This book stinks!
I bought this used (thankfully I did not spend a lot on it) thinking it would provide a decent overview of graduate and undergrad scholarships...not so!! The undergrad and grad sections where the scholarships are listed are just about identical!Nothing is listed easily - for instance English scholarships are under Literature/Communications, for which there are only 3 listings.Don't buy it!!

Why pay for info surfing the web brings free?
I bought this book to help me aid my entry back into school at the ripe old age of 30. I figured, "Great! Peterson's is know for good guides, and I can use all the help I need". Unfortunately, The information contained in the book is readily available on a wide variety of websites for free, and if you are reading this, you obviously have access to the web! I would save your money on this one. Instead, use the money you would have spent on application fees, and surf the web.

getting money

A satisfied customer...

A "Must Read" for Parents & Students!
This is the best financial aid book that I seen!It's written in a clear, consise manner.Thanks to "Conquer the Cost of College", I actually have a better understanding of the financial aid process!The sample letters, budgets and worksheets are an amazing resource.Parents would have to be crazy not to invest in this book.I highly recommend it to all families with high school students.

A desire to pay for college
Don Betterton does a very good job of trying to take each type of student and setting them up with as many financial aid avenues as possible. However, no two students have the same need and the same financialbackground. Therefore it is difficult in order to resolve so many problemsor opportunities for so many students. His many years at Princeton giveshim the authority of saying in no uncertain terms "I have heard it alland here are a few options for YOU to think about". I just saved you $ and time !
I just saved you the price of this book and the time it takes to read it...so please send me a scholarship! Seriously this book is not good for the average individual looking for a scholarship. I read the entire book, carefully taking notes on possiblities, checked them out online and did not find even one scholarship that was a good match for my high achieving, caucasion, college freshman daughter. Not one.
DON'T WASTE YOUR $
This book was simply a waste of money-awful.The requirements to qualify for the scholarships is too incredibly specific.It is also the worst organized book i have ever read.It took so long to comb through the whole book only to find nothing.Please, I beg of you to buy a diffrent book.Don't waste your money.

Too specific
I'm a junior and didn't really find this book of much use. There aren't a lot of general scholarships. There's a lot of scholarships relating to specific schools or organizations. There weren't a lot of scholarships for essays, for juniors, or just an average person. ... Read more

Tenure tracks derailed: the triumph of the "at will"
The other two reviews accurately reflect logical perspectives on the clash of the dwindling but nevertheless delighted adepts securely tenured in the guild, the restless hordes of journeymen "freeway flyers" doomed to adjunct/part-time work (or in my case, full-time, non-tenured at a corporate university [not U of Phoenix, thank heaven for small mercies] which grants nobody tenure but everybody must work on an "at will" agreement sans contracts), and the eager if exhausted grad students, the apprentices. Benjamin Johnson's edited this collection of accounts, which range from overviews of the situation to analyses of the corporatization effects on higher education, union efforts, and a critique by David Noble (see his "Digital Diploma Mills" for more of same). Ana Marie Cox, whose essay is not really about Phoenix per se as much as the profit-making universities--disdains the proprietary system and makes the negative observations that are largely accurate, and to be expected.
a reader too reactionary
a reader, you are clearly ignorant of the realities of adjuncting and grad school, and why it is not acceptable for universities to make hefty profits off of their students and then turn around and pay adjuncts and grad students sub-poverty wages.The class I'm teaching right now at a state college pays $2800.I'd have to teach ten classes a year to make $28k!Four and four is the 'normal' load...lets see *you* teach four classes and then come home and read a little critical theory so you can finish your Phd.What a reader sees as 'back to the sixties' and hostility is really a struggle by working people to make a living doing something they believe in, and what they believe in is being gutted of learning content and franchised and commercialized by corporations.Yes it's true, a reader, and you shouldn't make light of the struggle of working people and intellectuals to fight for the power of education.Pendejo.

Back to the Sixties
Steal this University is a collection of thirteen essays by various academics and activists, which broadly decries the "corporatization" of American universities and generally recommends the organization of academic labor unions to oppose this trend. The book's title, a riff on 1960s radical Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book!, gives a clue that the essayists wax nostalgic for the New Left but also, oddly enough, the Middle Ages. Many of the essayists assume the existence of a past where faculty, all tenured, governed themselves unencumbered by administrators or financial concerns. A number of the authors appear to equate the notion of faculty governance with "democracy". The faculty governance implied by many of the authors probably never existed, at least in the form of the curiously undefined democracy imagined by them.Read more

Informative, documented, and up-to-date

Great
Will Teach For Food began as Social Text 49's "Yale Strike Dossier," which in turn grew out of a conference held at Yale to discuss the ramifications of the '95-'96 grade strike and the role of tenured faculty in persecuting advisees for union activity. Despite the omission of several key essays about the grade strike (Cynthia Young's "On Strike at Yale" from Minnesota Review 45&46, Corey Robin's "Blacklisted and Blue," (which may have been written after WTFF was published) and similar work by Gordon Lafer which appeared in Dissent, this first half or so of the book is indispensable. John Wilhelm's "Short History Of Unionization at Yale" provides a good framework for looking at the history of workers' struggles against taylorization and union-busting since the organization of maintenance and grounds workers in the late 1930s. Corey Robin and Michelle Stephens provide a solid account of the difficulties of organizing contingent academic workers, while Michael Berube takes yale's elite faculty to task for sabotaging students' academic careers and threatening them with deportation of union activity. Kathy M. Newman provides an insightful and funny analysis of the cultural meanings of and anxieties embodied in representations of graduate students in popular culture, also looking at the ways in which GESO negotiated these images and tropes in the early days of its organizing and at the tropes and images employed and mobilized by anti-union undergraduates to express their own particular anxieties regarding the prospect of TA unionization. The seconf half of the book takes a more structural look at graduate student unionization as a national movement and is a worthwhile companion piece to both the first half of the book, as well as to other volumes following a similar route.

PhD= Poor, Hungry, and Desperate

A certain elite university boasts (literally) an endowment of $5.7 billion (yes, billion with a B)--or did as of Tuesday, 16 September; you should add a million or two per day to get the approximate sum on the day you read this. On that same date the university announced that it will embark on a $1 billion (with a B) program to renovate the buildings on its campus. Yet just eighteen months ago, this same anonymous university--by far the biggest employer in one of the most economically depressed cities in the nation--engaged in a no-holds-barred campaign to break the two unions that represent its nonacademic labor force. And just before that, the university crushed the latest effort by the graduate students' union, which was seeking, before anything else, simply to get the university to admit the self-evident truth that teaching assistants are employees and that, as such, they have the right to bargain collectively.Read more

Editorial Review

At a time when government funds for bettering society are becoming more and more scarce, the role of philanthropic foundations becomes more and more crucial. Gerald Freund, an administrator and academic with four decades of experience with foundations and universities, has written a forceful indictment of many charitable institutions: they are insular, immune to outside criticism, unwilling to consult with outside experts, and devoted only to "pushing grant money out the door" and enhancing the stature of their directors. In particular, they are staffed with mediocre bureaucrats. Freund's solution: concentrate on locating and nurturing exceptionally talented individuals whose work will make a difference, instead of on large new social programs. Focusing on brilliant and dedicated people and becoming answerable to a wider constituency are the only ways Freund sees for large foundations to improve the world of the 21st century. ... Read more
