5-0 out of 5 stars How do I live without Anselmo? I want to know...
I don't know how much longer I can make it. The sand in my internship hourglass is quickly running out. I make my copies and open the mail now with an anxious eye on the clock, knowing that only a few precious days separate me from the comfortable world of the internship and the prospect of trying to geta real job. With that blasted internship interview, I had Anselmo. Without him, I don't know where this cruel process will take me.My days have lengthened into long, dark periods of listless wandering. I arrive home from my internship, and stare at the peach hued walls of my ugly eighties themed apartment, and wonder, "where in God's name is Anselmo when you needhim?". If it has been a good day, and I have been able to muster enough petty cash to buy a small bottle of Karkov Vodka, I am usually able to drive the terrible thought of facing life after internships without Anselmo in three or six quick, putrid shots. But on normal days, those very numerous, substance 5-0 out of 5 stars This blasted book....changed my life
Finding an internship can be strenuous, but not with John Anselmi's easy-to-use guide. Anselmi's style is efficient and beautiful. His insight, top-notch. If John Anselmi were here right now, I would like to play a little jazz trumpet for Anselmi. He is the best, the best, the best. In fact, his thoughts are so original, so intriguing, I would like to subscribe to his newsletter. Thank you, undefeated, undisputed, King of internships!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blagev is bad!
I thought the book was absolutely wonderful, but I must comment on the writing style of the previous review, Denitza Blagev.I think her writing is awful, but her terrible writing (especially the creative stuff), only serves as a contradistinction from the brilliant writing in the internship book.Read more

Editorial Review

Mention "college" to the parent of any teen, and stress lines deepen around the mouth while a panicked, wild look forms around the eyes. College tuitions get more and more expensive, and college savings, if such exist, rarely keep pace. But while the kid is busily applying him or herself to SAT preparations (in order to get into a more expensive university), the parent who is going to fork out the money would be well-advised to browse through Cassidy's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This scholarship guide did the trick for our family!
When our daughter began her quest for scholarship money, we looked at many scholarship search books. We were well pleased with this one because it listed available aide that would be available for any university she selected. So many scholarship guides are catagorized by school and seem pretty much useless. Our daughter followed the suggested letter in this book, sent for all appropriate applications and actually did quite well in the scholarships she received. She managed to keep her out of pocket expenses quite low for a 5 year degree. Do not be confused- this is a guide - you still have to do the legwork yourself but it is a great place to start if you are new to the scholarship search process - especially if you do not have access to the internet!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
If you're in need of a scholarship, this is a pretty good book to look at.It does have some scholarships, grants, internships, and loans that most likely wouldn't apply to almost anyone.Of course, there are some that apply to almost everyone of every color and faith.Definitely get this book if you're in need of a book filled with private-sector scholarships.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money, in my opinion
This book is awful.I found no scholarhips applicable to me in the entire book, and it is full of bizarre scholarships that almost no one could apply for.I thought this book was for college-bound high school students and college students. However, most of the scholarhips are for things like mothers over the age of 30, graduate students, playwrights, etc. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive guide to APA approved psych programs
Everything you'd want to know about grad school is all in this one source. This book includes everthing you'd want to know about applying to graduate schools (overall acceptance rates, whether an advanced degree helps, what graduate schools consider to be important). However, rather than presenting the author's advice and opinions, the information is compiled from empirical research studies which adds much credibility to the information provided. Very helpful, is also the comprehensive guide of all APA approved combined, clinical and counselling psych programs. Provided are such things as scales indicating how clinically or research oriented a program is, the theoretical orientations of the faculty, what percentage of students are accepted into APA internships, the GPA and GRE cutoffs, number of applications received and number admitted, percentage of students receiving financial aid, percentage who hold advanced degrees, percentage of women and minorities, average years to completion of the program as well as research and clinical oppurtunities available. This book is very helpful in providing you with a general idea of what programs you may want to look into further, however the information doesn't always seem to be 100% accurate, therefore you may want to investigate further rather than accept all the information as factual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This to Get In
For anyone interested in clincal or counseling graduate study, this book is essential. These areas are extremely competitive and one cannot go into the process "blind." The general APA guide can be useful, but it covers many areas and mainly gives the basic facts on all programs. On the other hand, this book is very specialized. It gives information on the programs, but also includes invaluable information relevant to clinical and counseling psychology training. It has information on the programs, but also tells you how to prepare yourself, so you get in to those programs.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book has been my savior I reccommend it to anyone even remotely interested in a PHd or a PsyD in clinical psychology you wont be dissapointed ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great analysis
This book helped to clarify what has been called the "corporatization of education" that is taking place not only in higher education but in education in general. With corporations looking to education as a potential profit mine, the mission of education as a tool for a democratic society is being eroded.Shumar takes the concept of commodification and analyzes this trend throughout U.S. history with great detail. Although this book is pretty academic, and the postmodern terminology can turn some people off, this is a valuable resource for everyone looking to combat the corporate takeover of education and work to make it for what it should be intended for, a key tool for democracy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book rooted in a sound rhetorical approach
I am using Grant Seeking in an Electronic Age in a graduate writing course for education leaders. I have reviewed a lot of proposal writing books for this class and chose this one because it takes a strategic approach and is based on sound rhetorical principles. The book is logically structured around the process of managing change, which proposal writing is largely about. Not only does it spell out how to identify needs, propose solutions, and find funding for those solutions, but the book also introduces the rhetorical principles that underlie the various communication tasks involved in proposal writing. Each step in the proposal writing process is illustrated with annotated examples that explain why certain rhetorical strategies were effective in a particular case and how they were used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should Be Required Reading For Every Board Of Education!
This is a rather unique book with many well expressed arguements as to why the current trend to commercialize our public schools is a really bad idea. Hello!! Calling all our elected and appointed Boards of Education. Before you decide to plug the boob tube into our schools' classrooms, or make it easier for students to guzzle liquid candy, also known as soda pop, READ this book! It might just help you to stiffen your collective spines in the face of corporate propaganda and other forms of pressure!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books about education
Molnar's Giving Kids the Business is one of the most important books written about the frightening influence of for-profit corporations on the American education system. The section "And Now a Word From Our Sponsors" is a sensational argument loaded with pithy insights andbiting sarcasm.A must read for all who are concerned about education.

3-0 out of 5 stars Provocative Work, Yet Ultimately Unsatisfying
Molnar does an excellent job cataloguing and dissecting corporate involvement in education, and for that reason alone, this is a book that should be read by all those concerned with the changing nature of NorthAmerican education.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money...
I bought this book about a year and a half ago when I first applied to go to graduate school.I was unsuccessful, and applied to several more schools this year.I pulled out the book again, because my first choice school is very expensive.Out of the six letters that I sent to organizations listed in the book for further information on whether I qualified for their awards, three have been returned marked "undeliverable as addressed."Where I went to school, fifty percent was definitely a flunking grade!5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutly loved it!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Perceptive insights into American research universities
This is an incisive, readable assessment of the present American research university. Gone (and probably for good) is the growth of federal funding to universities beginning shortly after WWII, spurred by Sputnik in 1957,and continuing almost unabated until the end of the cold war.Although thebenefits of this funding are undeniable, the inevitable shift of prioritieshas had an impact -- not entirely positive -- on almost every aspect ofAmerican universities. Those in academia will find this familiarterritory.Others, e.g., tuition-paying parents or aspiring academics, will find many aspects of university life described with clarity, wit, andcandor: faculty hiring and tenuring, the scramble for external funds, theinfluence of sports programs, research and graduate education, to name justa few.Chapters on grade inflation (no, the students aren't gettingsmarter) and on why women are underrepresented in faculty ranks (no, it'snot just a "pipeline" problem) are especially perceptive. 4-0 out of 5 stars well worth reading...
I'm just beginning my PhD in molecular biology, and a friend gave me this book for xmas, knowing my intent to eventually become a professor. It was an eye-opening, fresh perspective of life in academia. It isn't alwayspretty, but it is a frank and honest account. How do you balance yourpersonal expectations for college students' performance in class with thereality that many of them turn away from the more rigorous and demandingcourses? How do you survive college politics?By answering thesequestions, and others, the author provides helpful information for currentand prospective academicians.

4-0 out of 5 stars good "saturday afternoon read"

Editorial Review

In its current incarnation, academia faces both challenges from within and the indifference or antipathy of much of the general public. Indeed, the American university system often seems adrift, unsure whether its purpose is to teach or to sponsor research, to train the country's young minds or to promote cutting-edge scholarship. Addressing the myriad problems currently besieging higher education, former university president George Dennis O'Brien looks forward by looking back. In contrast to many critics of present-day higher education, O'Brien attacks the institution itself rather than its ideals, arguing for a return to a bygone era of small denominational colleges. Unlike today's faculty-led research universities, these colleges were dominated by a powerful leader with a consistent moral vision, O'Brien writes; in returning to this model, colleges would enter a new "century of management," better equipped to handle the financial, technological, and social changes of the coming millennium. O'Brien's argument includes such radical solutions as transforming the tenure system and rethinking financial aid. Whether you agree or disagree with this line of thinking, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
I highly recommend this book whether you are a student, parent of a soon-to-be college student, are considering a career in academia or are just plain curious. It is very well written, witty and highly informative. I always recommend it to my friends in academia, especially when the subject of tenure comes up, which he discusses at length. He also discusses the history of the university, which I find very fascinating. All in all, an excellent read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provocative, insightful and, yes, even funny
O'Brien's title references what he terms the "half-truth" that the faculty is the university. His answer is, "of course, but ..." Drawing on his presidency at Bucknell, and his Hegel scholarship,O'Brien argues that an institution represents something else more difficultto identify but just as important: an ethos, a culture, a set of bindingideals, all of which are continually (re)created by the interaction offaculty with institutional tradition. While others like Donald Kennedy havealso briefly noted the idea of a greater degree of centralized direction,if not control, O'Brien takes the idea much further both theoretically, andpractically, by proposing specific faculty positions intended to strengthenin the long-term an institution's intellectual culture. Finally, O'Brienargues, in an academic version of Michael Porter's doctrine of"competitive advantage," that institutions ought to capitalize ontheir differences rather than accentuate their sameness. All in all, aprovocative, insightful and, yes, even funny meditation on the relationshipbetween institutional structure and institutional character. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Many inaccuracies about eligibility for awards frustrating!
The Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship Awards are described as "fellowships for graduate study in any discipline."The Hertz Foundation awards are for students looking into the application of the physical and technical sciences only!2-0 out of 5 stars Mostly for PHD candidates
The biggest complaint with this book is its organization. The chapters are broken down with business, law and health all together. Which makes it really hard to find something specifically in business. Another problem is the fact that most of the grants are for PHD candidates and alot are school specific.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good for masters candidates
I am a woman pursuing a masters in architecture degree. While the book was well-organized, about 85-90% of the scholarships and grants were for doctoral candidates. Out of over 1000 grants, I only found 6 that I MIGHT qualify for, and three of them I had already heard about through my internet searches.
