5-0 out of 5 stars Foundational Work in Gender History
Joan Scott's "Gender and the Politics of History" is one of the landmark books in the field of gender history. What is gender history, you ask?To a large degree, that's a question this book is trying to answer. This book can be regarded as an explanation of *what* gender history is (as Scott defines it, at any rate), why it's important, and how it can be done.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Also see the DVD with Jean Kilbourne
This book's ideas need to reach more people. It seems we're inundated with stories of child molesters, drug pushers, and other threats to us and our children; but the 200 billion dollars spent by the junk food makers, pharmaceutical pushers, military recruiters and others to colonize the hearts and minds of our kids is often overlooked.Sadly, many of those who are learning to look critically at the commercial media are often more privileged economically.Maybe we can find ways to reach out to other sectors of our society through letters to editors, calls to talk radio, writing on message boards and so forth. Also, there are additional resources that we can use to share perspectives to help protect people (kids and adults) from the psychological warfare of Big Business.I'd recommend DVDs like "Deadly Persuasion" from the Media Education Foundation, which is an expose of tobacco and alcohol advertising presented by Jean Kilbourne. There is also the award-winning film called "The Corporation" available from Amazon.Subscriptions to "Adbusters" and "New Moon" are also very helpful outreach tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must Read!!
Can't Buy My Love is an extraordinary book, insightful, critical, and without a doubt, an eye-opener.This book should be required reading by all Americans!Personally, it has played a pivotal role in my life.I would say I'm your average American citizen.I grew up in New York, immersed in the typical American culture.I watched plenty of television and movies and thus was exposed to an endless array of advertisements. As most people, I didn't think that my thoughts and actions were influenced by these advertisements. But after reading this book, I clearly saw how the messages and images of the media had a huge impact in my life.Until I read this book, I was sort of unconscious of this influence.I just went shopping as though it was a ritual and followed the mainstream culture.I went out drinking and pretended to have a good time while engaged in superficial conversations in loud smoky bars.Essentially, this book brought me to many realizations and my mentality started to shift for the better.I started to see things for what they are.Jean Kilbourne does an excellent job of analyzing numerous ads and clearly demonstrates the manipulation and false promises imbedded within these cleverly designed ads.Corporations spend millions of dollars on advertising and psychological research. As the targets of these ads, we as citizens need to be critical thinkers and media literate. In this day and age, we need to have an understanding of how the media industry works and in particular, the advertising industry, which constantly bombards us with messages on how we should live our lives and what is considered "normal."I highly, highly recommend this book. It's clear, concise, understandable, and will definitely have a positive impact in your life.I especially recommend this book to teenagers, who unfortunately have become the victims of massive amounts of advertisements.Profit-driven corporations have taken advantage of young impressionable minds and for that reason, I urge you to pick up a copy of this book for yourself and someone you care about! This one book was able to jump start a transformation in my life.I promise you won't regret reading it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review
I am enjoying this book, although I am reading it at a slow pace. The chapters are divided by sections of the poems and there are meditations in each chapter-which I find helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful, Just Awful
I really wanted to like this book. I have been schooled in the wisdom of "original blessing" as a corrective for the concept of original sin, and well, I'm a woman. So I thought this book would be right up my alley. Reilly goes overboard, however, in rejecting _any_ attempts at self-discernment as negative. There is such a thing as self-assessment that is accepting, positive, and life-affirming, without necessarily approving of everything that we accept about ourselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Feminist War on Women.
One of the major reasons why radical feminism remains such a destructive influence on the lives of Americans is that it claims to speak for women when it really only represents a minute percentage of them. The feminista activist has proved quite adept at obscuring this fact by labeling their critics as "patriarchal, anti-woman" and "sexist." The irony lost on many is that no social movement in history has so thoroughly undermined the constituency they pretended to represent.
5-0 out of 5 stars An enlightening read
I really enjoyed reading this book "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Women, Sex, and Feminism" by Carrie L. Lukas. This book taught me plenty of information. I was surprised to learn that cohabiting couples are more likely to divorce than remain happily married and that women who divorce typically regret it afterwards and often end up unhappier than when they were married. One would think that because of things like alimony checks and child custody that the opposite would be valid. I was also surprised to learn that it was a myth that one out of four women has either rape victims or victims of an attempted rape. There is also a great deal of information on domestic violence, fertility, liberation, abortion, daycare, and statistics that address health care issues. In short, I would say get this book (despite its low average customer review rating) if you are hoping to gain some enlightenment and learn about feminism from a point of view that is not based on PC myths.

1-0 out of 5 stars Her eduation was a waste
Look, the fact is feminism is about CHOICE no more, no less. I have the highest respect for stay at home moms--it is the hardest darn job on Earth. But this woman is WAY off base to say that feminism sold us a lie. Feminism GAVE us a choice. It told us we did not HAVE to pretend to believe we were June Cleaver if that was not what was in our hearts and souls.

5-0 out of 5 stars "REAL WOMAN" Defined

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Feminist Manifesto
Alice von Hildebrand gives us authentic feminism in this explosive little book. Just as Marx's manifesto set Europe on edge, so this little book should set on edge those who have tied themselves to the false feminism of the sexual revolution. Von Hildebrand sees in the female body, with its hidden sexual organs, a sacredness and a mystery that make women the guardians of purity. This special mission to guard purity is the mission of women. And so von Hildebrand points out that for women to fail in that mission is a grievous self-injury, both physicial and spiritual. Her manifesto strikes at the heart of the false feminism that has wounded, and even destroyed, so many women in the West.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
If you are frustrated with modern feminism's hatred of women, and looking for validation in the context of Christianity, then you need to read this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book was not better then the first book in the series but definately beter then the 2nd one. I found the story boring at time as some issues that were already discussed in the fist book where discussed again in the 3rd book. Other then that it was a good continuation.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Goodpasture
Goodpasture, I simply had to share with you that I happen to know that the princess supports over 700 needy families, from feeding them to educating their children to tending to their health care.In fact, in the book, if you finished reading it, tells how her son bought a business in Pakistan and set the young woman up as the owner, where she is prospering.Although she did stay in the princess' sister's home for a while, it was explained in the book that they were afraid to send her home, that her parents might resell her.Everything takes time.I know two princesses extremely well, one from Saudi Arabia and one from Kuwait, and both are extremely generous and help people all over the world.I'm sorry you had such a negative opinion of the princess, but like I said, I'm confused that you didn't read on to see that indeed she did change the young woman's life in a very wonderful manner.Just because the princess is extremely wealthy and does enjoy her personal wealth, she gives away a mind-boggling amount of money, and for good causes.I just thought you would like to know, as well as others, so you would not feel so disappointed and angry at the princess over an impression that is not reality. Also, many things are not told in the books as some things would give her identity away on the spot.

1-0 out of 5 stars Circle needs to extend radius beyond Princess's delusional microcosm

5-0 out of 5 stars The Second Sex Transcends Time
Simone's treatise is the most brave and brilliant piece of literature ever written about gender and its effects on the lives of everyone we know. She continues to speak the truths about men, women and privilege in society and the corrosive effects of the constructed and artificial roles that we still struggle with. The Second Sex is as essential and appropriate reading today as it was 40 years ago. To anyone interested in the roots of gender oppression, definition and equal access to opportunity, this is the go to reference book. Simone de Beauvoir has found another generation of readers who understand its appeal to rationality, historical accuracy and truth.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT GOOD
after seeing The Guru on TV i got into the whole sex book thing i read all the best sellers from Mars and Venus in The Bedroom by John Gray to How To Get Any Girl Any Time by The Guru
5-0 out of 5 stars exceptional achievement
Simone de Beauvoir basically explains the sexual initiation of the female, her relations with the opposite gender, and her place in society, in the style of her classic manifesto of the liberated woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, some good news!
We've been told since we were young that men marry "down" and that no woman with a career or significant education should expect to attract many men.But Whelan's book, citing U.S. census data and her own study commissioned for the book, reveals that this is false!High-achieving women marry at the same rates as, and in some cases higher rates than, the average woman. She goes on to explain that the persistence of this myth might be explained by the fact that high-achieving women marry a little later than the average woman. In other words, we might see that many high-achieving women in their late twenties are unmarried, but things start to even out as these women get married in their thirties.
5-0 out of 5 stars WhySmartWomenNeed to Read this Book
Remember that line about a woman over 30 having a better chance of being hit by lightning than getting married?Well I just picked up a copy of this book, and not only is it entertaining and compelling, but it also addresses all of the horrible, outdated myths about single women with careers, men and marriage -- it is possible (probable) to get married after your 30th birthday after all!I highly recommend this book and I'm buying this for all of my single friends. ... I admire this author's willingness to explore the taboo subject of dirty talk, no matter how embarrassing and finicky it may seem to some people. I found myself nodding in agreement at society's timid approach to verbal stimulation during intimacy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Goddess wisdomfor everyone
This book is an excellent read for any woman (or the men in her life) that wants to understand herself better. I had several "light bulb" moments of insight as I was reading,as I saw parts of myself in the goddesses Artemis, Athena and Aphrodite. It was very educational as to what makes women tick and then what we as women can do to be more well rounded pyschologically. The blend of Jung analysis and ancient greek myth makes for an easy to understand why we women act the ways we do. I recommend it for any women seeking to know her inner goddess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding My Own Myth
This book was extrememly useful to me.I have had to overcome many myths my family has projected onto me, about myself. Dr. Bolen's book helped me to pinpoint my underlying picture.I was able to do this because of the information about the other goddess archetyes.I think if you are a woman, and you are beginning a path of healing and recovery of your true self, this book will help you find the goddess who holds you captive(so to speak).I could then search for a way out of my captivity and access the strength available to me through the archetype I identified with. There are strengths and weaknesses to all the goddesses butI saw a common thread that ran through all of my life.I now had a starting point,I could then walk forward.

5-0 out of 5 stars The originator of all Goddess Power books
Now that the Goddess power has gotten mainstream ... it's time to honor the first writer to use it as a psychological archetype for all people. Dr. Bolen presents a brilliant piece of work. Find your inner Athena today!

3-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Opinion
Men are notoriously insensitive and frequently behave in ways demeaning to women.I know this to be true because I'm describing myself. This is why a femanist will never be convicted with such a book.By means of argument, reason, and so-called "legalism", you can't drive a woman to believe in God-endorsed gender roles when excluding love.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed by the decision to reissue without rewriting
This CBMW book advocates a He Leads/She Submits model of Christian marriage.I am disappointed by the decision to reissue the book without responding to Dr. Sarah Sumner's 2003 critique of this model in her book, Men, Women and the Church.Sumner points out that a wife's submission should be understood in the context of her husband's sacrifice, not his leadership.Additionally, it is not correct to define headship as leadership.Headship is a metaphor. While leadership may well be an important aspect of headship, leadership does not capture other facets of the metaphor and misses the organic unity implied by the head/body pairing. He leads/She submits alters the Bible's head/body and sacrifice/submit pairings and is a distortion of the Biblical marriage model.Sumner's arguments ring true to me, based both on my reading of the Biblical texts and my childhood experiences in a fundamentalist Baptist church.I am disappointed that CBMW has chosen to ignore Sumner's work, as opposed to either refuting her critique or acknowledging the error in their model.

The authors claim this book is a response to the movement of feminism, but I think it's a response to any woman who dares seek equality with a man or a place of leadership. This is the second time I've seen a male writer try to place women beneath men while at the same time claiming to believe in equality. Honestly, who do they think they're fooling? The statement that "men and women are created equally, but God made man the head and woman the helper" is one of the most self-contradicting statements I've ever seen. If Eve was made to be a helper, she had a very small role in life indeed. In fact, she would be a Stepford Wife more than anything else. I'm not being sarcastic here; for those of you who don't know, a Stepford Wife is a robot made by a husband who isn't satisfied with a regular woman with a strong mind and opinions; her sole purpose is to serve, and that very strongly resembles what this book describes as a woman's role. As I read their words, I could not believe the arrogant pride of these authors, believing themselves to be holy men and preaching to women from their self-appointed thrones that we can never and should never be on the same level as they are. Christ is higher than all of us, but He pulled people up beside Him instead of shoving them down. He also elevated women as well as men, and yet these authors are trying to say that women were created merely to serve just because we have wombs? How does that make us inferior leaders to men? This is not Christianity, folks, or even logical thinking. If you want proof to overthrow these authors' claims, simply read the Bible! In the Bible, it was women who Christ first revealed Himself to after His resurrection and women who He entrusted with the news of His resurrection. The Apostle Paul even asked women to pray and prophesy in his church. Did I mention Deborah, who taught many men? The Bible hardly has silent women, does it? With this knowledge, no one can accurately claim that God meant for men to be teachers and women to be silent; that idea is simply, blatantly untrue. You can NOT tell a woman she was made to serve and can never lead just because she's a woman and then attempt to label yourself a Christian. We are all servants to Christ; this is not a matter of sex. God designed men and women to co-exist and rule Eden in equality; it was not until after the Fall that man, not God, designed a flawed heirarchy of men over women. Please don't be mislead by this book; it attempts to do something much more than provide relief from the Feminist movement. Imbalance of power in either sex is bad; radical feminism is one end of the spectrum and books like this are the other. Either way, equality and harmony are lost. The only way this book could possibly be useful in a healthy way to any person would be if it were used as either a reference to old-fashioned thinking or a guide on how NOT to treat and regard women. As a Godly woman, I have every intention of being a servant to Christ and no intention of doing so beneath men. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Work
If you like Satrapi's other works, you will like this. Pithier, more serious than prior work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tiny but intimate glimpse into the lives of Iranian women....
Marjane Satrapi has a gift of bringing images of Iran to life with minimal words and simple but elegant drawings.EMBROIDERIES details much about Iranian women through a discussion between women of various generations at a tea time.Satrapi was in charge of the samovar and stated that the tea at noon and night functioned as a gathering time for women to discuss men, love, sex and even plastic surgery.Prior to reading this book the first time, I was unaware of how independent-thinking Iranian women are.I also was unaware of the numerous tactics used to maintain this freedom in what is a very male-dominated society (and when you learn what embroidery means....).I think the funniest moment was the woman who tried to cut herself with a razor on her wedding night so her husband would think she was a virgin but instead the woman cut her husband! However, the naivete was also very apparent as one woman married a man, received many jewels as wedding gifts, and then allowed her husband to leave for Switzerland 10 days or so after their wedding with all of her jewels- and of course he asked for a divorce after he had taken all of her jewels and safely left the country.Reading this book was like getting a tiny but intimate glimpse into the lives of Iranian women and realizing that they are just like American women in many ways.I highly recommend this book but will state I enjoyed it better the second time than the first.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read, but way too short.
I have read all of Satrapi's entertaining, educational and revealing books. Embroideries is all those things as well -- the only shortcoming is the length of the book -- the ending is very abrupt and you feel that there is much more to be said about the subject. Nonetheless would I recommend this book to anyone who liked Persepolis 1 & 2 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, practical, inspring advice!
What a wondeful book! I have 3 sons (aged 15, 11 and 4 years) and so many of the questions and answers here were relevant to things they are doing or have done and how I have felt about things. I found the advice very sensible and up to date and reassuring. ... Read more

I loved this book!As baby boomers approach midlife we have many choices in how to live "our second adulthood stage".After reading this book I am excited about this stage and the possibilities that lie ahead.Don't read it if you are not open to such ideas and would rather live this stage of your life in a more matronly fashion. But for those of us who want more....read it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Passion hype
According to the author, women below middle age either were or are repressed and suppressed, trying to please others and probably stuck in unhappy, unfulfilling, and sexless marriages. However, once past that indeterminate age, women have or will achieve mastery over their lives, kicking out deadbeat husbands or demanding wholesale changes, with lots of personal fulfillment, especially in the sexual realm.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
It takes a gut to write such a hot book. Yes, "hot" because as Sheehy proves with numerous interviews, surveys and personal stories, women's sexual lives don't stop after becoming moms or turning 40+ years. Surely this book will jump-start your faith that it's not over until it's over and even then there are still things (doctors included) that can help.

The book was right on, regarding the school systems and the teachers that work in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerfully Enlightning!
Where do I begin......this book has been extremely informative. Specifically in regards to the "public" school system.I am a 31 year old single parent of an 11 year old boy.Recently I have been dealing with various issues within the public school system. It alarms me to know that the experiments to "distruction" of our black children still goes on.Moreso, how we continue to allow are children to be "test cases".We can no longer turn a "blinds eye" to our African American children (specifically boys) any
