3-0 out of 5 stars I did want to enjoy this book
...however, it actually made me quite pissed after the first two chapters.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chilling
This is the best and most complete book on street gangs I have read. Much of it is in the voices of gang members, police officers and others who work with gangbangers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must read
Dr. Shen is a teacher at the college in MN I attended. It was amazing to read about the life of one of the smartest, kindest people you will ever meet.He isn't an easy teacher, but when you finish your master's degree in a year and a half and your PHD in five years what else would you expect. If you want to read a true story that will leave you in amazed this is book that you will want to pick up. But don't just take my word for it, read it for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading
After reading this remarkable memoir, I had the great opportunity to hear the author speak, and meet him afterwards. The story is well-told, and I especially enjoyed his technique of substituting nicknames for most characters, as it made the tale far easier to follow, from this Westerner's perspective. All in all, a finely written, dramatic, and at times horrific account of the Cultural Revolution. It deserves to be widely read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Cultural Revolution memoir I've read
I've read quite a lot of memoirs about life during the Cultural Revolution in China, but this one was definately the best! The author is a wonderful writer. His perspective of the time is so interesting, as he was brought up as a loyal revolutionary, but quickly realized that much was wrong about what was going on.Especially interesting to me are the glimpses of his parents, who are so quick always to "draw a line" when he runs into any kind of trouble.I also loved reading about his friend who was sent to the countryside with him, and who is one of those characters who always manage to land on their feet---he marries happily and does well with his career, and has 6 daughters while always hoping for a son---all through being good-naturedly lazy!I also found fascinating the places in China the author lived that were so horribly affected by environmental pollution.I hope the author someday writes another book, or several---I'd love to hear about his life in the US and also about his earlier childhood, before the Cultural Revolution.A wonderful book! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars In way over his head
Varon has a valuable mission in attempting to draw lessons from the activities, beliefs, and commentaries generated by the Weather Underground and the RAF. It's unfortunate, then, that he settles into the very "pathology" of resistance that he criticizes at the opening of his book. By focusing tightly on individual reflections of these groups' former members, he centers his discussion on emotion, theory, and abstraction. His decision to provide little context for their actions leaves us with the same problems as Aust's study of the RAF: the sense that these people were crazy and disconnected from reality. That might have been the case, but without making some attempt to at least depict that reality, Varon ensures that we can't "read" the Weather Underground or the RAF as anything other than irrational abberations. A more detailed history of the period might provide a better view - it would at the least allow for the possibility that these extremists' actions had concrete roots.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing The War Home ~ An Eclectic Balance
Jeremy Varon's "Bringing The War Home" is simply a "must read" for anyone who wishes to "understand" the '60's and '70's--the very concept of "revolution"--from the perspectives of the Weatherman/Weather Underground, the Red Army Fraction, AND the very governments and societies these groups sought to radically change. Both probing and honest, Varon's narrative and analysis is an important and eclectic cotribution to this critical and defining era. The relevance of this work to contemporary "war on terror" response is impossible to overstate. While a bit "pedantic" in parts--Varon's work is a long overdue illumination of that which defined not only a generation but an entire world. A real "keeper".

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written history
Jeremy Varon's "Bringing the War Home" is a well-written and engaging account of the radical student movement in the United States and Germany during the 1960s.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I didn't know anything about the game of Magic, but basically read this book for the Blackjack card counting story and the poker story.Very easy to read and interesting.I read it in 2 sittings and wanted to read more.Interesting to find out about other poker players that were into the game magic, thunder keller and david williams.Great book, highly recommended by this card shark...

4-0 out of 5 stars Brains, games, making money and overcoming the odds.
Jon Finkel was an overweight, middle school nerd who was bullied, laughed at, and ostracized until he found his calling in a fantasy game called Magic. Magic combines the otherworldliness of Dungeons and Dragons with complex elements of card play and has become a cult game with tournaments of its own. In Jonny Magic and the Card Shark Kids, David Kushner follows the transformation of Finkel from teenage geek in the throes of Magic mania into a thin, sophisticated and extremely wealthy professional gambler who joins the highly successful blackjack counting team known as The Lawyers. The true-life story traces Finkel's evolution from bully magnet to World Champion Magic master, to card counter and shuffle tracker, to sports bettor, and onto the World Series of Poker. Throughout his adventures, Finkel is accompanied by the so-called "Card Shark Kids," a strange mix of misfits and brainiacs who find a sense of belonging through the addictive escape of Magic and carry that into the gambling world.
5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this freaks and geeks story!
I'm not really one for books about Poker and games, but i read the last book by this author, Masters of Doom, and I saw a review of Jonny Magic in the New York Times book review that seemed interesting so I picked it up. I really loved it! Great characters--Finkel is a classic, and the storyreads like the most gripping fiction. David Kushner's writing style is humorous and riveting.I think this should be a movie or television show. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is a no nonsense book of some very devious people who were outlaws in morotcycle gangs serving self and their evil ways selling drugs, getting high, beating up people and just being real bad keeping up with the outlaw biker image. You'll learn of the gang initiations and the brutal nature of the biker gang if you upset them. Most were filled with an angry rage ready to unleash at any moment of provocation, which they did so frequently.Jail, prison, theft, hatred is just some of the personal anguish they experienced.Suddenly, these hard-core bikers come to an end point of total frustration and failure, even sickness and are saved by God, Jesus Christ, and tell about their rotten lives without God and how wonderful life is with the Lord. These men and women (and the girls were tough bikers, too) tell it all in a personal interview format. This is no small book and the cover and paper is of high gloss quality. If you want to know about bad people living in a bad life then this book can bring you face to face with these outlaw bikers who are now living for the Lord and are happy tell you their story! There are dozens of motorcycle pictures in this book with photos of the gang members and 263 pages of very interesting true crime reading. There are pages that reveal cruel tortures, so it's not a book for children. These are true stories by those who have commited crimes while operating inside the dark world of the outlaw biker lifestyle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb and Powerful
Remsberg's powerful and intimate photographs imbue his subjects with a dignity too often missing from studies of people living at the margins of society.Though Riders for God is worth the price for the photos alone (the Blessing of the Bikes is brilliant), it is much more than an art book.Remsberg elicits from his subjects the startling truths that belie the easy stereotypes conjured by the notion of Christian bikers. I found the powerful stories of redemption gripping and utterly unexpected.Rather than masking or exploiting their interior lives, Remsberg's photographs reveal.Remsberg's patience and gently prodding curiosity make him a wonderful guide connecting the reader with people generally regarded as marginal or simple. While he remains an outsider to the gang, he clearly gains their respect along with their candor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absorbing read!
This finely crafted book offers a fascinating look at a world that is doubly obscure: the mind-set and lifestyle of outlaw bikers and the world of religious extremists. Remsberg's photos are mesmerizing. And his text, which reveals these unique bikers in their own words, is equally compelling. Anyone with curiosity about human nature will be engrossed from the first page on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Youth Gangs
This book is by far one of the most innovative and insightful books that I have read in some time. They also challenge the more common images that gangs represent as well. I found myself questioning the basic reasons for there are gangs in America, and found myself finding a whole new perspectie as these people view their dscieion to be in a gang as an economic choice of survival, not that of one they get into because they have a choice.5-0 out of 5 stars Youth Gangs
I found this to be one of the most informative books about understanding the gang concept in America. Howerver, it also helpedme to debunk the same myths about gang and agang structure as well. This book made me look at gangs as an alternative economic choice for those involved in the gangs and the difficult choices that many of them face that those on the outside of the gang life will never have to make.5-0 out of 5 stars Good articulation of gang research into a well-written text.
Shelden and colleagues do an excellent job in analyzing the literature, from Thrasher to present, on gangs and the culture surrounding them.Theycritically examine statistical data and use several sociological theoriesin an attempt to better understand this growing societal phenomena.Theoriginal research from the Detroit area interviews is compelling.Certainly a book that would aid anyone's understanding of gangs, gangculture, or even graffiti (they use photographs to help explain this). Scholars looking for a book as a supplemental text in Delinquency or likecourses would find this book a great asset! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars An Insurrection?!?
The author calls the conservative movement an "insurrection", as if conservative ideas are revolutionary and something that needs to be put down. This book does not demand a serious discussion, just a straightforward dismissal. Liberal claptrap at its worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for aspiring activists and revolutionaries!
I could not put this book down! This book was very thoughtful, extremely well written, and told a very interesting story. The book details the lives of five conservative activists (Bill Kristol, Ralph Reed, Clint Bolick, Grover Norquist, and David McIntosh) who shaped conservative thought and activism in the 1980s and 1990s.Though I disagree with the positions of many of these conservative activists, their lives are fascinating. Some are true romantics and others are completely Machiavellian. All in all -- a great book for anyone who considers themselves (or aspires to be) an activist, a revolutionary, or someone that has a fire to make change.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased, trivial and revolting
The author utterly fails to come anywhere close to writing a serious, thoughtful book on the five men chosen as its subjects or their ideas and impact on American society and politics. This is a shame because the subject is interesting and vital. She absolutely refuses to take the ideas of the five men whose biographies she writes seriously -- I don't mean that she has to agree with their ideas to write a good book, but an author covering this subject at the very least owes it to her readers (and herself) to become familiar with the ideas and guiding principles of men like this. After all, they are serious well-educated thinkers. She absolutely refuses to do so.Instead, this book is an Oprah-ized People magazine level snide personal attack. The author dwells obsessively on the high school and college years (and mistakes and flaws) of her five subjects and attempts cheap dime-store psychoanalysis. She seems to be of the opinion that holding right wing views is pathological and her approach is to try to explain the causes of this pathology -- preaching to the choir at its worst. And that is the central flaw of this book, which skirts the edge of some vitally important topics and political ideas. Her treatment of affirmative action is particularly illustrative and shabby. Is it a good remedy for America's current racial problems?Or does it foster divisiveness between races, violate the Constitution and do more harm than good to its intended beneficiaries? There are serious arguments on both sides of this issue and it is a subject on which reasonable and thoughtful people can sincerely differ. The author describes and attempts to deal with exactly none of theses matters, but just blithely assumes and states that anyone opposed to affirmative action is a racist. From such starting assumptions and biases the book degenerates into a who-called-whom description of political tactics (never a pretty activity on the left or on the right) and personal smears of its subjects. It is tedious and uninformative in the extreme. It is generally a mistake to write a book about people you dislike and cannot begin to understand; this book shows why. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT READ FOR ALL FOOTBALL FANS
THIS IS THE STORY OF THE NEW YORK JETS, HOW FAILURE AFTER FAILURE HAS FILLED THEIR HISTORY. THIS STORY DESCRIBES IN GREAT DETAIL THE FEW SUCESSFUL SEASONS AND THE MANY DISAPPOINTING AND TOTALLY PAIN FILLED ONES. THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING AND INTERVIEWING THE PEOPLE WHO WERE DURING THESE DISASTEROUS TIMES. FROM WEEB AND JOE TO THE COMING OF THE TUNA, THIS BOOK HELD MY INTEREST AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL FOOTBALL FANS, I FEEL THE JETS PAIN.

This is a well-written history of the New York Jets. It covers the one great accomplishment (Super Bowl III) and the many failures and disappointments. As a fan you love the team and always get your hopes even though you know they will dash them in the end. This book covers those emotions well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A harsh reality
This book displayed a harsh reality of what life was like for many Jamaicans during this period. It clearly showed why so many Jamaicans migrated to get away from the somewhat savage-like environment that the politicians created for the less-educated lower income Kingston residents.I enjoyed reading a book full of harsh realities. This should show people, either PNP or JLP that the goverment is to blame for the condition of this beautiful country now and then.

4-0 out of 5 stars Biased but realistic
I read this book and it opened my eyes to the root of the Jamaican situation. Born in the UK but living in Barbados it was most interesting reading of a political situation that a Bajan would never dream of experiencing...but yet we are all West Indians. 3-0 out of 5 stars the naked truth
Miss gunst is to be commended. This is a book that no Jamaican had the gutz to write. Mr. Seaga is indeed one of (by no means the only) the worst tragedies in Jamaica's history. He is evidence that mental slavery, of which Marcus Garvey speaks, is still rampant among negroes in this country. Apart from bulldozing squatters and replacing them with his serfs, arming them with the help of the CIA, creating the Shower Posse the most notorious drug gang, and selling out Jamaica to white capitalists by trying to turn it into an offshore sweatshop factory, what has this Lebanese done for black people in this country? Burning Spear was right, Marcus Garvey words really come to pass. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A top-notch true crime thriller
This is a great true crime book, written in an unusual style, packed with incredible detail. It reads almost like a fiction thriller. The part that takes the reader thru the night of the murder, moment by moment, is absolutely riveting, edge-of-your-seat suspense. The portrait of alienated youth that it presents is quite disturbing and frightening. There is so much detail, it puts the reader right there in southern Florida with the "gang" called the Lords Of Chaos as they vandalize and rob for kicks, escalating rapidly into homicide. as the story unfolds. The author uses a style of writing that is fragmented, choppy and more prevelant in fiction. I've read 100's of true crime books, but never one written in this way. His sentence fragments may put you off at first, but its a good technique for moving the story along very fast. This is one of those books that is very difficult to put down until you are finished, a real page-turner. I look forward to more books from this writer---he seems to be a major new talent on the true-crime scene.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some Has to Die Tonight
Jim Greenhill's topnotch investigative writing is clearly visible in his true crime Someone Has to Die Tonight. While the story will chill the reader to the core, Greenhill's crisp writing and detailed characterization of each member of The Lords of Chaos will hold everyone's interest until the last page. The story chronicles how one teenage boy is able to control other seemingly normal boys to the point of committing crimes that escalate from pranks to murder. It is a wake up call for all of us who naively believe such things can't happen in our community. For those interested in true crime and psychological thrillers, Greenhill's book can't be beat.
5-0 out of 5 stars A triumph of research and deft storytelling
The story is enough to invoke chills, but combine that with Greenhill's masterful storytelling and I wanted to leave the light on before hitting the pillow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost
On the back cover, Chuck Klosterman writes that "if this book doesn't make you want to be a journalist, nothing will." While I absolutely agree with Klosterman's high praise for this excellent book, truth is, Weingarten has written an elegy for something that's been lost in today's journalism. Reading The Gang that Wouldn't Write Straight brought home to me just how far we've gotten from the spirit, the energy, the chutzpah, the adventurousness of the years Weingarten describes. And that's not to suggest any criticism of the author -- just the opposite, in fact. Weingarten is a true historian of era, and he has beautifully captured not only its hopes and promises, but also its disappointments and betrayals.Maybe Klosterman's point is that Weingarten has given us as a timely, needed, reminder of what journalists should aspire to. Not everything the so-called New Journalist wrote is first rate. Always, though, they had the right spirit of adventure about theiw work. Journalism was alive for them in a way that it's not now. Weingarten inspires journalists today to breathe new life into the profession. And his own effortless prose is a reminder of what good writing is all about in any era. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Published Too Soon
In GOOMBATA, authors John Cummings and Ernest Volkman mention Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano on exactly three pages.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Dying Breed in More Ways than One
This book was originally published in 1990, and therefore, as other reviewers have pointed out, the ending just drops off the edge of the cliff, leaving the "hero" in jail awaiting trial.
1-0 out of 5 stars Crap
This is awful stuff - it goes way too fast, and the amount of facts that are wrong is unbelievable from two so-called mob experts.Among the wrong facts - the circumstances surrounding the Frank Costello shooting, the McBratney murder, the Westies alliance, and much much more. For the real Gotti story, try Gotti: The rise and fall. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Buy Spirit of 69 instead
Besides the very few pictures in this book, some depicting the racist stereotype, this book was a waste of money. If you are really interested in learning about skinhead 'culture', you should buy Spirit of '69.

3-0 out of 5 stars art and a tiny lesson in a misunderstood youth subculture
First of all this book is not written as some far in depth account of skinheads, it is a photo journal. Knight is a talented photograher and this book should be put into spectrum as an art book, who's subject is an almost lost subculture.Do not buy this book if you want a grand tale of the non-racist skinhead movement and evolution. Also when looking at the photos be prepared to keep an open mind, past preconceieved notions. If you like the book check out Gavin Watsons Skins, a very similiar book, less writting but more photographic talent. Also if you want more knowledge on the truth behind skinheads, try reading Spirit of 69, a Skinhead bible. 4-0 out of 5 stars decent...nothing earth-shattering
This book is fairly well written, including not only the traditional aspect of the culture, but also touching on the more well-known white power branch. However, all in all, it's mostly stories from skinheads in"their day" and a fashion guide. Although for someone who knewnothing of the skinhead culture (or for those who thought it only aneo-Nazi based culture), this is exceptional. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pestilential swamp
In his compelling expose', the author reveals the incompetence and the criminal activities of this accursed organization as he experienced it for more than a decade from 1984. In an acerbic and humorous style, he lifts the lid on the massive waste perpetrated by the useless and often devious parasites that infest Turtle Bay and other UN offices worldwide. As such, Sanjuan provides us with a lively portrait of the nature and habits of the denizens of this reeking swamp.
5-0 out of 5 stars Confirms what any observer of the U.N. knows true
One does not have to read this book to understand that the U.N. is a corrupt, anti- American, anti- Semitic , racist organization. One only has to have followed the U.N. in its long history of hysterical anti- Israel resolutions, its obsessive focusing on one area of the world while ignoring totalitarian crimes in most of its member states to understand the moral bankruptcy of the organization.
4-0 out of 5 stars Core Competencies blah, blah ..
Pretty accurate and entertaining.Especially amusing if you happen to work there and read about what you already knew happens at the UN. ... Read more
