3-0 out of 5 stars not so great
Too many typos - I've never seen so many typos in one book!!!The story was the same throughout - gang fight - gang fight - they didn't really go into the mindset or anything else aside from a chronology of fight after fight. The book just kind of fell flat.Once a King Always a King was extremely well written, but Lords of Lawndale was really lacking. It had the potential to be a really good book if modified.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Modern Day Studs Lonigan
I grew up not far from where Scott and the Gaylords hung out and he nails the mood and the times perfectly. The changes taking place in Chicago and the sense of neighborhood compare well with what Farrell describes in Studs Lonigan.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK guide, but could have been much better
On the positive side, this small booklet gives a decent overview of gangs and the symbols they use; clothing, graffiti, tattoos and terminology.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gangs across America and Their Symbols, get it!
As a guy who has been working in the law enforcement field for over 25 years I have to say this book has been valuable to me in providing a quick and easy resource in my dealing with gangs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nifty Little Book
I dont care what others say, this book is great. Although the sayings are not from I Love Lucy, the sayings are put next to pictures from I Love Lucy and the result is something someone could have easily stated in I Love Lucy when one of these moments occured. Another great thing is the books size, it would easily fit into a pocket or purse and can be taken anywhere. Other Lucy books are bulky, and are sometimes hard to travel with(depends where you are). The only downside is that some people may have trouble reading this, but I have never had the problem myself. So overall buy the book if you want some tips along with Lucy and the gang. Dont buy this if you want only stuff from the show. But trust me, you wont be dissapointed if you do buy this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just a waste of money
First of all you need a Magnifieglass just to read the book because its so darn small! The "words of wisdom" are corny.2-0 out of 5 stars Before you Buy...
Please make sure you know what you are buying. I was highly disappointed in this tiny book. All it is is sayings (not from the show) accompanied by pictures from I love Lucy. Not worth it, if you want great pictures from the greatest television show buy: "I Love Lucy : The Complete Picture History of the Most Popular TV Show Ever" In my opinion the most complete book about I Love Lucy, but if pictures are all you want buy a Lucy calendar at your local book store. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping and disturbing - I couldn't put it down
You don't have to be in the newspaper business to find this book interesting. Even if all you do is read newspapers, or use them to line the rabbit cage, you will be astonished. This exhaustively researched, extremely well-written account demonstrates in graphic detail the lengths to which a desperate monopolist will go to achieve and preserve its monopoly profits. This is a really important book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Let the truth be told
For one who was currently employed by Gannett and had never heard of its ways, this book could be a kick in the face.4-0 out of 5 stars My review
The Chain Gang, written by Richard McCord, was an interesting synopsis featuring the undermining practices of the Gannett Empire. He tells his own story of his dealings with this masterful mega-chain and also his personal crusade against it. Overall the book was an excellent read and a necessary referance for any community journalist.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A master piece!
This book was excellent! I read it in just a couple of days. Since I first started I couldn't take my eyes of what I was reading. The story is shocking and rude, yet interesting and mind-opening. It explicitly tells the struggles of growing up in a foreign country with everything against you and yet find the way to a new world full of possibilities. Excellent for tenagers, parents, and students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Informative
The penitentiary, reformatory and chain gang were all developed during the 19th century, which belies the importance of that century to American history and the history of punishment in particular as it forms the bridge between earlier forms of punishment in Colonial America and the development of the modern penal system.

5-0 out of 5 stars The original 50's Humor in a Jugular Vein of "Mad" magazine
I have the complete "Mad" from the E.C. Collection, which is limited to just the original comic book from the Fifties, not to be confused with the black & white magazine that has been a rite of passage for adolescents for the past half century."Mad" was the only title to survive the purge at E.C. in the wake of the adoption of the comics book code, which put an end to "Tales from the Crypt" and its cousins. To get something of a hint about what this was about, check out the article "Baseball is Ruining Our Children" by "Frederick Werthless, M.D."Obviously, this is as thinly veiled as you can get in going after Fredric Wertham, the infamous author of "Seduction of the Innocent."4-0 out of 5 stars Historic Humor
I would urge anyone interested in contemporary US history to buy this book or any other of the "MAD About The...." titles.MAD defined, reflected and revolted an era. There is so much more here than meets theF.B.I.It's fun, moves at a pretty good pace, aids digestion, calmsjittery nerves and will shrink hemmorhoids without surgery!

5-0 out of 5 stars Peace and love, baby, Alfred's back!
This book is a shagadelic romp through the pages of MAD magazine with reproductions of the most hilarious spoofs and parodies of the 60's. Movie takeoffs include "201 Minutes of a Space Idiocy", "East SideStory" and "Flawrence of Arabia". TV satires include"Star Blecch", "Bananaz", "The Man FromA.U.N.T.I.E.", "The Pwgitive", "Lizzie", and"Hokum's Heroes". Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars compassionate and astute insights into "la vida loca"
Barrio Gangs is an excellent exploration of the reasons young people gravitate toward street gangs, as well as an accurate, empathic view of the day-to-day reality these young people face. It has enhanced myunderstanding of the "at risk" children with whom I work, and Irecommend it frequentlyto others in the field of counseling. It isscholarly, yet reflects the author's clear committment to the need tounderstand these youngsters. A fine source for all those interested in theculture of streetgangs. (I believe that many of theinsights the authorshares with regard to Latino streetgangs are also applicable to streetgangsof different ethnicities.) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An Overview of Gangs
This book adds missing data for those who are interested inthe study of gangs. While a few books have discussed gangs in Europe, this book also looks at the existing literature on gangs in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It uses Malcolm Klein's definition of gangs to decide which are "true" street gangs and which are organized crime or other illicit groups. This method is both the book's strength and its weakness. The line between what the author calls a "true street gang" and other illicit groups is not very clear and we are left without crucial context to understand the proliferation of armed groups outside the control of the state, particularly in Latin America and Africa. ...
