views.

common sense
This book only has common sense ideas in it.I generally like the motley fools products.However, this book should be purchased only by those who do not have a basic understanding of how to save or prepare for college. We all know it is best to start saving early and talk to people at the schools about how to get a scholarship.

Who Knew School Could be So Affordable?
This book tackles a daunting financial topic and makes it easy to digest. Best of all, it's only 125 pages, so I didn't have to commit hours and hours of my time to learn what I needed to know. The book offered charts, tables and plain English, distilling topics such as the Education IRA (now called the Coverdell ESA), 529 Plans (there are two main kinds of these and you can sock away up to $100,000 or more in them -- who knew??) and even paying for elementary school and grad school. Clarifying mud
Providing financial assistance to students has always been a complicated matter for academic institutions, and the complications have grown increasingly impenetrable, partly because of the mixture of motives that lie behind the provision of such assistance.Rupert Wilkinson has carefully examined a wealth of historical information on this topic, and he has achieved an admirable understanding of what lies behind that information.Possessed of a graceful and lucid writing style, he has elucidated his subject splendidly.Oberlin College is one of the institutions that he has studied, and as a retired member of its faculty I can attest that his treatment has been thorough, fair, and illuminating.
